Edit again: i have done some trouble shooting and the experience has improved! Video is live on the channel now.
I just want to say: My personal experience with the Portal is what it is and I can't review it positively if I can't get it to work. So honesty is the best policy here. That's how it turned out to be!
Some suggestions have been made that I haven't tried yet, some I have (such as a gaming router and 5ghx connection which I already have) and I'll keep trying new things to get it to work but I'm also happy to accept the fact this accessory isn't for me? Although I desperately want it to be - and I stated that time and time again in the video.
For those who get one and it works for you, that's awesome! I am jealous. But it is what it is and I guess I'll just have to sit at my couch and play normally.... what a shame hahaha (first world problem).

Liessshy, don't be afraid to be honest... It's perfectly fine to dislike a product... If I'd review this product, I'd be much more harsh than you were... PS Portal is a junk in many more aspects than you've pointed out 🤠

@Liessshy, You’re not alone. I’ve had the UK one since last November. It’s had the same bugs. It massively affects multiplayer online gameplay. It always loses connection with Fortnite, and it glitches out.
@PlayStation #PlayStation have a LONG WAY to go, if they want to compete with the Nintendo Switch, in the Handheld Console wars.
Do you have your ps5 connected thru a Lan connection doing that disconnecting hdmi. Should help that quite a bit. If you haven't tried already

I'm also Australian but a friend sent me a Portal from Japan back in December, so I've had a fair bit of time with it. Other than making sure that your PS5 is plugged in directly into your router, what held me is unplugging the HDMI cable... I know it sounds strange but I read it somewhere and it made a huge difference!
Really hoping this things gets better and better with updates! Would definitely buy one once the kinks are worked out.

Appreciate the review. I was finally able to get mine about a week ago. I haven't had any lag issues, but I have a fiber connection and I pay for 500Mb's, my download/upload speeds are equal. I noticed when I was on someone else's network the other day where they only had about 12 Mb's upload I had issues. On my network at home and at work ( I never play video games at work :) ) I haven't had a problem.
I’m the perfect target audience for the portal as well and I have very similar up and down to you so I’m really hoping it works well for me. Thank you for the honest review. Great vid.

Great review and honest. I agree with your review and also the device targets me. I have same issues but I still enjoy the Portal. Front missions is good on it. Playing the new Silent Hill was horrible I had to use my gaming monitor.
I suggest a wired connection for your ps5 and router. And turning off the HDMI toggle off in the settings. That well help with lag and from having both the Tv and portal on at the same time. 😊 Also forgot to mention that you have have the ps5 in rest mode. Hope this helps!

Just a heads up, internet speed doesn’t matter when playing the portal on the same network as the ps5. Besides initial check in or actual portal updates, the portal doesn’t touch the internet. All streaming is done within the lan.

Great honest review Liessshy! Do You find that remote play on your phone works well in your household then? If that’s the case then it sounds like an issue with the portal itself than your modem/setup 🤔
Thanks my friend! Remote play on mobile definitely works better. It's not perfect though (it never has been for me) but there is a noticeable improvement!
I got a steam deck and can remote play from that to the PS5 fine. And I can stream xbox games, as well as play pc games, retro games.

I've got a portal at home. And I've already years ago put WiFi all around the house. Works best in my bedroom and living room. Even outside in the car. Great for getting child in the car while we pack everything else (edit WiFi just reaches the car)
Change your thing to 1080p on the system in settings
Tip. Try putting games in performance mode when playing on the portal. Game changer
Alot of these connections issues are router settings and the router itself, if you have a stock one from and ISP this will happen alot, having a high end one with wifi 6 will be a game changer, the portal i know is only wifi 5 but the sony is 6 and the way a wifi 6 connect and distrubutes data is conpletely different to a wifi 5 router having a good router also bypasses the issue of it needing to be plugged in with an ethernet cable
I like ve this video was so accurate, the design looks really good but it would have been better if you found play it without Wift and the would-be storage built in it to make the game run smoothly

Awesome short video, the PlayStation portal is fire 🔥 make sure your on the latest software update then on your tv turn it off or unplug the HDMI cable from the PlayStation it will help cause the way you have it your broadcast to video feeds which will cause the lag, so when you use it make sure your tv is either powered off or just unplug the hdmi cable and it will be fine and make sure your PS5 is updated also. Thanks for the suggestions! I had the tv on to show the responsiveness of the stream vs. What's shown on the TV to show the low latency that's supposed to work haha but I will have a follow up video with suggestions too so thank you!

@@Liessshy awesome yeah it should run smoother, normally when you first set it up it does have a latency issues then it smooths itself out
It’s hard understand but not everybody having the same experience with the portal some struggle with connection problems and low video quality like you did and some(like me) have a smooth experience with zero problems not quite sure how to explain it but me personally having a blast with it didn’t touch my ps5 for a while 😅 I really recommend it 💙
I want it to work for me, trust me. I want to love and use this thing!!
I think the issue is less videogame streaming and more Sony not optimising Remote Play well enough - regardless of what device is used. Hopefully they make streaming games more stable in the future because the Portal is definitely something I'd be interested in owning and playing games on.

Try hard wiring your PS5 to your modem. It'll help a lot more.
Try with the PS5 wired if it’s possible. Reckon you’ll end up with a far better experience

I bought the portal at a premium price due to low inventory and can’t play any of the sports or fps games I love. The lag makes any game hard to play.. bummer I will be selling asap ✌🏼

Your internet speed shouldn't make any difference if you're at home. Isn't is just going from ps5 to router to the portal? It would be different if you were outside of your home. But the setup you have doesn't use the internet.
The Portal always relies on a constant internet connection whether you’re at home with your PS5 or not. Unfortunately the device doesn’t operate like a Wii U Gamepad which operates on a proprietary non internet based connection which allows clear streaming of the video feed from the console to the gamepad. If the Portal provided the consumer with both options of connection, the device would be much more practical
@@shadowwarrior3928 it still just uses the home wifi bandwidth to transfer the video and audio data. Not it's internet connection bandwidth. In saying that I agree about the Wii U. I absolutely loved using the gamepad to stream games to and it generally worked pretty flawlessly. Why they didn't do a direct connection to the ps5 makes no sense.
@@krammis76 What exactly is the difference between “home wifi bandwidth” & “internet connection bandwidth”? Are you commenting on how a home internet connection would be more stable for the Portal than some random Wifi network? If so, I 100% agree with you but it still doesn’t explain her baffling issues with the portal since her internet speed was pretty rapid. If I’m wrong & have made some incorrect assumptions, feel free to pull me up & give me an explanation.
Maybe Sony couldn’t make such local/proprietary connection tech for a cheap price & sell it for a decent profit at 200USD/329AUD? If Nintendo could do it in 2012 & bundle that tablet with a whole console for 300 ish USD, why couldn’t Sony in 2024? Wii U direct connection for the Portal would be the ideal option for a device like this though. Wii U supremacy
@@shadowwarrior3928 I guess I'm confused as to what data the internet connection is giving the portal. The internet connection isn't getting or receiving the video and audio data from the ps5 from my knowledge. I'm pretty sure the video and audio data is only moved around by the wifi router part.
I guess it depends on the situation. A nice alternative option. When it works I’m sure. The ones that love it apparently have flawless internet at all times. Others like you who just wished it works consistently to justify its appeal/purpose.

Kind of sad really sony didn’t go all out on this product, it could’ve been more but when I heard it can only be used if you own a PS5, I knew straight away it would fail. Much better off using your phone with remote play or Steam Deck with Remote play which is something I do sometimes do.
Remote Play just needs to be improved as a whole!

Ps5 must be connected with ethernet cable not wifi
Ps5 has to be wired to the router
It has nothing to do with your Internet speeds if you're using the Portal from within your own house. It will be the ISP-supplied router and it's awful wi-fi capabilities and restrictive settings. Never use these, they're all useless. Run your NBN modem directly to a proper gaming router, setup individual ssid's for 5Ghz and 2.4ghz, and only connect to 5ghz for the Portal. That will solve it 👌 ~ Beau
And that right there is the problem with internet access in Australia. While your suggestion is perfect, it is too much for the average consumer. Until ISP's provide decent routers the average consumer will not be able to experience the 'nice things' in an effective or intentional way.
Thanks for your comment but we do have a gaming router already set up (ASUS) and have had a fiddle with the settings but I'm going to try some other things during the week to see if I can improve the experience.
I just thought about this point @acid1cov3r1de3 !! To market this device to the general public who aren't all I.T. specialists like I know Beau is, with having to have all these adjustments and additional purchases (new router, Ethernet cables etc), it's not a great experience for the general customer who just wants to stream a game to their handheld in a different part of the house. Australia's internet can't be the blame for Sony's decision to make this obviously, it's just a shame for some of us who want an out of the box solution and don't get it.
You are exactly right. The portal looks like an amazing product. I too love aesthetic appeal. As a consumer who has some I.T. knowledge, I wouldn't want to have to change settings or buy a new router. To no fault of Sony or their product (based on the few reviews I have seen and zero experience with the actual product). It's just the technological state we are at in Aus and different network set-ups the experience may vary. I would love to try it for myself but as you mentioned, if the experience on a phone is just as good, why would we want/need to spend all the extra money? @@Liessshy
I knew this thing was going to fail, game streaming even on a LAN just isnt there. But switch 2 is right around the corner and there are plenty of steam deck clones to choose from

As a fellow Aussie I knew this device would not be up to par with our market - as much as I would love to get one and being the target audience , our nbn internet speeds especially in regional Aus make this device almost useless. Which is a real shame. Honestly it should of been a digital game purchased system like a psp
This was my fear too. There are a few more things I want to try to see if I can improve it but I'm also happy to admit defeat and say it hasn't worked for me. I'm sure I won't be the only person with this problem. But I'm also sure there will be so many others who will have a great experience with it! I guess I'm just one of the unlucky ones this time
If you're playing at home, internet speeds have no impact on on this. It's the quality of your router and general home network 🙏
This device release was a fail I’m not buying it. I’m gonna wait for later in the year and get a ps5 pro if it does come out. Though I wonder what the price will be

Where are you from? Australian internet isn't as good as the rest of the world and is known for not being optimised for things like this. That's why we do not have PS Now service.

@@Liessshy I’m not sure why you keep mentioning our internet speeds in regards to this device. The internet speed is only relevant if you’re outside your home network trying to use the device. You could have dial up an an awesome router and it’s only going to be as good as your network connection. Unless you’re playing online obviously.
Nice review L, I'm sorry your experience has been this bad. It's honestly not surprising and I'm not really sure what Sony was thinking when they made this device especially since the connection issues are so bad for a lot of people.
Thanks Kizzy! I'm sure over in the States for example it works a lot better haha but Australia net issues are partially to blame here as not everyone can benefit from high speeds. I hope I can get it working with some trouble shooting!

Connect PS5 to 5GHZ, the portal to 2.4. Lag free for me even without Ethernet.
This is bad advice, alot of routers cant do this and class them as separate networks

I’ve been asked many times if I’m getting the portal and I’ve mentioned living in the country with very bad internet, I highly doubt my internet would even be able to handle it. It’s such a shame because I too am the perfect target audience, but I can’t do anything to get better internet where I live
I currently also have Starlink running at my house (in my studio - completely separate from the house's FTTP as it's further out on the property) so I'll give it a test and let you know if that works better because if you are rural/country based, Starlink works wonders.

IF YOU HAVE HEADPHONES SUCH AS THE ARITIC 7 YOU CAN PLUG THE DUNGLE INTO THE PS5 AND IT WILL WORK ON THE PS PORTAL THE ONLY THING IS YOU HAVE TO STAY IN RANGE OF THE DUNGLE I PLAY IN BED MY PS5 IS LESS THAN 10 FT FROM ME BUT YOU CAN GO WIRELESS.
Sony should never made this divice at all and it cost $200 ! what a waste of time and money and also guys if u want gaming for travel just get a switch or a steam deck or even PSP is worth it trust me !!!
I don't think it shouldn't NOT be made, they just need to work on their remote play service a bit more and optimise it better. I'll be buying a Steam Deck this year though haha

You can't use it running WiFi with the PS5 it has to be wired to the router. I have no issues doing that.
They should of just made a vita 2. I hate the idea of any streaming & happily rather native anyday! This device is useless!

phone + Backbone has always been my go-to but I was exctied for the PS5 experience with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers :(
