Walimbe Hela Aka Friars Hood
#Walimbe Hela is also known as Friar's Hood, which lies in the Nuwaragala Hana forest reserve in the Ampara district in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka. The summit elevation of the Walimbe Hela is 658 m (2,159 ft).
"Walimbe" means "the highest place" in the indigenous language of this country. This rock has been called Valimbe Hela by the aborigines since ancient times as it is a very high hill compared to other hills around the Nuwaragalatenna reserve. The English name Friar's Hood was coined in the British era.
Route to Walimbe Hela
There are currently two main routes used to access the foothills, one of which is to enter the Nuwaragalatenna Reserve from the Mangalagama area on the way from the Maha Oya to Ampara and travel about 10 km to the foothills of the Valimbe Hela. It is important to note that this road is a very difficult road with boulders and the only vehicle that can be used to travel ten kilometers on foot or as far as possible at the foot of the Valimbe Hela is the tractor.
The other route to the foothills of the Walimbe Hela is to turn right at the Gonagolla Junction on the way from Mahaoya to Ampara and proceed to Bandaraduwa to enter the Nuwaragalatenna Reserve via Bandaraduwa. The villagers said it was a bit awkward or the ability to ride a motorcycle.
