This was a great video, Rob. What you said about challenging filmmakers while maintaining respect for their knowledge and experience is something more people need to hear. Too often people are so focused on arguing or chiming in that they’re blind to how obvious and devoid of insight their response/argument is.
That segment on elevated horror is something I’ve certainly had my own annoyances with. Horror has always had more to say and offer than it’s commonly given credit for. Like the red headed stepchild of cinema.
If you ever want someone to discuss horror with, I’d be there with bells on!

Supernatural elements do not need explanation, they need confirmation in universe of the film so not to break the logic of the story, that would be my guess. What I'm trying to say (and quit poorly) is if you have supernatural elements in your story establish it before the climax. For example mentioned The VVitch did it with a kidnapped baby. Nobody knows what or how it happened but it did.
P.S.: I kinda wish they never shoed this scene in them trailers, but the title somewhat gives away what is going on so not a big deal I guess.

Rob, as always, terrific video. I couldn’t agree further about what you said in regards to Paul Schrader or any other professional in the system that speaks out on anything (I personally still can’t believe the vitriol that Scorsese got over his comments about Marvel movies). Haven’t seen Longlegs yet, but certainly plan to this coming weekend (originally I was thinking about Twisters, but have been a little lukewarm with that and after hearing yours and Film Threat’s review of Longlegs, it’s sold me on that). I absolutely love horror films my own self and also think they’re the most involving form of cinema out there. Certainly looking forward to most of what you brought up, though you didn’t mention Eggers’ re-make of Nosferatu (and hoping that might spur a Blu-Ray release of Shadow of the Vampire). And speaking of Facebook… how about accepting my Friend request out there 😊 (oh, I certainly get why you wouldn’t so it’s not a big deal, but what the hell, it’s worth a shot). Thanks as always, and looking forward to your next video.

Paul Schrader tends to be very toxic with his comments. And by the way, both Tii West and Perkins have explored very different subgenres like psychological.thriller, creature feature, slasher, ghost story, found footage, etc. In a way, I feel that Schrader's idiosyncrasy is narrower and more limiting than the work of the directors he criticizes.

A decade is a relativistic thing - it can refer to ANY 10 year span. For example, I could refer to the decade of 1975-1984. More importantly, the common vernacular way to refer to decades is to name them as follows: "the 80's," "the 90's," etc. 1980 is most certainly in the 80's, and not the "end of the decade of the 70's." To say that "the 70's" refers to the years 1971-1980 is just going to confuse 99.99% of people.
Nobody talks about "the 7th decade of the 20th century." If they did, you would be correct (as you are about 2001 being the first year of the 21st century).

Sadly, I usually don't like elevated horror. I think these type of movies are good at creating a disturbing feel, but that's pretty much it. I think these movies are just pretentious crap that get away with too much nonsense. Directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are great at tension and suspense, but that's also where it ends, just like the entire subgenre. I wish I liked these movies , but it is what is. We can't like everything. But I'm happy for you guys who do enjoy, or even love, them.

To me the fact that horror dominates low budget/independent cinema, is because of the simple fact that for example, if I make a movie about racial tensions that is a tense drama, selling this would not be easy and not very box office friendly, but if I make a zombie movie, using metaphors to bring up the same heavy subjects, than this is a much easier sell and the writer can hide the tense drama behind the horror, with the financiers being none the wiser. Hence why we get horror films from great cinéaste like George A. Romero, David Cronenberg and Ishiro Honda amongst many.
BTW cineast is pronounced cin-hey-ast, as it comes from the French word cinéaste and the e acute in French is pronounced hey.

I understand what Schrader is saying, but the examples that Schrader gives, Ti West and Oz Perkins seem to be mainly interested in making horror (or horror adjacent fims). I don't get the impression from them that they're stuck in any "horror ghetto" because they don't have any other options. It seems to be where their interests lie. He may have picked the wrong examples. He didn't consider those filmmakers' personal tastes imo.

I'm getting the impression that this is like an extremely well shot, but badly written, episode of Chris Carter's Millennium TV series from the 90's - and as much as I liked that show, it wasn't particularly coherent most of the time either.

@@generaIsod I've since seen the film and my original impression was vindicated. A shitty Millennium episode is all this film is. Well shot certainly, but a first draft script.
I'm actually re-watching Millennium now, skipping the second season though. Not because I don't like it, but I'm primarily interested in going through just the episodes that Carter himself had a writing credit on; and that's just the S01 and S03 episodes. I still think the show never got better than that original Pilot episode.
Was one of your minor gripes with Longlegs that this supposed psychic couldn't figure out that her mother was in cahoots with this killer for over 20 years, and the guy was living in her basement the whole time?

And the fact she wasn't more freaked out during the home invasion and just calmly sat and opened the envelope.

    • @gordoncutter9241
      @gordoncutter9241 2 місяці тому

@@generaIsod I think how much you like this movie is directly proportional to how much you're willing to go with the "not fully or reliably psychic" part. It's very loose - as loose as the script demands it to be, scene to scene.
For myself, I need some hard rules. Some boundaries. I guess you can call it verisimilitude, as Rob is fond of saying.
It's interesting that in Millennium, Frank Black is not originally portrayed as a psychic. They kind of clouded this in the second season, but his original ability was meant to show what can happen when someone like Black - through his own combined experience and innate talent - can get himself into the head space of a suspect; basically his extreme empathy allows him to immerse himself into a state where he thinks and identifies as the killer. He can then "see" what the killer sees. But it was never meant to be supernatural, at least as Carter originally conceived it.

Something that I think is always important to remember about online discourse is that there's a good non-zero chance that the annaymous yahoo I'm arguing with online or who might be talking trash unprovoked could very well just be a stupid 13 year old kid. With that said, i think people have gotten way too comfortable freely spouting off and jumping to the least charitable interpretation possible of what someone says. Part of it probably has to do with the degredation of our social climate and polarization of our culture as our sense of common values, culture, and identity erodes. Part of it probably has to do with the way that social media is driven by engagement and virility which incentivizes saying the most out of pocket things possible (while also self censoring in other resoects to work around the censorship algorithms). Even still, another part of it is probably the psychological phenomenon that became more and more common as more people used the internet called "deindividuation," through which, as I understand it, people lose all sense of self awareness and indulividual autonomy and personal responsibility in crowds. Online, people have a tendency of losing self awareness of the impact of their own actions in their interactions with other people whom they can easily abstract as though they're talking to nothing more than a video game NPC. People act like they can say and do whatever they want anonymously with no impact on themselves or the other people they forget might actually be a real human being they're going after. Similarly, when people are anonymous and under the sway of deindividuation, they're likely much more prone to tribal thinking/herd mentality. Crowds in real life also cause deindividuation, and the reason why people are prone to act out of pocket in a large growd is for very similar reasons why they do online. Crowds can be easily swayed into unhinged tribalistic thinking where people can lose all sense of personal responsibility for their actions. This, perhaps, could be one reason why everyone is so quick to jump to the least charitable interpretation of what someone says possible. People get too married to their own desires, interests, and preferences, so even the slightest comment that sounds remotely critical of anything, even an abstract idea or thing that someone deeply identify with, is often interpreted as a personal attack against some facet of their identity, even if there was no personal criticism being made. So when you see people attacking others for seemingly innocuous comments or those made about abstract ideas, it's often someone (often wrongly and subconsciously) thinking that they're defending themselves and their tribe with which they identify. Other than UA-cam (which I'm not sure is the same thing), I don't go on social media much anymore, but for times when I do, I've long come to a personal policy not to say anything to anyone that I wouldn't say to them in person. If I wouldn't say simething out of pocket to sokeone's face, it probably isn't wise to say at all. If saying something could get me punched in the face in person, it's better to pause, use some common sense/decency, and either change my tone or shut up entirely.
I'm really tempted to see Longlegs, but it seems like a special kind of effed up that I might wait or try to see it with friends, lol. The last decade of horror is what got me into horror. I'm still a bit picky, but I love most of the classics of the genre now. It took me until college to dive in, which was right around the time "elevated horror" went into full swing. A lot of horror films over the last decade or so aren't just really good horror films, but great films in general. Get Out, It/It Chapter 2 (though 2 isn't as good as 1), Scream 4, The Witch, The Lighthouse (idk that qualifies as horror or suspense, but cosmic horror seems appropriate), Train to Busan (action horror, but still horror), It Follows, Us, The Babadook, Halloween (2018), A Quiet Place, The Invitation Gerald's Game, The Endless, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Cabin in the Woods, Under the Skin, Prometheus (stupid characters bug me, and it's kinda stupid, but I love the scifi), Midsommar, and Doctor Sleep are all very entertaining horror movies that I've enjoyed from the 2010s, and many of them are among my favorite movies of the respective years of their release. I really liked the article. It's well articulated, and I very much agree.

If you’re going to make elevated horror don’t fill it with characters that fit in a regular horror movie.

I don't think that it is a horror, and the ending of it doesn't really make sense considering the characters in involved

The modern fans along with the Harry Knowles wannabe modern film joirnalists, modern film critics, novice genre filmmakers, self entitled producers such as kathleen Kennedy, super overhyped filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino,Rob Zombie,Eli Roth,Mike Flanagan, and Ari Aster, super overrated film stiduos such as LIonsgate,Miramax, and A24,film sites such as Blogspot and Letterboxd, and editors such as Fangoria's Phil Nobile Jr. have pretty much helped ruins films, film culture, and film fandom as both nerd ego and geek ego have practically taken over and soured everything that is genre celluloid related as they have dumb downed the fans and treat them as though they're dumb-dumbs while drving away the intelligent fans of the past,as we'll see if LONGLEGS paves open the gates to much better quality genre films.

I'm not into horror. If I want to see something horrible, I visit a website about Taxes.

As a first time viewer of this channel, might I offer a slight bit of criticism, I almost did not make it to the meat of your content because it takes almost 10 minutes for you to arrive at the point promised in the headline. There is so much unecessary preamble.

I really don't see what people see in Get Out. It's a completely stupid and extremely racist movie (bl supr-ist, not wh- supr-ist) with idiotic characters and absurdly lame story.

For me, horror is not horror without the supernatural element. So I don't see slasher movies as horror, except Halloween, as Michael Myers is clearly supernatural to me, or if not, the movie has totally that weird element that I find essential to horror. So The VVitch and The Lighthouse for me are clearly horror movies. I think the difference between elevated and low-level?!? horror is not the artsy element, but the fact they're really scary and horrific, instead of comical, like The Conjuring or The Nun (Oh my god, it iz Da Nuhn!).

I think you'd have to class Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre as horror and certainly one of the greatest films of the genre. But you're right, the definition is blurry. I've even seen Taxi Driver referred to as 'horror'. Yet to see Longlegs so can't comment.

Long legs….Don’t care about the performances or that it wasn’t that scary. This movie is a terrible film and a complete waste of time and money. The writing and dialogue and the the 3rd act was abysmal. This is amateur stuff. The bar is so low in horror movies is the only way k could see people really liking this movie.
