My wife and I are recent subscribers to your channel, and we enjoy it a lot. I want to comment on you Lixada stove/grill. I got mine back in 2019, and it was branded as a Yoler, but it is not in stock any longer. You're one of the first I've seen test one of these types, and I'll have to say, I really like mine, and wouldn't trade it for any of the other types. Safe travels, y'all !!
I have the big one on left and the smallest one (folding), which I bought from Sportsman Guide about 15 or so years ago and I absolutely love it! I keep it in my hiking packs and b.o.b.'s and although it is dirty, it's so small, efficient and handy that I will never get rid of it.
Enjoyed the video, hearing more of the wisdom learned through your travels! Regarding common law marriage after two days, it seems like you two have been married for at least 40 years, the way you both think and work together as one. What a wonderful couple you are!
Now this is good.. You are like me you like tools that work and work every time you need them .. I have been looking at portable wood burning stoves and you may have solved some of the mystery i have about them.. There is a fellow who builds wood burning stove systems he sells and when he is not in the backcountry fishing mostly he is refining his wood stoves that carry the name "Firebox Stoves".. That man cooks everything on his wood burning stoves , and i mean complete dinners and breakfasts to die for out in the wild.. But so far i have not bought one .. I did not ever read that about the middle stove or anyone on UA-cam saying anything .. Now i would say Linda's cooking is great too.. I will look up the stove on your left in the film as it looks like it works fine for me ... Thanks well done ..
I know what you mean about the gasifiers; I think they're only good for fire-watching; I bought the big rectangular Silverfire some years ago; you can cook on it if you got nothing else but only feeds from top, just use as bonfire now.
,,,very helpful video to know which stove work more Effectively,,, specially when we are on a Low Budget, and cannot afford to waste money,,, can also appreciate all the other helpful links to find more specific information,,,
Ha! It's always good to have options when needed. I am blessed to be part of this era, more stove choices and truck choices, etc... You two love birds did an awesome video presentation as always. I like the "gasifier" (the one you don't like) for the purpose of mini-bonfire stove next to my rv (due to compact size for storage and less smoke) when camping in the desert where very tiny fire wood is only found. Thank you for sharing. Have a safe travels.
Using the gasifier the way that you do is perfect. I bought one with a different design and it's way better when I put a pot on top. You can see it in my video if you like: ua-cam.com/video/EkWBcREA_H4/v-deo.html

I have noticed that the better quality gasification stoves seem to work better. You do need to keep the wood below the ports. That being said they are a pain to add wood to and you have to spend more time processing the wood to fit.

That older, heavier, triangular stove you demonstrated was developed at a Kibbutz for the Israeli armed forces on recon patrols in the desert. A shallow depression would be made at night and the stove inserted and lit using small pieces of wood no larger than a finger in diameter. It kept the flames hidden while allowing cooking and heating water. I have two of them.
Gosh that looked like a good lunch. So when you stop and use your stove to cook lunch how long does the stove take to cool off? How do you store it in your rig?
If you use one of these for a short stop you, of course, have to deal with the hot ashes. The good thing is that they burn hot and only use a small amount of wood so there isn't much left over in the pan to dump out and a small amount of water does the trick easily. The stove cools off in about 10 minutes or so, depending on the ambient temperature and we store it in the bag it came with, but any cloth bag will do.
Like the 2 end models but they all work realy well the gassafire it is sopose to cut down on the fire i think. The top should be adjustable by raising the pot up and down to regulaght heat.
In the same place as the milk carton are boxes of individual creamers of real half & half just like you get in a restaurant. There are also small cans of sweetened condensed milk good for coffee and oatmeal. No need for the fake stuff just because you are camping.
I love sweetened condensed milk! I'm a milk snob and insist on whole milk in my coffee if at all possible and even then there are good brands and ones that don't taste as good. Thank you Carol, I'm going to go make some coffee now.
Nice video I thought gassifier would have been good choice but I don't like stinky things!! I guess it can be used at night to look at 🔥 fire & cook marshmallows on a stick for gramcrackers for a treat! Hot dogs on a stick it's a snack cooker & a fire lamp or a camping lava lamp gas-fired light?
Personally I prefer the gasifier stove and have used one for a few years now. This is my go to stove anytime. Make your wood chunks bigger, say 1”x3/4” and fill in the gaps with narrower pieces. 3” long is a good length and be sure to stack the wood vertically on end. Let the flame gasify first, you have got cooking heat for 35 to 40 minutes.
Thanks Keith, but that I've had that particular stove for a coupe of years now and it's just a bad design. I just bought one with a higher collar on the top that works a lot better. If you want you can see the difference in this video: ua-cam.com/video/EkWBcREA_H4/v-deo.html
I really love your videos Rick. Throwing out those tidbits like the common law marriage just as some spice to the video. Thank you and keep up the great work, Philip in Calgary.
Here's a little hint from my Girl Scount days back in the early 60's...... If you put a little dish soap on the bottom of your pots and up the sides a little, when you are cooking over an open fire, spread it around and when you are done cooking merely wipe it off with a paper towel and your pan is as good as new.
What's on the floor is usually me just droning along. Linda watches my "Finished" videos and recommends where to cut, then I just do what I'm told. Lol!

I'm not familiar with any of these stoves, so I found this very interesting. I keep a little butane stove handy for when the power goes out . I got it for about $20 an an Asian food market. I get the canisters from a restaurant supply store, and keep about half a dozen on hand. But I love having something I can use without buying canisters. Meanwhile, A YT channel, Justin Credible, is a guy who lives full time in Vancouver BC in usually a Class C or B+ which he renovates and installs a wood burning stove inside. I don't remember what they're called, but I think they are often used on boats. He fixes up his rigs, lives in them for a while, then sells and starts all over with something different, but always with a wood burning stove inside. Justin Credible - you might enjoy checking him out. I noticed you have a propane stove in your cargo trailer. His look very similar, but with wood fuel instead of propane. When the power goes out here, it sure is nice to still be able to make a nice, fresh cup of hot coffee.
We started out with a wood burner in the trailer but, even though the heat was nice, it was not very convenient when traveling because of the ash (not being able to drive until it was all out and trouble finding places to dump it). That's why we went to the "vented" propane heater. But we still sometimes use it when camping because it's just nice to hear the fire.
@@gonagain You are a God send of information that's so wonderful in not having to reinvent the wheel. Thanks for sharing your experiences of what does and does not work for you, and why. It's much appreciated.
Your videos are always enjoyable and relaxing to watch. I believe if the pot support legs were taller the gasifier stove would work better. Oops. someone below already said that. I think I told you before that one of my daughters always said I was full of random bits of information. I told her they used to be complete stories, however, I have forgotten most of the story.
Similar to Kansas common law. Thanks for the stove review. After this past summer (I ended up on the road before I was ready. Family needs) I did find out that I would like to have a quick/small set up.
By the way... A little swish of that boiling water in that frying pan, a quick swish, maybe a few instant potato flakes, could have used that fond for a lovely sauce. Looked good as it was, anyway.
@@gonagain No. I'm bouncing between family right now. Help Mom, help sis, take refuge with friend helping me get road Worthy.... Boing boing boing... Which makes saving for a rig maddening slow.
Hi Gary, I tried a taller, ventilated collar and it still didn't work very well. I Got a different one with a tall collar and it's a lot better. One person said to not pack them too tight with wood so that they can breathe better and that may help. I need to try that. Thanks for watching!
If you completely give up on that gasifier you might try to drill some holes around the top edge. It looks like the pots are cutting off proper air flow.
I like the one you use. I built the one similar to the one in the middle, except their problem is the legs on their unit which hold the pot up are too short not allowing for air to flow around whatever you're cooking with🙄. Linda had a great idea for lunch & I'll be keeping her idea for my road travels. I've never seen the little milk containers, but I use the ones in the size. 👍👍 On the video PS... Thanks for the Jeopardy knowledge😉
Wondering if that gasifier stove had a taller pot stand (maybe just 2 inches higher) if that would maintain the smoke free burn without choking the flame.
Hi John. I tried that with a tin can, cut like a crown, but it wasn't any better. I think it needs to be higher. I've mostly given up on this type of stove myself and prefer the square folding stoves.
i have one of those round gasifier stoves and i really like it, but my top is different, holds the pot higher over the stove. my bigist complaint is if i am preparing and cooking at the same time the fire burns low, and it takes a minute to get it going again, so its hot then cold than hot again. works great if you have one person cooking and another feeding the fire. i love it because it cooks quick and dosen't use much fuel. if i was in a car i would use a Colman stove, but backpacking its great because it's light and small (if your break it down into its 4 parts) and you don't have to carry fuel.' i haven't tried the other 2, but suspect they use a lot more fuel, and if i was going to do something like those, i would just make a smal camp fire.
I bought a firebox folding wood stove but it seems that I’m always in a hurry to pack up and move on and I end up using my butane MSR pocket rocket instead of building a stick fire. Maybe I need to slow down like you said. I do like an alcohol stove when I’m going light.
This last September we made a trip through eastern Oregon, Nevada and Utah and had fire bans all the way. Good thing we had the propane burner! Thanks for watching Chris!
Yes, you're right! Montana never had the waiting period for common law marriage and it's a leftover from the "Circuit Preacher" days, when the preacher only showed up every so often, if at all.
So what time is lunch? Interesting video Rick. I have a little gasifier stove that I made out of cans when I lived in Alaska. It burns much better than the gasifier stove you demonstrated. I think the challenge with your stove is the pot sits to close to the top of stove not allowing enough airflow.
I made a ventilated spacer to go on top that was 2 inches higher, but it didn't work and at that point I gave up. But it was fun playing with it! I want to see the one you made.
@@gonagain it just need taller pot holder to raise the pot so that the draft can increase in order to increase the oxygen intake at the bottom. Otherwise you nee a small fan.
OH MY GOD! Thanks for letting me know I have two wives in Montana. LOL. Actually two ex girlfriends. Ok seriously though, I have the heavy wood stove like the one from backwoodsman. I have never used it, although i do have an alcohol stove and an msr butane that I use regularly. I guess I like both Butane and alcohol for the ease and convenience. I never really gave thought to using a wood stove. I defiantly will need to give it a try, wood is free. Love your channel, keep wandering the west. I hope to make it back to Montana soon, I miss my adopted home.
Wooooo !!!! I didn’t know that a Regular person could Officiate a marriage, very odd but Ultimately Very Understandable . Someone Who Knows and Loves Both Parties Should be the Ones Who Should Join The Two. I Luv it !!!!! something I never would have known if I were not told about it, but very interesting. I didn’t see When this video was made, but if Recently, I Wish them all the Best 👍🏻🙏👌❤️❤️❤️
Grrrr....the gasifier should be your favorite (at least for boiling water) because it puts out the most heat and the least smoke. But the top is built wrong! It needs taller pot supports so it doesn’t kill the draft. Stupid design flaw. And lunch looks awesome!
Interesting video..! Wood burner stoves are awesome. Linda got one of the 3 common law marriage Montana qualifications correct, and that's both of you telling the world you are married. Living together like a married couple and not claiming to be married is only cohabitation. Sharing expenses and buying stuff together is only known as community property. Ask me how I know..! :-) Thanks for the video...
Yes you're right, you have to meet all three to be officially hitched in Montana. My daughter and now son-in-law did that and that's how I learned about it. They got their license and had a regular wedding at a later date. I hope you survived your experience ok!
jeffrey graf. My thought too. Nothing a coat hanger and duct tape cant fix. Also needs to figure a way to raise it up to counter height. Getting too old to bend over.
I just put my conversion cargo trailer on UA-cam search under Brian Swezey . After I got it done I went for a week that ended up to be 3 weeks at 3 different places. But I enjoyed just cooking and making Cowboy coffee in the morning. And talking about milk ,I love milk so I take plenty of powdered milk with me.
The middle is called a solo stove. You need to let it burn more before putting a pan/pot on. And the you have is way to big for it to properly burn as advertised.
I know Im a late comer to this video, but its still a great one. But when she said "that sounded weird" I bout died laughing...and the look on his face. Also, I prefer the larger stove. Larger cook surface and it looks great as just a camp fire...in a box.
So which Lixada is that? Type 2? Whats the difference of the type 1 & 3? Got lost on the amazon page - Just linked me around trying to get to the info. 😨 Also is the one there you didn't like a miniture version of the solo campfire thingy?
It looks like a miniature of the big one. This is an early Lixada, but there is still a stove just like it being made. As a big fireplace it would be great, but putting a pan on top chokes the air too much.
@@gonagain Thank you. I've seen the big solo stoves. Never understood why those in the hugh Class A's & toy haulers carry them since most all glamping sites have a fire ring/pit lol Love your remote camp sites. I live across from BLM land here in CA. Thankfully most head up to Joshua Tree Natl Park. Lots off cool areas out here off the main camp areas people head to. Thanks!
Ok Raven, but first have to begin by saying that Linda is a fantastic cook. That being said, this was just "Annie Chun's" from the local grocery store. They're actually really good and Linda will usually add something, like the baby bok choy you see in the video. Not bad for camping and road trips.

I think I told you before that one of my daughters always said I was full of random bits of information. I told her they used to be complete stories, however, I have forgotten most of the story.
That's funny Jim! Linda and I got a kick out of that and I will pass this along to my own daughters.
Very good video. Thanks
Or a great gravy! Are you on the road now?
@@gonagain No. I'm bouncing between family right now. Help Mom, help sis, take refuge with friend helping me get road Worthy.... Boing boing boing... Which makes saving for a rig maddening slow.
Raise the pot up about 2-3" and it should help alot with a cleaner burn.
Use with a spud pipe. Its being choked off.
Hi Scott! I did another video where I tried to elevate the pot on a ring to see if that would work. It's here: ua-cam.com/video/EkWBcREA_H4/v-deo.html
👍👍 On the video
PS... Thanks for the Jeopardy knowledge😉
That was a couple of Annie Chun's noodle videos that we had along, but the steak and baby bok choy really helped! Thanks Mona.
It sounds like the one you have is better than the one in my video. Since then I bought one with a higher collar on top and it's a lot better.
A great fun and informative video.
Thanks Todd, I'm tryin!
Another great video, you have to tread carefully in the matrimonial department in Montana.
@@gonagain Sure thing, I will look for it soon. I'm working on the deck putting a oil finish on it. Making hay while the weather's holding.
@@explorer867 I understand that! I was up in the roof this morning checking things over. We literally went from summer to winter, no rain, just snows.
@@gonagain it just need taller pot holder to raise the pot so that the draft can increase in order to increase the oxygen intake at the bottom. Otherwise you nee a small fan.
@@gonagain ODD, I was going to say it needs to be higher but that didn't work Eh?
Hello Alan, Montana is still beautiful and those girls probably miss you. I think the wood stoves are just fun.
New subscriber and I like your channel. Happy Thanksgiving! Cheers from Armington MT!!
Thanks for subscribing neighbor!
Yes, and it was definitely a highlight in my life to be able to do that!
You guys are great!
Thank you and so are you!
I have a toaster oven in my 5x8 cargo trailer.. and 120v elect hot stove.
Thanks for the video...
Yes you're right, you have to meet all three to be officially hitched in Montana. My daughter and now son-in-law did that and that's how I learned about it. They got their license and had a regular wedding at a later date. I hope you survived your experience ok!
Have you tried raising the pot somehow on the gasifier?
jeffrey graf.
My thought too. Nothing a coat hanger and duct tape cant fix. Also needs to figure a way to raise it up to counter height. Getting too old to bend over.
I did raise it up 2 inches but that wasn't enough. I also tried burning pellets in it, which worked but didn't help any so I finally gave up.
Gasifier needs to have the pot holders extended up to allow the air to flow when the pot is in place.
I bought a different one with a taller collar (like you just said) and it works very well.
Linda and I are planning to escape south in January. Hope to see you on the road sometime!
jejejej firemen jejejej good video Mr
lol..... as always good stuff.
Thanks cold spring!
pretty neat to learn about new friend Ruthie here
Thank you for watching Ruthie!
Many years ago in Ohio if two people sign any legal document like a lease etc you were considered common law married.
The middle is called a solo stove. You need to let it burn more before putting a pan/pot on. And the you have is way to big for it to properly burn as advertised.
Thanks Doug, I'll be trying that. Maybe it will burn cleaner that way too.
FYI - MANY people love to thatch you eat what you prepare/cook😋
Thank you, LA Gunn. Maybe we'll do more in the future. We rarely eat out so we do cook a lot!
Good to know
Nice stoves! I'll stick with my Kelly kettle .
That Kelly is a nice stove. I hope to get one someday.
I know Im a late comer to this video, but its still a great one. But when she said "that sounded weird" I bout died laughing...and the look on his face. Also, I prefer the larger stove. Larger cook surface and it looks great as just a camp fire...in a box.
We still look for opportunities to grill a big steak on that stove!
hmm i think i made a mistake. i have not tested the my solo stove. i wonder if it has the same issue as yours?
What kind of noodles were those? Cooked and then frozen?
Actually, cooked and then just packaged. "Annie Chun's" is the brand name and we take them traveling a lot.
So which Lixada is that? Type 2? Whats the difference of the type 1 & 3?
Got lost on the amazon page - Just linked me around trying to get to the info. 😨
Also is the one there you didn't like a miniture version of the solo campfire thingy?
It looks like a miniature of the big one. This is an early Lixada, but there is still a stove just like it being made. As a big fireplace it would be great, but putting a pan on top chokes the air too much.
@@gonagain Thank you. I've seen the big solo stoves. Never understood why those in the hugh Class A's & toy haulers carry them since most all glamping sites have a fire ring/pit lol
Love your remote camp sites. I live across from BLM land here in CA. Thankfully most head up to Joshua Tree Natl Park. Lots off cool areas out here off the main camp areas people head to.
Thanks!
Drill some holes in it so it gets air
Udon noodles? Care to divulge the sauce you used?
Ok Raven, but first have to begin by saying that Linda is a fantastic cook. That being said, this was just "Annie Chun's" from the local grocery store. They're actually really good and Linda will usually add something, like the baby bok choy you see in the video. Not bad for camping and road trips.
My son married his sister and grandmother. Keepin' it all in the family. (BTW, he's an ordained minister.)
I guess!
When did you guys Meet, how'd you meet and Where ? If you care to share, or maybe you should make a video on that subject. Thanks for this very informative video, I appreciate it very much 👍♥️
I met Linda in Lahaina, Maui in 1974. I was just traveling through when I saw her and was knocked off my feet. We were both in our early 20s.

You need a raiser to lift the pot old coat hanger make a frame to put pot on
That's exactly right. I got a different stove with a higher riser that works much better.
I Realy like that larger stove. Steak😃😃
Yeah, it's hard to beat the one that does steak! Thanks for watching Bill.
Aaha, i love saying "Bok Choy". 😂😎 love eating Bok Choy too, 😁
Have someone weld taller fingers on the gasaphier !! It's a mini rocket stove. .needs the up draft. .!
I bought a different one with a higher collar and it works a LOT better! Thanks for watching!
the gasafier needs more space under pot
Yep, it sure does!
I heard in Texas all u need to do is walk down the sidewalk holding hands.
LOL!
👍👍👌👌
The pot just needs to be up higher
Yes, as designed it smothers the flame.
I like the first too I'm think I might getv1 ty
Hi TERRI, if you click on the link in my video description you'll get the same one like mine that also comes with the nylon case go put it in. Thanks for watching!
@@gonagain I'll do that thanks again
Is that also in Calif?
The long is the rule in
Calif? I know a couple
Who has waited years
To get married untill they can afford it!
Every state varies, so you would have to look up CA's laws.
Like a horse it's easier to get one than get rid of it.
I'll stick with my FIREBOX.
I like the Firebox stove myself. I think I still have room for another stove too.
I would have thought the gasifier was the most efficient.wrong
There are other gasifier stoves available that has more distance between the flame and the pan. Those would be better than what I had. Thanks for watching!
I was married to a woman from MIchigan's UP for a number of years and she was like a gasifier. Always smoking and stinking things up pretty good. And she couldn't cook either.
Dang, that's just bad luck!
Need a cast iron skillet
Cast iron is definitely the best. Thanks for watching Brian.
