- Welcome to part 2 of the first instalment of our 2024 mystery quilt-as-you-go course, 'Time to Bloom'. Over the next 12 months, we will be making a quilt-as-you-go quilt, and there is so much to learn.
All the videos are free on UA-cam for everyone to watch. If you want to make this quilt with us and our international community, sign up on our website. www.patternpoole.com/
In this video, we will show you have to make a basic patchwork block and quilt it, quilt as you go.
You will learn how to use a rotary cutter and a ruler to cut out the blocks for the course.
For our course this year, we have two blocks for the price of one; each month, we'll make a patchwork block to learn a different technique. We will start with simple techniques and build up to more advanced ones, such as curved and foundation piecing. Each month, there will also be a bonus appliqué block designed by my daughter Alaura Poole with the theme of time to bloom. There's also 1 bonus patchwork block to make a total of 25 blocks. This gives the choice of making a large quilt with a layout of 5 blocks across and 5 blocks down, alternating between the patchwork and applique blocks.
You can also choose to make 1 block per month to make a smaller quilt. You can choose all patchwork, all applique or a combination of both.
You can use fabrics from your stash or purpose-buy fabric from the requirements list.
This year, we're making a monochromatic quilt and thought that it would be a fun idea to choose your favourite colour and then choose 5 fabrics ranging from a pastel tint to a deep shade. We're using Moda grunge in a beautiful range of blues with a light background and a small patterned backing fabric. The first patchwork block is a simple design that is made up of four 9 Patch blocks that are made with a strip piecing technique. Month 1 is all about learning the fundamentals of patchwork and the important steps to making accurate patchwork blocks.

Your videos are very detailed and clear. It took me a lot of practice to figure it out but it was worth the time.
Always good tips in your videos. I’m an intermediate quilter but can always learn more! I’m not a fan of sampler quilts or appliqué so won’t be sewing along with you but will watch and “Like” the videos.
That's great, thanks for that! We appreciate the views and likes!
Monica, I just want to say Thank you for all your videos. I was near giving up making quilts because my physical limitations cause me so much pain wrestling the size of a quilt while machine quilting. I use your “Cover strip” method, what a GIFT you have given back to me!!! Thank you so much! Vicki
Aww thank you so much, that’s wonderful that you can now quilt again!

Nice to see you back! I have issues with cross hatching, always get a pleat somewhere. Any advice how to prevent this from happening? Thanks.
