Italian Wolf attacks Fox!

- 🇬🇧 During our last wildlife tour in Abruzzo National Park (Central Italy) we had the chance to observe one of the most interesting scene of our whole life!
A Wolf (Canis lupus italicus), after an ambush of few minutes, attacks a Fox (Vulpes vulpes). The attack is not successful and after few seconds watching each others the Wolf leaves the ground followed for few seconds by the lucky fox.
Observing such a thrilling scene left the speech all the participants of our group!
The last months have been for us really amazing when it comes to the observation of European Carnivores: Iberian Lynx in Andalusia, Wildcat in Greece and Wolf in Italy!

🇮🇹 Lupo appenninico (Canis lupus italicus) attacca Volpe (Vulpes vulpes).
Durante il nostro ultimo wildlife tour in Abruzzo abbiamo assistito ad una delle scene più interessanti della nostra vita!
Mentre eravamo impegnati in un appostamento per l'osservazione del Lupo appenninico, notiamo subito una coppia di volpi intente a cacciare. Dopo alcuni secondi ci rendiamo conto che una delle due volpi, ignara, è osservata con interesse da un esemplare di Lupo. Questo, dopo alcuni minuti di appostamento, sferra il suo attacco che, per sua sfortuna (ma per fortuna della Volpe), non va a buon fine.
Assistere dal vivo ad un'interazione del genere, tra due specie così belle, ha lasciato tutto il gruppo - compreso chi osserva animali selvatici da decenni - senza fiato.
Gli ultimi mesi sono stati molto positivi per noi per ciò che riguarda l'avvistamento di Carnivori europei: Lince pardina in Andalusia, Gatto selvatico in Grecia e Lupo in Italia!

The fox realized it a bit later (than the wolf expected hence no time to go backward) as it was chilling.

Wolf had terrible anticipation. He didn't think the Fox would have the balls to take the chase to the open field

It seems to me for whatever reason, the wolf did not commit to the attack.
Probably cause it’s pack left it alone and seems too young to have any experience
The wolf was so sure the fox would have run towards the bushes that anticipated the move, but the fox chose the open instead.

Great footage! Fun fact about red foxes is that their eyesight is based on movement, so unless it's right out in the open then they can't see something that's staying very still or moving slowly like this wolf is doing. As long as they don't smell/hear you it's possible to sneak up very close to foxes without them knowing you're there (I've done it many times)

There are big wolves populations in hole Italy mountains (Alps and Apennines)
Their number is increasing and since months big problems are there for farmers.

@@knaturewildlife1817 The fox faked going left, then went to its right. The wolf didn't really hesitate, it was already running downhill so it had to stop, change direction and now go uphill.
