I agree completely! Yes, you should learn the note names to be able to identify them individually, but you don't read them individually when playing. Recognising intervals and common phrase shapes (and rhythmic patterns) is so much faster! Great advice.
This is ever so helpful!! I'm the type of player you mentioned, who usually only learns challenging pieces from sheet music, and then I memorise it so I don't even use the sheet music anymore. It's a good thing I still have my beginner books laying about - they'll be great for sheet reading practice! Thank you 🙏🏻✨

I play the piano but I found your video helpful, thanks! It is true you have to change to the right sight reading mindset. When I’m too conscious about every little detail, I find it goes much less smoothly. Another tip I got from a different video is: when you run into a chord and you’re not sure you’re going to land on all the right notes, just play one or two notes of the chord but keep playing non stop!

YES！would be amazing if you can have a sight reading traing course with daily practice and learning materials about it. Beside intervals, I think a lot times a little understanding on chords would also be helpful since those chord progressions are similar to “vocabulary” in our language :)
I know I stepped away from the heart for a while because I was frustrated not being able to read the music as fluently as I thought I should be able to. I had a friend who is a music teacher for the public school system and I picked up the recorder. What I quickly realized is that once I actually identified the notes as you mentioned identifying the letters and word I could read music in my mind knew exactly which fingering I needed to play the music. My mind not only helping me with the fingering but in my mind also could identify the note. I'm going to go back to the harp which means I'm going to be starting a little bit back at the beginning. But I'm hoping by playing the note identifying it saying it will do a similar thing as it did for the recorder. When I first took up the harp I was just memorizing fingerings and once I had the peace memorized I didn't look at the music any further. Thanks for the video. I'm hoping it's not going to be too painful for me to get back to playing my harp.

I seem to place as I am playing along instead of placing the whole bracket on the overlapping brackets. Glad it was helpful! The bass clef is often harder to learn, but it’s just because we spend less time reading the notes because often the left hand part is simpler and there’s not a lot happening. If you spend some extra time reading and playing through the bass clef of lots of different new pieces, you’ll catch up and it won’t feel so hard 😃

I learned to play the violin as a child. Then the piano. I’m playing around with the mandolin, guitar and harp. For some reason I play while visualizing the violin. It makes no sense at all, but it works

Carol Kampus also has a handout with the various shapes. I can’t remember the name of the handout. I need to review it. The shapes really help especially when you get the anchor note

I might actually start by creating workshops, and then later film courses from the same content. Before seeing this video I thought it was good that I'm playing with an app to teach me the names of notes but now I see it will be more efficient to play directly on my harp from now on. Hi! My levers are the Lyon & Healy levers that came with my harp, so you can only get these if you have a lyon & Healy harp. I suggest you contact your harp maker and ask them what levers are available for your harp 😊
