Take a good look kiddies, this is a true artist. Unfortunately they don't make models like this anymore. Thank you for sharing with us Joni ❤️ ...the world is a more beautiful place because of you
"If you listen to that music and see yourself it'll probably make you cry and you learn something about yourself and now you're getting something out of it"... wow.
Joni, I met you in a funky little natural foods store in the spring of 1976 in Boulder CO. I found out later that you were on a journey through America and Canada getting inspiration for Hejira. You came up to me and stood very close to me looking deep into my eyes. You looked exactly like Joni Mitchell on the cover of the Clouds album. You were flirtatious and friendly. I was tongue-tied and in awe of you. You asked me if I knew you. I was rude because I was so star struck. I told you that you were mistaken. You asked me if I was sure I didn't know you. I said: "Yes, you are mistaken." You looked at me with those heartbreakingly blue Scorpio eyes and said: "Well, that's just too bad then." And then you walked away. I thought that a beautiful blonde woman who looked exactly like Joni Mitchell being flirtatious with me in Bouder CO must be my imagination. Later on when I got home from that dream-like encounter the phone rang and a friend said: "Joni Mitchell is in town visitng Robben Ford."
The interviewer clearly is unfamiliar with her work and doesn’t know a great deal beyond what can be found on Google. I’d like to see her have a genuine conversation with an intelligent woman of a certain age.
I have watched this video a number of times over the past 9 years...I just love her style and her story...and pretty much everything about the way she thinks. Then, every time I do, I get on a whole new "Joni music kick" again for a while afterwards. Her recent performance at the Newport Folk Festival (2022) just bowled me over with delight. I never thought we'd get a chance to see her rockin' out on stage again...To see her doing so...at 79 years old....after all of the challenges she's faced...and doing it with a big, authentic smile on her face....Words just can't express what a wonderful sight !
If I read the comments first, I wouldn't have sacrificed almost two hours with this, but I didn't and it was great. Revealing, Fascinating. I loved it.
'In the rooms the women come and go, talking of Michelangelo...do I dare to eat a peach?....do I dare to disturb the universe?' - It was the poet, T.S. Eliot, Joni was trying to pin down. Joni Mitchell is sublime, 100% all there and still with so much to share, to teach. She is her own person, her own muse and she has been one of few to to disturb the universe and we are all the better for it. Thank you Jian Ghomeshi & Joni Mitchell for this gift of an interview, void of muddy waters, crystal clear and full of melodious thunder!
When I was art college in 83 I heard a Joni Mitchell album and I thought wow, who is this song bird? I think she is a rare find in this world both early on and now...I believe she ploughs her own furrow...and when we do that creatively we become misunderstood...people want to label you, misrepresent you...we live in a tick box world...she has influenced so many people...but she's not doing it to win friends...she is a wonderful bright star and an inspiration...a strong women, in what is still a man's world...she is a trail blazer and a wonder - it strikes me that she has kept her curiosity ...and continues to flutter her wings...in this chaotic world...we have been fortunate to feel those ripples...long may it be. Thank you for you honesty...listening to this interview ...it strikes me you truly extoll the power of having a voice...song/stories/love of life...hardship....resilience...preserving the human spirit...our natural world... Like Rachel Carson, she has been a quiet ambassador...
This guy jumps to another question and another topic far to quickly when Joni is talking and gives the impression that he's not really interested in her answers but cares more about his next question...Joni is amazing 🔥
I think he did okay as an interviewer but definitely was not up to her mental ability and didn't play off the answers she gave but kept to his original script no matter how interesting it was getting. And he kept interrupting her because he couldn't see how it related to his question... but she took this on such a different journey than he wanted it to go in and I love her for it. Thanks for this interview
If anyone seemed to be someone to look up to it has been Joni Mitchell. Thank you Joni Mitchell for knowing that sensitivity in a person is precious but not recognized in Western culture and for knowing that celebrity is not a thing to be coveted. Love her not just the music.
I love the honesty of this interview. And because Joni sees the world through a different lens to most of us, - well it is just beautiful. She is not like anyone else - she is unique. What a blessing.
This is the third time I've watched this interview over the past few years and I like it better each time! Joni's characterization of the Baby Boomers (of which I am one) is as concisely brilliant as is humanly possible. Her explanation is the nutshell portrait of what was, why it was that, and what it ultimately led to. It is a rare pleasure indeed to encounter such a genuine person, someone so unafraid to be who she is, and someone so driven to do the best that she can do. Although I've never met her in person I can't help but think that we are dear friends...
How could you possibly be "too young" to "pull off" something that you had written yourself that had come from YOUR soul and YOUR experiences? You've probably lived a thousand lifetimes. I have been told over the course of my life that I'm so much like Joni Mitchell... even by my own Mother and sister - we were all raised in a family of vocalists, musicians, writers, arrangers and painters. I assure you that I always felt complimented and very well complimented. It wasn't only my appearance, but even as I watch this interview, we have twin thought processes. I've also been told I think too much. For this I'm grateful - I know you are too, Joni. Thank you for being a part of my life.
I have always loved her music, her incredible artwork, but most of all her wonderful spirit. A genius, an original- never will there be another like her.
Wonderful interview. For years and years I have admired her and knew nothing about her. A real creative person with no big ego to have to deal with. So enlightening.
I think Jian Ghomeshi did an outstanding job. Not easy interviewing a *legend.* He missed a few small things that I would have asked; "Did you have a strict upbringing?" "Did you grow up catholic- from her Irish mother's side." "Were you a wild kid as a teenager?" "Did you like to drive fast?" Things like that.
thank you Joni for giving this mother of 8 many songs to joyfully sing in her kitchen!! (if you watch to the end, you will get it ;)I LOVE Joni, have since I was a teen.
i love you, joni mitchell. did her spotlight when she played my school in new york in 1969. she never moved an inch so my job was quite easy. i always wondered about that. but her performing style did loosen up as her career developed. she's great.
She is so wise, intelligent, humble and classy. This interview was very interesting and informative - - I can see myself watching this again and again.
what an amazingly thoughtful woman. I knew she was intelligent by listening to her song lyrics but it was amazing to hear her talk about her legacy so open and honestly. I wish there were more interviewers like this.
I enjoyed this very much, what a gem of a human being. But I never knew the depth of her intellect and insights as i saw here.. so sharp. Truly remarkable. Thank you for the music, Joni.
Whether you agree with her politics or not...she is one of the great observational thinker artists of the past few decades. I'm not sure how many of our social media, reality tv, smart phone generations can fully comprehend where she is coming from in a relatable way.
So glad to hear Joni Mitchell actually speak nothing cut out so she could get her point across along with straitened out so many misconceptions. This is the best interview I have ever seen. Thank you
I'm 41yrs old. I got into Joni twenty something years ago. The first album I bought of hers was Ladies of the Canyons.. Morning Morgan Town sold me instantly. I was taken by her right away. She blew me away just as someone like Shawn Lane etc etc did upon my first hearings. Thank you for being Joni❤
As a child, Joni Mitchell was my strongest influence in becoming a singer - songwriter. She still inspires me!!! Joni, I wish you peace and health!!!!! Much love, Coreen
One of the greatest musicians of all time and certainly one of the greatest musicians of the modern age. Joni's music has touched almost everyone in the world in one way or another.
In 1967 I was 17, I was in a rock band, had an MBG sports car, I thought I was hot stuff then a buddy of mine said just listen to this and played me an early Joni album, I was pole-axed by her songwriting, singing and wonderful Guitar and Piano accompaniment. In that same year I also saw Jimmy Hendrix live, even though I was the local young hot stud guitar player in my area, I was just not ready to see Jimmy in his Prime, I went home and put away my guitar and said forget it. Who helped me through this major life crisis ?? Joni of course. Later in life I turned my wife on to Joni and she turned me on to Prince. Joni please get better soon, even though you are not playing or singing anymore I still think Shine is your finest album ever !!
You were the depths of my soul when I was younger. I sang your songs daily, living in Oregon, alone w/my first child. I got angry w/you upon learning you gave up your baby. It was a heart crushing blow to my idea of idol. Since I have grown more experienced in life, I have no right to be judgemental of anyone. We are now at peace, my dream idol & I! Ha, ha! I can fully enjoy your music & art, for the rest of my life! Gracious gratitude dear Lady. You will always be part of me.
She said "birds that come to me to die..." and that went right over the interviewer's head so high and fast he never had a chance. Talk about being in over your head.
@@skinnerman100 argumentum ad hominem. If I'm an idiot why did my comment get 28 upvotes ? I agree with Susan Carroll below: "As a journalist, he's doing a fine job of trying to fit her into a category which she by her genius simply defies. " Susan and I have a lot of company in this thread. The interviewer is no match for JM. speak to the issue... or prove that you are no better at Internet commenting than the interviewer is at interviewing
@@larrytate1657 you got a timestamp for him trying to get her to be clear about ''birds coming to me to die" ? Joni Mitchell: [lyrical genius] Interviewer: "could you be more clear ?"
I agree. My 11 year old astutely said, "If everyone embraced their inner weirdness it would be the new normal. Who wants to be normal and boring." I was impacted greatly by Joni and grew up listening to her. Blue and My old Man deeply affected me as a child. I admire her greatly
@@kodokanshiai2143 He had a job at 19, with 15 employees, he has finished his Associates degree and now heading on to a Bachelors. He wants to teach. Considering many young people, he is remarkably self motivated and driven, which makes me happy. So many people don't realize skill or proficiency in anything doesn't happen overnight. Everyone has to pay their dues and work their way up. It's unfortunate, but many people seem to live as perpetual victims. They don't grasp that for life to be different tomorrow, you need to change something today. I've lived through some very hard times, probably why I resonate with the Blue album so much. Many times I felt like she was singing my thoughts
In 1973 I went into a record store and joni’s album was being played. Suddenly I felt like I was exposed and naked and way too vulnerable in that public place. Her music spoke to my soul.
An acquaintance attended art school classes with her. In 1985 he told me "she couldn't decide if she wanted to paint pictures or sing them." Good observation.
Fascinating interview of an artist. Most interesting and tragic was the abuse she suffered as a young person trying to make her way in the world, how poverty and lack of support forced her to give up her child. Thank you Ms. Mitchell for this honest recounting of your life. It's horrible that women are stilling going through this type of experience, but with the pill in most western countries, much, much less than what she experienced in her youth.
After all these years, and my deep connection to the heart of you, Joni...I appreciate so much your and Mr. Ghomeshi's time giving me a deeper understanding of your wonderful body of work, heart, and soul..There are truly no words to express the profound moments I discovered or related to through your gifts to us...You are and have been a major role model in my life and the deep emotions I have discovered within my own heart through you sharing yours are forever with me...I treasure this time I had here with you..Thank you always and always.
Integrity is a hard thing to define but an easy thing to experience. Joni clearly displays it and the interviewer did a decent job of bringing it out for us to see. Although she didn't actually say it, my guess is Joni is one of those rare souls who understands that the job of a poet is not to state an idea or emotion and then stake a claim on the words and their meaning, but rather to put thoughts out there via a written, sung, or spoken text and let folks experience and interpret them themselves using their own life experiences to do the translating. I love this lady and just wish she would come to Maine so I could take her for a ride in my boat...like her I am addicted to water and nature!
So grateful to have come across this interview. I listened to it on the radio when it was first done. So glad to see you joni just recently honored at the Newport Festival. Singing and playing guitar again. I too am astrologically cursed and in recent years to see the world on a micro and macro level go down the rabbit hole into the abyss has been frightening and very lonely for me on a personal note. Hearing joni speak these undeniable truths today gives me hope that many people who have listened to her music and admired her art for all these years are still communicating and messaging. Thankyou Joni Mitchell. Ps. Too bad we had to endure listening and seeing ghomeshi.
Such a beautiful artist. She is an old soul. Ahead of her times in the sixties, and versatile in the following decades until now. God bless you Joni Mitchell. I will always love you, your art and your music.
And I have to confess that I was moving away from her after Court and Spark. Now while I catch up....I am having a wonderful experience. Joni was way ahead of us. We had to grow into where she went. I am finding now that when I went away...I had missed some of the greatest work and transformation of this trail blazer! But, at least I found her again and am able to discover all I missed. What a lucky break for us to have been part of her lifetime! She will go on forever! And bring our times with her art and freedom! I know this honoring is repetitious...but surely we have "touched souls"!
I LOVE JONI. As for the interviewer, he needs to get his tongue out of his ears. SO many gems Joni was beginning to expound upon, only to be interrupted by him.
It would have been an even more amazing and revelatory interview had the interviewer have a better and clearer understanding of where Joni Mitchell's coming from. Luckily,(through some very dumb questions) , she forged through - generously- with her life , her art , philosophy and her singular spiritual BEING. Thank you Joni !You made my night!
She was brilliant. I read in 2021, she is 77 years old and worth 130 million. At one time, before she bought her homes, especially the one in Laurel Canyon, she was worth 245 million. Unbelievable. Her wealth and fame seems to be a surprise to her. Loved her so much.
What a pleasure to hear the brilliance of Joni Mitchell and the journey of her life. The interviewer was also gracious and shared the joy of this experience with honor. Thanks so much for this!
To me, Joni Mitchell appears to be a self-posessed, intelligent, very thoughtful, and mature woman. She doesn't apologize or acquiesce for anything, hastening to "correct" or rather redefine, any misimpressions or inadequate understandings of EXACTLY what she feels, thinks, and intends to convey. Ms. Mitchell is therefore, highly refined, and as is quite often a characteristic of highly creative and imaginative persons, she openly reveals her tendency to be irritable. I appreciate and admire this artist, but at the same time, I would find it challenging to converse with her easily - and might even feel a bit intimidated in her presence. She inherently commands respect and won't put up with any bullshit or frilly, lacy, meritless chatter. She's been there done that. An exchange with Joni is an EVENT - this is a person that is as illuminated as a rainbow, yet as wise and deep as a spritual coumselor, but her soul is also touched by the little things in life as well - a butterfly, "vapor trails", paint color palettes and especially her alone time, for example. So many things are very significant to her - her love of words alone - man, it's a bit daunting taking all of her in. At 60, I still marvel at the paintings she creates with her words and music. What an intriguing gem. Really, there's no one on Earth like Joni Mitchell. I'm thankful that I've been alive and have had the opportunity to see, hear, and experience all that she has given of herself; I'm a more compassionate and artistic person because of HER gifts.
Oh, how I would just love to sit and talk to her....I admire her so much...she was my salvation in the deepest dark part of my life. I will forever be grateful for her and her songs.
Joni Mitchell .A very intriguing woman. This was a great glimpse into her ideology and concepts. Such a strong humble sincere Lady and creative artist with a great sense of humor.......
Oh dear... the interviewer cut her off in parts I desperately wanted to hear. Thank goodness she knows when she’s been cut off and morphs the silly question into her unfinished answer
Joni and I drink from the same well. I write/songs and poetry and paint and draw. And that's the same well. Now I'm not that artist she is...but what inspiration she has provided to so many artists.
that is one of my favourite joni songs. the story she told about writing it on intimate & interactive (much music) touched me also as i too grew up in foster care. the whole album "night ride home" is amazing. a treasure and so is" turbulent indigo". cheers.
After seeing this interview I am reminded of something said by many (even by Joni Mitchell herself once): you should never confuse the Artist with the Art. Her art is extraordinary and magnificent.
I've listen to Joni forever I saw her in 1974 & again in 1976. I've related to all her music. All genres. I've love and admired her. So sorry she had that stroke. I hope shes ok. Such an intelligent genius. Art & music
Joni Mitchell is the best pop musician so far. She is an ARTIST... all CAPS.. Creating is her thing. Looking at things from every angle is her thing. She is a complete empath, and actress, as well as a beautiful song bird. Her creative guitar work is amazing. Her pianistic forms remind me of my own, which makes me think we had similar learning experiences. I am a theatre composer, but I always wanted to create a musical revue of her work for Broadway. She chose to be honest and it scared some producers, but it also created an audience that will continue to grow forever.. She is now able to be seen as a new kind of "classical artist", and she will always stand out as an ORIGINAL.
"Honor died with WWII." I wish he would have continued with that line of questioning. That was a golden opportunity she gave him.
Yes, it was a great line. Someone else just wasn’t up to the task at that moment.
She is humble and great. She is brilliant, clear sighted, critical and insightful. The interviewer is unfortunate. But Joni shines!
"The trick is: if you listen to that music and you see me, you're not getting anything out of it, but if you listen to that music and you see yourself, it will probably make you cry and you'll learn something about yourself, and now you're getting something out of it. they do - every generation is imbued with artist of her stature - but pop culture is not inclined towards it currently due to a multitude of reasons
"If you listen to that music and see yourself it'll probably make you cry and you learn something about yourself and now you're getting something out of it"... wow.
X 1,000,000. The ONLY artist in the world not only to say it, but MEAN it.
Where is that part please help
"Now we are communicating ". ❤

Joni is of another level. Best we can do is try to keep up and maybe get to understand.....if we get lucky.
Very happy to hear she is writing her autobiography
"if they honor you wrong, it's dumb if they honor you right, it's inspiring".
Even that thought is poetic.
What a gift this woman has. Not only can she sing and play guitar so wonderfully well, but she can paint just as well. A creative genius!
Integrity. Eloquence. Fulfilled talent? Painter. Poet. Composer. Musician. Philosophical. Honest. Brave & beautiful. Joni Mitchell - in our time. Thank you for posting this!

The greatest honor to be able to meet her let alone sit down with her for a talk
Hearing Joni talk about the energy and our sensitives really confirms her intuitiveness. I didn't know she had been soooo ill.
Chatty Cathy , what disease dose she have? She never gave it a name. Thanks if you know the answer and can get back to me.

"Dame" Mitchell, I have loved you since "Clouds" and I will love you until the end of time!
She is so over my head, love her!
She said "birds that come to me to die..." and that went right over the interviewer's head so high and fast he never had a chance. Talk about being in over your head.
Your obviously someone who knows everything.... idiot
@@skinnerman100 argumentum ad hominem.
If I'm an idiot why did my comment get 28 upvotes ? I agree with Susan Carroll below:
"As a journalist, he's doing a fine job of trying to fit her into a category which she by her genius simply defies. "
Susan and I have a lot of company in this thread. The interviewer is no match for JM.
speak to the issue... or prove that you are no better at Internet commenting than the interviewer is at interviewing
He’s just trying to get her to be clear and not speak in riddles. Get over it. It’s not over his head.
@@larrytate1657 you got a timestamp for him trying to get her to be clear about ''birds coming to me to die" ?
Joni Mitchell: [lyrical genius]
Interviewer: "could you be more clear ?"
I agree. My 11 year old astutely said, "If everyone embraced their inner weirdness it would be the new normal. Who wants to be normal and boring." I was impacted greatly by Joni and grew up listening to her. Blue and My old Man deeply affected me as a child. I admire her greatly
You had a smart 11 year old. How are they doing now ?
After all these years She is still beautiful and expressive.
Cigs have taken a toll ...
Was same with Mary Travers ...
Yes isnt that the truth!
Totally agree - we could have well done without his interruptions and distraction.
❤
I love her paintings! I've been to Saskatchewan and she captures the feeling perfectly!!
OMG....flick the ash off that cigarette!! I kept watching and waiting for it to fall.... She finally put the damn thing out.
She's wonderful.
Honest thinker.
Honest speaker.

Thanks for posting.
What an amazing woman. Her depth, clarity and talent and humility are inspiring keep going trail blazer
“Birds that came to me to die!” No one else thinks like the wonderful, original Joni. Xx
Yes! Her love of nature! Empathy!
Joni will be me favourite forever because she crossed over from folk to jazz and did it so beautifully. I would have never thought she still smokes...
Really messed with her looks, cigs will do that ...
Is anyone else completely following this woman’s train of thought? I can’t believe that she exists and it’s a gift.
I love how this interviewer interjects when Joni is half way through answering the question. Great interviewing.
Oh, how I would just love to sit and talk to her....I admire her so much...she was my salvation in the deepest dark part of my life. I will forever be grateful for her and her songs.
Joni Mitchell .A very intriguing woman. This was a great glimpse into her ideology and concepts. Such a strong humble sincere Lady and creative artist with a great sense of humor.......
underrated... a great poet-musician... no one comes close to her with today's artists.. a shame
She is very forthcoming, and tells her truth beautifully.
Oh dear... the interviewer cut her off in parts I desperately wanted to hear. Thank goodness she knows when she’s been cut off and morphs the silly question into her unfinished answer
you gave us so much Joni... a real brave and authentic role model for women... even if she doesnt call herself a feminist...she is one!
Joni and I drink from the same well. I write/songs and poetry and paint and draw. And that's the same well. Now I'm not that artist she is...but what inspiration she has provided to so many artists.
that is one of my favourite joni songs. the story she told about writing it on intimate & interactive (much music) touched me also as i too grew up in foster care. the whole album "night ride home" is amazing. a treasure and so is" turbulent indigo". cheers.
Joni is certainly being proven correct about the dangers and "terrible consequences" of the internet and digital technology. We're living them.
Art & music
I've LOVED the "Blue" album since it came out... I was 15 and connected; it moves me as much today.
