- Attorney Jonathan Rapping knows, “it’s really hard to be a caring lawyer. Caring is painful.” His organization, Gideon’s Promise, is inspiring a new generation of public defenders facing “the nation’s greatest civil rights issue today” - the tragic shortage of representation for those who can’t afford a lawyer.
Jonathan Rapping is strengthening public defenders and transforming public defense across the nation.
The 1963 Supreme Court ruling, Gideon V. Wainwright, mandated that poor people accused of crimes must be provided counsel if we are to live up to our nation's promise of equal justice. Today, however, our nation's jails and prisons are disproportionately populated with members of our most vulnerable communities due to structural, financial, and cultural challenges that have kept us from fulfilling this promise. Through Gideon’s Promise, Jon is building a new generation of public defenders to address these challenges and help shift the nation towards true equality in our justice system.

Everyone deserves a Lawyer for representation if can't afford a Lawyer,its suppose to be justice for all.Regardless of the ethics background, and majority of clients can't afford a Lawyer.
This is beyond true. I often lose site of why I went to law school. Always looking for ways to answer the question, how can I make the difference that I wanted to make in the system? The reason why I believed law school would help me attain such goal.

TBH I feel if the public defender field was more attractive financially more of the talented/skilled/ higher potential law students would go into that. Or if law school was cheaper. I am sort of considering public defense rather then trial though my uncle is a pastor and our church is located in a poor area, I have experience preaching and reaching people there and seeing what people have to live through.... I have a passion to help souls IK I could do that with trial law but I could really reach the poor with PD. THe question though is financially would Public defense support me enough.
I do agree with the notion though that people should at least care and do what they can even if they aren't public defenders per say.
Its the impact you will have that will be more important. What have you decided?

What blows me away listening to this now isn't the 2.5 hours per lawyer but the 1 investigator for 4000 cases, that guy must have the most miserable life of any human on the planet.

I apologize to Jonathan Rapping, because it is not his fault. But this video gets a dislike for censorship of other videos. It's the best way I can express my dissatisfaction.
Pharmacists and real doctors have to be through a program lasting up to 10 years maybe. Some of that training program is given away for free like some kind of guild maybe. You have to support yourself during that time maybe. At the end of that training program you might get a degree maybe. Is law school like that?
I live in maine and we have no public defenders to help the people who can't afford to pay for legal services

So now we agree on the problem, how do we fix it?
So, the public has no defense against criminals anymore if the criminals can hire better lawyers that can actually change the law they get out of jail free card right?
