  • In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key facts you need to know about a medication called Tamsulosin, also known by its brand names Flomax Relief and Flomaxtra XL.
    In the video we cover:
    1. What tamsulosin is and why you might take it
    2. Common strengths of tablets
    3. How and when to take it and what to do if if you forget to take it, or if you take too much by
    accident
    4. Common and important side effects to be aware of
    5. And finally some commonly asked questions
    Basic information:
Tamsulosin belongs to a group of medicines called alpha-blockers. It's used to treat men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostate enlargement).
It's also occasionally taken to treat kidney stones.
Tamsulosin is available on prescription and you can also buy it from pharmacies. It comes as tablets and capsules.
If you buy tamsulosin from a pharmacy make sure you see your doctor within 6 weeks of starting your treatment to make sure it's OK for you to carry on taking this medicine.
Tamsulosin is also known by brand names such as Flomax Relief and Flomaxtra XL.
Tamsulosin is sometimes combined with other ingredients to treat bladder problems and enlarged prostate. Brand names include Vesomni (with solifenacin) and Combodart (with dutasteride).

Very informative, thank you. I have been taking Tamsulosin for many months due to a slightly enlarged prostate and having to pee up to five or six times a night. Never any problems during the day so I take the tablet once a day each evening. I now pee no more than once or twice a night. But since starting treatment I have suffered increasing episodes of heart beat irregularity - palpitations and sometimes mild chest pains, plus poor circulation in my left hand causing daily tingling and mild numbness. I had once 5 minute ECG at the surgery which raised no concerns, followed by a 24 hour ECG 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting for the results. Some days I have very regular palpitations - "missed" (extra?) beat every four or five beats and slight breathlessness, although I'm active and walk miles. Tamsulosin can cause palpitations in rare cases according to the leaflet, but my doctor told me she had never heard of it causing heart problems. I had two Astra Zeneca covid jabs way back (followed by a booster of Pfizer) and I know AZ has been linked to heart irregularities albeit mostly mild or short-lived. Should I be worried or going to A&E when the episodes are very regular?

Hi, and sorry for taking so long to reply - yes have had similar but I suffered a serious neck injury and legs, hands can tingle anyway. As with you had some weird heartbeats at time but find breathing and staying calm helps until it eases off. Found the menopausal sweats difficult but went onto sage and it helped a bit. Often thought about going to A&E at times but I figure if the heart attack happens it happens. Like you have had numerous checks over the now 5 years and at 75 still here so no complaints -symptoms in my case, did ease after the first year - am active and walk for an hour or so each day - so no complaints. I have been taking Tamsulosin for approximately eight years now since having radiation for prostate cancer. I take two capsules a night 0.4mg each. (Started with one and it was raised to two.) There can be downsides like the stuffy or runny nose issues, dry climax, weird dreams, feeling faint etc. issues. However, the body does learn to adjust to most of them, given the chance. It doesn't adjust to peeing without it. So, the tradeoff is, do you want to wear a catheter and see how well the climax fairs then? Is wearing a bag a better trade off than a stuffy or runny nose etc. You decide, frankly I don't like the side effects, but the alternative is not the better for me. I'll keep on taking the Tamsulosin. Prostate pain is no fun, for such a small organ it can be such a heavy weight on the body and the mind.

I have been prescribed Alfuzosine, which is also an Alpha blocker, probably pretty similar to Tamsulosin (correct me if I’m wrong). It’s good you mention that those drugs lower blood pressure. The issue is that my normal blood pressure is lowish, usually 110/70. After taking a pill, i nearly collapsed as my blood pressure fell to around 75/50. Had to stop taking it as it’s not compatible with my life style.

I’ve been taking Tamsulosin for about 10 years. I had a liver transplant about 15 years ago. Thankfully, I’ve had diminished semen side effects. I take it every night at 10pm. One night about a month ago, I forgot to take it. The next morning I could barely urinate. A couple hours later I had to drive my self to the ER where they inserted a catheter and after an extremely painful morning, I urinated. Do not forget to take your Tamsulosin.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size.

Tamsulosin worked great for me for BPH, but there is a "side" effect that I have never heard mentioned before. Alpha blockers work by relaxing smooth muscle tissue, such as that surrounding arteries, which can lower blood pressure. But there are also other areas with smooth muscle that can be affected, such as the peristaltic action of the intestines, thus slowing digestion. And since it relaxes the urinary sphincter, it can also relax other sphincters, such as the esophogeal sphincter. So if you have a hiatal hernia, like me, be prepared to get increased acid reflux coupled with slow moving food through the intestines. This results in something just as miserable as it sounds.

A consultation with my primary care physician got me on a changed prescription for my high blood pressure.
