owned the 790, own the '21 890r, the 890r is way comfier (for me), love it , also CruiseControl and heated grips are a god sent (not available on the old 790) - also the old white of the 890r is superior to the new sheme
I've an 890R and a Aprilia V4 1100. The 890R isn't to powerful, feels slow next to my 1100. But the 1100 is over kill. The 890 you can just thrash the snot out if it all the time so it's arguably more fun. Frustration isn't fun, and the V4 can be ridden at half revs and still be going warp 9.
You hit the nail on the head - that’s the only true purpose of this well engineered/designed twisties machine!!! I got my son a 390 as a beginner bike…. This thing is absolutely amazing on canyon roads…. I often pick his over my 1200S Monster, the handling is stunning…. and 43hp is plenty if you know how to pick lines!!
OT. Seems to be more of the norm now. Bikes having what should be for that model class, are leaving out stuff, and making it an option. It's all about those Benjamin's.
It comes standard with wheelie control and lean sensitive traction control. Also my dealer is offering the bike with a tech pack for free so you then also get the quick shifter for free with that deal plus you get the race pack included in the tech pack all for free if you push for a great deal
OC What kind of pants are you wearing in the camera car footage? I just got my license a few weeks ago and I'm waiting to get my first bike. Super excited to go riding
I own a 890R and i absolutely love it! And i find it a bit sad that you where so enthusiastic about the quick shifter up and down on the 790 and on this bike you don't even highlight this awesome feature. I also dont understand why you agreed riding a 890 Duke R without a up & down quick-shifter since its quite unique still in 2022 having an up & down quick shifter on a bike. Why is that Chase? Also TRACK is the most powerfull mode, not SPORT.
Did they ever make an RC890 ? Seems like a perfect bike to make. I wish KTM made more variety of bikes and had color options beside Orange as the main color or orange as an accent color
OC. Yes, there is a quick shifter and an imu. You just have to pay for the tech pack to unlock the quick shifter and some other stuff. There's also supermoto abs, and cruise control, and other features.
Listen, I love motorcycles, and I appreciate the engineering and design from many manufacturers. not all obviously. I really like the middleweight Duke. But to come out with a 2022 Ev and charge a little bit more for a bike that has probably no actual difference from the previous model is bullshit. Ill go for the regular duke over the R. What would do well, is if they made the 890 Duke push out like 90 HP and then have the R pushing out the 121 HP. That actually is a meaningful distinction.
Think the brakes, susp, damper, tires, and extra pep in motor are well worth the 1k......I can get either and will go R route just for this reason Resale should be better as well
I've been riding KTMs for a while, and the "Neutral" is a thing. Yeah, you have to go to 2nd, and then find neutral. Becomes a habit if thats the main bike you ride. 890 R is such a nice bike, though. Curious about the 990 Duke (aka "Super" Scalpel) and the 1390 Super Duke R b/c all the Super DUke needed was an extra 50 CC and more horsepowers (190 HP).... Also, you should check out the 890 SMT, I think you'd dig that bike.
oc No opinion on the 890, just thinking about going with a used Duke 390 for about $4000 or a new Duke 200 for $4000. Either way, one of those may end up replacing my Grom. I can only plan for now since I have other things to pay for at the moment.
Man I'm dreaming about a duke 390 ...but everyone kee0 telling me ktm are SHIT when it comes to reliability...I'm used to Japanese bikes so I'm on the fence..might just get a mt03 or a mt07. I got a gsxr750 already. Oh decisions
OC. Watching this makes me wonder what the best middle eight naked is. No bike is perfect so what makes the best build. Does a fun 890 Duke R without a quick shifter outweigh An mt 09 sp that's just a little Too serious and less fun? Or something like an X Sr 900 the best, but no one talks about it.
Note: I don't have a duke... so take this opinion for what it is: Moral high ground position: you shouldn't be bawls deep in a dash while moving at highway speeds. What about that sounds safe? Moral high ground off: uh yeah, I am the idiot who still would want a mode button to switch on the fly. So. Yeah. They need to add a button. Ktm pleazzz!!!
Awesome bike! Definitely one I'm going to consider, but I am not a fan of that color way at all 🤢 maybe if they carried it through to the subframe/ rear fairing it would look better IMO. Anyways, great vid!
OC: Yes, all the "pay to play" features should be included at that price. My 2019 790 Duke came standard with the Track pack and all the features. The bike has the hardware installed. You just have to open your wallet so some dealership tech can unlock it on the diagnostic tool. The MT09 SP is such a better value. Hell, the BASE MT09 comes standard with a quickshifter. I love KTM bikes but I can't stand KTM
@@motorcycleartist my 790 had a few issues right off the start. Within the first 1000 miles: Brake light was stuck on, oil leak at the valve cover gasket, warped front brake rotors, horrible chain squeak, key failure error message, and an immobilizer failure which disabled, the quickshifter, abs, traction control, and MCS. After everything was fixed under warranty, I had no issues in the 6000 miles after.
@@motorcycleartist to be fair, a lot of 790/890 owners don't have any issues but all of the problems I've had with mine are well documented and fairly common. When the 890 came out, I was hopeful that all of the kinks of the 790 were worked out but they weren't. The 890s are having many of the same exact issues. i dont think any middleweights are using electronic suspension on 900cc naked bikes.......you have to go to 1000cc special edition sport bikes for that feature
Not being funny, but it looks too small for you. Don’t know if I’m getting too old but I wish ktm would tone it down a bit, then again I’m most probably not their market demographic.
It has the QS you have to unlock it via software :) once you buy the techpack you have all the riding aids you would ever dream about. It's a pay to play strategy. What I did I bought the the 2021 model new this year and I got a very good deal, cheaper that street triple RS. I come from inline4 Honda and I only can say this is night and day difference. Enjoy the ride. Before anyone saying something about japanese motorcycle, please not that who buys europen bike are buying them because they are not japanese. On realizability issue, guys Yamaha had last year more recalls than Ducati. ☺️
Next to new Harleys possibly the ugliest exhaust I’ve ever scene. That supposed to be a shiny trout or something. Toss that shit right in the parking lot
Folks, if you're thinking of getting this bike as your first KTM and are looking to swap out the exhaust you gotta take a look/listen to Austin Racing's stuff. The RS 22 exhaust is THE perfect sound to match how mean these bikes look. Nasty!!!
Went for a test ride a few months ago and decided to get an MT09 due to the more reasonable pricing. But man... All I can think about is the 890 and i think i will actually get one. The riding is so much more fun because to me it seems more like a Toy than a dangerous Big Bike
When it comes to long term reliability and maintenance, ktm is a headache compared to yammie. It’s a very cool and fun bike, but don’t expect 20k problem free miles 😅
@HahrtDood i own a kawasaki z900 with 30k miles and i’ve never had a single issue. Ktm might be a more exciting bike to ride but you get used to anything over time. You can put extra virgin olive oil in a japanese bike and it will still run smooth 😆
The fact remains that KTM charges extra to unlock the full potential of the bike. In my opinion, I wouldn't buy one without everything enabled. That makes it work like it's designed to work. Some people get upset about that but I consider it the cost of entry. If a person is put off by that, cool, plenty of other great bikes. Ride happy!
It's a shame that the original 790 came with QS + track mode included in the price, and they make you pay for it on the more exclusive 890R. For that reason alone, I will keep my 790 Duke with an Akra ;D
Just got my 2022 Duke 890R and its a great bike with the best handling of anything I have ever ridden. KTM is bloodsucking by charging you extra for quick shift and tunable settings - track pack, quick shift should be included and dealer charged me $475.00 to unlock it, yes its already on bike but locked! More money for cruise control and heated grips, stop calling it an R if these items are not included in retail price. The exhaust silencer is about as ugly as it gets, 2 bolts and it gets pitched, also factor in cash for a tail tidy - horrible stock plate mount and some sort of windscreen would complete the package. Bike retails for $12,400 but add another $2,000 for quick shifter and other parts, bike is quickly becoming expensive, great bike, not so great company.
The KTM's quick shifter and tech pack stuff is already installed on the bike. What you are paying extra for is a dealer code to unlock those 'options'. It is horsepucky. It needs to stop. It seems to me that at some point those 'options' were meant to be included with the bike, or they would not come pre-installed. Then some asshat in accounting or corporate said "Hey, wait... We could lock out access to some things on the bike and make people pay us extra to remove the locks we just put on there." Paying extra to unlock options that are already installed on the bike (quick shifter, modes, etc.) is the motorcycle world equivalent of on-disc DLC. What is next? In-ride purchases? After 150 miles on your new bike the tach and gas gauge disappear from the display and you get a pop-up asking if you enjoyed the 'Enhanced Display" limited trial and for only $15 a month these features can be added to your display full time.
It does have a 6 axis IMU but it's an add on....still has alot of great features but yeah it should come with tech pack standard......you can buy 2 390 dukes for price of this...... The brakes, steering damper, wheels, extra HP, suspension, and tires are well worth the 1k upcharge over std duke......so close to buying one.....a buddy who i used to race MX with owns a dealer and will sell me one without any upcharges.......cant find any Japanese bikes without additional markup right now.....MT 09 SP is 3k over sticker.......Which ends up being the same price as KTM......Jeez I could sell the KTM for what I pay for it.....decisions decisions Brakes and suspension are so important on a bike.... BTW you can adjust the front brake to be more or less sensitive with brembo stylemas.....believe bars and pegs are adjustable too as well as levers.....big bonus Beautiful bike in that color scheme
Oc: I just can’t believe a duke 390 has QS on it but the 890r doesn’t. That just seems odd to me. Regardless of the price or competition what is the purpose of putting it on the lower CC bike and leaving it off of your very own “performance” bike. Unless they are just trying to keep the 1290 superduke that’s much “better” than the 890r
All the hardware is there for the 6 axis IMU and the Quick Shifter. KTM just up charges for the tech pack which is just software. I agree it should all come standard as all the hardware including the hall effect sensor for the QS is there on EVERY bike. It literally takes the zero dollars for the dealer enable it through software. I requested the dealer to do this free of charge as I was barganing my 2021 Duke R. It costs them nothing to plug the computer in and enable it.
This bike was designed for twisty roads. Reviewing it on an interstate highway does not do it justice.

The torque is more instant compared to the MT10
OC: 100% agree, if it has an R on it should come standard with a QS.
what is qs
@@LizardMane quick shifter
It comes with a QS
owned the 790, own the '21 890r, the 890r is way comfier (for me), love it , also CruiseControl and heated grips are a god sent (not available on the old 790) - also the old white of the 890r is superior to the new sheme
OC. Quick question, does the chaseontwowheels discount work for all Mountain Motorsports or just the ones in north Georgia?

No matter how much orange they put on it, it’ll always sound like a dirt bike lol
Yea no quick shifter is one of the reasons I got the mt09sp
5'10 and you can flat foot? Put me off right away
KTM should really make a GT version of this platform similar to the 1290 Super Duke GT. A Mini GT
hmm, so something like 890 Adventure R?
There’s a 890 duke GT (it’s ugly asf)
@@Zakori That's just a KTM fan concept render. And yes it is ugly. KTM doesn't manufacture a GT version currently.
@@kugangles9860 no GT, but there's a GP. One letter difference. But it seems like GP is just another color scheme for the regular 890.
So if you could have only one would it be the mt09 sp, duke 890 r, the street rs, or the tuono 660 factory (which isnt out till next month)?
Street triple 765 is the best one by far
@@motorcycleartist great argument
The up and down buttons on the left hand side can be setup with Favourites, so you can easily access the mode menu.
Came here to find this comment :) I know those buttons are tunable, was just not sure if ride modes can be designated to be there.
Shame the test was only on interstate roads, this bike is built for the twisties with a rider who is about 150lbs.
Me thinks the guy that designed the exhaust used to work for peterbilt. Glad to see he is doing well.
😆😆😆
790 back in the day?.. they still have it.. The 990 was back in the day... its still more brutal than the 790 and 890
It comes standard with wheelie control and lean sensitive traction control.
Damn that blue is stunning. I can only imagine how much better it looks in person vs my shitty phone.
His bike didn't have quickshifter......its an add on feature.....Track mode is as well......you have to pay extra
Did they ever make an RC890 ? Seems like a perfect bike to make. I wish KTM made more variety of bikes and had color options beside Orange as the main color or orange as an accent color
There's a test mule RC890 that was spotted last year by some of the euro motorcycle mags. Or at least they think its an RC model.
Please do a first ride on the new XSR 900.
I hope he doesn't eventually but all it is, is an MT 09 with a slightly longer swing arm
OC. Yes, there is a quick shifter and an imu. You just have to pay for the tech pack to unlock the quick shifter and some other stuff. There's also supermoto abs, and cruise control, and other features.
I dont know. I've never had a bike below 1000ccs. I think this wouldn't be enough. I think I am going the GSX s1000 route.
Think the brakes, susp, damper, tires, and extra pep in motor are well worth the 1k......I can get either and will go R route just for this reason
Resale should be better as well
Looks nice & money pit. Lol
Exhaust makes me puke…
You do get into N when riding at speeds. Wouldn’t be a KTM without that. I’ve owned two KTMs and same thing.
I have issues finding neutral when stopping at a light or stop sign. It always jumps either 1st into 2 or vise versa.
I found if you give it a bit of throttle it will go into N.
Got the same bike! It brings out the hooligan mode as soon as you twist the throttle
Bike should have a quick shifter included, and the color scheme is awful. Looks like fun but man it's ugly!
Blasphemer.... stopped right at your M G statement.... Why bring God into a stupid bike review?
Love your videos keep it up and thank you for making this video
Bro, I'm trying to get on a Mt09 and your keeping me thinking about another Ktm lol
I'll definitely remember that. Appreciate you man
oc
No opinion on the 890, just thinking about going with a used Duke 390 for about $4000 or a new Duke 200 for $4000.
Just like my 390 Duke. Doesn’t like neutral either and I’ve got to do the same exact thing to get it into neutral.
That air compressor is dope! I need one and it’s the perfect gift to motorcycle buddies!
Note: I don't have a duke... so take this opinion for what it is:
Moral high ground position: you shouldn't be bawls deep in a dash while moving at highway speeds. What about that sounds safe?
Moral high ground off: uh yeah, I am the idiot who still would want a mode button to switch on the fly. So. Yeah. They need to add a button. Ktm pleazzz!!!
And clean up that tail section
Awesome bike! Definitely one I'm going to consider, but I am not a fan of that color way at all 🤢 maybe if they carried it through to the subframe/ rear fairing it would look better IMO. Anyways, great vid!
I agree the color scheme is awful.
Are they reliable or am I going to live at the mechanic shop?? I'm use to riding Japanese bikes..
@@djf7380 thanks for that valuable information...Looks like I'll probably just get a mt03 or mt07.. the mt03 needs a few mods but I like the looks
KTM management and quality control is a dumpster fire but hey, when the bikes work, they're great!
@HahrtDood I'll stick with Suzuki..got a gsxr750, in 3 years the only issue I had- had to replace the gear shift arm..cost $185 with parts n labor..Ktm make some amazing looking bikes but that's about it..noooo thanks, lol
I don’t know how I feel about the names “duke” or “super duke”,.. 🤔
When I’ve eaten to much Panda Express I end up taking a “super dook”,.. I hope that puts it into prospective 😂
i dont think any middleweights are using electronic suspension on 900cc naked bikes.......you have to go to 1000cc special edition sport bikes for that feature
Not being funny, but it looks too small for you. Don’t know if I’m getting too old but I wish ktm would tone it down a bit, then again I’m most probably not their market demographic.
quickshifter is installed but not activated and still costs 11,000 euros too expensive for what it offers compared to mt09 even xsr 900 yamaha!
currently have a Duke 200, awaiting the release of the 890 R this year in India, will definetly pick one up
So this or the MT-09 SP, what do you pick Chase?
HELL. NO. If you're putting R on a bike in 2022 for that price? A quick shifter is just expected.
Put my order in February and still waiting here in the UK 😔. Dealership is being slack with any kind of update.
Same here, the ETA should be april/may, but no one knows it for sure (i live in the Netherlands)
@@dannygernaat9961 Fingers crossed for us both. Chases video has made the wait even harder as the bike looks amazing in the new colour.
@@bumblebee_tuna that colour is amazing, much better than the white version
If you're referring to crank specs. It actually has 121 hp and 73 ft lbs. Off by 10 lol
ChaseIwillFindSomethingToComplainAboutOn2Wheels 🤣🤣🤣
Folks, if you're thinking of getting this bike as your first KTM and are looking to swap out the exhaust you gotta take a look/listen to Austin Racing's stuff. The RS 22 exhaust is THE perfect sound to match how mean these bikes look. Nasty!!!
I have the dual RS22s on mine.. super sick. Only took 16 weeks of waiting after dropping $1600 though XD
Ordered them for mine as well
How does it stack against the mt 09 sp?
OC, sometimes it's adding complexity for complexity's sake and then missing the point all together
I agree R should come with quickshifter+
I can't stress enough how horrible a duke is don't buy move on to other brands , there's wire issues , displays issues etc
Ride happy!
It's has quick shifter but it's in a teach pack 1200 usd
17:50 « this bike has competitors that have electronic suspension. » ok? Name one.
Why not testing this bike in the twisties as its a naked .
It's a shame that the original 790 came with QS + track mode included in the price, and they make you pay for it on the more exclusive 890R. For that reason alone, I will keep my 790 Duke with an Akra ;D
I mean that’s a solid argument
Who agree that the duke 690 790 and 890 should at least have that beast look that the duke 200 bs4 bs6 have.
We could lock out access to some things on the bike and make people pay us extra to remove the locks we just put on there."
Paying extra to unlock options that are already installed on the bike (quick shifter, modes, etc.) is the motorcycle world equivalent of on-disc DLC.
The brakes, steering damper, wheels, extra HP, suspension, and tires are well worth the 1k upcharge over std duke......so close to buying one.....a buddy who i used to race MX with owns a dealer and will sell me one without any upcharges.......cant find any Japanese bikes without additional markup right now.....MT 09 SP is 3k over sticker.......Which ends up being the same price as KTM......Jeez I could sell the KTM for what I pay for it.....decisions decisions
Brakes and suspension are so important on a bike....
BTW you can adjust the front brake to be more or less sensitive with brembo stylemas.....believe bars and pegs are adjustable too as well as levers.....big bonus
Beautiful bike in that color scheme
I like the bike but that hideous exhaust I'm already waiting for an aftermarket
Mehhh i started on this as my first bike.. i did ride dirt bikes and race quads brfore this though
KTM ruining their bikes with the blue 😭
Black on orange is clean but blue is 🤮
Oc: I just can’t believe a duke 390 has QS on it but the 890r doesn’t. That just seems odd to me. Regardless of the price or competition what is the purpose of putting it on the lower CC bike and leaving it off of your very own “performance” bike. Unless they are just trying to keep the 1290 superduke that’s much “better” than the 890r
It lacks the good looking fairings of the 390 200 and 125.
Which middleweight naked bike has electronic suspension???????????
All the hardware is there for the 6 axis IMU and the Quick Shifter. KTM just up charges for the tech pack which is just software. I agree it should all come standard as all the hardware including the hall effect sensor for the QS is there on EVERY bike. It literally takes the zero dollars for the dealer enable it through software. I requested the dealer to do this free of charge as I was barganing my 2021 Duke R. It costs them nothing to plug the computer in and enable it.
