Really interesting to see all the subtle differences guides teach on this kind of stuff. No right or wrong answers only unsafe ways to do it and its about understanding what makes it unsafe!. Great video as always Jens and looking forward to seeing you soon!
As someone who's just starting to dive into more technical ski mountaineering adventures, this video was insanely helpful and informational!! You guys are crushing it, keep it up!
It wasn´t from me I got that from a legendary mountain guide living down in New Zeeland during an avalanche course I did there. The part got cut when I creddit him.
@@StompItTutorials Thanks for clarifying! And the proof was in the pudding: you remembered it easily. Good shit. Just a mnemonic way to do this particular "pilot's checklist" before dropping - momentary clarity about what's most important to be focusing on, as you envision your drop in.
Love the honest commentary! It’s fine to have a beginner mindset when you are learning a new skill that’s completely different to what’s in your skill set, but when it’s just a little sideways step from something, you’re good at, it’s hard to stomach, the embarrassment and feelings of ineptitude. Good on you for putting yourself out there and being so open about it!
This is The best video on the subject on UA-cam in my opinion. I have watched it a least 10 times! You should hire this Mountain guide (Daniel Perret) for another video. Dave Searle is good, but this is way better!
We are Incredibly lucky to access this type of expertise for free. This rappel with backup its pretty good protocol but the wood trick was 🔥 the whole point of snow picket is hacked away with a piece of wood! You could backup with a ice axe or even with a bucket belay. Im going for my second season of skiing, looking forward to this channel!
Great video! It really shows the complexity of ski touring in challenging terrain, and how much experience you need for taking the right decisions when you are out there.
This is a great coincidence... I wento to Engelberg a few years ago just for freeriding, I did some research and discarded the Galtiberg route due to lack of expertise on using ropes and discouraged by the locals I asked for info at the Ski Lodge. I have done a lot of reseach, bought equipment, still have to practice a bit more... I was planning to go with my son this winter and wached every single video on that descent, got gps tracks, the works, but this video never showed up because the name of the run is not mentioned... I found it accidentally by watching ski mountaneering videos... There is an easier aceess route to the right side of the descent that only needs a rope for safety while doing a small traverse but not for rappeling but I am not sure if that´s always the case... Believe me I would happily hire a guide if I could afford it but I can´t so any indications on that descent are much apprecciated! Excellent and really well explained. I subscribed long ago but somehow this video got under my radar, boy I am glad I found it! Thanks!!
What happens to the rope that is connected to the snow board anchor? I understand needing to leave the board but do you have to leave rope behind on the mountain, too?
Nice to see some of these videos again! Was pretty heavy into them when I was learning to ski in 18/19(thanks for the help) and then THAT hit and these vids kind of fell off my recommendations.
Glad to see you’re making dreams come true! I could see maybe attaching a rated ring onto the cordelette that is being used on the wooden plank. This would help to eliminate rope on rope friction when pulling down the rappel rope after descent. Love this series. Keep going. Be safe out there.
No you don't understand, it a minimal rappel anchor you left behind. 1: A rated ring cost a small fortune, maillon rapide would be even worse to retrieve an icy rope. 2: the friction only wears down the cordelette fixed point, which you will left behind, not the rope. 3, it's icy anyways, even if it cuts down it's trash that was left behind and hopefully cleaned after the season.
some feedback: 1) ALWAYS use the stop knot. not only if you think it might be too short 2) put something like a figure 8 on both ends and not just a tiny knot that can slip through your belay device. With the method shown in the video, if you have uneven ends going down you risk falling still. Apart from, that, great video!
@@StompItTutorials great! in the first part of the movie only a small overhand on one of the lines was shown, wanted to clarify on that for others that it's better to always go safe and all the way. it is one of the more common causes of accidents still sadly
the rock anchor at the top is already made of the bolt and a metal ring attached to it (sometimes it could be a metal chain connected to two bolts). You put a rope through that ring and don't leave a carabiner at the top. Also, it is a good safety practice to carry so called "quicklink" - they cost ~3bucks, but you can always leave them on top in case a bolt does not have a ring (i.e leave your own "ring").
I will ask some time :) I met his filmer at a trad-climbing crag in northern sweden last summer and told him to say hello to him atleast and now I assume we are BFF´s.
When I came down still on the rope I tried a little bit on Daniels instructions. That did not work to well. I assume we did it this way beacuse he thought the consequences were not too bad.

I can recommend the Safety Lab series from Ortovox on UA-cam, helped me a lot with ski mountaineering stuff. Nevertheless really nice video
Glad to hear it. But really go and learn this with professionals.
I love that line you ad-libbed - REALLY works!!

Glad you think so!
wow, I did not expect to see Dani in Jens video :-) it is a small world after all!!
Sure is!
Loving the new series!
I'm at the same stage of getting more into ski mountaineering, so this series is extremely helpful!
Pleased to hear it :)

That was a great day out - and a proper class session/experience.❤
Thank you.
This entire series is sick!! Glad you got some good snow as well 👍🏻.
I also did my first abseiling with Danni in Engelberg. Good times

Thanks for that :) Yes I why that could be good idea. But I think this is how the experienced guides etc do it mostly.

Loved this vid, so well filmed!

Great content. Not a generic or fluff tutorial.

Good jobs guys ✌️

Very good video. Always remember though: 2 Cuts. 1 not enough.
How did you recover the rope from thr piece of wood? It didn't looked like you could slide it

a question when you rapel down how do you take all the carabiners that you you to connect the rope with the rocks
the rock anchor at the top is already made of the bolt and a metal ring attached to it (sometimes it could be a metal chain connected to two bolts). @@SviatoslavRimdenok if you do that make sure they are stainless.. otherwise it becomes a danger for climbers after you and is a pain to remove

Is that a static or dynamic rope?

I will ask some time :) I met his filmer at a trad-climbing crag in northern sweden last summer and told him to say hello to him atleast and now I assume we are BFF´s.
Wait, how did the guide come down the ice chute after he removed the snow anchor? Without rope?
How old do you have to be to sign up to a freestyle camp with your team?
how is it that you're on the 2024 Bents? :)
Why did you try to cut avalanche unhooked when you could do it hooked?
