  • In this video, Oppy and I discuss arguments for and against the existence of God, the problem of evil, definitions of atheism, what it would take for Oppy to be convinced of God's existence, and much more! I really enjoyed talking with Oppy; such a cool guy, very down to earth.

Great interview. Thank you for bringing Dr. Oppy on. If you're looking for another good Atheist philosopher, you should reach out to C.M. Lorkowski.

Every Australian philosopher of religion should ensure that Vegemite gets into the argument somewhere.

The argument-project sounds like something very well needed. At least I will rejoice when it will become available.

I would love to hear what's Dr. Oppy's personal motivation on why he studies philosophy of religion. He is so motivated to get his arguments right (...which I love).
I would love to hear what drives him, given that he must think he is a speck of dust in an endless universe.
Why be motivated to spend your life on 'believes'?...does he think it is ultimatly meaningless?...given that humanity will not exist forever.

51:19 I think Graham does not accurately represent the position of the “New Ir-religionists” / “New Atheists”
Graham argues that we should spend our effort on things that matter - not worry so much about what people believe. The New Atheist agree that we should focus on what matters, but argue that many of the most important problems in the world persist due to faith-based beliefs. Unlike other beliefs, faith-based beliefs are provided a special status; a faith based belief is practically immune to criticism in our political discourse - and that’s a problem that hinders our ability to address our other most important issues.

Well that's being said by a guy who admitted he lowers his epistemic bar when dealing with his claim on god

@@jmike2039 Nope. He did not. He clarified what he meant - he was using a euphemism or expression of speech and the atheist youtube community made a ton of assumptions. You had to let the interlocutor clarify their meaning, and that was not done and it ran wild.

He gave an off the cuff response - which he later clarified.
What you are doing right now is gaslighting.
Do not do this to your wife/husband/signifcant other. If someone clarifies an open ended statement with XYZ. Then they meant XYZ. Please stop gaslighting. @@Maximex123

If we are just going to posit that god has reasons to allow some evil, then it's a normative notion that the world ought be the way. It's not as if gods being tripped up on his way to creation; if he has prevailing reasons to allow or permit evil, then there isn't any categoric evils. All things considered the world ought possess those injustices. It doesn't matter what reason you give, I'll grant any one of them; it just means that it ought be done, lest god be irrational doing things that ought not be done against his will.
