I see the same kind of comments whenever machinery, power tools, sports, firearms or anything that has any kind of safety rules, best procedures or where any measure of caution is required. Even the field of outdoor activity is dominated by keyboard survivalists who shoot down recreational outdoor activity in mild weather with "You'll be dead in a week." type comments. On one of my old videos I made the mistake to use an example of getting "quality gear" having struggled for years with a crappy chainsaw and investing in a new one made my life much easier. They didn't agree with that, how could they if they could make comments like "You'll run out of gas and be dead in a week with your fancy chainsaw." It's all about having some kind of perceived superiority and control in the discussion by having the final word about anything. As long as they can box in the "self proclaimed expert" they are happy. I'm only too happy to come across anything that might help me learn something new, instead of being terrified and endlessly bothered by discovering that someone may actually know something more than me and therefore must be shouted down by any means possible !!!

Ryky: So great to see you back doing what you do best, enlightening the amazing world of craftsmanship in cutlery and how to care for said cutlery. I am deeply sorry for your losses with the theft you've experienced and in some way can commiserate. As a high school student, I got into playing bass guitar and eventually ended up in a rock band. My first bass along with a bunch of other gear was stolen after one of our band's gigs, the result of which was I needed to purchase a new bass to continue. I ended up buying a much better bass, one that I spent months searching for in a large number of music stores. I remember finding this bass, a Fender USA (made in Fullerton!) Precision Bass that fit and played perfectly. I was able to work out a deal and was the proud owner of an amazing bass. I played this bass through high school in my band, as a college undergrad and then as a grad student. I remember that after long days in grad school, I would often come home to unwind by playing along with my favorite tunes with this bass. It really got me through some tough times. Fast forward to many years later, and that bass along with another that I'd picked up as an adult with a family and another band, was stolen from my garage. I was on a far away business trip when my wife told me that she'd forgotten to close the garage door and found the next morning that it had been stolen along with my newer bass. I was initially devastated, thinking about the impact that bass had on my life. Once I returned home and thought about the loss, I realized that it was just a piece of wood. I ended up getting another (even better!) bass and still continue to play nearly every week, improving my skill. The loss of that first bass, and then its replacement of 30 years, was painful. But, both of those basses were instrumental (forgive the pun!) in my development as a better bass player and my enjoyment of the craft. I will continue to make music and hopefully, joyful music!

Well caring for an antique such as this is very very important.
The slightest mar to any part of the piece and devalue it, so proper care and maintenance is a must.
Though seeing as this man is a collector sinking thousands into his hobby, I'm sure he understands that well enough to not get chewed out for it.

@@GaisaSanktejo Actually no it's not the oils that are corrosive. It is the salt from your sweat that causes it.
Salt is an electrolyte which conducts ions speeding up the process of oxidation (aka rust) which is why on ocean faring boats we place sacrificial pieces of conductive metal on the hull so it corrodes those instead of the hull.
You can handle the blade of a sword all day and do it no harm so long as you clean the blade afterwards.

The licensing of swords is not done by the ministry of the interior/police, but through the local branch of the ministry of education and culture. Functional swords are illegal in Japan unless they have historical or cultural significance, thus it's in the realm of the ministry of education and culture. That means you can't legally own a functional fantasy sword in Japan, swords need to be historical in design and materials as well as have artistic value; mass-produced WWII era Japanese swords are outlawed as well.
