Video Games adapted from TV or films are, generally, not easy to pull off. Though there are plenty of strong examples of this transition done well, the change in medium will typically leave the experience feeling quite a bit different than its source material, even if the game itself is satisfying in its own right. There is, however, an absolutely massive exception to this rule, and that exception is the South Park games. 2014’s South Park: The Stick of Truth achieved the impossible, creating an incredibly fun adventure RPG set in the town of South Park that truly feels like it PLACES you in a massive episode of the series itself. So let’s talk about South Park: The Stick of Truth.

Sounds like a pyramid scheme, do you swear by this company? I want your word
@@slycethif you’re not old enough to file a claim through them, I wouldn’t worry about it 👍 pretty sure you have to be 18 to do this but maybe I’m wrong 🤷♂️
Can you review Xavier renegade angel?
@@slyceth do you have any idea what a pyramid scheme is lol
I love those two games so much whenever I get a new console I'll get used to it by playing those games again
I adore this game because not only does it feel like a SP episode, it’s actually a really great RPG. Also the music is top tier.
I meant to talk about the music but instead I just used it to back the final stretch in the video
@@Johnny2Cellos dude the character creation song A Hero Is Born gets me every time
Both of the games are really good
Imo Fractured is better as a game (the combat system is much more fun), but I prefer Stick's story and writing.
The only sar but funny thing is that people in europe Dont get the nasty aparts like the abortion and the anal probe of randy
I refused to “enter” Mr. Slave and then the snuke blew up & the credits began to roll. I was laughing on the floor for 30 minutes 😂
Something similar with me. When giving an abortion to the snuke bomb I messed up a few times and it legit exploded and played the ending theme it was so ducking funny
@@newunfinished9320 same, my first play through I failed i then proceeded to laugh my fucking ass off
Same lol! When they were all looking around expectantly like 'Hmmm if only there was someone who knows how to perform abortions and shrink 🤔" I was like 'oh hell no' and walked out the back tent door and saw the explosion and had to sit through the entire credits and could not stop laughing.
On launch the last abort minigame (on PC) had a bug that you couldn't play with the controller, so I fucked up... And then, on PS3, for some reason, the screen before enter Mr. Slave frozen, and then I accidentally walked out of the tent.
How lomg did you have to wait? Cuz I waited a while but it never blew up
It truly feels like you're playing a really long south park episode and i love it!
I absolutely love that about it, I'm barely 3 hrs in my first run and it just feels like I'm watching an actual episode
Started playing it yesterday.. this is exactly how it feels lol
An interactive South Park episode.
How could you not mention the fact that you can’t skip the cutscenes where cartman asks you to skip
I didn't even realize cause I'm a spiteful person 🤣
I didn't know that because I never skipped Jimmy! I would always say "it's okay buddy, you'll get there!"
And he did.
Both Stick of truth and Fractured but whole are great games, It's so lived in and immersive. I also loved how well written they are, from plot to dialogues.
I think fractured but whole is better, but they’re both great
I prefer SoT's style of combat, but i find TFBW to be funnier
@@bigtacocat Wow that's interesting, I personally preferred Stick of Truth way more than Fractured But Whole
@@imtiredofitallmakeitstop That's probably why I enjoyed SoT more than TFBW. I loved the combat because it felt more satisfying
I really like SoT but TFBW has to be my favourite. After finishing SoT I never really felt like replaying it- on the other hand I did many runs on TFBW, probably because I enjoy its combat system, being able to play with more than just two characters and character creation (as in classes and attacks) more than what SoT has to offer. I still think they're both incredible games tho.
Cartman's line during the cutscene before the final boss where he says "can we skip this? like, hit the skip button or something?" is so much better due to the fact that you actually can't skip that cutscene, if you try it just says you can't skip it. trust me, I've tried.
genuinely one of my fave games of all time, the perfect version of a tv/movie branded video game because it actually feels like you are in an real episode of South Park but is also entirely new in its storyline and isn’t a direct adaptation of any specific episode’s plot.
i wish they would make another video game, they have so many settings and mechanics in show that would be awesome to get to play through them.
I think they have a second game and a mobile game too
@@sublime8681 another game meaning another full game beyond the two they have already made. i’m not a fan of the style of the mobile games and don’t really count it with these quality of the two console games. i’ve played them all, honestly the Stick Of Truth is way better than the follow up game
@@hambone.fakenamington I'd personally argue Fractured But Whole is better than Stick of Truth tbh.
Both are top notch, but while Stick of Truth definitely had a lot more shock value stuff that caused me to lose my shit laughing, while Fractured But Whole had a lot more character interactions between characters from the show, (and just gave more characters screentime to begin with.)
More than anything though the fact that Stick of Truth is braindead easy no matter what difficulty you play on and the game doesn't exactly have a lot of class variety hurts it compared to the sequel in my opinion. I loved my first run to death, but I don't often find myself replaying it in full because of this (and because the game kinda drags in the latter half with all the nazi zombie crap and the main plot sorta taking the backseat to doing sidequests to build up an army.)
Fractured But Whole's gameplay feels a lot more refined with creative systems in place to help it stand out and a respectable level of difficulty on Mastermind or Diabolic difficulty levels on top of way more classes, abilities and party members that almost all have a niche in different party compositions.
@@Robbie_Haruna the reason i would rank The Fractured But Whole lower is precisely because of the gameplay. The character interactions are excellent but i didn’t get any more enjoyment from them that i didn’t also get from Stick of Truth.
@@hambone.fakenamington They’re making another one already
Both Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole are so immersive and fun especially if you are a fan of South Park. I find that whichever someone played first tends to be their favorite- Stick of Truth just hits different!
Stick of Truth is more batshit (in a good way) and I prefer the setting more but fractured is also great and the gameplay is leagues better. That’s how I’ve always seen it
Crazy timing, literally re-downloaded this just a couple hours ago to play through it again, it's an absolutely great game.
I liked all the different completely overpowered builds you could do at the end. It felt like a reward for collecting stuff and doing side activities and just was a great power trip at the end.
The Thief was super broken with the bleed mechanic. So good.
The Parents coming to find you genuinely scared the ever-loving sh*t out of me when I played this when I was younger. There's something about how they just track you down freaked me out lol.
i remember getting this game christmas 2014, i was 8 and i got stuck on the part when you get abducted by the aliens. wasn't until a couple years later that i finally beat the game. still to this day stick of truth is my favorite game of all time.
Aha thought i was bad playing it at 13! Did your parents not know what south park was?!😂
My controller was terrible for button mashing
The same thing happened to me 😭😭 I was stuck on that part so I quit and didn’t play it until the sequel came out
Bro I got the game when I was 8 too, dafuq
I was 16. Everything was so simple back then
From learning about the existence of Tweek and Craig to watching every scene with them in the series, to watching all your previous South Park videos, to watching some of their best episodes, to watching both yours and the Roundtable’s South Park themes videos that were released today. Today’s turning out to be a South Park day for me
As someone that doesn't like South Park, I adored the game. It's crazy how good it came out as a video game.
I finished this game over 20 times and I can say that it never got old
The south park games in general have a great feeling to them that barely any game adaptations of series can pull off so well.
I honestly can't wait for the new game to come out, when they dropped a tease last year I was pumped for it ever since.
it sucks btw
Johnny I want you to know that I’m subbed to quite a few people but you’re the only channel I have notifications on for because you’re the only channel who gives consistently great content that I always want to watch, regardless what it’s about.
Keep it up my man.
AN HONOR, SIR KNIGHT
i would feel so loneley if i didnt see the little red number next to the bell everytime i get a notification it lights me up
10:54 "Achievment Unlocked New Kid On The Block" , "You Have Joined The KKK". (This broke me.)
The only reason I got into South Park back in 1997 was because it looked like an Earthbound cartoon.
Little did I know that Trey and Matt LOVE the Mother series, and it served as inspiration.
Wait, really?
@@jameztheartist3893 No joke, I'm as stunned as you are. They mention the Mother series SEVERAL times as a point of inspiration.
Plus Pokey/Porky is CLEARLY Cartman's inspiration.
@@thedrewdog sick af
@@jameztheartist3893 Ain't it though? I was lucky enough to buy and love Earthbound back in 1995, then 2 years later, I basically get an adult Earthbound cartoon.
Plus, the first South Park episode has them fighting ALIENS, and it features talking cows, Trey and Matt clearly loved some SNES RPG's and clearly adore Earthbound.
So that means Eric Cartman = Ness Earthbound = Sans und...
This one for sure IS the closest to capturing the feel, but I do wanna give a special shout out to Strongbad's Cool Game 4 Attractive People for not only feels right in step with the original web series, but is possibly just the single best thing ever made related to Homestead Runner. This game, Stick of Truth, made me feel the same way
YOOOO the shout-out to SBCGFAP!! It really captured the essence of homestar runner, not enough people played it.
Gotta love a shout out to anything Homestar Runner related, but especially Strong Bad’s Cool Game 4 Attractive People! I miss old TellTale, tbh
Strong Bad is all up ons, and his video game deserves a pizza trophy.
So glad this game is getting praise. It's my absolute favourite game. I'll played it countless times
this game had me hooked from the first few minutes! i haven't kept up with modern SP in a long time, but the games show the appeal of the series perfectly. not to mention the character creation aspect and getting to see your little avatar hanging out and befriending the characters is just adorable!
I'm so glad you did a video on this. Not only have I been itching to replay it, but it's one of my favorite games of all time. Can't wait to see your FBW video!
I've been thinking about replaying this because there was one achievement I didn't get in my last run, I'm taking this a sign 😂Another great video, thanks Johnny!
I would love to see a video about TFBW. I thoroughly enjoy both but definitely prefer the combat in TFBW.
I think FBW is much better as a game overall.
In terms of writing and humor I think it depends what you like more. If you're more a fan of the shock factor over the top humor then you'll like SoT more, but if you put more value in character interactions (and like having more characters from the show get more screentime,) then you'll like FBW more.
But as far as gameplay goes, Fractured But Whole's gameplay is unique with strategy elements and lots of different approaches depending on your class and party comp, something that all comes together neatly when you play on higher difficulties and the game starts asking more of you in difficult encounters.
Stick of Truth's gameplay isn't bad, but it feels like an easier Paper Mario with less combat variety and worse partner balance. It's not bad, but being braindead easy even on the highest difficulty really makes it kinda start to drag in the latter half of the game (the game in general drags a bit in the second half.) There's a reason I've replayed Fractured But Whole in full like... Four times, but barely managed to do two in Stick of Truth.
@@Robbie_Haruna i dont like how slow Fractured But Wholes fighting is. it takes more strategy but it feels like even simple fights just drag on forever
And with the profile thing I feel LEFT OUT😅 there’s no option for mixed people like me and there’s no nationality option for British🤷♀️ it made it uncomfortable having to pick something I’m not so I had to stop playing, until that point I was enjoying the game 😣
your videos always beam with real love for the topics you talk about it’s so addicting to watch
I remember getting this game on my 8th birthday, and I absolutely loved it. My most recent playthrough I picked Jew, and let me be honest, it's the most fun out of the classes.
I remember how excited I was for the first game to come out and I didn't get to play it until a few years later where I made it to college and just buy games for myself without my parents judgment. It was definitely fun to immerse yourself into the South Park world and make your sona while you're at it. It also does make you miss the old South Park before PC Principle arrived. Some of the things from South Park might be outdated, but still hilariously fun to play.
South Park has set the bar for amazing video game adaptations. SoT was an amazing game and TFBW was an amazing sequel and the DLC was also amazing too. I can't wait to see more.
I replayed this one and the 2nd dozens of times. I love them so much
Just watched the video and I'm so hyped! 😄 Heading home to start a fresh playthrough - it's been a while since I last played! 🎮
Love this game!! You just reminded me of the first time I got to the snuke part and was tasked with going inside somebody. I said oh, HELL NO, turned and left the room. That triggered the bomb and the credits roll on the game. I laughed my ass off.
this is nuts, i literally started replaying it for the first time in YEARS today and you upload this. great video, man!❤
Both these games are awesome man, so well done and feel like you’re in the shows seasons and plot lines
If you ever want to try another archetype, the rogue with bleed attacks and effects triggering on bleeds are also pretty insane.
Never tried that. Always just go Jew
The two South Park RPG games are easily two of the most authentic licensed video games ever produced. The sheer care and craftsmanship that went into them cannot be understated. Both are also just really good and fun video games as well.
I just finished playing it and it was an AMAZING experience, personally, I liked the stick of truth more than the fractured but whole, but that's just my opinion
Johnny, love your commentary! I’ve spent quite a few hours listening to your and Tariq’s podcast. Super dope.
What a great breakdown, showing that the entire game on top of being an amazing South Park episode and fun RPG, is also a celebration of everything South Park is. That is also beautiful, genuinely. It's a game and a series I hold dearly!
I can appreciate the love and care that went into Stick of Truth, but it wasn't for me as I am not a fan of Turn Based Combat that SOT used. But The Fractured But Whole, that's an amazing game. One of my faves. Because it has the love and care that SOT had as well as a fun turn based mechanics with being able to get away from attacks.
Will you be talking about the sequel game, The Fractured but Whole as well too?
yep!
Ah the game I have mixed feelings about because the option to pick my ethnicity and nationality is not there😅 and if I pick anything else it feels like I’m lying about myself 😣
These two games are such a blast to play. I loved how well they captured the South Park vibe. It’s been a while since I’ve played either one, but this has got me in the mood to pick them back up for another playthrough. 👍
I recently just replayed the game and it’s the best game I’ve ever played and nothing will ever replace it.
If Stick of Truth is perfect then Fractured But Whole is even better than perfect !
Loving the south park content! Also wanted to say I really love your playlist names on this channel!
THANK YOU finally some credit for my greatest achievement
@@Johnny2Cellos to be fair, I noticed it a while ago, but never thought to point it out.
Awesome video, can’t wait for the follow up
honestly, in terms of the sp games, i kind of prefer fractured but whole, but i still really love revisiting stick of truth. such a solid game and such an impressive feat to make such a good game that really feels like you get to be in the show.
Putting the goth kids in the video while referring the vampire kids was an excellent touch!
Such a great game looking forward to the second instalment that really tightened up the game play I feel hopefully a third game will iron out the remaining issues and have just a little more length to completion.
Great video, Johnny! Thanks for all the feel-good feelings of South Park. I feel the same way,
I just started replaying Stick of Truth again this week! It’s so much fun, and the classic South Park humor comes through just perfectly. During the battle against Cartman, I laughed so hard at the dueling farts that I forgot what I was doing and got myself killed.
In my opinion, the only ways to improve upon the game would be to just add more content, branching paths, and maybe a hard mode since the game does get pretty easy at points. Still the exploration, gameplay, and story are all incredibly enjoyable and the game is amazing to me.
I just finished my most recent playthrough. I did mage too. That firecracker ability carried me it was so good.
One of my favorite parts was the difficulty slider but it’s just choosing your race
I'm a huge south park fan
I always pictured how the characters would interact with me if I was in south park
and this game along with the fractured but whole really satisfy that idea and makes me so happy
Hands down one of my favorite video games of all time. One of the few I’ve played all the way through. It’s just such a well made game.
Great video, played this one on my ps3 when it came out, for me the best game based on a show ever
Omg loved this video, the South Park games are amazing! 🎉 can’t wait for the second review!
Randys kick had me rolling when I saw it the first time
I’ve played these 2 games so much over the years , I adore them
Excellent points. Counterpoint: Superheros are cool and TFBW has Creek content
Wow i’ve been watching a ton of South Park lately so i just replayed this last week! Very fun game.
You forgot to mention the amazing sounds of the game. Every hit, dialogue and most importantly music is so perfect, it really sounds like what it felt like to play theese kinds of games.
Now I feel like I have to replay it 😅
Thank You Johnny. You inspired me to get platinum for this game which is pretty cool.
I love both games so so much. I completely agree with all you said about them.
Be sure to cover the DLC for the Fractured but Whole game too!! So much awesome story and map to explore.
Perfectly said. Cant wait for you to cover the next one
Can we also mention that the only line the new kid says, WAS cartmans old catchphrase
Man, I remember playing South Park Rally on the N64 when I was a young kid. Weird memories.
When the topic of South Park games comes up there’s always the missing hidden gem that is South Park 64. A golden eye parody for the n64. Not the best game on the console but am actual sleeper hit
I didn’t know about this. I still have a working n64 so I may try to track down a copy
recently bought this game and am playing it (: nice to see more vids coming out ab it
People that say we are the problem for calling Tolkien token are the problem, because they don't listen when token says he doesn't like his real name, I'm a true South Park fan because I listen too the characters and there actions
this game nailed the introductions of characters and for someone who watches SP religiously it still felt fresh but at the same time they still kept it true to the character they introduced. classic Butters getting beat up then befriends you, eric I assume appointing himself the best and you have to respect his "authorita!", kyle being sick of cartman and starts his own kingdom, stan being kyles right hand man. Not just the kids either, the adults were introduced in classic sp fashion. truly a fantastic game that left out almost little to nothing
I loved Stick of Truth. Such a great game. I need to play the next one soon. I actually have played these two games before but it was like 5 years ago and I was not really paying attention hence I forgot a lot of things about it
I’m glad someone is talking about this game.
I thought I was the only one playing it.
I loved this game . I really enjoyed how it felt like I was in a South Park episode. I remember I had gotten both game when the sequel came out. Storywise they were both great but I think I may have enjoyed the combat alot more in the Fractured But Whole.
Both The Stick of Truth and Fractured, But Whole brilliantly combined the feel of watching South Park with playing a good RPG. I am extremely hopeful for a third one!
That’s wild I’m literally replaying both games right now.
i know you are probably thinking about waiting a while before doing the sequel games video but it would look nice on the channel and im definitely ready anticipating it 😅
Oh I am SO excited to see your thoughts on The fractured but whole! I own that game, but i've never actually finished it!
This is the first UA-cam video I have ever seen that is sponsored by a law firm.
I had so much fun with this game. It's one of my absolute favorites.
also it is a nice looking lineup as an addition to the recent uploads
Those were not vampire kids. Those were goths.
i need to replay this now
It's such a fun game, with so many references. And even if you don't get all of them it's still a fun game with a really good battle system
recently been playing through this again so this is perfect
I love how the music in town evokes Skyrim’s soundtrack with the boys doing the Nordic chants
Stick of truth was an amazing ride. Since the Witcher 1 the only game I couldn't put down
Perfect timing. I just replayed this game. Amazing game.
I literally just started replaying this yesterday
The stick itself is functionally reminiscent of the "Please, please tell me" ball that Conjectural Technologies battled St. Cloud for in The Venture Bros
I just so happened to have finished this game 3 days ago. Love this timing lol
Stick of truth really got me into into southpark even more when it came out. And than when I was bed ridden in highschool all I'd play and replay was TFBW. They're both truly masterpieces of games and TFBW will always be in my top 5.
LES GO i just bought both games because of this video lol. can’t wait to enjoy them and hear you talk about the next one
I love this game because it feels like a episode that would happen in the show and the open world RPG is amazing 10/10 game
i just "finished" the game (i luckily still have a few side-quests left) for the first time and i really enjoyed it
it was very immersive, fun, and well-made and i think it aged perfectly for it being almost 10 years old
can't wait to play the sequel
One thing I'd like to say is that for everything I enjoy about the game, I came to resent it by the end. Mostly because I was playing the switch version late at night and repeatedly failed the abortion clinic minigame, so many times I had to put it down for a while. I eventually got back to it with a guide and an actual controller but I still got to this point where I absolutely dreaded opening it up again, and after beating it, I felt like I was probably never going to touch it again, even if part of me wanted to experience the other classes.
I love that your parents lock you out of the house on the first day if you refuse to go outside. So many easter eggs in this game
I loved this game so much that I've played it twice in a row. No perfect runs or speedruns, but man did I enjoy it to its full content.
