Dollar Tree Organization of Home Preps by TheUrbanPrepper

- In early 2013, I posted a video titled “Home Prepping System”, which outlined my organization strategy and design for all of the prepping items within my home. Over time, things began to stall out with this project due to the mammoth size of it and the lack of a refined organization system. I was recently inspired by UA-camr and “Home Organization Queen”, DoItOnADime, who has a channel focused on budget friendly and clever home organization tips. I decided to leverage many of her organization ideas with a few of mine, namely color coordinating modules based on my “Color of Prepping” video, to help rejuvenate my Home Prepping System project. This video shows the before and after of a few areas of our home, in addition to a trip to the Dollar Tree to pick up some inexpensive supplies.

Yes! :) Hey guys, do it on a dime here! lolol!! Thanks for the shoutout, and what awesome organization! AWESOME pantry, and I love all your color coding. Home-run with this one!
DoItOnaDime Yay! Thanks for dropping by. Your passion for home organization is truly inspiring. Thanks for everything that you do! ~Cliff
My two most favourite UA-camrs commenting on my two favourite topics. I feel special.
Twinkle eyes I agree!
Two amazing channels love you both ! Both channels have helped me immensely
The combined forces of dollar tree organizer moms and preppers is perhaps the greatest force the world will ever see. I laughed at the genius initially and then stopped laughing BECAUSE of the genius.
Stumbled on this as I was listening to your videos while at work. I was floored about the timing of this video. I was thinking about my own personal organization. This video made me grow grey brain cells. Organizing is prepping and prepping is organizing. Thanks!!! You should do a follow up or refresher/fine tune of this video.
Kid prepper killed the Vader impression. Lol.
ryunin69 Haha... I agree. Needles to say, he is very excited about the new Star Wars movie. Not sure if it will be kid appropriate though.
+TheUrbanPrepper love the star wars :)
Lol!! Finally! Prepper world meets organization world! Love it! I'm a lady who has been on an organization/prep kick for a while and the 2 worlds are so like ships passing in the night. I was beginning to think there was no one with my shared interest.
I LOVE that clever lazy susan idea! Thanks for all the great tips Cliff!
I need you to come and redo my basement, you could make a business out of this lol. I recently tried to organize my preps like this, did the whole dollar store thing, it went OK but I have still a lot of work to do. Organization is such an underestimated aspect of prepping, Knowing your gear is one thing, knowing where the hell it is is another! I've implimented COP i.e. Colors of Prepping for that! Great video Cliff!
Canadian Prepper I totally agree. I have a lot of cool gear, and most of it is right where I expect it to be. But once I start letting my organization slip, things start to go downhill fast. It's definitely a lifestyle adjustment. Let me know when I can drop by to check out your basement. My fee is one 6-pack of Canadian Beer. :)
TheUrbanPrepper
Deal!
Good to see three of my fave channels communicating here.
There are soooooo many different prepper channels, BUT I decided to subscribe to yours For The fact that you have kids as a single mom with a toddler on a fixed income, Having a family prepper to Take my inspiration from is a huge deal!! As somebody who's literally just deciding she's gonna do a home prepper thing (I guess that's what it's called) Your channel is very organized and it has great start up videos thank you very much!!!
All this organization is so satisfying
DoItOnADime is a great channel. She is an awesome lady and will definitely help you get organized. Have a blessed day.
TheLadySurvivor I agree. She brightens my mood as soon as I start one of her videos. She seems so happy and excited. Very inspiring!
I loved some of DoItOnADime's ideas. Her budget and shopping ideas have a lot of relevance in the prepping community as well.
I'm a dollar tree bachelor! Haha. I'm obsessed with that place now. And DoItOnaDime was my main inspiration too! She is fantastic. I don't drive, so I took my massive old lady shopping trolley to the nearest Dollar Tree (I was stoked that we have 'em in Canada too!), and piled a crap tonne of storage containers and things into it. It gave the ladies at the store a good laugh as I went through the checkout.. we had to play shopping cart Tetris to fit everything back in there. LOL. Super cheap & high quality stuff that works great though. Previously I was buying expensive name brand containers and shelled out hundreds of dollars on them, only to have them not work for the spaces I needed them for. Go figure that the dollar store stuff worked better.
I tell you those green bins are irresistible
Finally got time to watch this...excellent! And Kid Prepper's Darth Vader impression...spot on! He is so funny! Great Job!
Barry Hollmer Thanks for watching! KP is hilarious. I think it is so cool that he has built up such a great sense of humor. I feel proud. :)
I need to get better at organization, lol. I do love the Dollar Tree for organization and other home items, even first aid items. Great tips!
Armed Rogue Thanks! I really like all of the organization supplies they have. For all these years, I've just walked by that section. Now that is my go to section.
My favorite youtubers talking with each other
Greatings from Poland prepers
Oh, my Dollar Tree. I love my Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree home of the everything awesome if you shop wisely. **settles in to watch more**
Baranduyn NoIdea Haha... I am liking my new way of looking at the Dollar Tree. It really is a gold mind of handy supplies to help organize your home and preps.
I love that idea to use marbles to make a homemade lazy susan! Genius!
Thanks again, I download your pdf for edc bag organization, few years ago, and our way to see colors now is in a nice orden of items! thank you brother! My best regards from Chile (south america) :)
"Do it on a dime" is so catchy. You should have a contest for people to come up with the best tag line for you, and the winner can choose the next challenge you take on. If I were to win, I would have you eat Mayday emergency rations for a month.
Pendejo That's a really cool idea! I'll look into it. Although, I am worried what challenge someone would want me to do.
you are right, she's awesome.liked your ideas too
haha! Your kid is so adorable. Great video by the way, time for me to revisit my cabinets. Thanks for the great ideas!
Great video. Best thing about youtube is the pooled knowledge available. So many great channels out there!
Great idea getting tips from stay at home mom and dad channels.
Thanks again .
I love it! Your little "Darth" is such a cutie! The cheap "lazy susan" is fantastic (whoever came up with that is just genius!)! Thanks for sharing! It looks so much better! I am in the middle of trying to get my home preps organized and it is such a challenge in this tiny farmhouse. I wish we lived closer to a Dollar Tree. The closest is almost an hr. and a half away. I wish they had an online store. I would be keeping them bought out! lol! Thanks for sharing and for all of the work you put into your channel! I don't think anyone who doesn't have a You Tube channel has any idea how much prep time you must put into it. Thanks again and God Bless! I love DoItOnaDime too!
+The Oily Prepper Wow! That is a long drive away to a Dollar Tree. I'm glad you enjoyed this video! Yes, creating videos really does sync up a lot of time. It's always nice to hear compliments from other content providers who understand all of the behind the scenes work involved in each video.
Well I am most definitely an amateur compared to you. I am so thankful for everyone who puts in such hard work creating content for everyone to learn skills we need! It's such a blessing!
What a cute little Vader!
I'm cracking up right now! I have been subscribed to both your channels for a while, but never thought I'd see them collide! I know you two would be good friends if you were neighbors - great channels, helpful information, and cute kid cameos :)
I love absolutely everything about this
LOVE this! So cool how you incorporated your color system w/$ tree organizers...plus, those chalkboard labels are a great touch too! I'm totally going to do that lazy susan trick, tyvm for sharing-Lisa
livinright Thanks a bunch, Lisa! I too love those inexpensive DIY Lazy Susan's. The chalkboard labels look so nice and make everything consistent.
Love her. She's got THE best disposition....and her ideas are pure and simple. Loved the way you used her $ Tree ideas. Wondering if you'd do an update since this is a couple years old. Would really appreciate seeing more youtube prepper storage videos. Update?? Thanks!
I have another one coming out for storage units, but it's not as closely tied to DoItOnADime. She's fantastic.
Two of my favorite you tubers in one video....love it!
Nancy Chaffin Nice! Thank you so much, Nancy. :)
You have an awesome dollar tree! It's awesome to have a dad do a dollar tree haul!
I love your videos UrbanPrepper and I also love how you got your inspiration, some of the best prepping work I’ve seen on UA-cam in my opinion
A tip; if you are storing something that will suffer from humidity like matches I save the silica packets from vitamins and OTC meds in an empty vitamin bottle then I throw them in my matches bin (like the Sterlite shoebox which has a snap on cover). It helps keep them from suffering from humidity, though I still think it's the strike strip that gets damaged.
Baranduyn NoIdea Great tip! I've had most of my matches for several years and have not run into issues yet. However, they are stored in a dry place. Perhaps ammo cans would work great for matches?
Nicely done! =) Love your Mini Vader! He's adorable.
Kat Tee He is so funny. That brief segment was so random. Loves Darth Vader.
I think you're exceptional, I enjoy what's being done here
Haha you got a cute lil' guy. Thanks for some organization ideas.
Thanks, Ernie! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video - I use the shoe box idea currently - for the heavier items like water bottles or canned food as well as anything that fits - I use those heavy duty plastic milk crates - they are stackable and have built-in handles - very strong - easy to move on dolly four ast a time - I like the shoe caddy idea - very clever - can also be used to hold bottled medicine \ medical supplies - thanks for the heads up
cassanoa I like the milk crate idea! I wonder if I can find them in all of my colors?? :)
i have seen green - black - red - there probably are a few more colors - i wanted a container that could hold other containers and could be loaded into a truck and moved quick - they were built for the task - but - put them on there side and you have a shelf and upside down and you have a step - enough of them and you have a platform - they are very strong - that's how i store my canned food - stacked four high in a can tower - i currently have about twenty cases and looking for more - they carry everything small - 1 will hold 24 small water bottles - 20 standing and 4 laying on top and more cases on top - thy take up about 14 inches square and stack four for sure - i never tested the ultimate height they can go to but 4 fit on a dolly quit well
Excellent, thanks for sharing.
Undrunk room temp beer -What!? LOL! I guess you buy a lot at a time. No matter; I'm sure it will go to a good cause.
Good start on the organizing. An added bonus to using bins, when you're dealing with a deep shelf or cabinet, is the ability to make items in the back more accessible. And they make stock rotation easier. I've used that technique for quite awhile. For me it was a necessity as I live in an apt. I also use a "two story" upper/lower tiers method to maximize space in large open spaces like under the kitchen sink. Necessity truly is the mother of invention.
05generic Haha.. I think they were leftovers from a party. Since some of them are light beer (e.g., Miller Light), I've been hesitant to drink them over a NW Microbrew.
TheUrbanPrepper I think it's been about two years since I had a Miller Lite and as I recall, it wasn't terrible; just not rewarding. The trick with that kind of watered down pilsner is to get it very cold and don't take too long to down it.
Great idea about the "lazy suzy." I am inspired to try some of these ideas.
Loved this video! And everything turned out nicely! I just had to laugh at your term Dollar Tree Moms because it's correct. I have moved on from wanna be prepper to official prepper thanks to you. I plan on having vids of my prepping but not now. Thanks again for all that you do!
livelovelatte Thank you so much. The DTM's are skilled organizers! I've been very inspired by them. Can't wait for your prepping videos to come out. Be sure to keep me posted. I am honored to have inspired you.
Great video, Cliff (and your son is adorable!). I only WISH my DTS had the selection of organizational products that yours had. Goodness! I have three stores nearby but I've never seen anything like it.
Have you tried ordering online for store pick up? That is what I have been having to do.
Your son is adorable.
We have Poundland over here and some of the gear that you can get from there is awesome!! Great video!!
Kid Prepper is priceless!!!
Larry Norris He is so funny. He LOVES being a part of these videos and doing these random prepping projects.
The glass jars are amazing, just remember to put a little gasket on them to keep the air out and the food fresher for longer.
Small shower caddy hung on a back of a cabnet door works great.
So organised as always buddy. Something I think I need to start doing. EDC bag is all good but the mini mancave cupboard looks a mess lol. Thanks again for the inspiration Cliff :D
Chris Lee Thanks Chris! I have the same problem. I have a much easier time staying organized in smaller projects (EDC, Altoids, Backpacks, etc) but it gets out of control when you are dealing with large space that is community shared.
Great ideas! I am going to see how I can add the color designations in my own little prep.
Teri H Thanks! The colors have REALLY helped me. You'll be seeing a lot more colors in my upcoming EDC Backpack and Urban BOB 3.0 videos.
Speaking of organization, you should make a 'Dollar Tree Preps' playlist if you end up doing more of this kind of stuff.
ATF6281914 That's a good idea! I wasn't originally planning on doing very many Dollar Tree videos, but I would be happy to if it would interest viewers.
Outstanding!!! Great ideas!!!
Yeah, another example of why you shouldn't underestimate the power of the Dollar Tree. I'll definitely have to check out this DoItOnaDime channel, because I'm the worst at organization.
The lazy susans are genius
Cisco Labuanan I really liked that idea too. Makes total sense and the DIY versions are so affordable. I'm going to start using them all over the place.
Cisco Labuanan totally! I need to find me a Dollar Tree now...
I've tried the DIY lazy susans myself. It's a neat idea, but they don't really maximize your storage space. I had to pull mine out since I have so little storage
Cooome tooo piiiiinteressssst
(pinterest ghost)
Lateral thinking to become more effective.... I like that 8).looking forward to see those red bins, been a first critics has become my favourite hobby lol
we've all seen green or red barets, but this is the most cunning and powerful the black beret, smart enough to use altoids tins to hold his stuff , and yet powerful enough to destroy full camps.
john vetter LOL!
Ok, I love the cake pan lazy susans!
If I'm wrong about this feel free to correct me but it looked as if the shot caddy was fairly low in that cabinet. It may be a good idea to place that item higher in the cabinet so that the kids cannot gain access to those needles and potentially stick themselves with them.
Wow. I would probably make a sliding drawer that fits under a bed and load it up with modules and label the top.
Ono Cavinta I've been working on something similar to this. Having trouble controlling the dust buildup. I'm hoping to get it fine tuned this year though.
Excellent Darth Vader impression!
LOL @ 6:57 ... That kid is funny...
I would recommend that you put the sharps bin in your shot caddy if it will fit
CAKE PAN LAZY SUSAN FTW!!!!
Nice video!!!
Awesome videos. I'm a new sub, and have started watching a lot of your videos. This series was one of my favorites that I found. Hope to see more of it soon.
Great video, I just adopted your color coding system. It looks like I'm going to have to make a run to Dollar Tree sometime this week.
Awesome. I just sub'ed to her channel. Thanks! Can't wait to see more!
MonGo WonGo Nice! You'll like it. It's hard to be in a bad mood after watching a DoItOnADime video. They're always so uplifting.
If you're looking for a good toothpaste to stockpile, keep an eye out for Pepsodent. Its a dollar a tube and has a mild taste so even KP could probably use it. (amusingly enough, I've never seen it sold in Dollar Stores).
Frank Martin Thanks for the tip! I'll keep an eye out for it. KP enjoys Tom's Toothpaste.
Loved the home prep ideas, I walk by those stupid cheap bins all the time. I guess they're not so stupid. First weekend of May is usually house spring cleaning, "wifey is gonna drive me nutz all weekend" but wait till I get prepped & show her some of these ideas, Ha. I subscribed to DoItOnaDime. She's gonna love your shout out & the influx of new viewers. Kidprepper is probably as excited as I am to see the new star wars movie. There's gotta be a lot of flavor in that house, Sazon & Goya, LoL. Love it. Oh what's up with OpMod vs Operator conclusion?
Patricio Ayala Your wife will surely love the DoItOnADime organizing ideas! All of my female family members are now researching her videos after I showed them our reorganized pantry. DoItOnADime will probably notice an influx of random prepper UA-cam accounts (e.g., OCDPrepper, ZombieKilla4SHTF, MOLLE4Live). Haha... Yes, KP freaked out when he saw the new SW trailer. I'm half Puerto Rican and often prepare my grandmothers recipes. Love my hispanic spices!
My wife watch this video. twice & since from last 2 hours i am reorganization my staff . thanks to you for rowing my s.day morning , ha ha ha by the way gr8 video as usual
Yogesh Joshi LOL!!!!!! Sorry buddy. Glad to hear that you have the whole family watching my videos. That is so cool!
Good tips - thanks for sharing. Trip to the Dollar Tree was definitely a lot cheaper than some of your prior vids of shopping at REI :)
GegBrown Very true! I spend WAY too much money at REI and Amazon.
Amazing
Good Home preps…need to check her channel.
Nice vid. Your pantry looked similar to my current pantry which is in drastic need of organization. DoItOnaDime page has given me great ideas for organization all around my house.
Your pantry looks amazing now! Very inspiring! (And you're very lucky to have Darth Vader as your dollar store helper. ;-) )
his, hers, kids, purrs
I think we have the same shelves!!!!
wow, you got GOYA foods in Washington. LOL. i have things pretty organized reference my EDC, that sits in a night stand drawer next to my bed ( gun, spare mags, flashlight, multi tool and my folder knife) all my food preps and items used to prepare the foods IE. colman stoves, propane tanks and water are in the garage in big labeled plastic bins. 90% of my food preps are canned foods 10% dehydrated Wise foods. Except for my daily vitamins and supplements all my medicine and major medical emergency supplies are in a very large back pack in case i have to take it with me. the medical bag and my bug out bag sit in a small corner in my closet.
thanks for sharing, great advise
michael leon I love GOYA products. I'm a half breed Puerto Rican and often cook hispanic cuisine. One of these days I need to share a few recipes that my grandma (aka "Mama") used to make. Most cold totally be done out of your pantry supplies. It sounds like you have a nice, methodical setup! I'd love to see some photos/videos to get some ideas.
i'll look you up on facebook maybe I can send some pics that way.
Nice! I always have trouble with Sterlite lids but other than that great vid!
I get all my ideas from doitonadime
Great video. Been watching your videos for a while and I thought you were the most organised man in the world, glad to see your house is / was the same as the rest of us lol off topic question. You mentioned in a video before that you received silver coins. I think it was from one of your football betting videos. Do you have any advice for buying silver? Is this also a good thing to invest in?
NorthIrishPrepper Haha... Thanks. I'm pretty good at organizing smaller projects (e.g., Altoids, EDC, backpacks, etc). I have problems keeping large spaces in the house, that are community shared, organized. They are quick to go downhill if I don't take control of it. I often buy silver bars/bullion from local coin shops and APMEX. I used to be more into it, but I offloaded most of my silver when it was approaching $50 per ounce. I think it is good to invest in, although I would keep it balanced with your other investments. Feeling precious metals in your hand is a very cool experience.
I'M DYING FROM CUTENESS, LORD SAVE ME NOW!
+Craggytown DGC LOL!
BUG OUT BAG TIM E=GREAT VIDEO..
VHS/DVD Storage door racks work great. Not as cheap as the shoe hangers though.
+jerry52346 Nice tip, Jerry!
Do you have a bag specific to your car? For making some quick temporary repairs to tires or other things if you get stranded on the road?
UberPwnage72 Yes. I have a few different modules in my car for repairs and vehicle EDC needs. I'm actually working on refining my vehicle setup this year, but I want to finish my updated EDC Backpack and Urban BOB (3.0) first.
Hello from several videos i have seen about survival, prepping and organization the only solution viable i find for the can's storage it's the old but reliable Can rotator, it almost takes no space at all and it is not really hard to make. I hope that helps you i have the same problem.
I love the can rotator. Do you have a specific model that you prefer?
+TheUrbanPrepper Since i live in a small house in Argentina i'm working on different types so i can be flexible with my budget to, so cheap lazy susan's since the real ones aren't sold in my country and I don't have money to make one for the moment are the ones i use. Also for smaller cans like tuna or paté etc the Pringles can i have seen in a video that it can be used as a can rotator too. But the main one i aspire to have it's the one indicated in The old ways book by Claude Davis, i couldn't buy the book yet but his introduction video was enough for me.
lol, cool vid man. subscribed to doitonadime.
BigPaperBear Nice! She has a ton of great organization ideas.
O.o haha nice video!
Great vid as always and this one has made me want to get more organized in my little man cave, where did you get those chalkboard labels.
Hi Again,
I've just caught up with this vid (I'm actually looking for an email address for you as I thought I saw a Gmail in the description of one of your vids) but the first thing that struck me was how on earth did you get Mrs UP to agree to a) agree to this and b) to keep following it!!! The only thing my wife keeps organised is her stash of material for quilting and sewing..
Cheers
Tom
Where did you find the glass jars (that you used for flour, sugar, etc...) for so cheap? I want them!
I got them on sale at Target. The huge one was more expensive though.
Would you recommend this approach for College Students who are just getting there first home away from their parents?
***** I'd recommend this approach for anyone who has "stuff". Check out George Carlin's comedy sketch on "Stuff". It totally ties in with this topic. :)
how did you record this? The store let you? I'm very curious. Great video by the way. I've been stalling too. Got started today.
your cool
I have a hard time controlling myself when I go to the dollar store. I one time spent 80 dollars
Goya Adobo and Sazon? Are you Puerto Rican? FYI they have alot of MSG.
Judo Prepper Yes. I am a half breed Puerto Rican. I love the cuisine! Yes, I've heard of of the MSG in some of the seasonings. My grandma used to use those ingredients during her cooking and I don't know of any alternatives yet.
lol, I thought so. My wife is from PR and she uses Goya exclusively. Our pantry looks like we are sponsored by them! Great vid by the way.
Why the need for so many matches?
You need to get rid of that garbage disposal nothing but bad for your drains. But this video is 6 years old
Wanna come do mine
Kid Vader.
