Sorry, but as much as I love a good ghost story, in my 61 years on this earth, I’ve not seen nor heard anything that even remotely counts as a ghost or spirit. I’m open to the concept, but given the fact that I haven’t seen one, I’m skeptical at best, as much as I’d love to see my late parents again.
I have had many paranormal experiences and in my (fairly worthless) opinion, if there wasn't anything strange going on before there could be now. It's the same concept as "misery loves company" or manifesting good things into your life. People tend to attract the energy they want and in this case people want the gallery to be haunted. So if enough people visit who want to experience something supernatural, eventually the (energy, ghosts, spirits, take your pick) will show up. The electro magnetic field only makes matters worse because it definitely can give some people that creeped out feeling. It's probably how the whole thing got started and then somebody came up with a great story about it being Queen Katherine's ghost. Awesome for a preteen sleepover but zero basis in reality.
There just has to be some kind of Paranormal happenings there in my humbled opinion!!! With all of the history that transpired there, I can't see how there could not be some type of residual hauntings
@garycurry4600 oh I have. I've experienced something Paranormal twice in my lifetime. I think it's something that has to happen to you personally before you can become a full believer.
Something weird could be going on at Hampton Court for all I know, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any ghosts. Isn't a screaming lady wearing white one of the most famous ghost stories of all time, and she's all over the place.
You may not believe this, your choice , but it’s what happened to us. In 2003 my late hubby and I visited Hampton Court Palace. My hubby was on a walker and we had marvellous assistance wherever we went. A guide saw us coming in and said to hubby “ don’t you climb those stairs sir, come with me”. He took us up to the floor and along a back way ( oh how I loved all these ‘treats’. I even got to hold an original key!: . We were going down a corridor/hallway ( nothing like the gallery shown. No portraits etc) and I kept lagging behind. When asked I said “ I don’t like it here, it’s awful. Perhaps I said creepy). He smiled and said “ this is the way they took Catherine Howard out of the palace” “ it’s not the haunted gallery”. Believe it if you like but it’s what happened to us. No running down the corridor, no,screaming etc but I sure as heck did not like that passageway. Wonderful place by the way even though it was bucketing down with rain. 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Ok, first of all, I'm so jealous that you got to see 'behind the scenes' as it were. I'd love that. Second, I don't doubt for a second that back corridors in those old palaces/buildings can be quite creepy. I had the same eerie sensation in the back corridors of Chatsworth when I was doing research there. There were portraits leaning up against the walls with sheet plastic over them that rustled slightly as the air moved when I walked by and it was so darn creepy! :-)
If there is such a thing as an afterlife, I hope poor Katherine Howard’s ghost is somewhere else and having a much nicer time than she did during her final days here 😢💔
Honestly speaking Hampton Court is haunted. Many of the spirits visit the location and have passed over to the other side but not everyone will see something or have an experience. Catherine Howard visits Hampton Court and isn't grounded there but the screams isn't actually from her when she visits not merely a replay of past events of what happened which keeps repeating itself. Spirits rarely show themselves and it takes a lot of energy for them to do so and have freewill. @@HistoryCalling
oh damn i just clicked on your video on anne of cleves' dying wishes for a rewatch, having just finished a rewatch of your "was anne boleyn pregnant when she died"-video, when this popped up at the top of my suggested-list as having been posted only one minute ago🌿what a fun monday treat! excited to watch/listen
I've been waiting for ghosts to appear on this channel! I have to admit, this is where I become a bad historian; it's so much more fun to believe, I just don't question it too closely. And poor Katherine Howard certainly does haunt those of us who have learned her story here. As for screaming foxes in the night, I was treated to that sound for years when I used to feed them in the back yard every night; I had groups of three or four at a time that I knew by name (Zorro, Curveball, Boo Radley, Hilda, Andy, Waldo, and others, as well as many raccoon friends). They'd sometimes come in the daytime too when I called them, but they serenaded me at night for years. Low barks, howls, yips, shrieks, and other vocalizations. Ghostly, for sure!
Haha, I know what you mean. It is fun to just go along with such stories sometimes. I don't think I would have liked the foxes I'm afraid, so rather you than me :-)
@@Skirt553 She got that name by hiding behind a tree and shyly peeking out at me every night before coming into the open. I usually just called her 'Boo"...she was a sweety.
Thank you. It's not that I want to insult anyone who believes in ghosts of course, or poo poo their personal experiences, but this particular story is, in my opinion, a Victorian fabrication.
Most if not all historical tourist attractions need a good ghost sighting to drum up more visitors, Tower of London and quite a few more, in this instance it a load of tosh, thank you HC. 👍😊
Yes, I agree. It's a very popular thing to claim to have to bolster tourist numbers. I was in Malahide Castle in Ireland recently and they claim a ghostly lady on a staircase as well. 👻
Another brilliant and comprehensive analysis. Do I believe KH runs shrieking down the gallery? No. However could I be persuaded that the kind of heightened despair somehow be imprinted on the fabric of the surroundings? It's no more of a leap than putting sound onto a small shiny disc and playing that back. Long live the traditional British ghost story!
haven’t even watched this video yet but i already know it’s gonna be amazing! Kathrine’s story is absolutely heartbreaking to hear about and i think that’s Hampton Court is one of the most beautiful palaces of this era. thank you for another great video ❤️
@@HistoryCalling just finished it and LOVED it, i would love to visit over there one day. thank you once again for the amazing content you never disappoint:)
My mother once told me about a haunted house a few towns over, where she and her sisters grew up and had friends who saw apparitions of the former owners in the house. I asked my aunt about it once, and she instantly turned pale, and refused to talk about it at all. Years later, I told the story to a friend of mine, and he didn't believe me, so I suggested we just drive over to the house and knock on the door. So we did, and a teenager about our age answered, "This might seem weird, but my grandparents used to own the house two doors over, and my mom told me stories about this place." "Yeah?" "Yeah. So, um, does weird stuff happen here sometimes?" "...yeah, it does." "Well, if it's any consolation, they were good people, passed away of natural causes. Just don't be rude or disrespectful to your parents. I've heard they don't like that kinda stuff."
@@HistoryCalling thanks, but I didn't go inside, just a chat on the front step, where I learned they had recently discovered part of the underground railroad lead out from under their garage. My Mom's story ends with me playing with another boy my age ( three or four) in the house, and when we left, she said I asked her who the old man was in the window, and of course, she turned and didn't see anyone.
I have a soft spot for ghosts and they've always haunted a shelf or two in my library. When I was younger I shared a condo in Burbank, California with a fellow animator (and art school buddy) who was also a skilled amateur magician and a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood. So I read about a famous spiritualist in the thirties (I think) who had produced amazing physical evidence of a ghostly manifestation at a seance; the author claimed it was the only such event he couldn't debunk. The ghost had materialized its hand in soft, melted wax, and withdrawn the hand without disturbing the impression. A perfect casting was taken; no one could explain it. So I took the book downstairs and read it to Mike, who was fascinated. "Wow, I'm gonna have to think about that..." A bit later he walked into my room and said "Here's how I think you could do it..." Years later it came up again on a documentary, and Mike's explanation was exactly right. I have a high tolerance for psychics, mentalists, spiritualists, and other illusionists as long as they're having fun and being great at what they do and not conning anyone.
Ghost stories were, and remain, very popular, no castle, great house, or palace is worth its salt unless it possesses a headless figure or a white lady. It is gift shop tosh, but less fattening than fudge or shortbread.
Dear HC, this was another great video. Everything about Tudors is highly appreciated. I too, doubt that she had a chance to escape and run towards Henry begging for mercy. It's a story that makes her fate even more dramatic and I find her story heartbreaking enough. The palace though is lovely, been there 3 times. Neither did I feel anything in the Haunted Gallery. Thank you very much 😊
I expected this to be a very short episode; "Does Katherine Howard's ghost haun-No, ghosts aren't real." 😂 I like how you treated the question like any other historic claim though! Great content for the spooky season, thanks HC!
You're welcome. Yes, I was really interested in where the story came from, but a bit disappointed that there wasn't more to it actually and that it only dates to the Victorian era.
That was excellent. I had always believed the story of Katherine running screaming down the gallery to get to Henry until I visited Hampton Court in 1989. Then I learned that it likely it didn’t happen, and I was disappointed. Now I am always pleased when videos such as yours debunk the story. The points you make are excellent, not just about the story of Katherine but hauntings at the palace
Oh WELL DONE! I've been waiting for this debunking for quite some time, and your scholarly approach is just what is needed! I'm not particularly interested in ghosts, but I've always wondered at the strangely specific nature of this haunting. Presumably a ghost may haunt any place they care to, and one has to wonder why Catherine would choose a hallway, instead of all the other places in the palace? Why not the place where she first heard that Henry was putting her under arrest? Where she spent all those sad hours awaiting his decision on her future? Or perhaps in the Tower where she spent hours practicing with the block? Or the place(s) where she met with Culpepper? To me, it always seemed an invention of an overactive imagination in response to hearing the sad tale of Catherine's fall. It puts the listener in Catherine's mind - what would you do? Rush the guards and get to the KING!!! Of course! But that assumes that her one chance was foiled in that moment, and her fate sealed afterwards. I just don't buy it. She spent weeks under arrest in the palace. Weeks in which she might have tried any number of means of escape (I'm think of Matilda's escape centuries before). Or not. But to me, it's obvious that the "ghost" is the invention of the sympathetic Victorian sensibility and it's fascination with death and mourning. Not to mention the good marketing to the palace visitors.
You're welcome. Glad you liked it. I must say though, I was a bit disappointed at just how flimsy this story turned out to be. I was hoping it would date back further and there would be a bit more evidence. Once you really look at it, it falls apart so easily it's rather embarrassing.
@@maryloumawson6006 there’s a theory that some ghosts are like recordings - it’s not an actual spirit, just some energy left over after something bad happened there. So in this case it might be a recording of her running down the hallway. But as stated in this video there’s no evidence she did that anyway!
Great video. I read about this story, and my first thought was exactly as yours. There were not pictures of her, so it was impossible to identify the ghost to be her. Thank you for debunking the story so intelligently.
Thank you for doing this. I help with paranormal investigations, research myths & legends. There are lots of people who get upset with me when I give them information about their hauntings, myths & legends. You are so right there is a lot of Tosh! :)
@ It’s a great story. I have heard about the haunted gallery. It never made sense to me. I am pretty sure Katherine was freaking out. If anything, she would be haunting her rooms or the grounds. If she haunts anything. My job is to disprove hauntings through research. The research is fun.
Another well thought out and organized video that proves beyond a reasonable doubt this story is (to borrow your phrase) a bunch of ‘tosh’. Thank you!!
You're welcome. Yes, I'm afraid it is. Even I was a bit disappointed at how flimsy it all was. I was hoping I could give you all a slightly better ghost story that that, but there you go. Those pesky Victorians have been trying to trick us all!
Hampton Court Palace is one of my favourite places to visit, and as such, I've been a few times.. knowing about the so-called haunted gallery, I saw and felt nothing but admiration for the paintings! (And I'm a real wuss) Great story though, thank you for a spooky episode, HC! I would love to be proved wrong. Happy Halloween, everyone! 🎃👻🧟♀️
Yes, it's beautiful. I've only been twice and as the first time was a very long time ago, I didn't remember very much of it. It was a real treat to get to go back last year. Happy Halloween to you too 🎃
I've seen some things as a janitor. The last school I worked in was Haunted. We called him Bill. Mostly typical stuff, lights, strange sounds, and one appearance. But, I'm more in favor of.... Old building, faulty plumbing and wiring, and I worked there late at night.
8:00 A family of red foxes lives in the woods near my house. They occasionally go through my back yard. Calling to each other sounds like a woman being throttled.
I am Australian and we don't have many foxes here in our cities. I recall watching some BBC series when I was younger, there were night scenes out in the countryside with what sounds like a woman shrieking in the background and wondered why no one acknowledged it. Years later I learned that's actually what a fox says 😆
It’s interesting that few people in the Tudor era did NOT believe in the existence of ghosts. So I’m really surprised that this story is from the Victorians. But they seemed to be REALLY interested in spirituality then people of other times though ancient peoples all over the world 🌎 believed in ghosts
Thank you for this video. I think ghost stories and legends can really give you a flavour of the place, its history and culture. Particularly if you like the darker bits of history
I take it we are going down the spooky route for Halloween? Perhaps next year we could go for very haunted historic properties or perhaps some mythological creatures and the folklore stories they feature in? I can only imagine your approach to looking at the myth and legend that is the Blood Countess Erzebet Bathori, if could you overcome the language barrier, given that family legend on my mother's side swears blind that we are descendants of her through an illegitimate line from a grandson, but how accurate it is, I could not say. Nevertheless, it gives me mega Brownie points with Goths and such as you can imagine. Her input to popular culture is almost incalculable.
Oh yeah, this is the Halloween video, although honestly I don't know why I bother. For some reason my Halloween videos (bar one) never do very well. I bet if I looked at Countess Bathory, the video would flop :-( What an exciting potential family tree you have though. You should definitely try to research that story if you can.
❤ Thanks for another lovely video! No surprises, pretty much: ummmmm, no... unable to confirm reliable documentation..."flimsy as a house of cards" (imo worse, that would at least have real cards)... here's some lovely footage of portraits in the beautiful empty corridor 😂
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say: I have visited many times and always feel uneasy in the Tudor part. It may just be the lack of natural light as you’ve said, but I’ve visited the parts that are also Tudor and newly opened this year and don’t feel anything. Maybe that’s just me, doesn’t prove it’s Katherine Howard, but to me it’ll always feel haunted.
It's certainly a big, dark, draughty building with a very famous and often very sad history and I'm not surprised at all that it can make people feel uneasy. I'm also not saying that people who believe in ghosts are crazy or stupid, or trying to discount anyone's personal experiences. I just don't think this specific story is real for all the reasons listed in the video. It seems clear that this tale is a Victorian invention.
@@HistoryCallingAnd although none are truly confirmed to be Catherine, they all have a similarity so one has to bear some resemblance. The third or fourth portraits from the right side are what I imagine Catherine to have looked like 😊
@@HistoryCallingSeeing all those Catherines reminds me of an Art project for a course I did a few years ago. We had to choose a painter pre 20th century, do some research on them and their work and try and replicate one of their paintings. Of course I chose Holbein, no question. Trying to replicate the Anne of Cleves portrait would've been cool but it is well beyond my talents 😂 Instead I chose the purported Catherine Howard miniature, the third portrait from the right side of the thumbnail. I've always had a soft spot for dear Catherine so it was like my little tribute to her. The result of my drawing and painting looked nothing like the Holbein miniature lol but I was proud of it nonetheless. Facially, my Catherine looked more like the second Catherine on the left side of the thumbnail, looking more middle aged rather than a teen 😅
I agree it's nonsense, if memory serves, in the tudors television show , they used part of it , katerine attempting to see the king , but being restrained , Imy parents took me to visit Hampton court Palace , when I was very young, I was around 4 or 5 , but I remember the gardens, ( nothing more ) but it's a very beautiful place , Palace * Many people must have died there , why her ? 9nthe dancing plague, I remember something similar from America during the depression, dancing to death, I believe thier is a. Movie about it , jane fonda , ( they shot horses don't they ? ) some sort of competition, with a cash prize, last couple to stop dancing wins , all are desperate for money, several die , ( 1930 ish )
Exactly, why her and not Jane Seymour, who is one of those who died in the Palace? Yes, I think the Tudors show did use that scene, even though it likely never happened (at least not in the Gallery). Yeah, those dancing plagues were bizarre. I hadn't heard about the depression-era one though.
👏👏❤ Okay, I'm officially in Halloween mode now, HC. Great job as always. I actually first read of Katherine's ghost in a book I've had for years, "Haunted Britain and Ireland". Lots of fun stuff, including a mention of "Maud", a ghostly lady who supposedly wanders around the Dobbins Inn Hotel in Carrickfergus. Of course Ireland can claim banshees and pookas as well. Love it! And no, I don't believe in ghosts other than for entertainment and tourism. Be well, HC. 🙏🏼
Yeah, those banshees can be a real pain. Always screaming in the middle of the night. If only they were as well behaved as the leprechauns :-) I don't think anyone would want to haunt Carrickfergus! ;-)
@@HistoryCalling 😆🤣She's said to be searching for her lover; hopefully he was worth it, as she was murdered by her husband. Played by the heart. It's an old story.
Yeah, it seems that they're always the victims of horrible deaths, or looking for lost lovers. There are never any ghosts who are just hanging out, being happy!
Hello love your video's I must say I love Tudor history and would love to believe Katherine Howard is haunting Hampton court as it's the most beautiful palace I have been
It is stunning indeed and I love that one side of it is gothic and from the Tudor era and the other is much more classical and from the Stuarts/Hanoverians.
@@HistoryCalling it really is a wonderful place it cost me a fortune as I live in Leicester and had to get train I loved it that much I went there 4 times in 1 year but unfortunately due to fibamyalga I can't travel long distance so I rely on you to show me the beauty
Yes, on a total side-note here, the trains in England are so expensive much of the time (and in the rest of the UK too). I'm sorry to hear about your fibromyalgia. I've heard that that can be really excruciating and debilitating.
Having visited the gallery, we certainly didn't feel any strange vibes. It is a good way though to attract more tourists to Hampton Court. On another topic, I have just read that a writer by the name of Vasoli has found documentary evidence that Henry VIII on his death bed regretted his treatment of Anne Boleyn. It doesn't seem credible given the animosity he felt for her and the awful charges he allowed to go forward and her subsequent beheading, but I would be curious what you thought of this.
Oh, I haven't come across that so I'd need to look into it. I will say though that I disagreed with Ms Vasoil's assessment of a document she claimed was Anne Boleyn's last letter and created a video all about it.
Some activities are a replay which has embedded itself into the atmosphere and building. Some of the actual ghosts can't communicate with us as some are residual energies which reinact past events which is stuck in a loop but others are spirits who are able to communicate with us if they want and are aware of us. It's very real and I've been with two mediums and they picked up on many spirits from different centuries. King Henry VIII is a visitor as well.
@@HistoryCalling some stories need to be debunked. Only in a weakend state of mind or if the mind is weak already can such tosh be taken at face value. And I'm a sworn enemy of all things taken as such.
I’ve been to Hampton twice and had the luck to walk the hall alone as I went during off times and not a lot of tourists. Having heard this ghost story, I searched in earnest for a sight or feeling and found none. Beautiful palace and worth visiting! Couldn’t help but imagine all that happened there.
Flip, I wish I could have walked it alone. As you can see in my footage though, no such luck. It was bunged that day (no doubt partly because it was such lovely weather and the middle of the school holidays).
I’ve been a huge fan of your videos for long time now! Being 🇨🇦 and all of my family coming from the UK, I’ve always been fascinated by its history! I’ve been to Hampton Court and as much as I loved it, I didn’t experience any otherworldly presences there! 😂 Do I believe Catherine’s spirit is out there? Sure. But I’d be more inclined to say she would haunt the Tower, where she actually died!
I love Hampton Court Palace! I actually had a paranormal experience there about 12 years ago! I have never felt anything in the "Haunted Gallery" and I agree with you that it's more of a myth, than a truth...
You know the staff did say that there are other places in the Palace where people have reported odd things. People just get distracted by the fame of the Haunted Gallery.
The ghosts I wouldn't want to meet would be at the site of the German Killer Toilet, the terrifying epic from several moths ago on this channel. Those would be some very angry, very smelly ghosts!
Without visiting the building myself, I've no opinion as to whether it's haunted. But You've certainly convinced me if it is, it's not by Katherine Howard, nor any other Tudor-era individual
All though Kathrine isn’t my favorite queen, what happened to her is still heartbreaking and she definitely deserved better than Henry. I hope she’s resting easy in heaven ❤
@@Emily-l9g I'm an American, but I'm fascinated with your history (even thought we had our 1776), and I agreed with you, Katherine Howard grew up in a very dysfunctional family, no one cared for her and neither loved her, so when Henry VIII gave her so much attention, she fell for it, and the sad thing was that her family pushed her into that awful marriage, and not only that, her lovers took advantage of her need to be loved also. RIP Katherine.
I visited the gallery on several occasions and never noticed anything odd about it. Still , this is a delightful story for the week of Halloween. I would love to hear a Halloween story from Ireland sometime, if you ever decide to explore something from Irish history.
Well there's quite a few weird things going on at least NEAR Hampton Court, but not ghosties. I agree with you. It might also be randy foxes. Interesting, and some really nice footage in this. Thank you! 🌟👍
My daughtef and i visited a couple of years ago, it was quite a cold day wandering around, however, on entering the gallery both us us felt like we'd entered a freezer! I swear the temperature dropped 20 degrees! So glad to get out of that part, we felt really creeped out
@@HistoryCalling hehe. I have an apartment but I have a long weekend coming up so I’m spending Halloween with them. I did buy treats for my work mates though.
Ah, you see the benefit of being self-employed is that I don't have to buy stuff for work mates. The disadvantage is that there are no work mates to buy me anything :-)
I remember when myself and my hubby visited Hampton Court. It was snowing and when we went into the haunted gallery, it was FREEZING. I remember thinking ‘I wonder if that has anything to do with this area being allegedly haunted?’ People just love ghost stories and I think Hampton Court has gone along with it as an idea to get more tourism.
I think all those old castles and palaces are just cold in the winter to be honest. There's no modern insulation in them and lots of large rooms with big, single-paned windows (where there are widows at all). I agree that HCP is just using this story to get in more tourists, but at least it's working for them and I got a video idea out of it, so I can't complain :-)
@@HistoryCalling thats true, and I also remember people talking about being haunted, which may have made it feel colder for me. It’s a great idea for a spooky historical video for Halloween and it’s another great vid ❤
My brother in law broke a bed jumping up out of it when he heard foxes and thought someone was being assaulted. It really is horrific! Foxes used to wake me up a lot in the night when I was little and it terrified me.
that bit about the magnetic field was really interesting--i'd like to see if any haunted places in the US have that same kind of phenomena! great job as usual 🥰
This video is so perfectly timed for me! I woke up the other day and realized that I am around the age Katheryn would have been. Since then I can't stop thinking about her. I keep imagining her as one of my friends, or me, or just anyone at my highschool. I know what she did was stupid, but it's something I can see myself or my friends doing in her position. I keep thinking it was stupid teenage, "Im smarter than everyone" over- confidence that got her, and how even if it was different times, our brains are all the same. Thinking of her running down the hall screaming for mercy fills me with the worst kind of dread.
I've missed seeing Hampton Court the 3 times I've been to England, but really want to see it, if only for the Tudor era construction (I'd love some diapered bricks on my house). I have been a "ghost hunter" in the past, with a healthy dose of skepticism. In the dozens (hundreds?) of homes, museums, and businesses I've investigated, only one made me feel like something was there. By one window, it felt like I was too close to an old CRT TV - staticky - then became deeply sad to bawling my eyes out. No reason, just got super emotional. But that personal experience won't "prove" the existence of ghosts. It just made ME believe a bit more.
This is very interesting, thank you. While I've had experiences, and we, as a family have had experiences, not everything is paranormal, and often it's suggestion and pareidolia etc. We lived in a house temporarily between moves we were told was haunted - ummm - no; it wasn't. lol. The house we own now makes noises across the floor in the bedroom that the ceiling of is the lounge. This house is not haunted by anything except a bit too much dust, but if one had a tendency to hysteria, one would think it was, as the floors creaking around by themselves sound just like my son wandering around, as that's his bedroom. And why is it that female hauntings usually seem to involve a white dress? lol.
I know exactly what you mean. My house creaks in the night too, but it's just the floorboards contracting/expanding in the heat/cold. The white dress thing is indeed quite the ghost trope, isn't it :-)
Yes, the fact that Katherine didn't even die at HCP or spend much of her life there is just another hole in this particular tale. The Tower would make much more sense.
Did I think the gallery was haunted before watching this video? No Did I believe Katherine Howard tried to see Henry before he left. Yes Ah well, you can't be right about everything! 🤭😊
I’m not a believer in ghosts, but in 1997 while I was at Hampton Court on Katherine’s birthday and while the guide was talking about her in the Gallery, the chandeliers flickered. Real or Lucy Worsley playing tricks?
Haha, I love the idea that Lucy Worsley is sitting in a room somewhere, watching CCTV cameras of the tourists, making the lights flicker to freak them out and laughing maniacally, possibly whilst wearing a Tudor era costume.
It’s weird what tricks your mind can play on you, my ex sister in law worked at Hampton Court (as far as I know she still does) and she took me and my ex around for a private tour around midnight one day (can’t remember what month but it was cold so winter) when we walked down the haunted gallery just the 3 of us you could hear every creak and you did feel like something or someone was there obviously there wasn’t and we didn’t see anything but was still spooky, she admitted afterwards that she was going to get another person who worked there to jump out on us when we were in the gallery I’m glad she didn’t I probably would have embarrassed myself and passed out!
Ok, first of all I'm so jealous that you got a private tour of HCP! People would pay good money for that :-) I certainly agree that places like that can feel quite creepy, especially at night. They're so big, dark and draughty and we're so aware of all the history associated with them. I'm sure it would have given me the chills as well.
Hello history calling. I was reading this discussion about empress Elizabeth of Austria and the person said In the discussion : no Emperor’s Elizabeth and Vienna. It’s likely a good thing. The woman-And this is putting it politely-A walking disaster.
Well, Elizabeth wasn’t particularly popular in the Vienna court. She was a narcissist, stuck up, and basically a female, Henry the eight in terms of personality
@@DarthDread-oh2ne I would probably agree that she was difficult, but a powerless pussycat next to Henry. I'm not sure, though, why being basically a femaie is thought to be the equivalent of being stuck up and a narcissist.
When I visited, I remember being underwhelmed by the "haunted" gallery. Not that it wasn't lovely and the art was fantastic and it was awesome to walk in the footsteps of famous people. But with all the hype about the haunted gallery I expected it to be more dramatic somehow, longer, darker, not right off the main drag ...it seemed very ordinary to me!
Yes, it's surprisingly short, isn't it? I think you can see that in my footage of it but it's even more obvious in person. It just ain't that big. Like you wouldn't be able to get up much speed if you were running down it.
I heard that story from a tour guide when I toured Hampton Court as a teen; great story. Everyone loves a good ghost story, Great topic for Halloween! Maybe someone saw something weird and someone identified it as Katherine?

I to am jealous, wish I was there
If there is such a thing as an afterlife, I hope poor Katherine Howard’s ghost is somewhere else and having a much nicer time than she did during her final days here 😢💔

I hope you enjoy the Tudor binge watch :-)
I don't think I would have liked the foxes I'm afraid, so rather you than me :-)
I love that you named one "Boo Radley". I can still remember the book fairly well, and the movie almost as well. :)
@@Skirt553 She got that name by hiding behind a tree and shyly peeking out at me every night before coming into the open. I usually just called her 'Boo"...she was a sweety.
I love when you refute crazy stories with logical research and evidence. 🙂
Thank you. Yes, we do love a good ghost story, that much is true at least :-)
I like how every supposedly haunted place always has a "lady in a white dress" ghost 😅
They do seem to be very popular don't they? 👻
I´m almost impressed that our local ghost is actually a lady in a black dress😅 Although no one can ever agree on who she´s supposed to be ...

So we did, and a teenager about our age answered,
"This might seem weird, but my grandparents used to own the house two doors over, and my mom told me stories about this place."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. So, um, does weird stuff happen here sometimes?"
"...yeah, it does."
"Well, if it's any consolation, they were good people, passed away of natural causes. Just don't be rude or disrespectful to your parents. I've heard they don't like that kinda stuff."
I admire your courage in going over to the haunted house. I don't think I would have done so.
@@sirsplintfastthepungent1373 That is eerie.
As a side note, Vic Tandy's work on the association between infrasound and hauntings is fascinating.
Your polite contempt for this story is wonderful!
Well done to your friend Mike for figuring it out. I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to.
Ghost stories were, and remain, very popular, no castle, great house, or palace is worth its salt unless it possesses a headless figure or a white lady. It is gift shop tosh, but less fattening than fudge or shortbread.
@@terryroots5023 Extremely well-said!
Thank you very much 😊
I expected this to be a very short episode; "Does Katherine Howard's ghost haun-No, ghosts aren't real." 😂
I like how you treated the question like any other historic claim though!
@@HistoryCalling I agree, it surprised me too, once you exposed the flimsy roots of it. Thanks again!

I am Australian and we don't have many foxes here in our cities. I recall watching some BBC series when I was younger, there were night scenes out in the countryside with what sounds like a woman shrieking in the background and wondered why no one acknowledged it.

My daughtef and i visited a couple of years ago, it was quite a cold day wandering around, however, on entering the gallery both us us felt like we'd entered a freezer! I swear the temperature dropped 20 degrees! So glad to get out of that part, we felt really creeped out
I think most hauntings are an energy imprint. I don't think ghosts are trapped souls. At least, I hope not.
Happy Monday HC 👋 what do you normally do for Halloween, if anything?
Eat the sweets I bought to give out to trick or treaters :-)
@@HistoryCalling lol. I’ll probably be helping my parents give out treats this year
Good for you for not gobbling them up yourself :-)
@@HistoryCalling hehe. I have an apartment but I have a long weekend coming up so I’m spending Halloween with them. I did buy treats for my work mates though.
Ah, you see the benefit of being self-employed is that I don't have to buy stuff for work mates. The disadvantage is that there are no work mates to buy me anything :-)
Such a great storyteller.
Thank you :-)
I remember when myself and my hubby visited Hampton Court.
Yes, it would be very interesting to put that theory to the test in other places too.
She played a serious game...And lost. Completely tragic.
Yes, poor girl. She was in way over her head (no pun intended) and it got her killed. :-(
She was very clearly neglecting her haunting duties. 😊
Totally. I mean where was she all those centuries?
This video is so perfectly timed for me! I woke up the other day and realized that I am around the age Katheryn would have been. Since then I can't stop thinking about her. I keep imagining her as one of my friends, or me, or just anyone at my highschool. I know what she did was stupid, but it's something I can see myself or my friends doing in her position. I keep thinking it was stupid teenage, "Im smarter than everyone" over- confidence that got her, and how even if it was different times, our brains are all the same.
Thinking of her running down the hall screaming for mercy fills me with the worst kind of dread.
I know what you mean. It's horrible to think of how young she was and how frightened after Henry abandoned her.
Your sarcasm and cynicism had me chuckling.
Thank you :-)
Another bonus comment to boost the engagement algorithm. lol
If she is, she deserves better.
Oh you have to get to HCP. Ghost or not, it's still a great day out. I wonder why that one location in particular had such an effect on you?
The white dress thing is indeed quite the ghost trope, isn't it :-)
Why would Katherine Howard haunt Hampton Court while Anne Boleyn prefers the Tower, frightening Victorian guards?
Maybe Anne kicked her out? 😊😂
@@NoewerrATall Anne was there first & wouldn’t have let her in.
Yes, the fact that Katherine didn't even die at HCP or spend much of her life there is just another hole in this particular tale. The Tower would make much more sense.
@@HistoryCalling I’d rather KH were haunting Syon Abbey. I’m sure that the Duke of Northumberland has space for a ghost.
It would be very interesting if another investigation was done in the night and early hours, that in a sense would give off a whole different vibe.
It’s quite interesting that most of the historical myths started in the Victorian era. People were obsessed with ghosts and wanted to scare others.
Did I think the gallery was haunted before watching this video?
No
Did I believe Katherine Howard tried to see Henry before he left.
Yes
Ah well, you can't be right about everything! 🤭😊
At least we get a good ghost story out of this Victorian fabrication though and HCP makes extra money by attracting tourists with this tale.
A bonus comment to boost the engagement algorithm. :p
Another bonus comment to boost the engagement algorithm.
Thank you (and for the other comments too) :-)
It’s weird what tricks your mind can play on you, my ex sister in law worked at Hampton Court (as far as I know she still does) and she took me and my ex around for a private tour around midnight one day (can’t remember what month but it was cold so winter) when we walked down the haunted gallery just the 3 of us you could hear every creak and you did feel like something or someone was there obviously there wasn’t and we didn’t see anything but was still spooky, she admitted afterwards that she was going to get another person who worked there to jump out on us when we were in the gallery I’m glad she didn’t I probably would have embarrassed myself and passed out!
I'm sorry. I don't quite follow the comment they made. What about Elizabeth and Vienna?
Yes, I think it's a great story and HCP have definitely monitised it very well, so props to them for that.
