I was on Enterprise 65 when they were still using the "tower as radar" gizmo that no other carrier had and after they stopped using it, they had to put up with that big square island for the rest of her life, but they sure were proud of it when they told us Boy Scouts about it that day in 1970, or so, at Alameda NAS.

In our tooling shop we have a huge drill press (18" cylinder, 15' tall) that I as an apprentice pm'd/tuned up. Inside the arm it had papers, from Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co, and the original manual. They bought it in 1938, which was too late for it to help on the CV-6, but I called them anyway with the machine no they had on the bill. All they said was that it did make ships in WW2 but that's about all the info they had. Thing can still drive 3" holes with chips you do not want to touch to this day.

I watched an older documentary show on 'Carriers' (History Channel) that had the Captain being interviewed. He said something like: "I have to manage a city of 5,000 people, with two nuclear plants in operation in the basement, and an airport on the roof!" He said this with a grin, and it struck me as a pretty huge job to manage all that. :-) Thanks to all our proud members of the USN for your service. :-)

See my comments above. I commend you for knowing the record of CV-6. I can recall my father giving money to help save CV-6, the ship he flew from during the war. That was in 1958. But this government could not find the money to save the ship that literally save our country. At one point, before the October 26, 1942 battle off Santa Cruz, we only had 2 carriers left, Enterprise and Hornet. Hornet was sunk during that battle and Enterprise severely damaged. For about 6 months or so, Enterprise was all that we had to keep the Japanese at bay.

@@MrSuzuki1187 I had a great uncle that served on 3 of the 4 Yorktown class carriers. The only one he did not serve on was the Wasp. He actually started the war on the Lady Lex transferred to the Yorktown after Coral Sea because they added more AA guns to her while patching her up. He then was assigned to Hornet after we lost the Yorktown at Midway. Then when Hornet was sunk was assigned to Enterprise until she was sent for her major refitting after the Essex Class started to come online. He was assigned to the Essex for the rest of the war. Why was he assigned to so many ships. He literally could hit an enemy plane with an AA shell at 2 miles almost 80% of the time when he fired one from either the later 40MM Bofers or the older 5 inch guns that where replaced by the Bofers. He was a crack shot with any AA gun for some odd reason.

My father was a TBM Avenger pilot on the first Enterprise carrier, CV-6 during WW ll. That ship is the most decorated one in world history. She participated in 20 of the 22 naval engagements during the war, the next closest ship was in 16, plus a presidential unit citation and many more. Everyone on the Enterprise thought she had a soul, as she escaped so many near disasters. Of the 7 aircraft carriers afloat before Pearl Harbor, only the Enterprise was still alive and fighting at the end of the war. Then came CVN-65 who also racked up an impressive war record during Vietnam. I hope this one can continue the legacy of the first two.

Add this point, whenever this country needed her most there has been an Enterprise in service, often standing Harm's Way.
      - During the Barbary War and later War of 1812 there was a tiny sail powered schooner with the heart of a 3 deck Ship of the Line, she fought and won a number of actions against both the Barbary State of Tripoli and later against HMS Boxer.
      - No Enterprise during the Civil War, if there had been she would have been firing on fellow Americans.
      - During the Spanish American War that era's Enterprise was serving as a training ship.
      - WWI's Enterprise was a patrol craft working the U.S. East Coast.
      - We know the ship that brought the name to Legendary Status due to her service during WWII. Sometimes the odds against her made it seem as if the war could have been called "The Japanese Empire vs USS Enterprise."
      - We also know the immediate successor to CV 6, CVN 65. This ship was often very much on the minds of both Washington and the Soviet Union, both wanting to know where she was during the periods of the Cold War when that war threatened to go hot.
CVN 65 was on patrol in the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf on 9/11/2001. Her planes were the first to conduct reprisal strikes in reply to those terror attacks.
      - During a training exercise right at the end of her career, USS Enterprise (CVN 65) proved that she was still the fastest carrier in the Atlantic Fleet and still capable of outrunning her gas turbine powered escorting cruisers and destroyers ... just to prove she could.

It must be an exciting experience for everyone working to help build the new USS Enterprise as her hull takes shape. I know if I was a part of this team, I'd be happy and proud to tell people I know that I helped build her.

Enterprise needs to be renumbered to CVN 65-A. She will have the portholes from CV-6 The OG carrier. She will have Steel from CVN 65. Pardon my "Star Trek" but Logic dictates she be renumbered to CVN 65-A. That would be the Ultimate sign of appreciation for the gallant ships who came before her and what a way to honor the history of those ships. CV-6 20 battle stars!
Enterprise vs Japan... CVN-65 The first nuclear carrier and the BEAST of the mid east, from the space program to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her sorties flew for freedom. Send an email to the navy and let your voice be heard....

Enterprise was my last duty station. Retired while she was in the gulf. We, the R-Div. "Bad Dogs", did alot of work to help keep the old girl, "ship shape", and ready to meet what ever challenge she was sent to accomplish. Ironic that i retired to, "Enterprise, AL". Carry on Newport News!!!

What is the truth about the fact that CVN-81 is to be donated to the newly established Czech Navy with its main Baltic base in Královec (previously
Kaliningrad, previously Königsberg) and rename it to "Karel Gott" ?

Great subject btw! 🤙 Great to see the shipyard having guaranteed work for years to come...what Senators were responsible for this? kudo's to them for sure! 😎 should Americans worry that any of the plans may have been compromised to our adversaries?

Looking at that facility, there's a question that comes to my mind. Why can't US shipbuilding produce commercial vessels (cruise ships, container ships, etc.)? Why is all of that shipbuilding residing in Asia and Europe? If the US can build vessels with the size and complexity of an aircraft carrier, certainly we build any commercial vessel of any size.

    • @admiralmallard7500
      @admiralmallard7500 Рік тому

Because its cheaper for commercial companies to buy ships from there. Military vessels are part of national security so are most often built at home.

I'd like to see them being built! They said they're using steel from 65 Big E! That's cool. It be cool if they could some fittings or something like the wardroom table or just something from the 65. Maybe Air boss's chair or the wheel or something. Like somebody already said, the nameplates from CV6 Enterprise...just something to carry on!
