- Watch as black swallowtails grow from tiny caterpillars to full grown adults. Compared to other butterfly species, these little guys change in appearance as they graduate from one instar phase to the next.
These butterflies are easy to raise, as their caterpillars graze on many readily available plants in the carrot family, like fennel, dill, and parsley.

There are three black swallowtail butterflies--Eastern black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes asterius), western black swallowtail (Papilio bairdi) and desert black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes rudkini). :)

Found 14 caterpillars on my parsley and bronze fennel plants.
I just fell while forming its chrysalis. What do I do?
Will they eat queen Anne's lace? A relative to carrots?
Mine are hibernating. When should I start to keep an eye on them? I’ve read that may is when they start to emerge. I live in Pennsylvania not sure if it matters.
I have a few black swallowtail caterpillars I brought indoors. 5 of them have formed chrysalis so far. The old chrysalis is 19 days old, but hasn't eclosed yet. Can the indoor temperature of ~72 deg F have caused it to go into diapause? Or could the air conditioning in the home have caused it to dehydrate? I recently read that one should spray the chrysalis with water twice a day or dunk it in water a couple of times a day. Have you found that necessary? What the longest time that a chrysalis has taken for you to emerge (not an overwintering one)? I hope I get to see a butterfly emerge from my chrysalis.
How many days do they usually emerge after forming their crysalis ?
I heard that whatever they eat first they have to be kept on. Is this true? Because they have eaten almost all my parsley and I cannot find more potted parsley. Do I try to feed them cut parsley or switch them to carrot tops or what? Help!

I gave been trying to raise these guys. Bought 3 caterpillar houses. Feed them curley leaf parsley like the parsley the eggs were laid on. My question is: How long does it take for a typixal caterpillar to transform into a chrysalis? Some transition while others just eat and eat and eat. Also, why are some passing away? What could I be doing wrong?
I had one just die for no reason too. Mine were caterpillars for about 10 days then chrysalis for 14-21 days.
Possibly the food they were eating may have been sprayed
Do you keep the mesh bag outside? I had 20 large caterpillars and now they are gone. I am hoping the lizard didn’t eat them.

Lizards devour all of mine if I don’t bring them in. They really need our protection, there are too many factors against them including predators, insecticides, and loss of habitat

That's a metric wasp (Polistes metricus). I've written about them on the Ecology Blog before (blog.wfsu.org/blog-coastal-health/?page_id=14896). Wasps also hunt pest caterpillars that eat food plants, so they're not all bad. They just don't care whether we like certain caterpillars or others.
I have one, and it just sat on the wall for several days. The next day, it was a chrysalis, but only 2/3 chrysalis, with its butt sticking out. It’s been like that for 4 days. Is it a dud?
It sounds like it is a dud. Raising swallowtails and monarchs, strange things happen now and then, or animals die in mysterious ways. When I was filming this, one of the caterpillars attacked another one in the process of spinning a chrysalis, and killed it. Nature can be harsh just as often as it can be beautiful.

WFSU Ecology hi... this is my 1st time raising Black swallowtail. I have to safe them from the predators.
I feed them with rue and organic parsley that I grow by myself. But, I saw couple of them are die couple days later and some turn into chrysalis. For the dead one do you think that because other friends attacked each other? Thanks.
@@sohansohan1875 I have seen that happen. When left outside, they'll travel far from the plant. I've never actually seen a chrysalis from the ones I've left outside. So I'm not sure they make them close together, or are used to making them in proximity to each other. They spread out. What I saw when one killed the other was that one had gotten itself into the J position. Another was circling the enclosure would occasionally bump the other. One time around, though, it started whacking it with its body, until the other one burst open and a green mass spilled out. It was shocking.
WFSU Ecology thank you so much for your detail explanation. Now I understand what is happening with my dead caterpillars. This morning also I saw one caterpillar died and its body fall into two parts. I guess they were fighting for territory.
I also have 3 chrysalis this morning. I hope they all make it.
I have six of the caterpillars on parsley I got from McDonald's Garden Center....if they run out....can I use store bought parsley in the produce section and bring them inside?
Bunch parsley from the produce aisle should work, if you keep it hydrated. I prefer buying small plants to put in an enclosure, as they grow back after getting eaten. And if you want to keep swallowtails from eating the parsley you're growing for yourself, they'll eat related plants such as fennel and dill, and native relatives such as golden Alexander and meadow parsnip. In my garden they tend to prefer fennel and dill.

...can I bring those inside and put some of the bunch parsley I got from the store?
They're truly amazing to watch.....we have five Painted Lady Caterpillars who are now ready to pupate and are all hanging upside down.... unfortunately the Monarch caterpillar that was on the potted milkweed.... disappeared....and we have elm on the side of the house that has nine baby Question Mark caterpillars but they went incognito???

Need some help. Recently bought 2 small rue plants. Swallowtails have already laid a lot of eggs on them and I am afraid the plants are too small to support all those caterpillars when they hatch. What can I do to help them can I buy anything to feed them like parsley, carrot tops etc. From the grocery store?Do you have any suggestions? Thank you
Rue is in the citrus family, so the swallowtails laying eggs on your plants are giant swallowtails, and not black swallowtails. I'm not 100% sure, but many butterflies don't like switching plant species once they've started eating. Do you have any lemon or orange trees where you can transfer them? They love my Meyer lemon tree.

I did the same thing for my woolly bear winter was so messed up killed them in their cocoon
