    An old guy told me this once…. All retaining walls eventually fail. Give it a fighting chance by adding a drainage pipe behind it.

      Our neighborhood in downtown Raleigh, NC, has a lot of them and quite a few have already bowed or buckled somehow someway. I know because I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for 68 years. They are small ones, so I guess if the small ones do that, well…….

      I'd say: look at how the Portuguese does it. There are a lot of old properties with terraces in their hills and mountains that have withstood the test of time. Granted, there might be a difference in the amount of rain compared to the us, but they got this figured out.

    The key to any retaining wall is the drainage behind the wall. Drainage pipes, Gravel, etc. Good luck.

  • @peterdement
    @peterdement Місяць тому +24

    First course should be over excavated to create a key way for the boulders placed 2 to 3 feet below the finish grade to prevent future catastrophic sloughing. Consider drain lines behind wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

    Cats. When you get a mouse or something else which is part of her food then they share it to say thank you. Remember that. I had so many cats in my life. Got them from the shelter or mother nature, gave them food and a place to sleep and warm up, gave them unconditional love and they all always brought me parts of her food like mouses or birds. They were always part of my thought of a family.

    You are doing quite well with the creation of the rock wall. It's got to be a bit difficult being Michelangelo painting the roof of the Sistine Chapel and having the monks telling you what would be better. 👍👍👍

    The dead animals in your excavator are definitely gifts. Cats do regularly bring gifts of one sort or another to their favourite people, particularly if they see the person going out of their way to do something for them.

    You may have mentioned... What are the plans for the drive, now that boulders are used for the walls? I thought initially that the huge boulders in front of the fence was for fence safety during snow plow season. During "cattle breakout" the boulders seemed to deter running along fences.
    Having those steps near the house entrance seemed logical... Two sets of stairs is even more useful. Really. Liike the improvements. When the run off was being redirected, I thought "perfect place for a dry creek bed" ... Maybe a small pond with a solar pump to listen to while sitting on the front porch... Just thinking.

    I think you should double down and do another terrace plus some drainage with a pipe and gravel on the back of each terrace - then you really won't have to mess with it again - you have the equipment and it won't take you too long, add some granite steps and wildflowers and you will have a lot more space in the back yard plus good security against flooding - easy digging - you should consider adding on and then getting back to back 40 road and construction. It looks good but may not be enough - the grade on the terace(s) is critical to get outcome you want and another step terrace will be added insurance and give you more space for patio/firepit/gardens.pergola etc

    JudithB That is going to look so nice and keep the hill out of your house!!! We have huge rocks under the cliff and some just under the soil in the yard that keep the yard and houses on top of the cliff. I have used some smaller boulders in my flower beds, and a lot of flag stone for walkways and patios. Smaller stuff fills holes in the driveways, so moving and re using rock stuff is the name of the game here!! LOL!!
