I just bought a 250mAh battery for mine. Thanks for putting the link for the adapter cable in your video description. That saved me a lot of time from searching around.
+airdirtpc No problem. Hey if you are going to only be running larger batts with that "mcpx" connector, you may want to think about changing over the connector on the plane. It'll give the plane a little more power fom that batt because you eliminate the problematic pico connector (those are bad anyways), and also the extra connection from the adapter. But as you see in video, the adapter system still works fine for the most part until the pico connector wears out- which they always seem to do..
+BWX I might do that. At the moment I only have one larger battery and quite a few smaller ones so I'm not in a rush, but if I get into it more I'll have to try changing it.
airdirtpc What I ended up doing was making an adapter for the smaller ones.. Hehe. But I usually just run the bigger ones. But yeah it depends on how many you have of each.
+BWX haha. that doesn't sound too bad either. You probably get some good flight time running the larger ones too. It seemed like it in the video. I can notice a bit of a difference using only a 180mAh over the standard 150mAh.
Yeah you get around 10 to 15 min run-times even at full throttle most of the time with a 300mah batt. Never loses power either, has lots of power the entire flight. Runs great on those.
BWX, great video. I just received my Sports Cub S today and it didn't come with the manual and other document that came with it. And also the plastic piece that goes underneath the body, I only received the plane, battery and the USB charger. I'm going to call them up tomorrow and tell them about the stuff that are missing.
Thanks! Yeah that in unusual that you didn't get everything, usually HH is pretty good about that. Did you check under the foam? Sometimes the manuals are taped underneath. You probably checked but if not, it might be there.
I watched another video and it showed where the manual is at I am good now. Thanks for your reply. No chance fly it yet. It is still too cold here in Iowa and alot if snow too.
Hi I'm going to be getting the sport cub s soon and larger batteries is something I want saw this thread so I just need the batteries and the adapter can I charge the batteries with the adapter as I have a 4 port c electro charger model number eflc1004 I would like to use to charge the 300 mah batteries
Just out of curiosity I checked and they still sell them. Not sure I would get them from HK though, maybe better options available now, not sure. hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-nano-tech-300mah-1s-45c-lipo-pack-suits-fbl100-and-blade-mcpx.html
I really don't know if the slightly higher voltage will wreck anything or not. What's the difference between fully charged normal lipo and that, like 0.15v? 4.2v vs 4.35v? Usually electronics will cope with +10% voltage but just not sure about the board in this plane. I haven't messed around with these planes in a few years now.
I made this video a long time ago. I have a DX9 radio. And I just followed whatever it said in the manual. I really can’t remember exactly off the top of my head.
Sometimes the manual is stuck to the bottom of the bottom piece of packing foam! Taped to bottom.Sometimes.. If you google "how to bind hobbyzone Sport Cub S" there are videos though.
Where is the link to that specific battery? When I look up 300mAh MCPX batteries on Google, I get all sorts of different looking batteries that do not look like the one you have!
Oh man.. it's been a while since I looked those things up. I used to get them on hobbyking and they had the mcpx type connector. www.ebay.com/i/281916527117 Who knows if that link will work. It's like these but with mcpx connector hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-nano-tech-300mah-1s-45-90c-lipo-pack-fits-nine-eagles-solo-pro-100.html either of these will work the same I think in that plane hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-nano-tech-300mah-1s-45c-lipo-pack-suits-fbl100-and-blade-mcpx.html hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-nano-tech-300mah-1s-35c-lipo-pack-suits-fbl100-and-blade-mcpx.html
I think it is way too heavy. I mean it might be able to carry it barely, but it would be pretty silly. It (this plane) is set up for and FPV camera transmitter though, but I think that unit is quite a bit lighter weight than Mobius.
Cory Reeves I think Mobius is a little bit heavier. I weighed my UMX radian and it's is 40.4gm, and the Mobius is something like 38gm. That's a lot of weight, but yes it will do it, it just won't be much fun to fly it like that. I think the Sport Cub S is around 2 oz., or 57 gm. I haven't weighed mine to check but I am sure that number is close. That's still a lot of weight to stick on the plane. It will change the way it flies quite a bit. I put a 13.9gm micro FPV (including extra batt) setup on UMX Radian and it still flew good.. It till would glide motor off, etc, but not nearly as long. Putting something that much heavier is just too much weight I think. I'll upload the pics of my UMX to picasa and put a link here.. I also tried the Spektrum/ Fatshark micro FPV unit and it flew ok with that too.. The lens kept falling off cause the glue wouldn't dry so I got a refund for that. Here's that link. Thats why i have both a mobius and the 808 # 16 lens d. The 808 camera is made by the makers of the mobius. The 808 #16 lens d has a 120 degree wide angle lens and shoots 720p HD at 30 FPS and it weights just 19.5 grams. Even my alias can carry the 808 camera. I don't have an FPV rig I have a phantom for FPV. I just stick cameras on my aircraft for line of site aerial video.
Yeah, I'm taking it to the hobby shop tomorrow. I don't have the tools to fix it. But if the board is fried I will contact HH. Thanks for your help bud!
+FiveStar68 Yeah I think it has nothing to do with the adapter, so do not tell them about it- they will just blame it on that. Call HH and they will send you a new plane, especially if it is fairly new. The wires should not melt. It probably is because of a fault on the mainboard or maybe a short in the motor or wires inside the plane somewhere.
+FiveStar68 BTW I would understand why you would think it was the adapter. it may have been a defective adapter, but I would just mark that one and not use it again JUST in case.. If you want to run these mcpx style batts, buy a new adapter just in case. Maybe even get a "heavier duty" adapter. I'll see if I can find a better one on e-bay to point you to. BTW tell the hobby shop it is impossible to plug in batt wrong! You literally can't do it unless you basically smash it together so hard things break..
I used my jst I soddered I got with my aero mini. It's a 800mah. It flies fine. I carved some foam and use Velcro and a blue rubber band. 32 min flight max
Hi there can someone tell me from all the different suggestions what would be the best (safe no wire melting) bigger battery and cable to use currently? I started flying just 10 days ago - thanks ;)
The adapter in the link will work fine. Best to change connector on plane to an mcpx type, and use a 300 mah batt like the 300 mah 45c nanotech. Best to not use adapter if possible, but it will work as i showed in vid.
+Main UA-cam Acc oh yeah, very easy to do. soldering is fun and easy so it's worth knowing how to do it. I would watch some soldering tutorial vids here on UA-cam. Use only 60/40 rosin core lead solder- not that non-lead crap. Never breath in the smoke, wash hands after handling solder, Keep tip clean, and you'll be surprised how easy soldering really is. It's worth the effort to solder on a better connector too. It'll make the bigger batts work better with the plane.
After watching this vid I picked up a couple of 300 mAh batteries, wondering if there are any issues with the motor over heating with running 2 in a row, about 20-30 min flight times?
I really don't think so but I've had motors die in about 20 minutes of flying and I've had motors that I have lasted three years of crazy long FPV flights and other long flights. I try not to run them flat out for the entire pack and vary the throttle once in a while. But these brushed motors will just die all the time anyways. Once in a while you'll get a good one that last forever.
+FiveStar68 Yeah if your wires melted they will. Call HH, and select the call back option. Tell them your LHS giving you a hard time, claiming you plugged in battery backwards. Tell them that your wires melted. They might ask for plane back, might not. Might ask for pics of melted wires, or a video of melted wires. Not sure. The wires melting is a problem with the plane I am sure. I'd still not use that adapter on next plane just to be on the safe side. But plugging in an adapter is not the cause of melted wires unless it is defective, something else is the cause. 1-888-959-2305 for Horizon Hobby "air" (planes) department.
I was wondering if the 300mAh battery would fit. Where did you get the cable, I have been looking for an extension cable so I can fly with a bigger battery but that small little plug (Pico??) I can't find extension cables.
Oh yeah.. that link is in the description. And yup my 300mah batts fit perfect. I think there is a "slo-mo" part in the vid that shows what it looks like. It is at the bottom of the screen though, not a great shot from hat-cam. I'll see if I can find it.
Here it is @ 0:12 ua-cam.com/video/w3XInpnagP8/v-deo.html It fits in the battery slot perfect. I am actually going to change over the plug from the plane to MCPX style connector and get rid of adapter, and then make an adapter to work for smaller batts if I ever want to fly with them but I probably won't. I like the way it flies with the 300mah better actually. You can get slightly bigger prop to give it more power too. GWS or something like that.
I took a screenshot and brightened it. been meaning to do that for a while anyways. Yup- it fits perfect. lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AeGVFaVUmHE/VQLX3D9gIgI/AAAAAAAAHOQ/xmySCNnKCOM/s1920/HZ%2520Sport%2520Cub%2520S-300mah.jpg
+TheEnragedGamer I don't think so. Maybe it would still fly with one, but it wouldn't really fit. I think 600mah is max, but 300 actually works the best.
Thanks! Most likely just ailerons. I think you could disable the rudder on this plane if you wanted to. I used it for knife edge passes and flat turns and hammerheads, etc., though, in some of the other vids. For regular turns though, on this plane, "bank and yank" works well.
BWX, I don't mean to ask a stupid question, but in the description for this video you say that your battery is a 45-90 C, but at the end of your video you call for a 35-70 C. Which one did you use in the video? Which one do you prefer? What is the difference as far as performance?
Yeah I made a mistake in the vid. It is a 45-90C 300mAh. www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__59259__Turnigy_nano_tech_300mah_1S_45C_Lipo_Pack_Suits_FBL100_and_Blade_mCPx_AR_Warehouse_.html Very strong little 1S batt. I am actually going to cut off stock connectors on the S Cub S and install the mcpx type female connectors for spring season.. and eliminate adapter, and just always fly the 300mAh packs.
lmdetect And you can get smaller packs than 300mAh that use that larger connector too, so you wouldn't be stuck w/ 300mAh either. You could always run a reverse adapter to run the 150mAh packs if needed too. I am going to make one of those adapters with stuff I just got from HH. I ordered one of these: (for the female connectors to solder onto Sport Cub S2) "Balance Charging Cable 3-in-1, Type PHR-2 MHE3PHR2" And one of these: "Battery Connector w/Wire (PKZ3052)" Above is small female connector so I can make a "reverse" adapter to run smaller 150mAh packs after i change over to the larger plug.
lmdetect No problem. I haven't actually tried it yet though. It should be fine, but ya never know. I will definitely update this comment thread when I do though. possibly make another vid too.
+Brayd24 Yeah, it'll just take longer.. I'd get a hobby charger if you plan to fly a lot, you can safely charge these batts in 30 min, 20min, even 15min or even faster depending on the particular batt. -and thanks for watching!
+Brayd24 Check this vid out- ua-cam.com/video/vRICt2nl5Nw/v-deo.html I think the B6AC is out of stock now, but I got the SkyRC B6AC as my first charger and it is great. There are many cheap clones out there though.. sold as "B6AC", and you DO NOT want a clone. They are dangerous. Sometimes they even cost the same. You want a genuine one. Those other chargers in that vid are great too, but you need a separate PSU too. Maybe for your 1st one, an integrated PSU (like the B6AC has) is easier. But it's not bad to get a PSU and AC charger to plug into it for your first hobby charger either. There are lots of good ones out there though. I'm not sure which charger you have now- the little USB one? There are other 1S chargers form HH that aren't too bad for 1S batts. Those little square ones. They work ok for these batts because you can adjust the charging time. I used to have a bunch of those actually, before I got my first hobby charger. They did ok.
+Brayd24 If it doesn't say it does lipos, then it doesn't. Be very careful when charging lipos! People have burned down their house, even people that knew what they were doing. I'd research the subject quite a bit before you charge a lipo on a charger where you set the current/ etc. And make sure you read up on safety of handling lipos before do anything. Even these little ones can be dangerous. But if it said it can do lipos, then yes it will just need an adapter, but it will need to charge that batt at a pretty low rate, like 0.3 amps or 0.6amps (1C or 2C for a 300mah 1S batt). Usually anything called a "peak" charger is made for NiMh and Nicads though. BTW a hobby grade charger will be able to charge those older types of batts too, you just have to set them to do that. That's the great thing about a good hobby charger, they can charge lots of different kinds of batt, even your car battery.. Or use your car battery to charge your lipos, or use your car batt to discharge your lipos. Or you can even use your lipos (big ones) to charge you car batt if you had too. They are pretty cool.
Just tried this mod and it melted my wires. Did exactly what you did. Bought the lead and exact batteries. What the hell happened? I may have to buy a new Sport Cub S Receiver/ESC unit. Suks!!!!!!!!!!
+FiveStar68 Melted your wires? Maybe you had a poor connection which raised the resistance, which raised the temperature on the connector and that melted the wires. Did it fly at all? Maybe the polarity was reversed on the connector (detective)? Hard to speculate. I don't know why that would wreck the plane though unless it shorted and caught fire or something. I only did this as a test, and then soldered on an MCPX type connector because pico connectors suck. They wear out quickly and have randomly poor connections. Now I run these 300mah batts with no adapter. I would suggest you do the same if you want to run these better batts. I use an adapter now if I want to use smaller pico connector batts (but I never do, as they are generally weak batts).
+FiveStar68 Another thing you could do is call HH and tell them your wires melted. Don't say a thing about the adapter, because it probably had nothing to do with the adapter. I flew mine plenty of times with the adapter and it was fine, and so have many other people. Or just solder on that mcpx connector and see if it works if you don't want to get HH involved.
Called my Hobby Shop and they feel I plugged the battery in backwards. Grrrrr Taking it to them tomorrow for repair. Just hope the board is not fried! Appreciate the reply bud! Just stared this hobby so "live and learn".
+Marcin Soltysiuk That doesn't have anything to do with using larger battery. It's not as if you're using more voltage or anything. BTW, this was just a test, I changed connector after that and it flew great, no issues.
+Marcin Soltysiuk OIC. That sucks. You can get a new board for around $50 sometimes on sale at different websites or maybe LHS. I HAd to replace mine when I pulled a trace off when removing servo plug.
Yeah sucks. I thought that this not cheap electronic is secured for that problem, but it isn't. Maybe I can repair this, now I'm waiting for some electronic elements for this.
Yeah you get around 10 to 15 min run-times even at full throttle most of the time with a 300mah batt. Never loses power either, has lots of power the entire flight. Runs great on those.

Thanks! Most likely just ailerons. I think you could disable the rudder on this plane if you wanted to. I used it for knife edge passes and flat turns and hammerheads, etc., though, in some of the other vids. For regular turns though, on this plane, "bank and yank" works well.
Turns out on beginner and intermediate flight modes, there is an aileron > rudder mix built into Rx.

Very strong little 1S batt. I am actually going to cut off stock connectors on the S Cub S and install the mcpx type female connectors for spring season.. and eliminate adapter, and just always fly the 300mAh packs.
BWX
I like the 300 idea, but I think I'll go with an adapter as well. Might eventually do what you're doing though.
lmdetect And you can get smaller packs than 300mAh that use that larger connector too, so you wouldn't be stuck w/ 300mAh either. You could always run a reverse adapter to run the 150mAh packs if needed too. I am going to make one of those adapters with stuff I just got from HH.
I ordered one of these: (for the female connectors to solder onto Sport Cub S2)
"Balance Charging Cable 3-in-1, Type PHR-2
MHE3PHR2"
And one of these:
"Battery Connector w/Wire (PKZ3052)"
Above is small female connector so I can make a "reverse" adapter to run smaller 150mAh packs after i change over to the larger plug.
BWX
ok, I see. Thank you for the part numbers. That's a big help for someone new to the hobby. Think I'll follow your lead on this.
lmdetect No problem. I haven't actually tried it yet though. It should be fine, but ya never know.
I will definitely update this comment thread when I do though. possibly make another vid too.
Can I charge the 300mAh battery with the regular charger it comes with? Thanks, and great video!
+Brayd24 Yeah, it'll just take longer.. I'd get a hobby charger if you plan to fly a lot, you can safely charge these batts in 30 min, 20min, even 15min or even faster depending on the particular batt. -and thanks for watching!
+BWX Thanks, do you recommend any chargers?
+Brayd24 Check this vid out-

I think the B6AC is out of stock now, but I got the SkyRC B6AC as my first charger and it is great.
I have a traxxas fast charger do you think that could work if I found an adapter? (its called Easy Peak Plus)
What type of adapter cord did you use, did you have to have it to work?
I think you could make one yourself with the right connectors... but I just got them at Horizon Hobby..

Thanks a lot, that is great, cheap too.
Sue Smethwick Yup I bought like three or four when I put in an order for other stuff. Great to have around if you fly micros.
Just tried this mod and it melted my wires. Did exactly what you did. Bought the lead and exact batteries. What the hell happened? I may have to buy a new Sport Cub S Receiver/ESC unit. Suks!!!!!!!!!!
+FiveStar68
Melted your wires?
I did it the same, and it seams that one smd called DVR8833 is burned :(
+Marcin Soltysiuk That doesn't have anything to do with using larger battery. It's not as if you're using more voltage or anything. BTW, this was just a test, I changed connector after that and it flew great, no issues.
But i changed myself connector in larger battery 300mah 3.7V and i reversed the polarity in cables
