Neil Innes is the songwriter and performer of this song. It was originally released by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band back in 68, which Neil was a member of at the time.
This guy deserved a lot more credit than he got and because of it I do not think he got the chance to become one of the greats of British comedy (well known). Equal to Python and Milligan in his own right but I still think he is GREAT and see his influence in the background. Thank you for posting
It's a great spoof of amateur talent contest programs, and it's worth noting that this version came before the Hollywood Bowl one. I love the sign "Hendon [Latest news] still raining."
You can tell what kind of musical background a guy came from by what beat he claps on. One and three, classical and rock. Two and four, jazz and blues.
@RileyELFuk Yeah, I realize you are correct. There was another video on UA-cam which mistakenly identified a DIFFERENT actress as Lyn Ashley. But THIS is Lyn Ashley. She also had some very brief cameos on Monty Python's Flying Circus.
maybe not, but big fans tend to do some research... at least I always do when I become hooked on something. and for me, I always noticed him even in the beginning of my fan-years. as that cute boy singing about sir robin.
Actually no; YT has the original around here somewhere (by Innes' original band, the BonzoDog DooDahs), and it's cheerful (more than this; not as much as HB). I guess it's funny, hearing a cheerful song sung depressingly. The Python spirit was in him before he joined (written 10 years-ish prior)
Folks, this is beginning to bother me now. Who is the girl dancing? I haven't seen a lot of Rutland Weekend Television. Someone else said it was Lyn Ashley, but it doesn't look like her--Lyn wasn't that thin, face is different, etc. Does someone have the credits for this episode?
Hi, I'm not british, but a great MP fan and I'd like to know something about the history of this song. I've seen faster version in the 'MP at the hollywood bowl'. Who wrote it? Who is the guy singing? I'd appreciate any answer that gives some info ;] thx
the hollywood bowl version was a lot better because the song was speeded up and rita kept stopping when she shouldn't have. this is actually the real speed. can someone post the hollywood bowl version?
His unmistakable voice and natural songwriting ability mixed with post-psychedelic quirkiness dovetailed with Python.

RIP Mr Urban Spaceman, we'll always love you and your music.
Genius. RIP Neil, thanks mate.👍
Neil was one of the unofficial Python’s but still had some great moments as part of the movies and show.
hahahahahahaha saddddd version!!! I love Neil, are a great Dadaist! Urban Spaceman are one of his best composition...

Well he did compose for python so....
He got a lot of credit from those in the know..
I don't think he wanted to chase the recognition , he was happy as he was .
@@sysiphuscorinth He wrote the songs for The Rutles and played Nast and was Sir Robin’s minstrel im Holy Grail
Sorry he played Ron Nasty
Neil Innes was considered the seventh Python. He's in Holy Grail.
@MichaelKingsfordGray I remember George Harrison, he was one of those Rutles imposters 👍
Who is he in Holy Grail?
@@matthewwaterhouse9925 The guy who sings the Camelot song as well as Brave Sir Robin's lead minstrel.
Neil Innes sings Brave Sir Robin as one of his minstrels

Stuff Neil Innes, I have fallen in love with the tap dancer
Lyn Ashley is the tap dancer here. For the Hollywood Bowl show, Carol Cleveland (the Sixth Python) did the honours.
Infatuated!
A one man band. RIP Neil
The only guy who can say he performed in “Magical Mystery Tour, the Bonzos, the. Rutles and Monty Python, among other things. A HUGE talent.
Oh, THAT's where the bit in "Python At The Hollywood Bowl" came from! :)
Great song. And great tap from Grayson there.
Neil Innes for Silly Party, winning by exclamations 🙂🙂!
Love the tap dancing
Rest in peace. Farewell `Urban Spaceman`
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place! -RIP you vastly underrated genius!
Watched + enjoyed in your honour. Rip.
I grew up with Neil Innes as the wizard in Puddle Lane!!
Me too! :D
Best song... ever!
I wish I could dance like that.
It's a great spoof of amateur talent contest programs, and it's worth noting that this version came before the Hollywood Bowl one. I love the sign "Hendon [Latest news] still raining."
Sad loss, RIP !
It's Carl Weetabix and Rita!
Puts a smile on your dial!
Fantastic! This is one of my all time favourites!
Just had to watch again - thanks Ivory!!
And again!
Once more
You can tell what kind of musical background a guy came from by what beat he claps on. One and three, classical and rock. Two and four, jazz and blues.
I love this!!! Great up thanks.
Rip Neil.

Priceless!!
I'm in love!
This is so Gong Show. In a positive way.
I like this version.
love this song
I liked this song in the faster tempo he sang it in at the Hollywood Bowl. That makes the tempo match the song.
It was produced by Apollo C. Vermouth (a rather famous person hiding behind a silly name) and, i think, Neil won an Ivor Novello for it.
@karlpaananen It is Lyn Ashley.
Great song, last couple of days learned it on guitar. GACDG and EmCGCGAD is all it is but clever song. Love it ...
brilliant
RIP Neil 😞🌌🚀
RIP Urrban Spaceman 1944-2019...

Travel well x
Florence Welch - so talented.
not to forget he is Ron Nasty (and made the songs) in Rutles...
Classic!
@SUPACHARGED I think this is the funniest thing ever on all of UA-cam...and I am not easily amused.
Sheer Poetry
genius
@ivorykisses I think the tap dancing joke works better in the Hollywood Bowl performance since it follows the comedic 'rule of three'.
@karlpaananen I've been equally confused by the actresses on RWT, as Carinthia West isn't always credited on episodes that she's in (IIRC).
Understood. My apologies. I should have realized that there was more than just the one version.

She is certainly light on 'er feet. The singing is alright too, I spose!
What’s the piano he’s playing

Who's the tap dancer?
+Michael Rolton I belive that's Lyn Ashley, an Australian actress.
Also known (at the time) as Mrs Eric Idle
Man this is bizarre!
This video inspired me to play the Lowboy Hi-Hat. What kind of Keyboard is that, the one Neil Innes was playing?
the hollywood bowl version was a lot better because the song was speeded up and rita kept stopping when she shouldn't have. this is actually the real speed. can someone post the hollywood bowl version?
I know the original version, and many other versions. This particular version is supposed to be depressing.
@kyrastube wouldn't come as too big a surprise, Don't remember many places in Python sketches, where Innes looks the way he does here.
what was that organ piece at 0:01?
genius! ROFL!!
When is this from?
Taps on ballet slippers?
Adieu, Mr. Innes.
Im supriced that you say you are a big python-fan and dont know who neil innes is. he was and still is known as "the 7th python"
I like this version better, I think it's supposed to be depressing. It's part of the joke.
Is this a song about drugs?
neil inness genius bonzo dog doo dah band monty python
ROTFL!
I'm confused if this Is DaDa or surrealism. Can any of you readers help?
It's Doo-Dah from the Bonzos.
I like the Hollywood Bowl version better. At least then, it was, I daresay, bouncier. THIS is just depressing.
La tristezza... very sad... rotfl!
NOt as good as the monty pythons one at the hollywood bowl
Hm. Not really funny... but Protest Song is great!
Hilariously Uninspiring
this is the worst thing i have ever seen
