Something with a Spanish windlass mechanism tensioned to a few hundred pounds and a bowling ball would probably be fun, but with anyone else being around the house it's not quite worth it.
Next week’s video: *Today for Mouse Trap Monday, we’re gonna catch a thief.* *Now I don’t want the thief we caught to go to waste. Let’s go see if the wild animals like eating thieves.*
@@Al_Dente-d1p Lol. Tell that to Gboard. Idiot. It's obviously a typo caused by auto correct. Also how about you capitalize that 1st letter in your post. "Moron"
Stolen by no good cowards. Sounds like it's time security cams in the barn as well. Also the thief is probably someone that watches this channel and lives nearby. They probably knew you had a bunch of expensive equipment set up at night
Now that they know there is good stuff in the barn, you can be sure the thief (or their friends) will be back. If you put in cameras, mount them out of reach and lock up your ladders.
I put up IP cameras all around my house. They record on a server in my house using Blue Iris software. I got them to catch shady characters in the neighborhood and neighbor shenanigans but they pick up wildlife too. The best thing is they are continuously recording so even if they don't trigger motion I can still find out what happened.
A daddy mole, a momma mole and a baby mole were traveling in a tunnel in this order. The father mole said; "Momma Mole, do you smell syrup?" Momma Mole replied; "No Daddy Mole, I don't smell syrup. Baby Mole do you smell syrup?" Baby Mole said; "I don't smell anything but mole-asses!"
Most important in trapping moles is to find their active runs. Those mounds that they make in the center of your yard are not it. They often make excursions from the regular runs to look for food. That is what those piles in the middle of your yard are. You will also find piles near the runs where they excavate the excess dirt to the surface. What you want to look for are the actual runs that run horizontally, and not up to the surface. Most often, active runs are along walls, under fence lines or along and underneath lawn edgings or sidewalks. You will see mounded up runs if you look closely. Most times the runs are less than 6 inches down. Place your scissor traps like Shawn shows in those main runs. You can also lightly squish down those runs to see if the mole digs them out again and makes the domed trail again. That way you know you have an active run.
Hey, my name is Sterling too, Sterling King. Your son was very good in the video. I am a pest control operator and have my own company and your videos have been priceless for me and I’ve shared them hundreds and hundreds of times to many different Pest Control operators and owners. You’re absolutely fantastic.
Sounds like you need to get some of those Amcrest 4K security cameras I recommended a while back. While I suggested them for use as trail cameras, you need them to secure your property!
Had to look it up. Obviously if they’ve become a nuisance then you must control that, but if not I just read they can be good for the environment. “Moles play a beneficial role in the management of soil and the control of undesirable grubs and insects. By tunneling and shifting soil particles, moles permit better aeration of the soil, help dry out sod, and enable humus (organic matter) to travel deeper into the soil.”
Shawn, sorry to hear of your camera loss. My Sister and Brother-in-law owned a huge ranch/farm outside Klamath Falls, Oregon. It amazed me how many times his barns-sheds & shops were robbed. Makes you sick.
Check the 3 or 4 closest pawn shops to you. Call police. And enter your device info into Ebay and craigslist, set alerts for them if you can. People don't follow through with trying to get their stolen items back, and that's a shame. A good add on video would be trying to locate your Stolen items. Start close to home and branch from there. Love your content.
From now on definitely from now on put a camera somewhere out of view watching the other cameras, just do it 100% of the time. Trust me it'll be the best UA-cam video you ever made!
Ever since I saw your gopher hawk video, I’ve been able to kick those little diggers off the property. Last year I used it to handle a gopher at a friend’s house but it turned out to be a mole instead of a gopher. No problem using it on moles. Lots easier than burying a trap underground.
“Anything used over 100 years must be the best” - I would agree you most of the time. Yet, we still use lead acid batteries in our cars, it’s a 100+ year old tech, and it sucks!! Thanks for the work you do Shawn... Keep up the fantastic work!... And, it sounds like you need a 2-legged trap...
Yes. We have 4 Zmodo cameras, that work well, especially for the price. They upload constantly plus they have motion sensors to send a notification. You'd have to have wifi in the barn, though.
For the interested, biscuit stems from French, made up of bi- (twice) and -cuit (baked). They are harder and more brittle due to the twofold baking process.
I've got an alarm system that notifies me if there is any motion in the barn. It's attached to my house system and texts me if there is any movement in the barn. Don't know if you want me to say the name of the brand here, but I really hope you catch them. Maybe you need to make a bigger trap for your new pests. :)
I'm a mole catcher here in the UK and use a Talpex type trap, which is very similar to what you were using. That tin can lid is a good idea, I'm going to give that a try. There's not many animals that will eat a mole. Maybe the odd dog that will gulp one down, but not even the crows and magpies eat them. I look forward to you catching your local thieves. Scumbags are everywhere..... My favourite biscuit has to be a digestive. 🇬🇧
Just yesterday I caught a mole using the Gopherhawk. I bought it based on your video a couple years ago. Caught my mole in less than 12 hours and I disturbed my lawn much less.
Really sorry to hear about your theft, never a fun time. Thanks for the insite on trail camps as that was one that I had, recording time. Didn't realize how short that they were, thought that they could be adjusted for record time. Best Always to you Shawn.
Something to consider, if you have a power supply where you’re filming traps, look into wyze cams. They are about 30$ each and come with sd cards and record in 1080p, although it’s not hd. They also have night mode with ir lights. There’s a 25$ option that doesn’t come with sd cards. Anyway you can view them in real time if you have WiFi, but can still record without WiFi. I have them viewing my house. You can also set them up to send you an alert if they detect motion or sound. Very neat little cameras that are a great value for what you get.
I love scones, and a make loaf sized version known as Irish Soda Bread with baking soda and buttermilk. I like to add an egg, (which isn't really necessary) along with dried raisins, cranberries, walnuts and pecans. It keeps for a really long time. My friends say that I just use it as a, "Butter Delivery Vehicle" because of the large amount of butter I put on mine whenever I cut off a slice.
kind of a disclaimer: moles are endangered and protected in some countries. I.e. in Germany one is not allowed to kill or catch moles, only ultrasound is allowed to drive them away
Hey Shawn I forgot to tell you I was watching this guy that made a giant mouse trap it was so strong he had to install a motorized winch like contraption to set it ,the trap was the size of a small car like those electric 2 seaters he was smashing all kinds of things, and when you mentioned the barn thief well....
In my opinion these expensive and difficult traps are not needed. I use a Victor rat trap (like the big mouse trap) to catch moles and pocket gophers that dig tunnels like this. Dig out a spot like Shawn did in the video and set the trap crosswise in the middle. Clear out the tunnel so they can see the light and they will come to repair their tunnel and get caught most of the time. Sometimes they don't spring the trap and manage to close the hole, but most times they get caught. I put a clear plastic tub over the hole with a weight on top to keep it in place, this protects other animals or birds from getting caught. The advantage is you can use cheaper traps and it's just easier to set and use them.
Thanks for posting your videos shawn! Thanks to the video you did on the gopher hawk I was finally able to get rid of the moles in my vegetable garden.
Just found your channel and find it pretty fascinating. Enough so to subscribe! I've used a mole trap that has the spikes in it. Seemed to do the job but the downside is you're never 100% sure other than the trails seem to stop.
As we have said to big live, skid marks and other blemishes in background from demonstrations etc are very acceptable. They hint at action and authenticity! We like that. Bigclive kept his demo table with all skid marks and other blemishes.
There’s something in the urine of moles that will cause dogs to puke immediately. I had trained my dog to hunt and catch moles and every single time she would catch one she would chomp it’s spine to keep it from biting her then she’d go puke.
As regards animals not eating Moles. I have been trapping moles for ten years now (in UK) and find that Foxes will eat Moles. I have photographs of a fox entering my garden and it caught a mole as it surfaced. One of the photo's shows the fox with the mole in its mouth. The Victor Out-O-Sight trap clearly works but there is a lot of 'over kill' involved - the springs are far stronger than required. The scissor trap I use is the very efficient Talpex trap.
Excellent Shawn, just excellent. I hope you do not suffer any more burglaries and please keep up the great and entertaining work. All the best to you and your family.
Great video Shawn. Where You find the time to do all of the things You do amazes me. The studio looks great and it is good that Your kids aren’t camera shy. 🏆
We had a stray friendly cat that caught a mole and ate it. We used to have a mole problem and I couldn't get this style of trap to work so I made my own. It was incredibly dangerous and could only be used in dry soil. I banged a load of long nails in a line through some plastic and wired them alternately to a microwave transformer. Push the mole hill mound down and push the bed of nails into the mound perpendicular to the run. Power it up and wait for the bang when the mole burrows through and touches 2 nails. They instantly explode in a ball of flame but it did eliminate the problem in 1 weekend.
I am So sorry someone stole your equipment, that's a terrible feeling-we had our garage burglarized recently...such a violation knowing people were so close while you were sleeping close by completely unaware of the threat. That still gets to me! Also I LOVE the direction you have been taking the channel! Love the content & also the family. Studio looks amazing!
With modifications I'll be able to catch one now. I found two brand new ones still in the box at Goodwill $4.00 each. My Gophenator did catch the mole, I covered it with garden filter fabric and dirt and grass.
Sorry to hear about the burglary, Shawn! If you know of anyone who is into Arduino or similar, you can build a good setup with motion detector, a GoPro and an IR flashlight. The high pitch noise will be gone, and you can adjust sensitivity and video timing by desire. You get loads of cheap IR flashlights/ lamps on eBay, and you'll have much, much better video quality than from the trail cameras.
I’d contact Matthias wandel about the camera! He programmed his cameras to film the way he wanted them filmed when he came up with the walk the plank mouse trap.. very cool
IMO the spike type traps like those made by Sweeney's and Victor are by far the best mole traps. Much safer, easier to set, less prep work, and highly effective.
I have been using Bushnell trail cameras for years and have never had an issue. You can adjust video length as well. I have two friends that manage properties for whitetail hunting and that's all they use as well. Hope this helps.
Hey shawn ive been in the security camera business for many years.. I would suggest you go with a pro NVR and security cameras, you can use a mic, and run a cable to your house to live view the cameras. They record on motion, or constant, very configurable! -BDR

Wonderful family friendly stuff. Keep up the good work.
The fact you replaced the mole with a plush to be UA-cam appropriate is inexplicably hilarious
LOVE the mammoth sunflower head! Just harvested some of mine and got them to 12 feet tall!!
Hey shawn ive been in the security camera business for many years.. I would suggest you go with a pro NVR and security cameras, you can use a mic, and run a cable to your house to live view the cameras. They record on motion, or constant, very configurable! -BDR
