Princess Margaret has become known as a truly unique member of the Royal Family.
She is known for her daring and flashy fashion sense- which pioneered a new way of presenting as royal. She is also known for the heartbreak that was persistent in her life. From adulterous affairs to divorce and illness, Princess Margaret went through a lot.
Although her childhood was idyllic and harmonious, the death of her father would cause everything to change. Suddenly Margaret’s sister was Queen of England. Leaving her as the spare. This turn of fate would affect Margaret throughout her life.
Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was very different from the Queen as she was commonly known as a rebellious royal. But despite their natural differences, Princess Margaret always had a close-knit relationship with the Queen throughout her reign.
Princess Margaret is truly one of a kind.

" she could make you bend double in laughing and also touch you deeply in heart ", this is what Peter Townsend once said about her...i think that was the real Margaret....
If she had been allowed to get married to man she loved, she might have had a happy marriage and lived longer than it used to be.
How many more people will say this; she chose not to marry Townshend because she would have had to give up everything. Nothing to do with the church's teaching.
@@misscoutts6193
You are absolutely right: she could have married Townsend and she would not even have had to give up everything- just her Royal title .
@@Celisar1 people are always saying she had a tragic life. She loved being who she was. Possibly the worst thing to happen was the wedding gift from the Tennants of the plot of land on Mustique.
@@Celisar1 WRONG she would have kept her title but lost place of succession to the Throne. But Princess Margaret later admitted that she simply fell out of love with Townsend
@@randerson2525 only in love with herself, narcissist.
A strong lady and she should have been able to marry anyone she wanted.
She did, she chose Snowdon.
Second choice, and sadly, it didn't last. @@misscoutts6193
Margaret was so gorgeous, movie star good looking. I am American and I sure do miss the queen.
Yep she was beautiful. Even more than Elizabeth but somehow aged terribly. The queen aged beautifully.
I'm also an American. She was just so classy. I loved the way she dressed. I also miss her
@@tasibho She aged because of her drinking and smoking. She was beautiful. I liked her
As an American, I also liked Queen Elizabeth.
It's ironic that three of the Queens' four children divorced, and two remarried and one to a divorcee who is currently Queen Consort of the UK and called Queen. Margaret deserved better from her family and the government she deserved happiness.
Love you so much Princess Margaret. It's just fine to be rebellious... It's the way you do it. RIP 💙💙
Sad, that Princess Magaret had to give up the love of life and marry someone else. A great presentation of Princess Margaret.
Imagine being the first one in your family to divorce in 400 years and not get guilt tripped about it 😑
For having an age gap of only 4 years, Margaret looks much younger the QE2...
I am a great fan of Princess Margaret. She was so beautiful and regal. Margaret wasn't given the credit she deserved for all the royal duties she took on to assist the Queen. She was an asset to the queen, a very glamourous Princess. She was very popular with the press and the public. If She was allowed to marry the man, she loved then she would of been happy just like the Queen. I think Tony Armstrong Jones was not the right man for her. He did not understand her way of life and was a serial cheater, which lead to a disasters' marriage. If King George was alive, he would have found the right person for his daughter. For such a beautiful Princess her life is nothing short of a tragedy just like the late Princess Diana.
I've seen a billion of these shows and this had a pic I've NEVER seen! PM in the white rectangle shades! ❤🎉😂❤
ALL families have sibling rivalry!!!
Even a Princess Margaret documentary is mostly about Elizabeth
so much love for princess margaret, she’s so real. ❤ sadly she died before I was born🥺
Man, Margaret was a real looker in her 20s and 30s
Beautifully done; thanks so much for posting this. I have read that the one serious and ongoing bone of contention between Princess Margaret and her mother was over her education. Certainly the schooling provided by a governess (augmented by special lessons) was nowhere near adequate or fulfilling for anyone with the Princess's lively mind and intelligence. You can't help but wonder how her life might have turned out had she been allowed to go school and get a proper education.
After watching the series Crown, this documentary is much more meaningful
Margaret was a clever, capable , sensitive and modernized woman. She was a caring mother, president or patron of many organisations especially for children and AIDS. Unfortunately she was bullied hard by the press, she was misunderstood and misrepresented.
Having lots of affairs and smoking heavily doesn’t make you a modern woman.
@@Celisar1 what is your problem with her affairs ? Are you jealous?
Living off tax payers, not working one day on her life... drinking, smoking and getting layed is all she did.
@@Celisar1at the time it did😂
she was reasonably busy iwht her royal duties@@OrdinaryAlien

PRINCESS MARGARET LOVE 💗💗💗💗
My goodness. After so many years her magical voice, her pledge rings right thru my ears piercing through my heart & really makes reduces me to tears. You Elizabeth 2, is what a Woman Of Substance is made off. I honestly thank you for the free British Education we all received in early 50s. Missed your dearly. Always in my deep thoughts. Yours ever truly. Far East, 3 red World Commonwealth Country. ❤❤❤
Elizabeth would still have ended up as queen as her uncle had no kids.
Excellent perception!!! True!
If The Duke of Gloucester hadn't been killed in WW2 , He would've been King 😢
Yes just too late to become the record breaker she became. And no one knew he wouldn't have kids at the time so it still came as a shock, abdication was embarrassing

Real last Royal Princess!R.I.P HRH The Princess Margaret❤❤❤
Duty didn't come first for Margaret, money, status and titles did. There was no way she wanted to be just Maggie, she wanted to be a royal princess.
No, Princess Margaret could still marry Peter W. Townsend as well as keep her title & royal stipends along with the royal duties.
Her elder sister, i.e. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II & the Prime Minister R. Anthony Eden agreed to give their blessings - Eden was more sympathetic compared to his predecessor (Winston L. S. Churchill) as he was a divorcé himself like Townsend.
In fact, the British Government proposed to top-up Princess Margaret’s (1952) Civil List yearly allowance of GBP6,000 significantly by an additional GBP9,000 per annum should the marriage with Townsend go ahead - he after all still had to pay child allowance to his ex-wife.
Furthermore, the public by 1955 was generally supportive - people shouted cheers when she passed by that she could “go on [&] do what you want!”
However, Princess Margaret apparently felt the caveats to the proposed marriage, i.e. losing her place as well as those of any of her children if she had any in the line of succession & the civil wedding condition as the Church of England was not to be involved were not worth it.
“I have been aware that, subject to my renouncing my rights of succession, it might have been possible for me to contract a civil marriage.
But, mindful of the Church’s teaching that Christian marriage is indissoluble, and conscious of my duty to the Commonwealth, I have resolved to put these considerations before any others.
I have reached this decision entirely alone, and in doing so I have been strengthened by the unfailing support and devotion of Group Captain Townsend.”

What happened in May 1978 was different, i.e. she would not sacrifice her love for the Crown this time & became the first royal to divorce since King Henry VIII.
And this is ok
So sad Margaret couldn't marry the love of her life. So glad times have changed now.
She could have ,what are you talking about? Neither Could Charles ,if your way of thinking stands . The Queen was the person that counted ,Margaret was a drunk and a go to bed , her choice ,but she acted like someone was owe her something .
@@helleosborne7168 She could have married Peter Townsend, if she had been willing to give up her titles. She was not willing to give up her privileges as a Princess. I daresay that her attraction for Capt. Townsend was that she was a princess. It wouldn’t have worked out. Margaret was a near-teenager with daddy issues who developed a crush on her father’s handsome equerry. She didn’t have any opportunity to meet many eligible bachelors her own age living as sequestered as she did. Captain Townsend may have been crush worthy, But I find his actions predatory. He was 16 years her senior, old enough to be her father, and her father the king was his boss. Additionally he had a wife and two children. So I blame him for encouraging Margaret to fall in love with him. That never should’ve been on the table. He denied that she was the cause of his marriage break up, but I don’t suppose we will ever know the truth. She was grieving the loss of her father and he was right there in her proximity. He took advantage, even if Margaret could be very pushy. She remained fixated on him for the rest of her life but for his part he swiftly moved on and married a 19 year old Belgian girl practically as soon as she ended the romance. I think the fairytale would’ve ended very quickly If Margaret had renounced everything to marry him and move into a flat in Brussels as an attache’s wife. Peter knew it too.
She chose her title, position and cushy Royal life which was far more important to her than Townsend. You can not feel sorry for someone who chose material things over her relationship.
@@hazelpearson7807 that's a bit harsh. her choices were a rock and a hard space, and being alienated from her entire family and the life she had always known. H is paying that price now. its easy to say when we aren't in that position. She would not have survived outside the RF .. as far as being intelligent goes she was not particularly well educated and not motivated to be (no need to be). the queen pursued education because she realised she needed ot be as the queen. I recall (in the early eighties) hearing my parents fight about the education of myself and my sister where my father was convinced we didn't need an education 'because we would just end up married anyway". Margaret did not have any real skills (besides her looks). As for a relationship.. yes she was in love. He was a married man, years older than her. He was different. She was young and vulnerable. in these days we'd say he was a predator.
It is right there in the video that she could have.
Did you even WATCH it?
I can never forget Princess Elizabeth story time & at closing she eill call on Princess Margaret to wish BBC radio listeners "Good Nigh". These two were So So adorable. Brightens up my childhood days.
Margaret’s excuse for not marrying Townsend was the best piece of political spin ever.
This was a great documentary
Way to put yourself out there, Sarah! I am impressed with your academic credentials and love how you want to stretch and grow while enlightening us with your comment. so important that you want to keep this fun and not allow it to become a chore. Brilliant perspective. Also, you look fabulous. ❤
With regards to Townsend, recently uncovered Government documents reveal that Princess Margaret could have married him and KEPT her royal status and civil list allowance. The ONLY thing the Princess would have lost was her place in the succession to the Throne (at the time Princess Margaret was 3rd in line behind her sister's then 2 children so it was very unlikely she would have succeeded to the crown.) Margaret later admitted that she simply "fell out of love" with Townsend
Margaret had no choice but to fall out of love with Townsend. But I think she would have had a good life with him if the family could have welcomed his new role. After Townsend, Margret could never be happy and so she became a wild card with no direction.
@phoenixarmijo7553 That's possible but by no means guaranteed. I do agree though that the pressure on Margaret was immense and she can't have really done worse than Tony A-J
Yes, Princess Margaret’s “love” with Peter W. Townsend was apparently merely an infatuation akin to a schoolgirl crush.
She wrote a letter to the PM R. Anthony Eden from Balmoral less than a week before her 25th birthday: “I am writing to tell you, as far as I can of any personal plans during the next few months ... During the last of August and all September I shall be here at Balmoral, and I have no doubt that during this time - especially on my birthday on August 21st - the press will encourage every sort of speculation about the possibility of my marrying Group Captain Peter Townsend.
I am not going to see him during this time but in October I shall be returning to London, and he will then be taking his annual leave - I do certainly hope to see him while he is there...
But it is only by seeing him in this way that I feel I can properly decide whether I can marry him or not.
At the end of October or early November I very much hope to be in a position to tell you and the other Commonwealth Prime Ministers what I intend to do.
The Queen of course knows I am writing to you about this, but of course no one else does, and as everything is so uncertain I know you will regard it certainly as a confidence.” [Ends]
“This letter rewrites history, because here you’ve got a very determined and confident young woman in control of the situation, telling the Prime Minister that she has not decided and is wavering, which is at odds with what the public was led to believe and certainly with what she told me.
The perception was that she gave up the love of her life for duty and protocol, but this letter sets a question mark over that. It shows that the love, conceivably, was not as strong as it was to begin with. It’s likely she didn’t want anyone other than Eden to know she’d had doubts, because it had gone so far.”

It is nonsense to think that it was not thought that Prncess Elisabeth would one day be Sovereign. Her Uncle, the then Prince of Wales showed absolutely no sign whatsoever of ever marrying or having children. His wife, the Duchess of Windsor, often stated, "My David is not heir conditioned." He had been urged to marry all throughout the 1920s and never did. He preferred married women to ever marrying himself. He preferred Mrs Dudley-Ward and Thelma, Lady Furness and later Wallis Simpson to any single eligible woman. It is said a severe cases of mumps that rendered him sterile. He was born in 1894 and became King in 1936. He showed no sign of marrying and haviung children. Queen Elizabeth II was 10 when her Uncle became King. There were to be no children from the Duke of Windsor. The late Queen Mother would also have no further children due to both her daughters being born via ceasarean section. That is why there was never any doubt that Princess Elizabeth would not be Queen.
Why are we made to feel sorry for these elite people who have pampered lives and no clue of what it's like to truly struggle?

Always wondered when I’ve heard over many years the complaints by Margaret that she didn’t get the education her sister got, why once she was older she didn’t get tutors and take courses to upgrade, she certainly had the time, never had a job of any kind. It leads you to think she maybe didn’t want to because she wasn’t very smart, just liked to complain. What an unhappy person she seems to have been, a horrendous snob, rude and cruel is what I’ve heard.
@hazelpearson7807, unlike you Princess Margaret was a very beautiful, smart woman, patron of hundreds of charities, mother of two children who unlike you are very well brought up by their mother, and leading worthwhile lives, she was also a great support and confidant of her sister Elizabeth II. As patron of many charities she didn’t have time to ‘upgrade’ or go to night school etc. You are the stupido, who finds it necessary to diss a long dead woman you did not know, was not your equal because of what ‘you heard’ from the gutter press. Crawl back into your sewer and 🤐.🇬🇧🇬🇧
She did not need the education in Constitutional matters and later spent most of her time partying on Mustique.
@@misscoutts6193 exactly, so why did she complain about not being educated like her sister....just something to bitch about which she did repeatedly.

History does repeat itself, Ex: Her uncle abdicated and now Harry needs too
Harry has nothing from which to abdicate.
Abolishment of the monarchy is what is needed. Can you imagine George Washington's family due to lineage running the usa
Harry is 6th in line.... he has to outlive charles, William, and Williams 3 children... it's highly unlikely Harry will ever sit on the throne. I'm sure his family at this rate will force him to give up his titles as he is constantly blasting them.
I do think Margaret got to have more fun with her life than her sister the Queen or Queen Mother. I can't imagine how hard it would have been for me to remain stoic in public when I lost my parents or 4 of my siblings. Being Queen is not a job most of us could handle. When they were young & would squabble like any other siblings, I think too many forget how much younger Margaret was than her sister. My baby sister was spoiled rotten & a pita but I loved her dearly.
Wow! Margaret and Harry have such similarities
Prince Harry was able to marry the love of his life! and is now living his best life with his beloved wife and children. Away form those toxic, dysfunctional so-called royals. God blessed him and his real family always in California U S A.
Sad and selfish , ?. You are correct ,neither were/are ,made of the stuff where they couldve carved a really decent niche for themselves ,like Princess Anne for instance .She hated the press ,was rude and out-spoken and "up herself" She didnt whine though ,she got on with it ,and she done it with-thought all the sugary sweet shit and did it her own way .
Margaret was always loyal to her sister and the crown. Even Elizabeth admitted that Margaret sacrificed too much.... On the contrary Harry not only abandoned his family , he speaks very badly about them and he humilates them. This is a great difference.
Except being loyal to the monarchy… Harry just wants it his way - or else he’ll put the knife in your back…. Margaret may not have been gods best child herself, but she never lost her loyalty to the monarchy
No, Margaret didn’t publicly stab her family in the back.

I believe Margret rose was a little biter and it was Elizabeth that had the good left hook.
Princess Margaret got more beautiful with age on her. She really did.
Always been an admirer of the Queen, to the extent that we know her or the Institution she was head of. On the other hand, I have never really cared for Margaret. I believe her to have been very narcissistic and needy of attention, adoration and status. I believe her to be less enigmatic, but more calculating, knowing her best shot was to stay near the Queen inspite of her own intense envy. I do sincerely hope that Margaret came to have a real faith in GOD and is in peace and contentment.

They both had many affairs. Both were highly sexed, whatever that is! She was no angel and this man here is gilding his lily. Roddy Llewellyn, in his words, left finally because of her insatiable demands. There are more honest biographies on Utube. We also knew of her seeing Tony long before the marriage and his concurrent relationship with Jacqui Chan, I believe her name was. Margaret was ever royal, even friends often seen, had to bow and curtsy. She was also dating again shortly after Peter Townsend was lucky enough to escape into a happy and normal marriage. We're only recently aware of her true personality. Her drinking, smoking were what killed her. When married and the rot set in they used to leave horrible messages for each other at home. She probably had a brief affair with Mick Jagger as he had a place in Mustique and it has been recorded she did. Warren Beatty too and other good looking men her friends would send her way. She was no criminal but neither was she the angel this film depicted.
