Fluff, as someone who’s watched you for a long time (since I started playing guitar at 14, currently 22), it brought a huge smile to my face hearing you talk about how well you’re doing mentally. Your videos have been a mainstay in my life for a long time now, so it’s always good to see you doing well. 🎉
So glad to hear you are healing!!! Yay!!!
I never click on anything faster than Fluff’s FAQ Fridays. Been a subscriber from nearly the beginning. Kudos to your good health dude!
I can see 350 FAQS and questions videos burning you out! Glad to see you back at them 🤘
The moment a Sterling Tealy Dan Fluff Signature gets released, is the moment I'm adding it to cart.
And if it doesn't come with your fishman pickups that's fine. I'll just put a Fluff Beard Comber in it.
17:40 YES, I agree 100% and it's irritating that neck thickness isn't always listed
A little sad that you left Dragged Under, because to me YOU were the face. However, I'm glad you are living your best. I'm a long time viewer, not often commenter, and seeing you feel more.... free... to do what you want makes me as a supporter very happy. And I 100% understand that tour life and living. I'm a photographer, and have toured most of the US in 15 passaenger vans, hauling two axle trailers, with 3-5 sweaty other people. It's tough, and even at 27 myself, I know it's something I wont do forever. Gross food, tons of naps, shitty beds. Sometimes shitty venues (which makes MY job a lot harder). Currently the reward is worth the cons, but I do see that balance shifting in the next 4-5 years.
Enjoyed the video, glad you're on the mend!
I'm so stoked for Beard Chat!
What the FAQ!
So glad to see a FAQ Monday again!
Love your take on Atmos. It’s a way to keep the home studio musicians down. A proper Atmos rig to the average home studio musician is expensive to install properly.
I loved how the entire thing felt more honest and direct. I don’t know if it was for the questions themselves or for Ryan state of mind but It felt really like listening to a friend more than a UA-cam music influencer (or whatever).
If this will be the way you conduct your podcast I’m in for a treat ❤
I'd have to go with my Ibanez Jem 77V-BFP a MXR noise gate (if I can use a pedal) and my EVH 5150 50w head with a matching cab
Dude, 100% with you on the Atmos takes. As a producer/mix engineer, it’s been weird navigating that stuff with clients over the past year and the gatekeeping things have become more obvious.
You nailed it with that guitar shape thing. I somehow got a flying V which I never thought would be "my shape", but after getting one I've never turned back. Also lost all pain/issues related to bad posture as it was just the most comfy guitar for me playing sitting down or standing up (also very light).
FIRST QUESTION! Glad to see this series is back. Thanks Fluff! I'm excited to see you this week at NAMM! I'm glad to hear surgery went well and you are feeling much better
What is your preferred rectification & power mode on a Mesa Rectifier? Do you ever experiment with the different combinations (tube/spongy, etc)?
ALRIGHT!!! Fluff answered my question! So glad to hear you’re doing better. 🤘🏼👽
Glad that you're starting to feel better. It's really hard to make UA-cam videos and be "up" when you feel like crap or in pain, and you did a great job.
WHAT UP FLUFF! sweet answer, certainly gonna get the Gojira archtype now. glad to hear your well!
Love the opinions. It something we don’t get much anymore because everyone is so scared. Keep it up
Been looking forward to this faq for a really long time. 👍👍👍
No "f1rSt Qu3StiON!" ? 😮
It’s like Fluff committed heresy against himself.
Your PRS Custom 22 might be the most beautiful guitar I‘ve ever seen.
Its a stunner. Its the matte finish.
If I were to pick a plug in to record an album for me it'd be the new Plini X. Wide range of tones from spacey cleans to high gain but also the transpose knob to change tunings on the flight would make it easier as well I'd think. And if you do a Sterling version of your sig, I'm going to go broke figuring out how to get one period. Especially if it has the fishman's in it "drools". And as far as guitar ergonomics. One thing I've learned is with my size, carve tops are generally uncomfortable, they hit my forearm in just not a comfortable way. So I need a guitar with either a nice forearm contour or something like your Stingray where it has rounded edges. I find stingrays and the Cutlass very comfortable in that regard. And I prefer somewhat thicker necks. Just due to hand fatigue with thinner necks. I don't have flexible hands.
Also on a serious note. Very glad you are doing better post surgery and hope that this year health wise will be much better for you.
Hello Fluff, I watch quite often but didn't know you were sick, glad your feeling better...Thank for all your videos and effort...
Glad you are on the mend Mang! :)
I recently got an Sonos Arc, two Era300's and two Subs.....if it's mixed well I really really enjoy Atmos audio. The ERA300s in Stereo are amazing
Does the system have surround emulation software that makes things like stereo music sound great in surround even if they aren't mixed in surround?
Ultimate Beard Guy-John Cooper!!!
You're 1000% right on the Dolby Atmos bit. The first exposure the VAST majority of folks will have for ownership will be their cars as some auto manufacturers are posing putting Atmos support. BUT to Fluff's point, the music thats not mixed specific for Atmost will just be mixed down to stereo anyways, and I'm pretty sure that my 90s alternative is not gonna get remixed to Atmos.
Any functional requirements that Apple/Spotify/Tidal etc puts on mandatory Atmos for platform residency is just going to push content creators to other platforms. The big studios will buy into the platform/format and some of the bigger smalls shops like Colt Capperrune will have some work but the other smaller home shops will have to either partner with the bigger shops for the whole process or there will be a rift in where you go for certain platforms. It won't be an even playing field.
My Samsung soundbar with subwoofer and wireless rear speakers supports Atmos. On movies, sometimes there are sounds so real I have to pause the movie to make sure it isn't real. I don't understand how the soundbar projects sound onto the ceiling or walls, and it's kind of spooky. My guess is, that's the way most people will ever experience Atmos. It has some sort of emulation that makes stereo music sound 3D.
I love my Evertune Bridge....best guitar invention in the past 20 years
Same here.. I recently bought a balaguer diablo evertune.. fkn love it.. I've literally tuned it twice in 3 months
Nice to see you back & your healing up well Ryan !! :)
I would choose a PRS studio for the 1 guitar. That thing is a beauty and can do so much! As far as getting to try enough guitars to see what you like im SOL as a lefty. Every music store since the dawn of time has a secret contract with 1 another to only ever have the same 3 shitty guitars, bottom barrel epi lespaul for under 300, a black squire with rusty strings, and maybe another strat.
Glad you're recovering well from surgery :)
Glad to have you back on a more regular basis dude, happy you’re doing well too
I massively agree with the point on guitar ergonomics, for the longest time I wanted a Gibson Les Paul, for ages, and when I could I bought one online without playing one in person. When it arrived I Haaaaaated it, the hard edges, the way the body wanted to slide backwards off my knee, I couldn’t trade it away quick enough. Love my PRS CE soooo much more, which I went out of my way to try in a store first expecting to be disappointed, I was not. 😸👍
How are you doing things 2 weeks after the surgery??? It took me a month before I did anything but lay down after my gallbladder was taken out.
Looking forward to the podcast!
Glad to see you’re doing better! How do we get info on those Aqua Sparkle restocks that were left over?
Glad you are back in the saddle
Hell yeah, I loved FAQ Monday. Gave me something fun to watch on a day that most people agree sucks!
@18:07 I'm glad your headspace is a lot better. I'm sure you're lady loves having you around more often, as well
FAQ Mondays are always welcome! Yes!
I feel like Fishman pickups have become the cool new thing to a point where it seems trendy. From what I’ve heard they’re too bright. I also don’t really like push pull knobs
way too mid focused
How bout them 1000 dollar seymour duncan pickups? We need a demo!
For 1 album I'd honestly use my EC1000 w/ pegasus/sentient and then probably something like STL Amphub just for the variety of amps, pedals, and IR's.
This is back!
FAQ: hey Fluff, given you have connections and insight in the amp building world, why do you think nano tubes have not become a thing renowned amp manufacturers have delved into more or invest more research and development.
Glad to hear that you're doing well! I enjoyed your video. Developments and changes are always exciting. I hope everything turns out well for you.
There are so many wonderful guitars all around the world... build by luthiers and small companies which are not known...because they don't have the possibility to present their stuff on a big marketing platform. I wish someone could give them a platform to present their stuff. Darrel Brown on UA-cam is making some videos about smaller brands and this is very interesting. I will order a blue morpho 7 string from Wreck Guitars in Croatia...
On the Guitar Summit in Mannheim last year I have seen a lot of good guitars from France....
Is there a UA-cam channel that is going more into details of the small brands? I have seen in a list that Germany only has over 130 luthiers...in the USA over 3000?!
Has someone experience with Sundolf Guitars, the 7 string Harpoon? 🤘
I watch every video u make rock in
Woohoo to import Fluff signatures
Dolby Atmos - kinda fun to mix - it's not scary.
Anybody else still wanting Riffs & Beards podcast to come back?
Took me a good 3 months to get back to normal after they took my gb out. Stay away from the hot wings for awhile :)
An import version of your guitar would be sick, and since they’re the same body, I want a Kensrue model that wouldn’t break my wallet.
Billy Gibbons uses a rack EQ to EQ all his guitars to Pearly Gates that way all his guitars sound the same when he plays them live. Yeah in the studio you’d want diversity on the road consistency. The fact that Metallica has been using Kempers and Megadeth is using Quad Cortex speaks to how good the digital stuff is now. Megadeth uses them to approximate the different album tones throughout the years. There’s something romantic about dragging an old Marshall all over the world and never knowing what it’s going to sound like in a specific venue, it’s just not practical with the cost of touring when you can have a few guitars in a multi case and basically a fly rig in a carryon sized bag and plug into the venues PA and all your patches for songs already set. It’s up to the sound guy to adjust the mix to the venue. I’m old school so I want to see a wall of stacks, but it’s not practical and I guess I was a mark for ever thinking all those speakers were actually functional in the first place, but it’s like Santa Clause you never forget the magic and the beauty of ignorance when I would flip through guitar magazines and drool over my heroes wall of stacks behind him. Things have sure changed a lot since I started playing. Back when I started you actually probably needed (to play metal) 50 watts and at least a 2x12 cab, especially if you were playing with a drummer as loud as the one I played with.
Sign me up for that podcast!!!
Hey Fluff what are your thoughts on the new sunn amps revival? any plans to review any of the amps to be released? BTW I haven't seen the ohmacht in a while and it's such a great amp!
I like the idea of Atmos, but I can't see it taking off for music at all.
Atmos mixes in stereo sound weird most of the time (especially for rock/metal). I can't ever put my finger on why, but it's more than just the level being lower; there's an odd "hallow-ness" to those mixes most of the time. Also, consumers need in-ceiling speakers in addition to surround sound to take full advantage of it, and a production studio also needs 11 studio monitors plus Atmos processing to effectively mix it. I vaguely remember 5.1 surround music failing in the mid 00's too, because almost no one cares about listing to music on dedicated surround setups. Not that I have any industry experience, but if I had to guess, being gatekept by streaming services is going to lead to a lot of quick Atmos mixes being produced just to say in front of the algorithm and on playlists.
Atmos really shines for special effects. Hearing stuff in movies like helicopters overhead is next-level, but to me music is just a different use-case that doesn't really benefit from it.
Following up on bringing outside producers in for songwriting, is that something you’ve considered offering as a service for bands/solo artists to do with you?
I lost my gallbladder back in 1984
Mr Fluff! Just wanted to tweak a couple of things mentioned for Atmos:
1 - Atmos is agnostic when it comes to the playback system. You don’t need special hardware (ie 714 room, Apple AirPods, etc) you can use any pair of headphones for the binaural (which is being improved upon constantly) or even your left/right speakers since it will just use the stereo fold down.
2 - While mixers are still figuring out how best to use Atmos, I’d be curious what rock records are separating the kit and panning it around but totally agree, big modern rock is definitely not benefiting from this format.
3 - I’d argue that Quadrophonic failed because it was not convenient. The whole point of Atmos is the convenience. Everyone has the capability right in their pockets.
4 - Studios love the idea of Atmos because of the deliverables aspect of it. You can submit an Atmos mix and pull any mix format from it later down the line. Nothing needs to get remixed and the algorithms are getting updated to help with this process all the time. So something that unfortunately sounded weird when Atmos was first released, will sound better in time (which I’d agree that the stereo format wins here in the immediate future).
5 - The loudness spec that the renderer wants to hear is -18 LKFS so it definitely is much quieter than your standard stereo mix volume but I’ve found that if you turn on the normalize feature (which I agree is a bit annoying at the moment) the differences between the Atmos and Stereo mixes should be quite similar to where the output isn’t so low.
I actually didn’t realize you left Dragged Under and that makes me a little sad
Did you sell you JP2C?
With how expensive everything is nowadays, especially related to touring (fuel, merch cuts, etc...), what do you see bands soing or should be doing in the near future to generate extra revenue?
Get Glenn on your podcast. You two are quite different as people. Might make for interesting discourse.
(High pitched voice) FIRST QUESTION!
I plead ignorance. What hoodie is that?
Shaved sides/ponytail guy checking in
Single guitar would definitely be a core model Custom 24; single amp, definitely Helix Native (so long as I can use my own IRs). I’m a Fractal user that came from the Helix Rack, and still love using Helix Native in the DAW for ease of use and versatility. I think Native is slept on as a great recording tool. Gojira is absolutely rock solid as well. Love that plugin.
Hot take on Atmos, coming from someone that loves Atmos; it has no place in music. Even in a live show environment, the band is right in front of you. All respect to Atmos engineers, but for music it is erroneous and frankly adds absolutely nothing to the mix (pun intended).
OG Peavey Firenza with P90’s and a Spark. All you need…lol
My wife had surgery last month and for some reason the hospital had in her records that her gallbladder was removed even though it isn't lol
Dolby atmos can make your room sound bigger, sounds can be more realistic, in placement, delay, reverb etc. As for film and music. But do we need really it ? Is it the way we listen to music. I don’t think so. Better thing to do, is put that money on good recordings. No MP3 listening, good pair of stereo speakers or headphone. And that’s it.
average listeners don't care about audio quality. Most ppl listen on cell phone speakers. We went from HIFI -> PC tin can speaker -> cell phone speakers
20:25 idk dude maybe use an adjective or two ;)
Will you ever make and release your own music again?
Uhhhh.... dude.... why no more "first question!!!!" ??? That was a calling card. Ha
How good do you have to be at playing guitar, to know if you like a set of pickups? You make it sound like playing with just whatever pickups, should be "good enough" for the average guitar goon. They can't possibly know the difference? Can they? Only a pro can know. Odd view, coming from someone with signature guitars and pickups. Who do you want to buy your stuff?
Regarding Atmos - Thank you - Overrated for rock n roll -
I don’t have an Atmos system but it seems hard to justify for most of my music. For a rock trio, drums need to be in the middle, same with vocals, and bass is kind of everywhere. There’s not really that much stereo involved to be honest.
Hey Fluff, do you think you could do a Beard Chat with Fletcher Dragge from Pennywise 🙏😯?
Pretty sure it's pronounced, "DOBLY."
The band stuff sounds like a cover up. lol. Three members all quit at the same time
Just watch That Thing You Do. That explains it.
@@RiffsAndBeards haha, that’s hilarious but also what I figured. lol.
