    Thanks a lot I really appreciate the video. My brother gave me a Sedona van with this engine and I hear something right on in there and I'm pretty sure that it's from the time and chain. Thanks again Great video

    Thank you, thank you! I'm too old to do mechanic work anymore but love to watch good videos from people who really know what they're doing. Great video. I was thinking about buying a Sedona with only 128,000 miles but after watching this, changed my mind. You're a great mechanic, Matt. Thanks again (I subscribed and liked this video; will check out some of your others).

    crees que no esté en tiempo o se haya salido de sincronizacion?
    Que posibles fallas puede ser?

    Question I hope you can answer: does the timing Chain cover itself have a gasket? Need to do a similar job, found all the others gaskets - but the only timing cover gasket that comes up look like a 3 piece kit, none of which goes around the entire cover.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the video (liked and subscribed). Looks like we are facing this job on my son's 2008 Kia Amanti, 150K miles. Loud noises on start up that goes away after a few seconds. Will probably replace the water pump and oil pump along with the chains and guides, etc. at the same time. Do the cam phasers or any other parts need to be replaced while I'm in there ?

    Great vid. Thank YOU. You're like the only guy with in depth knowledge on the 3.8L. I'm getting a p0018 code and my mechanic says that i need to do a timing service. Should i get more than 3 opinions on this or just have the service done?

      A second opinion never hurts......however with P0018 it is highly likely your mechanic is correct.

    Hi Matt, Thank you so much for uploading this video. I have KIA Sedona LX 2006 model and from few months I having this ticking noise at the startup, so you heard this sound every time you start the engine.
    KIA service center finding is that my engine needs new intake & camshaft change but they are not interested in doing this Repairing. Do you think they’re right and do you have any videos of replacement intake & camshaft?

    Great video since there are few if any timing chain replacement videos on the 3.8l engine showing actual work being done. Question: whom did you buy the timing chain kit from or did you piece the parts together from KIA?

  • @OffGridInvestor
    @OffGridInvestor 4 роки тому

    I saw one here in Australia at 75 thousand miles going for PEANUTS. About US$750. Tempted to buy but honestly don't need a 3rd car as a single guy. Needed another timing chain. Also misfire codes but that may have also been because of the timing chain.

    Thank you for the video the footage gives you a great picture of what everything should look like once it's opened up . I am doing the same repair water pump and dual overhead cam timing chain and components replacement on a 3.3 Hyundai sonata which is pretty much the same motor . I have a timing chain question maybe you can answer for me ? I have attached all the components chains and pulleys pretty much but the timing cover . now I am doing my crankshaft revolutions clockwise to check the work to make sure everything's up in line and everything else and for some reason the timing keeps coming up on point but for some reason the colored links keep jumping off the timing marks on all of my gears , any helpful tips or ideas on what might be going wrong .

    • @MattShaughnessy6
      @MattShaughnessy6  3 роки тому

      So you in installed chain per colored marks but when you turn it over by hand the colored marks do not line back up? Is this what you are saying?

    • @johnmerrill2294
      @johnmerrill2294 3 роки тому

      @@MattShaughnessy6 That's what I'm experiencing yes . I recently paid for mechanic help and the mechanic mentioned that it's going to take a whole lot of revolutions for those chains to actually match up again according to color .

    • @MattShaughnessy6
      @MattShaughnessy6  3 роки тому +1

      yes he is correct. the main reason for turning over by hand is to ensure you installed the chain correctly and that there are no hang ups or valve to piston contact. there is a complicated math formula you can apply that will tell you how many revolutions you need to turn the engine over to get the colored links to line up but I can almost guarantee you that you will have to turn the engine over at least 90-150 revolutions before that happens again.

    So a Kia Sedona has a Timing CHAIN? Does Timing "CHAIN" refer to a metal Chain, whereas "Timing BELT" refers to a plastic belt? In the video it looks like the "belt" is metal. Is that correct? Was it just the guides that were plastic, and the belt (chain) is metal?

    Hey Matt
    I in ne of those as well and ive found out they have tensioner problems and also a tsb against using aftermarket oil filters .Have you heard this ? The engine im working with has about 113 on the odometer the dtc in memory is a p0016 the chain on the no.1 cyl bank will rattle after a cold start for a few seconds.This is my first experiance with the Kia 3.8 liter.what ive learned there is some issue with aftermarket oil filters and the tensioners on these engines this engine seems to stil have the guides intact my marks are still lined up no sign of damage yet so im thinking i might get by with doing the tensioners and putting on a factory oil filter. The owners dont want to put in the 5 or 600 in parts for it. What are your thoughts on this and id like to hear any advice you could give. Thanks mopar matt

      Have you seen what you have to do on the Ford Explorer Cologne V6 engines with one of the chains in the back (not just in the front)? What a disaster. This is nothing compared to that. And although I think this engine is slightly based on the licensed Mitsubishi engine from the 1st Gen Sedona, these are pretty solid engines. (1st Gen was a timing belt). You should see the numerous Explorer v6 engine timing chain disasters on YT. You have to take out the engine to do the job 8-0.
