- Xeen Cinema lens VS Vintage lenses
1 - Xeen 50 mm T 1,5 VS Canon FD 50 f 1,4 / Nikkor AIS 50 f 1,4 / Helios 44-2 58 mm f 2
2 - Xeen 85 mm T 1,5 VS Nikkors AIS 85 f 1,4 / Helios 40-2 85 mm f 1,5
Realistically if a movie was made with any of these lenses with decent content and good editing nobody would be able to know which lens was used. At least not 99.99% of the population.
I agree mostly, but I'm confident that people would feel and notice a difference with the Helios lenses, even if they didn't know what it was. They create quite a dramatic and noticeable look when shooting between 1.5 and 2.8... Whether you like it or not is a different question.
Great comparison. I noticed a bit of ghosting on the Nikkor 50mm wide open on the model's buttons that the Canon 50mm didn't have. On the other hand, the Nikkor has really cool bokeh wide open. Thanks!
The Canon FD lens is my favorite.
Xeen looks best, but I feel the FD is best of the vintage lenses.
@@User_not_found_403 Agree, absolutely.
If you are on a budget a FD is the best price /quality lens .
Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison.
Amazing how controlled the Xeen renders the background blur, prefers the craziness of the Helios though.
The xeen lens is so clean, the bokeh lacks texture and looks so flat and boring for me.
On the other hand Helios has an impressionist feel to it, the swirly bokeh on the left and right edges looks like brush strokes and gives a painting like effect to the image.
And being an owner of canon fd lenses i can tell that the nikon and canon looks quite similer and the best choice for any professional works if you can rehouse it .
The Helios 44-2 has the busiest bokeh I really wished it could render a creamier background. Regardless, it's the one I would pick out of the four.
great test! youtube compression makes it hard to judge the sharpness sometimes (maybe its my computer) do you have some still frames we can download??
Canon Fd in the first set up and the Xeen in the 2nd setup... the Helios is great too... the Canon FD in 28mm is next level great if you get a chance to play with it and the Contax Zeiss lenses are excellent vintage lenses
Nikkor AIS skin tones are unrivaled.
To my taste, Canon fd is the winner
You must like the taste of tide pods too.
Nikon ftw! No but really they all look good. I’m not a fan of the xeen though. Overpriced for what it is. I personally like zeiss but I’m generally more biased towards Nikon since all my zeiss is Nikon f mount. The Helios is cool but can be too much sometimes. It all depends on what you’re shooting tbh.
Helios all day long, love mine
Very interesting. I much prefer the Xeens.
thanks a lot for this video. i love this musique ,French music .L’amour existe Georges delerue😉
What camera are you using? Perhaps you could add your camera and settings. Great tests!
Hi, it's a Sony Alpha 7 III, Gamma Ciné 4
Thank you, so much for this! People have been trying to get me onto the Helios bandwagon, but that bokeh is really distracting to my eye.
Same. I bought a Helios and also the Jena Biotar 58 F2 to see what the hype was about, but I also find Shirley bokeh distracting. I prefer it to be defocussed areas to be butter smooth and my balls round.
I honestly think it depends how your eye is educated to cinema or not. Just like some people think jazz music is just noise but the more you listen tonit and familiarize yourself the more you like it.
@@NajatJellab Ehh, don’t agree with that implication. It’s just preference in my case - nothing to do with how cinematically trained my eyes are. What’s considered cinematic can be vague and broad. I have many vintage lenses which have cinematic traits, without swirly bokeh. My eyes are just fine.
@@User_not_found_403 i still think that if you watched eisenstein or even pasolini movies you d see the exact same bokeh your eyes dont like. So i guess someone who doesnt enjoy john coltrane could argue that his ears are just fine yet i dont think everything is subjective.
@@NajatJellab Lol, Art is subjective and I do enjoy jazz and have many Coltrane albums. Your taste is your taste but please don’t imply that because mine is different, I’m somehow not a student of the game. Its a flimsy argument.
To me Samyang blur has always looked as AE's Fast Blur. I use old Zeiss lenses which look more like the Hélios. Way more pleasant and artistic blur!
Made me laugh about the Fast Blur. )) I got the 50/1.8 Pancolar MC, it's amazing.
I would never shoot a bright daylight scene with the helios lenses, the bokeh is really distracting and the lack of good coating makes them a nightmare when the sun is somehwere close to the shot, or you have light entering through a window behind the subject. even when you shade it.
yet they can excel in darker moody shots that tend to look a bit too perfect and clean with modern lenses.
I own and use these 85mm lenses on full-frame camera bodies:
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 AI converted
Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 D auto focus
Since I have been satisfied with the images produced by these two lenses, I have never conducted a comparison test like the ones in this video.
Great depressive music 👍
To my eyes the Xeen is miles ahead and much more beautiful than the older lenses.
I agree
you have terrible taste
the xeen is overexposed and this is due to the fact that it receives a greater amount of light due to having better coatings and improved optics in relation to the FD. I did a light and color correction and I won the Xeen, since the skin tone and the general contrast of the image recovered, the Fd looked like a cheap lens and without character after correction, I challenge you to do it on your computer and check what I'm saying. I don't even have a xeen and I have nothing in favor, I just did a little test. Without the correction the comparison is not fair.
I own and use these 50mm lenses on full-frame camera bodies::
Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (8-element) (49mm filter)
Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (7-element) (49mm filter)
Fujinon 50mm f/1.4 EBC (49mm filter)
Fujinon 50mm f/1.4 (49mm filter)
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D (52mm filter)
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E (52mm filter)
I conducted comparison tests similar to the ones in this video. All lenses produced high quality images.
wow, the xeen lens has so much 3D pop!!
May I know what camera you used in this comparison?
hi, it's a sony alpha 7 III
The light had subsided for the Helios shots so not a valid comparison with the helios.
The FD was comparable to the xeen. The Nikon was softest at wide open and like the helios seemed to shrink the subject for the long shots which is a sign of a bad lens. The FD held its ground through all shots. Pity they cant be reasonably used on video slrs. The adaptors kill the sharpness. I thought the 85s looked much nicer on the close and mid shots and the 50s looked better on the long shots. Good video but for a true comparison it needs to be done with controlled lighting indoors.
tell me you've never used a nikkor 50mm 1.4 ais withotu telling me you've never used a nikkor 50mm 1.4 ais
For my taste the Helios wins in both setups, all way long. Astonishing that the modern Xeen lenses are in deep trouble to stand-out out (quality-wise) - obviously the vintage lenses are a stiff competition although the handling of the Xeen lenses will make a massive difference. Most probably rehoused Helios lenses are the best way to go, with that you have the best of both worlds: good handling and an outstanding, outstanding vintage feel.
Canon FD my Favorite Lens... Best Film Look
The results are very subjective of course. I like the character of Helios and Canon FD but as a cheap cinema lens, the result of Xeen is not bad.
Which lenses are modern, and which are vintage?
Vintage glass is the bomb. The Canon 50mm is sweet.
Compare with price
the helios is the clear winner.. wish u added zeiss into the mix
This is real world lens testing - boring, practical, and informative. Thanks for not trying to entertain 👍
😉you're totally right, boring but instructive ...
Xeen the chromatic aberration was horrible I was surprised
It's too late. I've gone full Pentax PK lol
helios looks so good
I found the Canon the most pleasant. Who comes up with these names tho? Zeen?!
XEEN lenses are made by Samyang, it's Cinema Lenses in PL mount
All these lenses are excellent in their own way.
Didn't like the Nikkor. Out of all the 50mm lenses, it's actually the one that I don't have. ;) I have the 50/1.4D, though, and it's not bad.
for bokeh helios 58 f2 is my favorite.
for overall iq i'll go for nikkor
Hm, I don't know
Гелиос 58-2 ??? Может быть 44-2 ?
Helios 44-2 - 58 mm
Nikkor looks soo good. Canon Fd is close second.
Nikkor is the worst of them all, actually. Samyang, Canon FD, Helios, Nikkor -- the last.
@@MajorTomWorkshop I have nikons and even I can see how bad they look lol
that canon FD is lovely
It is lovely, Man I had the opportunity to use My 50mm FD lens to its fullest using a Mirrorless camera and let me tell you, its the only reason why I want to use Mirrorless. If I could have it adapted properly on the EF mount I would. Something about the FD lenses that stand out.
Xeen are the best
very sad comparison :(
The xeens are definitely the worst look imo. Or may be i just like classic character more
