it was nominated for best editing in the Oscars and won a BAFTA for it. The editing truly elevates this film. My favourite is when his mother-in-law's ranting at him morphs into the queen of the night's aria in Magic Flute. I know it's kinda obvious, but it's still brilliantly done nevertheless. Similarly where La Cavalieri's scales practice at the home of Salieri seamlessly segue's into her 'ten minutes of ghastly scales' on stage in Die Entfuhrung.
Yes! It should have WON best editing lol The Killing Fields won but I really can't see how it could match up. I guess they had to acknowledge it somehow as it is also an excellent film.
Excellent casting - Jeffrey Jones looks almost IDENTICAL to the REAL Joseph II and this scene is great, as well. I love the "Is it Modern?" line and the overall awkwardness.
I looked at portraits of Joseph II. And Jeffrey Jones looks almost EXACTLY like him, it's weird how there is such an uncanny resemblance - its very creepy, to say the least.
Yes, absolutely. He was the first emperor in the time of enlightenment, who travelled incognito through His own Kingdom, to know about the real circumstances under which his people had to live.
Joseph II is to Austria what Napoleon is to France. One of the most iconic leaders of his time. Not truly the war mongering type, moreso a very modern ruler. He represents one of the beacons of austrian culture.
“Is it modern?” Love that line.
What makes it even better is the fact that Joseph II was a very liberal person and was pretty open to new things
I just noticed the wink from Mozart in this scene. He probably thought Salieri asked the emperor to come to the rehearsal, how sad.
Jeffery Jones has that regal European look about him , fits in with kind of movie. 👑
The guy next to Salieri reminds me of Bach.
@@joer4367 This guy was Giuseppe Bonno.
@@hoangkimviet8545 thanks.
Me watching The Last Jedi: “Well look at them!”
I love this emperor breaking tradition XD
Or perhaps restoring it!
He is the one who imposed the ban in the first place
when you watch a period piece and the emperor turns out to be the most relatable person
Look at that sudden cut from the rehearsal to the performance! This move is bizarrely well edited.

Josephinian laws LOL
GREAT MOVIE!!!
Oblige me.
Premier League without crowd noise is something like this.
Why did he banned the ballett in general during operas?
They say that Emperor Joseph II was still being respected up to this day in Austria, can anyone confirm this? (apologies for my English)
