The drainer makes a tube through the clay subsoil which if conditions are right is almost like a glazed pipe. Normal depth is 24" to the top of the mole, which channels the ground water into the shingle fill over the field drains. Its normally done at 90 degrees to the way the drains run, and every 6 feet or 9 feet. The metal foot (bullet) on the bottom of the blade is around 3" diameter and the ceramic expander (key ring) is 4" diameter, and its the latter compressing the subsoil that forms the tube.
