This song is "Gnossienne #1" by Erik Satie originally written in the 1890s for piano. The Gnossiennes were highly experimental pieces, lacking the usual form and structure of classical music, in "free time".
When I decided to dance to this piece for the show, I felt inspired by my recent trip to Crete and Egypt and went on stage bringing with me the love that I have for these places and the inspiration that they give me, hoping that these feelings would shine through in my dance.
Coincidentally, I found out today that the term "Gnossienne" is said to derive from the name of the Cretan city “Knossos”, home of the story of King Minos and the minotaur. If you know me, you know my deep love for Crete and how I keep returning to this beautiful land.
I have always loved this song, "Gnoissienne #1", and now it all makes even more sense that Satie was also inspired by Crete, and over 100 years later, it still resonates in his song.
