Ever since I watched Avatar Pandora has fascinated me. I do often look at the stars and films like Avatar do make me look closer, and wonder if something as fascinating and magical as that could actually exist out there, somewhere.
Earth in the past (and now) had some amazing animals that likely inspired the ones in Avatar. Giant birds, giant bugs, massive sea creatures and flying reptiles. And this is just on our own planet.
People who think tolkein has much better worldbuilding have no idea about the sheer scale of the lore of avatar(mostly because it wasn't explored in the movie). The worldbuilding in avatar is so intricate and well thought out that once you get into it, middle earth feels childish in comparison.
I don’t care if Endgame beats you, you’ll always be my favorite movie to ever exist. I remember watching this movie 7 time when it first came out..I was so young. I would find something new every time I watched it. Thank you James camron for making a world that will forever be apart of my life.

OOOOOOH!! Unobtanium is a superconductor! And judging by the hallelujah mountains, it’s capable of superconducting at room temperature… yeah, that’s a game-changer. I can see why humans would want to mine it.
The level of detail and beauty in Pandora is so dumbfounding! It has changed my perspective of nature and space forever. James Cameron will always be known for the Avatar franchise and for setting a new standard for CGI and storytelling.
This movie sets the standards of how CGI shouldve done Cameron invented special technics (facial camera and dots) to capture movements and facial expressions to incorporate with CGI for better quality and makes it more realistics..
@@yugen3968 think you meant David Attenborough brother of Richard (Jurassic Park). Sigourney did narrate Planet Earth Discovery Channel version while David did the BBC version.

The fact that they havent given it another name is strange but Onubtainium is "real". Unobtainium is any element/material currently undiscovered or uninvented, a material which is useful for a certain purpose, for instance "we cannot achieve a reliable form of supersonic flight without a unobtanium fuselage and wings since all current material expand too much under different temperatures"
While the imagined concept of planet Pandora is amazingly beautiful, it just can't exist, sadly. An earth sized and environed planet orbiting that close to a gas giant parent would be so ripped and torn by tidal forces, it would be a volcanic nightmare. Any oceans on it would have tides hundreds of feet high every day, and there would be no night-time darkness as depicted in the movie....whenever the gas giant was in the night sky, it would be so bright it would be like daylight all around. The only actual night-time darkness would be on those one or two days during the orbit where the giant was in it's "new" phase. Ahhh, Nature is so Cruel!....
It could be orbiting it far away the same distance Ganymede orbits jupiter...Ganymede doesn't experience much tidal heating or radiation as compared to Calisto or others but you are right the oceans would be a nightmare because they don't need much tidal forces to act up and it will also never experience darkness.
Dennodq Actually it WOULD experience darkness, but only once in a while, when Polyphemus aligns with Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B and is interposed between them and Pandora.
There is no such thing as infinity. Everything has a boundry of some sort. There may indeed be a vast number of alternate universes - and may indeed be an almost exact copy of you and me - but there is no such as an infinite number. I seriously doubt that the exact storyline of Avatar exists. It's a fictional tale.
Worldbuilding in this scale for a movie franchise has never been done before. The only thing coming close to this level of worldbuilding for a movie franchise is star wars.
Pandora, the perfect metaphor of our own biosphere here on Earth... The problem with humans is that they think as humans - anthropocentrically, thus unable to see the intricate connections between all life on planet Earth. . Avatar carries a strong social message to its audience, it perfectly depicts the avaricious nature of most humans, their exploitation of resources, to the point where they need to obtain the unobtainable, whilst indiscriminently and wantonly destroying another planet's rich and varied ecosystems. Just as they did on their own homeworld. . This is one reason why humans must never be allowed to leave the Sol system. Not that its likely in anycase, for most, if not all eukaryotic organisms are more than likely experiencing their final century, if not decades of evolution on this beleaguered Earth.
A former co-worker saw the film when it first came out. He said he didn't care for it. He said it was basically a "cowboys and Indians" movie, and the Indians won. I thought his remark very odd, but as the next couple of years progressed he became increasingly fascinated by the idea of an apocalyptic race war and became more and more right wing radicalized. He got really weird. I retired from there and chose to never have to contact him again.
".....in a dream-like landscape reminiscent of a Magritte painting....." Or, a Yes album cover - such as James Cameron probably would have used for cleaning the stems and seeds out of cheap weed during his teens and twenties, then stared at and said, "Wow, man," after smoking that weed.
10 years later i still have not seen any movie push CGI to this level. I mean they have tried but really c'mon it's James Cameron we are talking about here.
There are amazing things on Earth too. I think someone should make a movie with the exact story of Avatar except that the invading race is from Alpha Centauri and the indigenous people are humans. The mineral they are looking for is gold (also a very good conductor).

Avatar is to movies, as Lord of the Rings is to books in terms of world building. The level of detail to Pandora in this film is truly astonishing.
