Notably, Norton's Coin was owned and trained by an ordinary diary farmer, instead of anyone else more prominent in the racing world. He did his daily farming work before hurrying to the racecourse.
Probably one of the most profitable days for bookies, ever.
One example is people were getting on flights to Jersey from Bournemouth airport, with suitcases full of cash to punt on Dessie in the bookies over there, coz it was (intended to be) more profitable than paying the UK betting tax. Huge sums were lost on Dessie that day.
He's still one of the greatest tho....😀
He won this race fair and square, you wouldn't think he was a 100-1 shot in running as he was on the bridle until two out
Dont even like horse racing but was just reading about this, a great underdog win
200/1 the morning of the race. Just shows how tricky a race the Gold Cup can be. Best horse doesn't always win so beware Galopin.
Represents the race's longest priced winner. I seem to remember the race as the 1989 winner Desert Orchid loses his crown.
Yes I saw 1989 race, started betting 1994...
It went quiet at the line lol
Still can't knock desert orchid a great horse
I won 202 quid that day I screamed place down I just put 2 quid on no 7
I had £3 ew on it.
Ten of Spades ruined it for Dessie.
