I had the pleasure of meeting Lachie Stewart today at Loch Lomond, my daughter and i spoke to him for almost an hour about boats and his athletics career and what a lovely man he is, a true gentleman 🥇
Yet another absolutely top class commentary by David Coleman. So knowledgeable and generous in his ability to talk about EVERY contender in a race, no matter what nationality. And for someone who, according to Coleman, was not renowned for a sprint finish, Lachie Stewart switched on the turbo booster in the last 100.
Aye...Coleman was indeed an iconic commentator, but I regularly tune into YT archive footage...and it's quite noticeable just how often he got things wrong as races concluded. Maybe that's part of the quality of his commentating and adds some real drama!
Had never heard of him until I saw a BBC article on August 25, 2020 that said he had unfortunately had part of his leg amputated. He's doing well and will always be great Scottish sporting legend. Wonderful clip. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a million for posting this. I was there that day with my mammy and it lashed down with rain. It was fantastic: Scottish weather and a brilliant Scottish victory.
I remember watching this on tv. And many years later I remember watching a girl called Liz Lynch (who I'd never heard of) winning Commonwealth Gold in Scotland also in I think a 10000 metres race. Of course she became more famously known as Liz McColgan. Great memories.
Great to finally see this clip!! Lachie was the starter at the Barrhead 10k couple of years back, at the time I only knew of Iain Stewart who I discovered first from the (very popular on youtube) munich olympic 5k clips. What atmosphere in the stadium!!.......last time i was in meadowbank (it's the start for the edinburgh half marathon) I couldn't help think of this race, the 5k at the same games and ovett winning in 1986, as I told anyone who'd listen. thanks again
It's not strange at all. The reason is we haven't got the runners anymore. We had quite a few runners who cracked 28 mins for 10,000m and they were great championship runners to boot - ditto for 5k. That's why it's never mentioned. Just heard that Stewart has had lower part of a leg amputated.
One of my oldest sporting memories. I can still recall jumping up and down with my mother in front of the telly and roaring for Lachie. Still fantastic to watch and brings a lump to the throat.
Respect to Ron Clarke too, at 33 knowing it was likely his last major championship meet, must've thought he was in with a royal chance with 200 to go, but Stewart was much too quick in the end.
Lackie Stewart is my full cousin - my maiden name is Linda Livingstone, my father was Daniel Livingstone 1901-1055 married to Eliz.(Bessie) Henderson. Sheila Stewart married Danny Corson and had son Andrew. Lachie's father was Rodderick and his mother was Annie Livingstone b. 1897. Who is your father Philip? I stay at 29b Eskside West, Musselburgh (Fisherrow), EH21 6PP

never tire seeing this
Interesting side note, the guy who helped rake the long jump pit was none other than future 1980 Olympic 100 meter champion Alan Wells.

I was there with my dad mind you I was only 5yrs old so watching this has brought back that great day with my dad who died 2yrs ago. Miss him
I remember this and isn't it strange how no one ever talks about that era and the great great runners that were around

Brilliant
Loved Lachie Stewart.
Games finished with the 5000m. Ian Stewart from McCafferty and Keino in an epic.
Some man.
