I so needed to hear this message today. Perfect timing. Thanks to you, I am recommitting to following my heart, and ignoring the doubts. Thank you.
Maris Whetstone That is amazing. Go for it!!! ❤️
Heart!! Actually what I needed to hear. Sometimes I get embarrassed because I am performing the simple version of a song and feel that I should play the more difficult piece but I am self taught so I do the best I can. I am a play by the heart person I need to be able to feel the music in order to play well and sometimes the more simple pieces tug at my heart strings more.
Just do what you do, and put your heart into it. There's nothing to be ashamed of! You're doing great!
Very true
Heart. Great words. I wasted too much time by being overawed by other people's 'talent'.
I am amazed when people enjoy my heartfelt but simple playing. Thank you.
Heart , I definitely agree. My harp playing is just mediocre but I still enjoy playing my beautiful harp.
Thank you for the compliment. I get inspiration from watching Alexandra Tihonova playing. She’s awesome. Will never be in her league. Now I must start practising. Just simple but ever so enjoyable songs. Thank you. Brian.
In other words: "Play with harp-felt passion. :)
❤ enjoyment can even be experienced by listening to one gently played string fade away to silence. Play. Enjoy.
That is extremely wise, thank-you Cliff!
Christy-Lyn's music
☺ You're welcome. I learned this accidentally one quiet evening while listening to all the beautiful changes just one string makes as It fades away into the silence. Blessings. 🙂
Great video!
So encouraging .thank u so much.
I am a new subscriber and SO excited to find you! You are the most encouraging, cheerful, positive and motivating teacher there could ever be! Like a ‘best friend!” for the harp player! I am going to watch each and every video and get going again on my harp. I had a few lessons and then lost my teacher to retirement. I just love the harp and am going to believe you that it is “never too late!” I am 68 and kind of.a one-handed player, but I am going to GET THIS! Thank you SO much! I have some health challenges, but I have a lovely floor harp and I just love it. Now, can’t wait!
Wonderful, glad you’re feeling inspired!! You can do this.
Heart!!!! Thank you for saying this, Christy-Lyn! I was blessed from the start with a harp teacher who emphasized heart, not competitiveness or striving always for the technically difficult, and I think this was SO important to what I do with music today. It helped me to battle the self-conscious, self-critical side of me and step out of the box to see something beautiful that I felt I could share with people.
That's wonderful, thanks for sharing that my friend! What are you up to with your harp playing these days? Good to hear from you :)
Thank YOU for sharing :) and good to hear from you! I've been doing well. I had a great time playing at a coffee house last week and some Mother's Day events before that, so it's been a good month :) I've particularly enjoyed bringing back some of my Scottish tunes and rearranging them..I actually just uploaded a new video from the coffee house of Farley Bridge by Duncan Chisolm! Anyway, we'll chat more in an email soon... xoxo
I think my desire for looking into playing the harp is just playing beautiful, soothing therapeutic songs and sounds.
I think to gain motivation, all one needs to do is watch your videos 😄 Thank you for sharing your perspective!
Thank-you so much, that's a lovely thing to say!
❤️❤️❤️- Thanks Christie - this is very helpful !
Such a pleasure!! I'm so pleased it helped :)
Perfect timing for me too ! Thanks a lot for this
Wonderful! I'm so glad to hear that. Have you been feeling hopeless with your harp playing recently?
I play a game called name that tune while performing gospel music at nursing homes and I realized that if I play the music with both treble clef and bass clef sometimes the patients don’t recognize the piece but if you remove the bass clef and play just the melody their faces light up and they will sing along with you. After they recognize the song than I repeat the piece playing the way it’s written so yes simple is better at times. Playing this game also helps them with their memory because I have them tell me the name of the piece and they really enjoy playing along.
Rebecca Jackson That sounds lovely! What a special thing to be able to have that kind of impact on their lives. Well done for giving of yourself ❤️
Motivation is definitely key. I’m learning the violin on my own and i struggle with motivation. I didn’t feel like I was making any progress. What I didn’t know is that my sister had recorded me at the beginning and again after several months. She played me both recordings and I could really hear the difference! That gave me the motivation to pick it back up and keep going. Progress is progress even if it seems a little slow.
Oh yes that definitely helps to see your progress. Well done to your sister, and well done to you for pressing on!
Heart!! You're awesome Christy-Lyn! Thank you so much for this encouragement! I am having a little trouble with comparison. I just started the harp five months ago, but I've been watching the videos of people who are way farther ahead than I am at 5 months, and I practice a lot! Could be I'm not practicing correctly (though I'm trying to) because I don't have a teacher. I am taking your course, but don't have someone (other than myself!) really watching and critiquing me, however, I can't really afford a personal teacher right now. Maybe someday in the future. 🙂 Thank you for your cheerful self! You brighten my day!😊❤
ALOHA, Dear Christy-Lyn!!!! I just now viewed this video!!!! I totally agree-talent is absolutely overstated!!!! It is always best when it is from the heart!!!!
So true!! Thanks for that, Dennis :)

Corazón! Heart! Thank you for your videos!

Heart! I really agree!

Heart, I definitely agree. I’ve been playing concert harp for twenty years. But I don’t consider myself a harpist. My harp playing is also just mediocre and average. I just play the harp for my own personal pleasure. Thank you Christy.
Thank you so much, you're a motivation, for I'm just at the moment of feeling myself untalented in playing harp.
Aw, that’s not a nice feeling. Is there something in particular you are struggling with?
Christy-Lyn's music hi, thanks for replying. Yes, Im struggling of playing the pieces smoothly, I will stop somehow to look at the sheets and will sometimes accidental touch another strings making unpleasant noises.

well i'm not a harpist (yet :-D), but i've played piano all my life and i also feel like talent comes from the heart - in my school years when my teacher gave me a piece that i didn't like, i couldn't play it nicely no matter how i tried, even if i technically mastered it and i felt terribly untalented.. if i got a piece that i loved, i learned it much easier, it sounded really good (even to me) and people told me how talented i was :-D

Heart... :-) Lovely thoughts, Christy-Lyn. I do have a quick question, though. I feel very motivated, and also feel I need to spend more time practicing, but all the harp material I come across says even five minutes a day is good for practice and an hour is totally sufficient. Well, I do a half hour a day but it's been two years so far and at the rate I am going it'll be ages before I play well (it seems to me) having so little practice time and not being naturally talented (at least in my mindset so far). How long did you practice the harp when you started (you clearly have talent so this isn't to compare but just for logistics to know)? How much did playing the piano help you learn faster (I don't play the piano)? I'm not giving up and own a beautiful Celtic Dusty Strings harp so it's a commitment for life. But some people practice their instruments--violin, flute, cello, et al.--for hours a day. Maybe I should, too, if I want to progress at a decent (not getting discouraged) speed on the harp?
Hi Regina. Half an hour a day should be enough to see some good prfgress. When I started I practiced on average 2 hours a day, but I was only working a part-time job and that was an unusual time of my life. I've learned many different instruments over my lifetime and sometimes I practiced for less than 30 minutes a day and saw significant progress. I would definitely say that experience on another instrument makes a huge difference, but I would guess that there might be things you could change about how and what you practice, rather than the amount of time. For me to give more specific feedback I would need to chat to you in person and see what you've been doing up to this point. Maybe you would like a once-off consultation so we could chat about it? If so, send me an email and we can set it up :)
Well done for your passion and commitment - it really comes through in your words. Putting your heart into it and really caring is so much more important than anything else. Keep up the good work! ❤️

I have learned a great deal and your wonderful videos has encouraged me a lot. As I have mentioned in the past I play harp on left shoulder using left hand for trebles and right for bass. It kind of discourages me when i see almost all people playing the other side. I started playing myself in 1989 I have finally come up with some real pretty playing in all that time. I have tried the other side using right for treble and left for bass. I cannot coordinate and I do not know why. Could you give me some insight on this? Thanks you very much.
Hey Jon. I don’t think it should make a difference that you play the other way around. You can just take all the instructions in my videos and mirror them with the opposite hands. I wouldn’t bother trying to swap now, I’m sure what you’re doing works fine! The only struggle might be lever changes during a piece, because you have the levers on the other side. But perhaps someday a harp maker will make a harp for you with levers on the other side? 😊
@@LearningtheHarp I make harps but not often. I have considered making one with levers on right side. I feel that when I am not around anymore no one would want it because of the side levers. I can play "Over the Rainbow very well the classic style but there is one sharp lever action on the song. For now I just run through the first run twice (The middle part)....Vincent my 26 string harp has a beautiful voice. I made it from an old 100 year old maple table top and it has a spruce sound board. I would love to send you a pic of it but don't know how I would do it. I could send it via an email....Thanks for your wonderful videos. They are uplifting and makes me want to continue. I mentioned to someone about creating a sharp lever that could could move 2 positions. He is very creative and is looking into it. This way a Celtic harp could be tuned the same as a concert harp and flats could be played. If its possible, he can do it.

Expensive instrument ? About ......?
When people ask me how much a harp costs, I always ask them how much a car costs. There's a HUGE range, depending on the size and quality of the harp :)
Are you reading from a script? Every now and then, I see you gaze down.
I had notes written down so I don’t forget what I wanted to say 😊👍🏻
