BIG Virginia Mountain Buck Called In! Muzzleloader Deer Hunting From A Saddle! Self-Filmed

- Climbed back into one of my favorite spots to do an all day sit with near record high temperatures. Snuck in at gray light and got to my tree without bumping any deer. Shortly after getting settled a small forky buck came by eating acorns. About 30-45 minutes later the same forky came running back from where I last saw him, I caught a glimpse of antler in the thicket below him and knew a good buck was close behind. I heard the buck snort wheeze so I began to call aggressively back to him. The small buck decided he wanted to come investigate the sound and came into 15yds from my tree. This was exactly what I needed and the bigger buck followed behind. After a few moments to ensure a good shot I was able to drop the buck and watch him slide down the ridge. I ended up doing a gutless method and packing the buck off the mountain, was a great time without trekking poles. Hope you all enjoyed this one, was a really cool hunt to experience. Turns out I also had some velvet footage of this deer from the past summer, very interesting to see how far he moved after he settled into his fall range. Subscribe to the channel I hope to bring a few more deer hunts this season and maybe even get a crack at a bear.

That was awesome! My hat is off to you: going up on that ridge, butchering in the field, and packing it out is the work of a true stud!
Appreciate it, thanks for watching
Awesome Va mtn stud congrats! Gotta love hunting the mature Va nat forest bucks
Great buck! What an awesome hunt
Thanks for joining, was pretty cool to call him in like that
Greetings from Augusta County Va. Great buck, muzzleloading season is prime time for us here in Augusta County. Killed 2 nice bucks during earl muzzleloader myself. Happy Hunting!
Awesome video man! Fun to watch
Glad you enjoyed, was pretty insane to get him in that close. A lot of fun adding the camera into the mix of things. Just makes it that much more tricky to get it done.
Are you hunting Public land or national forest, land or private?
Watching you getting up with that full pack, reminded me of me packing out moose meat when I lived in Alaska. Great video.
Thanks, man that is a dream trip. Would love to suffer a moose pack out 🤣
Man you stone cold dropped him lol. Heck of a shot
@@hackmanoutdoors1626 right through the entry shoulder and exited just behind the other. Couldn't be any better
Great video. Just subscribed.
@@dennispritchardoutdoors7882 appreciate the support!
My pleasure. Love to see younger folks out hunting. We are both Virginians , both hunters , but I am old school . I love muzzleloader hunting but I use traditional rifles, and most often flintlocks. Not that many of us left.
Keep up the good work my young friend.
If you get the time check out my channel. See what an 81 year old is up to these days!!
Stay safe,and see you
on the mountain.
Dennis
PS
Give a flintlock a try sometime. It might open up a whole new world to you.
That’s where I find the old mountain deer. Nice deer man.
@@leroysmith8226 have to go where others don't
Young man you found my spot. Not really but pretty darn close. Your out there earning it hunting hard. It's all work after they hit the ground. My last Virginia mtn buck had a Unicorn point about 5in on his forehead. Quarter and pack out, Now that's hunting!! Congratulations!!
Thanks, always more enjoyable to figure them out in the mountains. Thanks for watching
That's about as pretty a spot as I've seen. Well done. Thanks for taking us along
@johnnyriley455 thanks for joining in
Good buck, I've hunted in eastern Montgomery co. all my life on private land and it looks just like your area, congratulations, I haven't hit it hard yet but it will be happening soon.
Bucks are out and about for sure, looking like a great rifle opener
Outstanding video...the content, footage and audio. Well done on the deer and and self-filming.
@johnrandolph1034 much appreciated. Thanks for joining in
That's a really nice buck my friend man that is a steep pack out anyway congratulations no pain no gain
Thanks, the knees got the use in that's for sure
Excellent videoing and I really appreciated the interviews with the camera and especially the explanation of what went into you deciding where to hunt after you got the buck, new subscriber for sure! Awesome va mountain buck!
@jimboslice238 thanks glad you got some info out of it, appreciate the sub and comment
Just moved to SW VA...will be out scouting around....I've been up in the national forest near Norton... no problem seeing deer just driving around....from northern VT so...I'm used to hunting hard for an opportunity on public land. Thanks for the video. I'm going to have to use a jet sled to get one out...getting close to 70 but still got the burning desire to hunt!!
@@allanmachia1650 lots and lots of ground in that area. I wish you the best of luck and many seasons to come.
Congratulations. Reminds me of western Franklin Co Va.
@johnparker9139 fairly similar country for sure
Great job. Money spot!
Premium spot this year
Love your videos. I hit that sub button. Me and my buddy are gonna hunt Virginia this year. Beautiful up there!
@@scottcozart8950 awesome thanks for the support. Lots of public here, just be ready to put the miles in the find where you need to be. Good luck
Thanks for sharing this video with us we really enjoyed it and as always I'm really looking forward to seeing the next video
Glad you enjoyed it
Most excellent hunt that morning very glad for you you worked for that deer living in western Maine we got hills like that so you earn every deer
Thanks appreciate it
Love it! Great video, I couldn’t stop laughing when you were trying to stand up😂
I had a thought I wasn't going to get off my stomach there for a second 🤣. Gotta love a heavy pack squishing you into the ground
Deer are almost ALWAYS moving and you only kill them in the woods. It's not hard to come up with an excuse to do something else but we all just get so many days to hunt. I'm using them all! Congrats on a great buck. I'm an all SWVA National Forest hunter myself. Maybe we'll run into each other out there sometime!
They are moving somewhere, you just have to find the pockets of focused activity. I prefer the hardwoods, just more engaging than sitting a field, I'm pretty limited on spots with wide open fields anyway so that's how I have focused my efforts.
@@lawsonhuntsSWVA I lost a piece of private I hunted for years about 3 seasons back and decided to pound the public land and figure out how to hunt it so I never get in that situation again. I love a sure thing but the hills sure are fun to figure out. Kind of put the fun back into deer hunting for me. I still gotta find a spot for some late season doe patrols to load the freezer to capacity!
@gvsoutdoors2673 that is the one thing NF doesn't have, does. Or doe days being limited, I live off of game meat so I have to shoot at least 6 to make it through the year. A couple private spots definitely helps the freezer fill a bit easier lol
Just watched your second harvest, Great buck congratulations once again. You did better than I did last season in the mountains of Virginia. Drought had my spot dried up with zero water. Good luck this upcoming season.
Starting to see some drought set in in VA now. Fingers crossed its not as bad as last year. Good luck
My property is like where your hunting. Everything you shoot rolls downhill creating a long recovery. Cool hunt !
Makes for some extra fun when you have to climb back up to get out
Cool too watch this,amazing hunt.
Was an awesome experience, glad you enjoyed
That's was a great video. Congrats.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it
I'm also a Lawson hunting in SWVA but you must be farther west than me cause the deer slide a while. Great deer!
They certainly don't stay where you shoot them in this terrain lol
Bro you smoked that big joker
@@eddroberts1681 didn't go 20
I de- bone the meat to save even more weight and sometimes just cut the antlers off. Great video!
@country_gbrony721 deboning definitely helps save a few pounds. I think mest quality is better if you can leave it on the bone through rigor so I choose to go that route. I enjoy the euro mounts too much to cap them, but I do skin off the hide and extra mest from it to save some there too. Thanks for watching
Congrats man on a really nice buck 👍👍. I like this style of hunting. Being in the mountains & mobile
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, the timber is my favorite for sure
Nice shot!
Thanks 🍻
Lol you smoke him man. He just started rolling. It sure is pretty out there, i just can't wait to get back in the woods. Good video man, subbed.
@SouthernDrawTN appreciate the support, it's hard for me to imagine being anywhere else in the fall. The hardwoods are home!
@@lawsonhuntsSWVA Man you aint lying brother, I'm so rdy I can't stand it. Take care.
Another great vid! Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
amazing video great buck great job once again!
Thanks for watching
Another awesome hunt. Great buck!!
Thanks was an epic hunt to experience
Nice buck and hunt footage!
@joehughes6337 thanks, was excited about how the footage came out. A lot going on in the tree while he came in
Congrats
@JAYBO_30_October much appreciated thanks for watching
Congratulations! Great video. What pack are you running? Cheers
@konkozoolin3655 that was a mystery rqnch pintler. Have really liked it and the Metcalf.
Great hunt, great buck! Wondering if you take the tenderloins out?
@croteaud yes I do, you can slip them out from just under the back bone. I get the backstraps off then the last thing is taking them out
Have a seat buck! No tracking on that one
@@2NATUR don't go far when you take out the shoulder with all the vitals.
Great hunt and video. Where is the blaze orange?
VA regs only require when not on stand during ML seasons, camera doesn't capture it all. Thanks for the comment and giving it a watch.
Great job man. What pack is that?
@jupdyke17 mystery ranch pintler, it's solid
Nice buck! I pack all of my deer out too and seeing how much better it is after hauling a couple elk out in MT over the years.
Did you get the tenderloin out? If not, its easy even without gutting them.
@dannyjacobs2280 I did yes, I typically do that last and go in right where the ribs end where thatblittle opening is under the backstrap and fish them out. I normally release the organs a tad so there isn't a risk of popping anything. It's not easy but worth the extra time. Dragging is horrible, not trying to do that again of I don't have to 🤣
Easy peazy- pack trying an elk up the ill😅
Just a couple extra trips 😅
Nice buck man. Where at in Virginia?
Southwest portion of the state
I'm from dickenson county! Nice bucks around here to
@@lawsonhuntsSWVA nice I’m in the northwest
@@missyblackburn2067 i think the only thing steeper than Dickenson County ridges is sky diving.
If you don’t mind me asking, what county you in? I live in Craig county va
Going to keep spots to myself in the video, but I'm not too far from Craig. I have a few spots I like there in National Forest
I'm new to hunting the mountains. I've guess I've been blessed to always have private land to hunt but as things go it can't last
forever. I've been watching alot on mtn hunting. Doyou have any pointers to give. are you hunting steep thick terrain?
Steep+Thick+Food normally means deer/bear. Have to scout and learn as you go. Enjoy the process and play the wind/thermals
Which county are you in I do alot in roanoke and Botetourt Co.
I run around all over VA, not going to pin any specific counties. But focus is west of 81 but it varies year to year depending on scouting etc.
@lawsonhuntsSWVA I got ya I wasn't asking for you to drop me a pin or somthing just a fellow hunter here in va thought your videos was cool
@josephr2216 I gotcha just don't want any attention to even a county I am in. Not trying to blow public land spots for anyone. Good luck out there and thanks for the comment
