I made this dress from a cream colored cotton bed sheet and I received many compliments when I wore it to an event yesterday. Thanks so much! One stylish young lady likes it so much that she wants me to teach her how to make one for herself, with an upcycled sheet, like mine.
Love how the embroidery of the fabric looks when stirred!
It turned out even better than I was hoping 😍
Just found out a few weeks ago that my wife (who has miles more sewing experience than I) has never actually sewn a garment before.
This is exactly her thing right now and you explain things so well, I think it might be a good first for her.
Thanks for sharing!
I am so happy to have found this - I’ve made the dress and I’m delighted with it …. I will be making more of your designs the simplicity is a joy ….
I love how the shirring looks on that fabric! The little embroidered flowers bunch up so perfectly. Also love how you set the sleeves in. I haven’t given shirring a go yet- but I’m totally going to give it a try soon.
It’s a little time consuming, but way easier then you’d expect!
Such a cute dress! I used this technique back in the 70s when I was in high school to make some summer tops.
Must make immediately! So gorgeous. Thank you!!
The dress is beautiful! The fabric you chose with the shirring is lovely. I will definitely be making this dress. Thanks so much for this video. You explained it so perfectly! 👗🧵🪡🥰
Thanks Sharon x
This dress turned out beautiful!😊
This dress is very beautiful. Good job Janelle!
Can you do a vlog of fabric and notions shopping in Japan. Thank you
100%! So excited to share the fabric shopping here 😍
Adorable perfect summer dress. Beautiful scenery and background.
You look stunning! Lovely dress!
Love this! I’ve been excited to see what you would make with this fabric and it looks great! Also, they way you attached the sleeves was clever. When I make these types of dresses I can never figure out how to attach the sleeves so they always end up unfinished lol!
Perfect timing! I just bought fabric for a shirred dress for my mom and was trying to figure out how I was going to make the sleeves stay up. Thank you for showing me!
your channel is so consistent, visually pleasing and calming. you always deliver. thank you for that!
Talented! Your ways are delightful.
Definitely have to give this a go. Love it thank u 😊
Absolutely beautiful dress! ❤ The shirring was perfect for that fabric!
I love the shirring with this pattern. It looks fabulous.
I like the blossoms, too.😍
I finally finished my dress and it looks so good! Thank you for this tutorial. ❤
A great tutorial. I made my favourite ever dress following this tutorial. I did find 1.5 x my body and sleeves was a better fit though.
Beautiful dress. Thank you for sharing.
Great project! I also love the background of Cherry blossoms--looks like you are enjoying Japan!
The dress is simply lovely! I’m going to try sewing one for myself tomorrow! The blossoms and scenery is stunning!!!🌷❤️🇨🇦
Wonderful! My sister loves this style so I shall make her one, I like the more secured shoulders too! ❤
This is the exact tutorial I have been searching for! Can’t wait to give it a try
Hi Janelle! !
Wow your dress turned out beautiful.
Remain blessed xxx
Yes yes yes! This is what I have been searching for! I need those sleeves to stay up. I wonder if I can take apart my dress and redo the sleeves like this 🥰
Yay I’m glad you found it helpful! I think it should be pretty easy to fix your other dresses with this style. I’m thinking of doing the same!
Love, love, love! Definitely my next project.
That fabric was made for that dress it came together so perfectly xx
I just love your dress. The fabric is lovely. I hope you are enjoying Japan. 😊
this vid is so helpful I come back to it at least 2 times while sewing any sort of shirred stuff
Love this updated shirred dress! I've made two of your other rectangle dresses before and would be keen to see how this one compares!
Right now I'm focusing on crochet though as I have a new baby and sewing takes too much time 😅
Love the shifted dress, and especially love the length of them on the skirt!. It is so serene and beautiful to have the cherry blossoms from Japan in the background. Enjoy every moment of living there. Love you!
thank you for the tutorial; I made this dress and absolutely love it! feeling like a fairy.
Beautiful fabric, great tutorial. Thanks
Wow, that looks amazing!!!
Love it! I have been wanting to create a shirred dress but have felt uncertain. This seems just easy enough so I think I'll give it a go! Also, love seeing the final shots in Japan. 😍
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have made a top following it and although I was terrified cutting off the bodice triangle to set the sleeves.. it has worked a treat!
I loved!!!!❤❤❤
I love this ❤
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for... thank you so much. I have a dress that is shirred strapless that I am adding sleeves to, but I was not sure how to attach the sleeves so they don't bunch up underarm. Your instructions on cutting a triangle off the sleeves and bodice is what I needed. Now I can go ahead and finish this. Thanks again. Awesome!
Thanks for the tutorial. I grew up in Japan and knew exactly where you took the picture. Jealous! ❤
Super cute ❤
Ohhh I need to make this. Thank you!!!
I ❤this, what a great job you idd again.
And i'm watching this very late for me ( it's 02.17 in de morning here, actually bedtijd for me)😊
definitely a very pretty dress and fits so nicely on you. enjoy Japan
Just made a dress using this tutorial and it’s AMAZING! Im so happy with how it turned out! Thank you for making this video ❤️
Yay love to hear that!! I’m so glad you found my tutorial helpful 🧡
I’ve missed you! Beautiful you, beautiful 👗
So grateful for this video! I used a very similar video to attempt my first shirred dress. It was all going well until it came to attaching the sleeves. In the video I was watching the sleeves were just attached by a few stitches down the side seam. This really didn’t work for me and I was so disappointed as I had spent ages doing the shirring which turned out really well. I was pulling my hair out wondering how I could save the dress. I found this tutorial and attached the sleeves as shown. Absolutely brilliant method and so flattering, I have really sloped shoulders but with this method the sleeves stay up. Many, many thanks for this, I was about to give up on sewing as I was so fed up and you saved me 😊❤❤
I found a dress on amazon like this and I really want to make a dress like this!
Was anyone as terrified as I was when she cut the shirring! 😱😆 I just knew it would immediately unravel... 🤯
Uhm, 🤯
I am honestly unsure of why it didn't unravel. What does she mean thay won't unravel if it has been "seamed" and pressed. Was there a seaming step that was not recorded? Are we sure I can cut the dress like this as long as I have pressed?
@@jengerson I think she said steamed x
@@kellymccaffrey3939 Ah good. Wish me luck then. :)
Steamed, not seamed
I’ve made it today and it looked fabulous 👌
Thank you darling u made my day❤
That makes me so happy to hear! I’m glad you love it 🧡
Excellent Tutorial, Thank you for sharing. :)
Thank you
first❤! love your dresses!
Thank you so much 🧡
I’m attempting to locate the pocket template link. But I’m failing at that. So I’ve improvised and with the help of my handy French curve, it’s a go!
Loved your dress it is lovely and very dreamy❤enjoyed your video will check you out again you are very talented 😊
Thank you for this super clear tutorial ! I want to sew a shirred dress for a while and I have a beautiful coupon of floral cotton popelin that would be perfect for it.
Absolutely beautiful..you work so neatly..Jxx 💐💜🌺🇬🇧👑🌼🌻🥀
I love this dress so much, and have the perfect fabric in mind to make it with. do you think that it would look good with the bottom ruffled like the top and sleeves?
Beautiful stay safe.
Very nice dear 😊
Such a beautiful dress Janelle, and perfect for spring in Japan! Just out of interest, when you were shirring the bodice, did you run the stitching in between the rows of flowers or would it not matter if you stitched/shirred over the pattern? The flowers look perfect and not ‘bunched’ up at all when you’re wearing it :-) I also like the technique of using the angle cuts to make it fit perfectly snug♥
I have the perfect fabric I’ve been saving for a dress like this! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Such a cuty 🤩 love to sew one in broderie anglaise fabric. Got 😱when you cut those shirred triangles on the body piece though. I ‘d be scared it ´d go undone in a minute if i touched it. Is there a special way or something to handle the shirred fabric at that moment of the making ? Thank you Janelle
How about the size of the triangle for the sleeves when you have another size? I have great hopes I could possibly make this dress!
It’s really cute. ✨💖 I want to start shirring cause I like the look of it, but it intimidates me.😅
Definitely give it a try! It’s a little time consuming, but so easy once you’ve got your machine settings figure out x
Hi. Thank you so much for this video and the setting sleeves. It’s spot on. I would like to know the shirring elastic diameter. You have put the link to the Hem line elastic on Amazon but I can’t get it here where I live. If I know the diameter size then I could probably source it locally.
Looks great! Did you do backstitch when you start shirring? Do you do each row seperately or just move the needle and go all the way until the end?
Love this tutorial!!!! What surger do you have?? Trying to find one 😁
Where is the fabric from? Its gorgeous!!!
Love it !!!!! I can't wait to make one. Thank you
Sooo precious! Where can I purchase the fabric?
So cute! Where did you find this fabric?
I would like to try this, but make it as a top instead of a dress. 🙂 However, I'd want to raise the back neckline up much higher - do you think that would alter the sleeve "cap" shape?
Also - you're in Japan, look at the blossoms! 🌸 So envious! I was going to spend 2 weeks in Japan in May 2020 - had the tickets, the accomdations, everything! - but we all know what happened that year. 😢 Very sadly, the friend who was going to take me is no longer in my life, so I don't think I'll ever go.....
I hope you have a wonderful stay!😊
omg the little shirred flowers look fantastic!! ♥ Was it enough with just one spool of the elastic threat? Seems like a lot of shirring!
It is a fair bit, but one spool is enough for a project like this 😊
One question: When measuring shoulder sleeve circumference, you say to double this measurement. As an example (for clarification), if shoulder measurement equals 17", would the pattern be cut at 34" or cutting two pieces at 17". The length is 13.5" +2.5" for allowances.. As I listen to the narration, I think is it 34" x 16"...is this correct? Thank you. Love this dress!
I’ve never shirred before. How do you start and finish securely? I am assume you can’t backstitch a little as you can with normal thread?
Great video👍🌺☘🌻🍀🌷🍁🌳
Do you think it's possible to use double gauze for this or is it too delicate to shirr?
I love this video and everything you make! I followed all instructions to a “T” and ended up with a very, overly large dress after shirring, and am now trying to alter it before attaching the sleeves. I have basted 4” in on each side of the shirred portion of bodice, and it is still looser than i’d like 🤔 not sure why yours turned out so perfect and mine is drastically oversized haha!
I’m making this now and mine is tooo big too! I have no idea how to alter it!what did you do?
mine was the same way! I'm wondering if my elastic thread didn't shrink as much as hers.... my sleeves were huge and I ended up cutting 6inches off the width of mine.
Do u need to do any special way to wash the dress? Will the stirring machine wash?
Hello. Thank you so much for this video. I wanted to make a shirred dress and this perfect. However I do have a question; for the bodice part you say to measure around the bust tightly. Like you my hips are wider than my bust (in my case far, far wider) so I'm a bit confused how the body of the dress will fit my body given you've measured the bodice tightly. As your video shows, when there are lots of shirring rows the fabric contracts. How will the rest of the garment fit across the hips? I intend to cut this pattern this weekend but would like to understand how these measurements will work. Thank you again for a great dress pattern and a good instructional video.
Because you end up joining two rectangles that are your bust measurement together to create the dress, the finished hip area will be your bust measurement x 2. Is that wide enough for your hips? If you don’t measure the bust tightly the shirring won’t be snug enough around your bust and will slip down. My hips are also waaay bigger then my bust measurement 😊
@@RoseryApparel Thank you so much for taking time to respond to my question. I actually cut my fabric yesterday (before seeing this) as I had a light bulb 💡 moment when I figured it out. I definitely understand it now. Actually compared to other shirred dress videos yours is genius, with regards to the way the dress will sit on the body.
Finally, where did you get the fabric you use for this dress from? I absolutely love it.
Many thanks again 😊
I am attempting to see this dress and it is looking a lot larger than my size. I have already shirred 5 rows and it’s still huge. Will the dress fit my measurements after shirring is complete? Or any advice on how I can make the dress smaller?
For larger sized people, would you need to adjust the triangle cut out at the top? How did you determine the measurement of that? Great tutorial! I would love to make this dress. I am a bust of 50 in and I am 5’ 10” thank you and think the triangle may need to be adjusted?
I was thinking the same thing! I thought I might measure the length from the top of my bra cup down to the side seam under my arm to see if I think it needs to be a bit longer / deeper
@@havantgirl please let me know if this works and how you did this.
❤
How would you go about making a higher neckline? Like at my collar bone? Thank you for any help!
I don’t think you can without creating a totally different style, but I’ve shared this shirred dress project which covers the collarbone which you might be interested in: ua-cam.com/video/9YIcUIV9W_E/v-deo.html
I think, this is without me completing my dress yet, one could raise the body as a whole. My thinking (and this is what I am trying) is to perhaps shorten the length of the elastic that goes into the sleeve head. I will know tomorrow whether my idea works, which I hope it will as I would like it a little higher too. The pattern and construction is so simple but so effective. I can't wait to finish mine...
@@karennelson4108 I'm really curious to know if it worked for you to raise it by shortening the elastic?
I was wondering how can I make this but with a higher neckline? would I just make the bodice piece longer ?
If I were to make this for a kids' size, I assume a 4x6" triangle for the sleeve would be too large - is there an approximate ratio I can use to figure out what size I should cut?
How much fabric did you use? Thanks :)
I have a dumb question. When sewing the side seams, can't I just use the over locker? It seems like double the work when the serger does both at the same time.
I avoid these dresses because of the shoulder slippage so this is wonderful. I am actually going to make this one. ❤
Even though the overlocker has a construction stitch too, I like to sew with my sewing machine first as the stitch is more secure then just the overlocker stitch. Doing both will help your handmade clothing last a lot longer. Have fun making your dress x
At 2:55 In video when I double the underarm measurement…so I then cut the rectangle into two pieces since I doubled it? Sorry just learning how to sew.
You only need 1 rectangle per sleeve, and each rectangle will need to be double the underarm measurement to get the gathering and puffiness 😊
I've been looking into shirring and using elastic thread, and I saw someone comment on the fact you can't machine wash it when done this way. Have you had any experience with this? I'd love to make something like this dress (which is gorgeous by the way) but I'm worried it wouldn't last, or I would have to hand wash which I hate!! X
As @TheMelbourneHeart said! I’ve machine all of my shirred dresses and never had a problem 😊
You can machine wash shirring just fine in a garment bag on a cold, delicate cycle. It's machine drying that's the real problem because the heat breaks down the elastic. Just hang dry your shirred clothing for best results
@@RoseryApparel thank you for replying! Good to know for the future 😁
I just set my sleeve In my bust 40 8nches did sleeve elastic at 10 inches but it not sitting right all. Very tight and Up on the side,,,, should I not cut the top of bodice the 4x6 for slevve😊 help
For my size I did dress cut same as sleeve but the sleeve still too far out on the back 😢😢😢HELP
Hey..when u make a overlock..everytime u need to change a pressure foot..??? Plz reply..
No need to change the presser foot, the overlocker is a completely seperate machine 😊
Ohk but you are doing an overlock on same machine... that's y I'm bit confused...plz show ur overlocker in one video dear..
@@happypatel99 ua-cam.com/video/nH1zLhZT_B8/v-deo.html
what is the pattern you are wearing ? please share
It’s my Pansy pattern. I have it linked in the video description 😊
What do I do of my shirring does come undone?
If your shirring comes undone even after pressing and steaming then the tension of the stitches may not be right. You could alternatively stitch along the marked out triangle with a normal machine stitch and then cut just a little bit away from the stitching (the stitching should keep the shirring nicely in place). I hope this helps!
Don’t I need to serge the sleeve attachment?
