At 2:15, the steering is discussed. Things have definitely changed since then. Nowadays, the steering in the I6 E39s is revered as one of the best when it comes to feel and feedback. Also, I love the nature of this car’s handling that was illustrated in the handling test. Very neutral at the limit, with a slight oversteering tendency.
Gorgeous design. BMW made the blueprint of what a luxury sports sedan should be. Even mass market brands that aren’t sports sedans copy BMW’s sportiness through design. I really love the 5 Series’ interior, especially the steering wheel with its built-in control and the beautiful and comfy seats. Very driver oriented.
@@JDMHaze keep in mind they are over 20 years old. Old plastic parts should all be changed. Once you do that they’re good. Replace the radiator stuff and window regulators. Those are the most common broken things.
@@JDMHaze like I said, the cooling system is the thing that you have to worry about. If the engine pulls air you get overheating issues. That will cause the head gasket to blow. Engine and trans are pretty bulletproof. Vacuum lines and old plastic are the big culprits
@@boss12 Well that's good because I'm sure the aftermarket has a better made replacement parts by now, with either better quality plastic or some other aluminum or other material
0:48 saying this car is bigger is practically a running joke now. The current 3 Series is larger than this 5, and is as wide and high as an E32 7 Series, and even has a longer wheelbase. Cars nowadays are massive and bloated, and have lost that sleek, svelte profile like this E39 has
Best 5 series ever. The e39 was a graceful, beautifully designed sedan. BMW have simply lost their way with the overstyled, tasteless designs of today.
I have had a E39, 528i with premium and sports package. What a motor it had! Smooth with ok torque. But when stepping on it did rev up like a gas powered turbine. A couple times I had her up to around 135 mph. Suspension, superb. Fit and finish, great. And the design was one of Bimmers best. Unfortunately a drunk woman killed my E39 while parked in front of a restaurant. She hit the passenger door side with about 45 mph. Her car flipped over. My Bimmer was moved 30 ft sideways. RIP. She went to jail.

I truly feel this is one of the best vehicles ever made.
The best 5 Series in my opinion. With these 5 series and the later 3 Series, (E46), BMW was on a roll with their designs. They still hold up today...
Probably was the best, I dislike the e34 and f10
Best looking sedan ever produced in my opinion.

Well, tires at the time had softer sidewalls as well. I believe this is exaggerated by the stock wheel and tire size.
This design was what got me into BMW’s 5 Series (which I never had before). The 540i and later M5 are my FAVs of this design.
When BMW produced good looking cars which weren’t so troubling as now.
I watched this program every saturday in the 90's
That engine has to be underrated because that is fast given the stated power and weight
Just as fast as the 1996 impala ss which had a 350 5.7L V8 and had 335 lbs-ft of torque. Very impressive from a small 6 cylinder.

even today, a perfect daily driver... mine has over 200.000 miles on it, runs like a dream and it is economical, because my 528i runs on LPG
My manual M54B25 e39 on LPG with 562.000km on it greets you :)
Wait, what's LPG?

The 528i with its proper rack and pinion steering handled better than the M5 with that outdated recirculating ball steering box.
Е-39 ❤
mine is the 2003 m sport 525i had it 9 years 145k never get tired or feel unsafe
same 🎉
the best first car i couldve ever had
For contrast
The 840ci of same year with V8 was 7.3 sec 0-60
This car is 7.1 with V6
Impressive
i6 not V6 but still..
Who was using cassette tapes in 1997???
Hey I was. LoL 😂
You weren't there probably, to be asking that question.
I wish i could have one, brand new.
zero to 60 at 7 seconds. ? ??
Yeah, the smaller 3 series with the same motor did it around 6 and a half
My 2005 e60 with the m54 engine runs like a top with 275k miles.
Motor Week got this wrong. A couple drivers that were too attached to the E34……This car destroys the E34.
It’s superior in every way possible
528 has lack of power, the 550i is awesome
