  • Muddy backyard fix if you have dogs - 4 year update.
    We used pine shavings by Guardian, horse bedding. You can also use pine. Works great for muddy backyards with dogs! No more mud issue and it doesn't hurt their paws. Absorbs water and keeps mud underneath. One 8 cubic foot bag is good for a 15' x 15' area or possibly 20' x 20'.

    The breed's officially recognized name is German Shepherd Dog in the English language (sometimes abbreviated as GSD). The breed is commonly known asAlsatian in Britain and Ireland. The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to 1899. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time however, because of their strength, intelligence, trainability, and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military roles, and even acting. The German Shepherd is the second-most registered breed by the American Kennel Club and seventh-most registered breed by The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom.

    You are my hero! Two dogs with a dog door and mud pit for a backyard were driving me insane. After following your instructions yesterday and cleaning the house today I feel so much better. My dogs paws are not caked with mud anymore. Thank you!!!

    How awesome!
    Yeah, It took me a long time to realize it would be ok to use the cedar chips on the developing mud. I did it last fall and put seed and clover seed underneath. It has really worked well!
    Wish I had seen your video years ago!
    Good stuff here. It really works.
    I'd rather vacuum up some cedar than wipe super muddy paws. I have 8 paws to wipe and my back gets tired.

    We foster dogs here in tn and while I love it, we at times have 5-8 dogs. And that wears out the yard come colder times.
    Thankfully we have hardwood floors so it's not horrible but I'm definitely gonna do this. Hopefully it'll help my aussie fur stay cleaner longer too haha

    I appreciate this video so much! We have a small town home backyard in ND where it is winter maybe 75 % of the year, and the transition from winter to spring or that weird in-between of fall going into winter is a nightmare. It is soooo muddy! We also have 2 dogs, a german shepherd mix and a border collie who are both mischievous lol. Can't wait to try your hack this spring! Thanks for the info. :)

    I'm thinking about doing this to my small 18x30 backyard. Thank you for posting this long term update. I'm just wondering if you've had any issues with your dogs getting any paw splinters from the cedar shavings? or are they fairly smooth edged? thats my one remaining worry.

    • @GermanShepherdWeekly
      @GermanShepherdWeekly  7 місяців тому +2

      No issues at all! They are far too bendy and soft to cause any issues. Like leaves on the ground.

    Try laying some thick husky plastic down (from Depot) prior to laying that stuff down, and pin it into ground. Will at least stop the mud

    • @valentinaharold1333
      @valentinaharold1333 Рік тому

      Have you tried putting plastic down first? Mine is so muddy idk if I can nail the plastic down because it won't hold. But I could just lay it there I don't want it to cause mildew or something tho?

    • @GermanShepherdWeekly
      @GermanShepherdWeekly  Рік тому +1

      plastic is a pain...it doesn't dissolve, the pee would sit on top, you have spikes in the ground. this is natural.

    Question, I have a German Shepherd and a pitbull that run back-and-forth vigorously trying to catch squirrels on my fence. Do you think this material will hold up?
    If not, I was just thinking of investing in turf, but this is very expensive process

    • @GermanShepherdWeekly
      @GermanShepherdWeekly  Рік тому +1

      It will. I thought of turf as well but probably won't do it. Who knows.

    Do the dogs try to eat the shavings? My backyard is a mess, but I'm afraid my poodle will try and eat this stuff. That's why I won't try gravel or stones. I've already caught him with rocks in his mouth that he dug up.

    So how does it work with cutting the lawn can a lawn mower go through fit ?

    • @GermanShepherdWeekly
      @GermanShepherdWeekly  Місяць тому

      I don't cut the lawn since there is no grass to cut....it was just mud, covered with this stuff. If you cut the lawn, the mower will suck it all up.

    I need to do this asap. Can I ask why you use cedar over pine shavings? I hear that pine absorbs better so I’m unsure which to get but I want to get something that is ok for the soil as well. What’s your opinion?

    • @GermanShepherdWeekly
      @GermanShepherdWeekly  5 місяців тому

      They are both good. The store only had cedar so that's what I went with. They will both work great. NO CONS.

    I just started trying this with pine shavings. My yard is a muddy mess and I'm so tired of it. I still have a lot more area to cover, but my problem is how much I'm getting back in my house. It's everywhere, and don't ever see it on my pups first. Is it just me?

    • @GermanShepherdWeekly
      @GermanShepherdWeekly  4 місяці тому +1

      That's odd. To be honest, I have never seen one flake in the house. What type of dogs do you have? If they have cotton-like hair like a Maltese, it will stick to them like crazy. But you said it's not on them. Do they bring it in on their paws and it falls off?
