- A 1/2 million mile Toyota 4runner is saved from the junkyard and given a new life. This video includes both episode 1- A New Life, and episode 2- A Rough Start. This fun and hilarious off-road series follows three couples in their adventures. Follow the 2005 Toyota 4runner, a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser, and a 2018 Toyota Tacoma as they offroad and camp in different states and offroad trails. This is all about laughing and off-roading while seeing beautiful places at the same time.

1) AM I AN IDIOT FOR TRYING THIS!?!? This isn't my first rodeo guys. Been off roading for 10 years now. I've had a 1st gen SAS on 35s all the way up to a 3rd gen 5spd on 33s. It was very fun and challenging to get thrown back into a stock vehicle, especially on street tires... it made me appreciate again how much all those little mods really do that I got so used to having on a rig.
2) The startup noise was valve tap (lifters) and I wouldn't have put that in the video if I wasn't 100% sure about it. It takes a bit for oil pressure to build up after the oil drains down from the car sitting for months. I appreciate you guys listing your hypothesis because it shows me you care haha, but honestly you are diagnosing this through a digital speaker whereas I heard it in real life.
3) YES WE DID AIR DOWN at the 2nd waterfall. The 4runner lost too much ground clearance from airing down and literally scraped on every rock... I had to AIR BACK UP in order to clear the obstacles hahaha.
4) The auction was COPART. You need a business license in the auto industry to bid on most vehicles.

Just started looking at a few 4.7 V8s have popped up in my neighborhood and was wondering if you can determine a 4wd/2wd from external view, or are all 2004s AWD? I’ve read/learned that these engines are solid, so considering buying one. Thanks for any insights!
@@greenbanana2332 Other than the 4wd badge there aren't distinguishing factors. There are many 2wd versions so look for the 4wd badge on the side of the front door. Also look for the interior look for the 4hi 4lo knob on the left of the center console. If you're there physically just take a peak and see if it has cv axles going to the front wheels.

@@zawszeedek You missed the whole point of the video. Any 4runner with the typical 3" lift on the typical 285 tires will make it up those rocks (when dry). Ask me how I know. The point was to have fun. Yes hitting the tree was stupid. No denying that. If you want an "explanation" for why it happened. Im always open to conversation!

4th Gen Runners are pretty reliable and worthy off road. All she needs is some good tires and some body protection, she'll follow that new Tacoma almost anywhere.

@@cM-np3no Haha. In that type of terrain the 4runner definitely had an advantage with the shorter wheelbase and shorter rear overhang. Thats why there isnt footage of the Tacoma trying the 2nd waterfall. The Tacoma does have all those nice traction control features though and thats where it beats the FJ and 4runner.
Dirt Complex lockers will even the score, although that would cost double what you paid for the 4runner unless you're an experienced diff tech
The 4.7 is a great motor, wish they put them in the 2nd gen Tacoma.

I have a 08 4runner with the 4.0 1GR-FE And it also does great stock offroad the suspension travel is ridiculous it's about 2 feet before the tire comes off the ground when I put it up on a lift
That was the standard JDM 100 series petrol Landcruiser and the 105 LC. Or if you didn’t want that, we have in the newer 70series LANDCRUISER a 4.5l V8 Turbo diesel that’ll rock on past even the old 1hj. The newer 200 series Cruiser (for you in nth America, the Lexus 570), gets the same engine but TWIN turbo! Bit of a tune to EITHER engine will have you wayyy over 650+ft/lbs of earth spinnng Torque
Great frickin' video...loved it! You had me laughing...You and I have a similar story regarding our 4Runners. My 1999 Toyota 4Runner literally saved my life - that and I had God and his angels watching over me. I was driving back home to Washington (originally from Bay Area and can't wait to leave this God-awful corrupt state of WA)...anyways, driving back home during wintertime a few months ago and the stupid CAL TRANS aholes did not put de-icer on the roads, yet again (the same thing happened on my way down a few weeks earlier), around the Shasta County/Weed/Yreka area of the I-5. Anyways, I come up to this one blind turning section and I see a trucker on the side of the road waving his arms wildly about one hundred yards from me. At that exact moment, I am driving over the "bridge-like" (overpass) sections that are made of different concrete material and which freeze up all the time during wintery/snow conditions, causing major accidents throughout this country. So I see the trucker waving wildly and just as I see him, I enter this frozen bridge-like section. I tap...only tap on my breaks to simply release the cruise control and here we go...I do three full 360's starting on this frozen bridge and am literally thinking Nascar Racing as I'm grabbing onto the "oh-shit" bar. I end up skating/flying backward down this bridge section, then onto the main I-5 road and then down a big embankment - at this point all in reverse/flying backward and down the steep embankment. I am literally thinking that I'm going to flip at any moment...Incredibly, not only do I not flip, after my 360's and flying off the embankment, but my bumper and my tailgate hitch literally saved my life (God and his angels, of course, are the main saviors here). I end up hitting a tree with my bumper/tail hitch exactly dead on - my trailer hitch hit this tree head-on preventing me...stopping me from continuing to go down further and/or flip repeatedly. After I hit and am trying to collect myself, trying to get out of shock, I get out and now see all the previous accidents before me that occurred before mine - numerous flipped over cars all around me with a guy's truck flipped over and smoking less than 20 yards away from me. Chaos everywhere and I keep hearing that dreaded, horrific sound of cars still crashing. As I'm running up the embankment I see my 49ers tail hitch cover halfway sticking out of the ground. I chuckle, laugh in astonishment as I cannot believe how my cover hitch is in the ground barely sticking out of the dirt so far away from where I ended up. I continue up the embankment to avoid more car crashes/flips and to see who to help. A crazy day but I am still alive - for my kids. My silver Toyota 4Runner...wow, the only damage was just like yours when you hit a tree - I had damage to my bumper and dents on the back top of the back hatch door. I am lucky to still be here... I loved your story of how you went to go pick up your 4Runner and got it back to life and running well. Just made me think...

almost the 4runner and GX 470 motors are built in Japan. i read that the 4.7s built in Japan are built with a forge steel crankshaft.
You just bought a badass suv man! I have a 2005 Land Cruiser , same 4.7 L V8 And I’ve got 273,000 miles on it. We bought it back in 2004 brand new, and had it ever since! One owner car, gonna keep it forever !
I picked up a $3500 02 Sequoia with 260k a year ago. Last owner took care of it. 4.7 V8 runs so smooth! Did the water pump and timing belt, changed all the fluids, and put new tires on it. Fixed back hatch replaced headlights, and installed Nav/back-up camera radio. Have moved twice cross country with it. Going on a vacation with GF this summer with it. I'll crack 300 by the end of the year. Love it....except for gas mileage.
Because I'm a cheap bastard, when it came time to buy a new car, I picked up a 2006 Limited V8 about a year and a half ago. 189k on the odometer. My wife thought I was nuts buying anything with that many miles, considering that we're in Pennsylvania, where almost everything is rotting away before 150k thanks to heavy road salt use. But my 4Runner came from Tennesee. And so, after a year and a half, the thing has had only a few minor issues. It's needed a new brake caliper, a u-joint in the steering column, and as we speak, it's having a rusted-out line to the transmission cooler replaced. That isn't bad for a 200k vehicle. It has a decent amount of torque, has tons of room for a baby seat in the back, it's comfortable, and capable (I just need some mud tires and a mild lift), and I can tow 7,000 pounds if I really want to. The fuel economy sucks but who cares. Congrats on this purchase, hope it goes another 500k!
Thats awesome! My friends thought I was nuts as well... but I just took this thing on a 1600 mile trip to Utah and back. hahah. It's the hot rod of 4runners and its reliable. I doubt there will ever be another V8 4runner ever again.
@@DirtComplex I agree. It's exactly why I wanted an 03-08. Basically a Land Cruiser drivetrain in a smaller body. I also have two Utah trips coming up, once in June, once in August. More so for mountain biking than for off-roading, but it's good to know what this thing is capable of, even on OEM tires. The only bummer about these trips are the 24+ hours of highway driving on the way out and then again on the way back.

I have a 2008 4runner with 131k on it and I only got it about 8 months ago, started with 120k and it's just about mint, just needs alittle paint on the front bumper, I love it 👌🏻🤞🏻

It probably wasn't valve tap. These engines are known to have their header gaskets rust out. That's why it goes away when hot. It expands and seals the small holes making the ticking noise.
@@adamwright9790 no, the 4.7 was replaced with a 4.6 in the Tundra and other vehicles around 2010 or so.

Instead of valve tap it could be small exhaust leak that goes away when warm. But ad some product with oil change. Might help if it is valve tap. Man I love it. My best friend has one 2009 limited with 53k miles. Lol. V8 is badass and goes forever

That valve tap might be the exhaust manifolds being cracked. Mine does that on cold starts for a couple seconds until the manifold warms up

Have had two 4 Runners and a Tacoma, they are indestructible within reason. You can tear anything up if you try.
That’s why forerunners are so popular they’re just tough right out of the gate get you a 3 inch lift on it or something and put some bigger tires on it you’ll really go some places !! Are used to go for wheeling a lot but rock scare me because all it takes is one hit that oil pan or driveline and you’re stuck,
This gives me hope. I'm about to sign for a 2004 V8 sport 4runner with 148K miles on it. Have had a 02 Tacoma V6 for 13 years and its been the best vehicle I've ever owned, hoping this 4Runner lasts just as long.
Keep up with the timing belt changes and this v8 lasts forever! Plenty of Tundras with high miles on the same v8!

I got an 01 Tacoma with 436k miles on it. Now that I have a new daily driver shes becoming my toy I'm buying a 500 dollar parts truck and making cut off doors, baja suspension it's the stepside so all it needs is suspension and front flares and it's ready to rock

Only issue is torque converter shudder. But, if driven in 4th gear setting, no issue. Otherwise, toyota s only fix is to put a whole new transmission in.
i have a white 07 i got with 123,000.. its got 227,000 on her now.. runs like a champ!!
two weeks ago i got 2004 v8 with 182,000 for $6200 in great shape. preemptively replaced the timing belt. replacing cv axels that had a torn boot, and getting spark plugs, transmission fluid, and differential oil and it's 100% good to go. hopefully looking forward to another 182k miles 👌

Omg same here! When its on the 4 instead of drive it doesnt shoulder. And the shudder only happens in low speed on 2nd 3rd gear. Sp weird
@@vadimnesen8060 yes. For me, in drive, it happens between 23-48mph under light load and light acceleration. During torque lock up. But a little more throttle and the transmission downshifts and the shuddering stops. My mechanic put 2 tubes of shudder stop in the transmission and it helped a lot. Otherwise, it doesnt happen at all when set in 4th gear. Prior to the shudder fix, i would drive daily in 4th gear and only put it into drive while on the highway - over 50mph.

It went away. It can happen momentarily if an engine sits for a long time.

You're right. It definitely helped for the FJ... but the 4runner lost an inch of ground clearance by doing that and it just snagged on everything possible hahaha. I had to air back up to gain the clearance to go back down.
Dude, you're definitely not an idiot for this! I bought my 07 v8 limited 4runner new and have 465,000 miles on it with only maintenance stuff. Taking it to Toytec for lift in a couple weeks!

Get a v6, less maintenance more reliable and doesn’t have the timing belt.
Just replace the timing belt and your good to go for another 100,000 miles

Needs some Goodyear wrangler Duratracs and then try adding Archoil 9100 to your oil, will really help coat that old engine. Really helped my old 6.0 Powerstroke to not foul injectors. Just a helpful FYI...

I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner and I love the looks of it . I think 3rd gen 4Runner had the best look . They are like the XJ for Jeep Cherokee.

I hope this hasn't been asked and answered, but did you need anything else to do the suspension swap - Tacoma to 4Runner? Is it just "plug n play?"
Fronts spring and shock from the 3rd gen Tacoma is plug and play 2" lift. Rears won't fit without changing out the lower bushing.

In the video I was on stock springs, but eventually I put FJ Cruiser rear springs which fit right in and gave me 0.5" lift
Was curious I noticed you said you installed the front suspension off of the Tacoma but did you install the back shocks also. I have a set from a 2022 Tacoma and wasn’t sure if they would work. Thanks

My runner almost looks the same It's just a couple years newer and not the sport edition I got Limited. But I do live in the Rust Belt it's an uphill battle. I coat Everything underneath with a rust encapsulator every year It definitely helps

Hahah good eye. I bet you're the only one in the entire world that caught that! He had the duratrac as his spare but he started doing a 5 tire rotation so it moves around with his other 4 ko2s
