The hairs on my neck stood up when I heard True North from BR today. Guess we all get nostalgic. I was listening to Steel Pulse before that I saw Bad Brains in Germany 1991. What a memory
Build the Nation was the album my partner didn't have although he's the one who got me into BB. I found the album on their official channel and got hooked with the schizo vibe throughout the album. This song has since become one of our top favs.
I was at the festival on the opening clip (sasquatch 2007). Blackalicious had just performed of whom I'm a fan of and was trying to get to the front row during the show. Never listened to bad brains before but obviously heard of them and knew their influence. Never been to a punk show before (not like this, anyway) and was confused about literally everyone stretching and just smoking crazy amounts of weed, like a bunch of shirtless stoners prepping for a marathon. Then HR comes out... I'm like wtf this skinny old black dude is punk? Weird. Then he opens the first chorus, "I and I bless the...". Line opens up for front row. I'm like, fuck yeah, finally whatever. Start casually walking to the front when the instrumentals come in. Holy hell! Been a fan ever since.
God of Love Tour, 400 capacity room, I walk in and cheer and it’s hugs and kisses all around, and the air is electric. Then one of my buddies slips at least a hit of Czechoslovakian acid on my tongue. When HR came bouncing out the whole room just lost their shit. The greatest fucking band!
When I was walking into the show for the God of Love Tour, a friend of mine screamed my name and then kept screaming “Czechoslovakia!”. All my crew was in the lobby, and the air was thick with anticipation of a religious experience. As I was asking him what he was talking about, he dosed me straight onto the tongue, with a move that would not be possible under normal, mere mortal circumstances. Turns out that batch was dubbed “Czechoslovakia” and it was goooooooooooodddddd!!!! About 1/2 later the Brains play their ubiquitous intro riff, many, many times, seemingly to build up anticipation, which it did, and suddenly HR comes bouncing out onto the stage (this place held 500 people assholes to elbows) with a long and regal looking robe, like a king, and busted straight into God of Love! From that point on, the gig was epic, a blur, and focused at the same time. I thought Soul Craft was gonna bring the walls down. There is and never will be another like the Bad Brains. On the Rise tour I saw them four different times. There is nothing quite like being a long hair moshing with 100 skinheads and then a reggae song breaking it all down, with brotherly love and respect flowing like water off a cliff, tough guys becoming sobbing brothers in embrace, and then Pay To Cum kicks in and it’s all hell breaking loose again. Nothing compares. Well, Ministry at the 2nd Lollapalooza in a Charlotte was otherworldly, but that’s another epic story, with three bonfires each maybe 30’ in diameter and about 500-1000 people moshing in rhythm around it such that the fire became an upwelling vortex, carrying blankets, pizza boxes, t shirts, you name it upwards while hundreds of Doc Martens pounded the ground in a perfect mini quake when suddenly we were attacked by firemen with extinguishers. A handful of low tackles and body slams later and we were shooting those into the air while those poor guys ran for their lives. It was tribal, primal, surreal, but ultra real, and Uncle Al held court over an experience never (obviously) to be forgotten.
Ass kicking song from the Brains as usual. Its ironic that on a song called "give thanks and praises" (to Jah) that the System of a Down guy is wearing a Slayer "Christ Illusion" shirt as the last image on the video...
I think i get hr's point of his recent behavior. i think he's trying to personify a fixed gaze on Spirit among chaos. "You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies."
@televisedcolonoscopy I only "give a fuck" b/c I'm a Slayer, Bad Brains, and music fan, so I always notice band shirts. I thought it was "ironic" b/c the SOAD guy directed the video, but wore a shirt that has like the opposite message. Now why is what you said ironic (that a music geek analyzes details in a video by a band he likes)?
Fucking bad ass motherfuckers! Punk, metal and reggae all in one.
Why isn't this album on spotify?
Bcuz spotify is artists raping?
Spotify is robbing you all of true sound quality amongst other thievery. At least Apple Music sounds good.
Now it is!
I think it is if I remember correctly. But it's definitely on apple music.
MASSIVE RESPECT FROM NEW ZEALAND ALL THE WAY TO THE MIGHTY BAD BRAINS !
