  • In this video, I go over how to download Power BI Desktop on a Mac.
    Power BI is an industry level tool for business intelligence, but it's limitations on a Mac can create trouble for many people looking to use it outside of work, or even for those within companies that are not a part of the Microsoft ecosystem. Installing a Windows operation system to run Power BI on your Mac is the key, and in this video I go exactly how to do that as well as the best tool to use.

    @MattMike Hey Matt - thanks for the vid. This is the main reason I run Parallels - for PowerBI. Like others have asked - I'm interested in your Mac spec. I have been using Parallels on my Intel based desktop for years (i5, 32Gb memory and a M.2 drive) and performance has always been great. Picked up a new M2 MBP 16Gb, loaded Parallels 19 (tried 18 also) with Win11 & PowerBI and even allocating 12Gb to Parallels, PowerBI is so slow, it is near unusable. Very clean environment (fresh install of everything). So I'm not sure if it's the ARM ver of Windows 11 specifically - I was hoping to see improved performance from the M2 hardware but so far my experience is the opposite. Wish I could jam an extra 16Gb memory in to see if that makes the difference.

      I'm using an M2 with 8gb of unified memory. I'll be honest, Power BI does run a bit slow within Parallels at times. I do wish it was faster, but it gets the job done.

    What's your MacBook specifications and what are the specs you setup the VM? Also, are you using the ARM architecture?

      I have an M2 with 8gb of unified memory so I am using the ARM architecture. I'm not sure how to answer the second part of your first question. I just downloaded Parallels and got to work with it, not sure about the specs I set it up with, (though I'd be happy to learn!). Hope that helps a bit!

      @@MattMike Hi there. Thanks for the reply! I was using a M1 with 8GB but because of the lack of memory neither my mac and Parallels worked properly. I was curious about how you setup the virtual machine - memory and cores allocated mainly. Now I got a new macbook with M3 Pro and 18GB, so Parallels is running smooth ;) I usually work with a huge volume of data in Power BI, so...

      I've not had this issue, but Parallels can be a battery hog. It may be a performance issue rather than a CPU issue. Perhaps start by checking how many other applications your machine is running while using Parallels?

    Hi! Parallels has several versions of subscriptions, which is the best choice for working with PowerBI? Will the unlimited purchase option suffice or will it be too limited to work with PowerBI?

    • @MattMike
      @MattMike  5 місяців тому +2

      The standard subscription ($99/yr) works just fine with Power BI.

Do you think 16GB RAM would be enough or i’ll need more like 24GB or 32GB RAM to run smoothly Parallel VM & Microsoft Power BI ?

      Update Windows ! Install updates to enable x64 emulsion. I have a MacBook Air M1 with 8GB RAM, and it is working pretty well.

    • @MattMike
      @MattMike  2 місяці тому

      @haktube99 I've heard that the M3's run Parallels much more smoothly than the M2's so it might be worth the upgrade if you've been thinking about upgrading your Macbook anyway. With an M3, I think 16GB should do the trick.

    Hey great video! I was wondering if you have any experience running Excel through Parallels. Probably my last hangup preventing my switch to Mac is how bad Mac Excel is, and I also teach Windows Excel courses so the ability to run Windows Excel reasonably well is an absolute requirement. I'd be going for an M3 Pro if anything

    • @MattMike
      @MattMike  6 місяців тому +3

      Thanks! To my knowledge, even with Parallels you still can only use the Mac version of Excel. I've tried to figure out workarounds but it still opts for that version of the program. If I figure something out, I can do another video specifically for Excel.

      Parallels opens up like a browser window. So you have a complete Windows engine running as a “browser” style window. When you’re done using it, you just “X” out of it on the top left corner like you would a normal browser.
      Parallels also pauses while you’re not using it so you can minimize it too if you don’t want to completely exit the program.
