Preach!! I turned down work i refuse to do replicas. Integrity is everything.
I see a lot of people who call themselves "designers" but that's not what I see when I see their work. To be quite frank what I see are either replicas of the same ole thing as everyone else and or people who know nothing not even 1 technical term but making reference to having a "line" and producing items that look homemade and underwhelming. This is a conversation that I've had quite often within my circle of creative friends and we choose to shy away from the terminology due to what we consider to be misuse and not wanting to be connected to either term. You also touched on another point which I loved in regards to a persons ability to create or rather duplicate a look. It has to be tiring to attempt to see the world through the eyes of someone else because it's impossible! If you have to ask when you're stuck "hey how do I finish this off" is one thing but to ask for steps "A-Z" put the needle down and enroll in some classes. I feel too many people are in it for the hustle and their work reflects it. The world is starving for fresh new and innovative so why not be authentic and give it to them.
Malkia Gordon I agree with this wholeheartedly! 🙌🏾
Preach. all. this.. Not just as fashion designers - it's the same with graphic designers and artists. An illustrator I know walked into a major supermarket to find one of her illustrations on a tshirt . Some git had scrolled through instagram, seen her illustration and gone 'yep. that'll do'. Didn't contact her, didn't seek her permission, didn't give her a penny. some of the colours in the illustration had been changed but it was a blatant copy/paste job. And I agree with you - I hate designers who do this - if you can't be arsed to come up with original ideas and put in the work you're in the wrong industry and you have absolutely no business calling yourself a designer. Using copy/paste isn't design it's laziness. There's a difference between being inspired and influenced, and being a straight up plagiariser. She actually took them to court and won because it was a breach of intellectual copyright. She was smart and had hidden her signature in all of her illustrations so they didn't have a leg to stand on. I've no idea how you'd protect yourself in the fashion industry though.
All of this 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I'll add that being a seamstress is TOTALLY OKAY too but you gotta be honest with yourself and your clients, period.
Tattiana Lumpkins yes! There is nothing wrong with being a seamstress but the two definitions are definitely confused!
I love this!! I agree with you 100%
Speaking as a professional seamstress who does remake pictures of outfits received from clients--I NEVER claim to have designed something that I didn’t design. I use pattern software and my experience with pattern drafting to remake the outfits My client wants. In the end, I always add my little something to my work. I haven’t seen anything out there that was unique--everyone has inspiration from others. Not trying to take from you or any other designer. I hope you find your niche and your endeavors are successful.
Thanks alot ma, I've really learnt alot from what you've just said
Because others are doing it doesn't mean it's right
Please ma how can I grow
How do I go about being a designer
Am still an apprentice and I've never design anything for myself but I copied others work and I don't want to do it again
Please what can I do
I really want to learn
Looking forward to hearing from you ma
Thanks in advance
