  • Marianne Faithfull has had quite a life. More than 50 years after her first recording, she released one of her best albums in 2018 and, thankfully, she seems to have got over the latest of her health problems in 2020. The South Bank Show tells her story through interviews and archive footage interspersed with live performances. An excerpt from the video for Broken English has been removed due to copyright.

I adore Marianne Faithfull. I have admired her since the 1960's when I first heard "As Tears go By". I think she is so talented and spot on. One of the best female singers.

Remarkable woman. I'd take Marianne's singing over any homogenised banal Auto-tune anyday. Authentic, honest and true. Pure dignity and character of human emotion. A bona fide survivor. Love her ❤️

How fabulous to see her on the Francis bacon documentary where she saved the day by being intermittently interspaced between Francis's violent dubious nasty pernicious sadistic inhumane boyfriends!! What a fabulous woman with so much depth in her personality which is multifaceted and contains facets most females lack! Still seriously sexy!

Pretty clueless about connecting the dots re: Me Too issue when asked in the series of recent interviews. Her being used by men, the Brit media, her version of love, angry lyrics then saying a pretty, clever girl could handle sexual inappropriateness, aggressions that are at the core of Me Too. What if the unpretty ones couldn't handle aggression? She makes it a woman's problem, like you just handle it (her early years are a testimony to deep entrenched Brit sexism, and someone ill prepared to steer her own course, swallowed up in the heady fishbowl, delusional almost from other interviews while young and clueless. Doesn't get the issue. Be smart and there is no issue, and not seeing relations as being about men's problems, social roles, their sense of entitlement. Not a sympathetic icon for a generation of women. Knows the ugliness is out there, speaks of it, was very angry for years, but, funny, resorts to very conventional statements. Too myopic IMHO to see or admit the big issues. Mythologizing her pain, albeit very effectively.

    • @gracewoodard9134

@@Taryngracia Thanks. I tend to be loathe to categorize personality disorders, but she became sad and collapsed and self destructive. What she went through was in ways brutal. but is self destruction the starting point, the chicken or the egg? Dunno. Sometimes things just happen too fast and knock us off our feet. As women we accept so much that comes our way. She played in a world of excess. and it's hard to understand while in it that world that attention and fame and intense relationships don't add up to caring. And this seems true running both ways with men and women. She is my generation. Getting a real grasp of what is happening...the lesson of life. Hard to get. The world was so fresh, tempting, and jumping in, was good and dangerous. She swam in an IMO overstimulated and consuming environment. Funny how we come into our better selves late in life. Funny how restraint and caution were not a part of our world then, and so true now... There is always something out there, if not within.
