"Social expectations of Law Enforcement are unrealistic and as a result of cause and effect over the years in this particular aspect of the job its understaffed and overworked." That is the general point of this one talk that is a little over 17 minutes long. Now its just ONE problem amongst many, and even then there is no magical solution to this problem. Sure there are some general concepts on how to solve it that seem pretty logical but they end up adding more needs to be addressed, and so on and so on the rabbit hole goes. A lot of these police talks tend to address one problem or another regarding police in modern times and the current state of the job itself in regards to social stigma, perception and corruption. The one thing I find that all these talks have in common, however, is the staggering amount of comments that berate, dismiss, or attempt to invalidate the speaker because they didn't spend 5 days talking about every single problem in Law Enforcement, but this is a TED talk, not a summit or a seminar. Curb expectations and understand the current moment you are living in. This is in no way me defending police or condemning them. Honestly, there is enough of that BS in the comments section to fill a book. My point here is the concept is simple to understand, and I should be surprised about the general toxicity of the comments sections but sadly I'm not. In truth I'm simply responding for my own catharsis.
Good post! Ironically I’m in the application process. Well, maybe it isn’t so ironic…since I’m watching these TED talks to glean and learn from guys like this.
Been on the job 20 yrs. 100% correct. At some point in time, America decided that the police need to be therapist and social workers. They are neither, the job is supposed to be about enforcing city laws, laws created by city council, legislative bodies etc.. No, somewhere along the line, police are supposed to do everything, including being nice to criminals, managing them, helping them, arresting them, considering their lives and problems and never kill themselves, even when they try to kill us. It's a joke and that's why crime has gone crazy and people are leaving in droves and no one is coming on the job.
Think it's a lot different reasons why things have deteriorated to this point. A) understaffing b) under training c)public mistrust d ) policing tends to attract 'macho' personalities. The type who care more about respect then de-escalation (not all obviously, but a bigger percentage then, say, teachers). E) increasingly hostile environment
Car crashing is the second thing that kills cops. Guns are first and heart attack is third. This is on the job. Why are they allowed to work so long. Understaffing or over policing. Cop left the cop shop drove 1.5 blocks drove through a stop sign and crashed into my girlfriend's car totaling the cop car and doing $1000s I'm damage to her car and severilly injuring her. How does that happen?
How about looking the other way, while a victim is being abused. The victim ends up dead. How about telling someone, "Maybe, he's the victim. Did you like it??" If you need to shoot, shoot to wound not kill. Telling a victim, you have several detectives, when you don't." Many people died on the roads needlessly!!
My ex abused me over qualified immunity keeps them from accountability. I’m very sad ti see this was 8 years ago and nothing has changed but more fatalities
This is very pro police and he doesn't acknowledged abusive and violent police officers! He does make some good points but it is more making excuses instead of also admitting there are idiots that should not be police officers! This guy also doesn't cover the fact that bad officers are protected and that good officers are sometimes run out by the bad ones!
@@shapshooter8669 saying this, rather true or not, does not bring awareness to the corruption in policing... If what you say is true then cops won't be shooting themselves on the foot as much as they do. So lets bring light to it, because it can't be what its not, but it could be what is not looked at.
If you enjoyed this check out a talk show on MyTcnTv UA-cam channel called hope in the 6ix. A discussion about issues within the criminal justice system with Lawyers, Counsellors, Ex Offenders, Police, Victims and their family members impacted by crime etc... About what they are doing to make a difference in their communities. A must watch. I myself was a ex cop who now am making a difference by helping offender make a change in their lives
I'm not sure what the message is in this talk. Is it BUDGET, TRUST, SAFETY & WELLNESS, and or FATIGUE. The police are not an entity of its own - it is an integral part of community. Everyone in the community lives are impacted by BUDGETS, TRUST, SAFETY & WELLNESS, including FATIGUE. The police should not expect anything more than anyone else within the community for doing what is expected of them and getting desired results that helps out the community.
Yeah, most of these TED talks that are about police tend to be overly toxic in the comments section. Its almost comical how the subject matter is outright dismissed in a fashion of, "yeah but ." Its like people can't listen for two seconds without bringing personal bias into it. Yes there are a lot of problems but these talks address them in a controlled manner to bring attention to each appropriately(in theory) so... yeah. Haters gun hate, I suppose.
Chicken Sandwich eat that chicken and keep killing animals... you’re worse than these haters you call toxic.... it’s you folks that seem entitled to comment which looks actually worse than people who want JUSTICE.
While I'm sure that some of what the speaker is talking about applies in certain policing agencies around the country, for the most part I think it is totally inapplicable. There are areas in the country that have massive crime problems and limited policing and comparison to the crime problem. For the most part that's a political problem though. You have very liberal operation of the Cities where this is a problem and it causes Chaos discontentment and revenue issues for the city in question. From my perspective, if I see multiple police in a sting operation for prostitution or on a massive Crackdown on speeding Etc I see it as too much policing trying to raise revenue. When I see police that will only take a report to do no follow-up on a burglary but then the same Police Department puts 10 cops on a sting operation to catch people in a consensual transaction between two adults. I say their priorities are screwed up and that's the problem not overworked cops. In my area the biggest complaint about cops is we as the taxpayers fund way too many of them. The Sheriff's Department in this County Fields 10 times more officers then where I lived previously. Is it because there's a crime problem? Absolutely not. Where I live it's very common for people not to lock their doors, and very common for people to leave their car running at the convenience store or other places where they're only going to be stopping for a few minutes. Often in the colder months you'll see Vehicles idling for hours as people sit in a restaurant. Again, the point is it's political not really necessarily about crime not really necessarily about police officers. Another point, from my experience and interactions with police , any overtime hours that they work is because they sought out that overtime for additional income. I am not familiar with any police that I've ever been required to work overtime except in rare circumstances. So, sorry no sympathy here for police. It's a job they sought and in most cases get paid well for it.
zzzzz, got to this ted talk, looking for video on the cop saying that they need Military weapons to fight constitutionalists. but this is one boring speaker.
All police departments should be disbanded and the taxes that fund them returned to the citizens who can police themselves far more effectively, not to mention without abusing people.
Tig Dawson if we are random strangers that get in an arguement somewhere secluded like a hunting property or rural road and i kill you, do you think the community wiill be able to serve justice for your death? Or would it be more likely a lynch mob would hang the nearest person or someone that the community knows you have problems with( granted the community cares enough to risk their lives and kill someone to bring you "justice")

The issue is the failed drug war, that's the true issue.
*false *false drug war

I think what I can agree with and what you may be saying is we should focus on what creates Quality over Quantity.

A cop being pro-police? NO WAY
Also, you got it backwards, good cops are the majority and push out the bad ones.
Yea god forbid someone is pro police because all of the media and society are completely anti police now.

What a great presentation. Thin Blue Line. This comment section is cancer tho.
It has been 4 years since this posting. What has changed?
10:15-10:20 something I learned
The biggest problem in American policing is the American Media machine.

Arm the citizens. Give the police a rest. They are not accountable.
Good job.
