Great update, is amazing to think how complex it seems but you make it sound reasonable to implement. Looking forward to seeing trains running from the top & bottom via the helix
Charlie, very informative video, it’s good to see that the viaduct is back on the layout. The alternative way your doing the baseboards is the route I’m after taking, therefore this video is helping me to realise what is in store when it comes to my own. Once again Thankyou for sharing and I definitely will be waiting in anticipation for the next episode. Stay safe and catch you soon
Wow Charlie, the revised layout is going to look amazing. Cant wait to see the trains running off the helix and at least over the viaduct. I bet theres been some industrial language off air. You must have the Patience of a Saint young sir. Really enjoyable watching again. Thanks for sharing.
This is serious stuff Charlie - very nice work as always and the going the extra mile with the woodwork to ensure everything is neat and tidy is definitely of benefit. Hope you have a good week and look forward to the next video.
Great progress Charlie. The open frame will give some good opportunities for when you scenic the area. You could perhaps stagger the gradient up to the station by using transition to flat before going up again.
@@ChadwickModelRailway Thanks Charlie, stay safe too. Just an idea about noise transmission, would there be any benefit if there was insulation between the baseboards and frame in addition to the track and baseboards?
My gosh Charlie that line into the helix looks like a ski slope!! I would strongly advocate for adding another loop to the helix lowering the clearance between each loop to the absolute minimum. If one has to choose between two conflicting criteria, to me, reliable operation on the mainline is paramount. Then deal with the resultant increase in the grade into the station. Scenically it would be easier to "sell" a short steep approach into a station than an overtly unrealistic length of steep mainline.
@@ChadwickModelRailway It would be nice to keep enough gradient to make it 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 like the main-line is climbing a bank. I would have to agree though, that does look a wee bit steep, even for BR(W). If you ease the gradient using the helix, the climb to Barnstaple may help to give more of an illusion of the main-line climbing too, in the opposite direction. Coupled with whatever actual slope remains in the main-line, it should still look pretty impressive. Something that occurred to me: the junction at the top of the hill might look more impressive if you can use some fancy, very gentle pointwork, giving a really realistic profile to the flow of your lines. I know someone makes "𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠" points - Peco? As an important feature on the layout, that might help avoid the slightly unrealistic junctions we see all too often , on 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 layouts of course.😁 Please don't skimp on filming the construction of the open-frame scenery. You won't "bore us"; this is something that isn't often covered. Happy New Year Charlie. I wonder what Chadwick will look like this time 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 year.
Great to see you back Charlie with a another fine video to kick off the New Year. I'm at a bit of a standstill currently waiting for some Peco points to arrive so that I can finnish off the fiddle yard and connect to the lower sections of my two helixes which are also currently under construction. I've connected up all of the existing track and points and all working fine so just a bit frustrated at the moment!
Yes Peter, these frustrating waiting for staff to arrive. I managed to get some points from DCC Train Automation. Perhaps give them a call. Regards Charlie
Great work again, seeing how you have gone about the helix, incline and open frame board has given me lots of helpful ideas and solutions I was struggling with. Looking forward to further updates and progress.

Hi Charlie, I found your channel about a month ago and am enjoying it. As a modeler in the USA, much of what you model does not pertain to me, but I find inspiration in it anyway. I did want to comment on your video, #68, "Rivet Counters and, Keyboard Warriors." I totally agree with you. My model railroad is for my enjoyment, as well as my son. As another UA-camr's channel is called "It's My Railroad." I model what I like and the heck with anyone else. Anyway, keep up the good work, Sherrie
Best move ever going open frame! Gives much more versatility for some cracking scenery. Top tip for your track deck is to brace the sides with some 3.6mm plywood as it will sag / warp if left un-braced. Tim.
Hi Charlie. Happy New year to you. This is turning out to be an adventurous upgrade to your layout. It is very interesting and enjoyable as well as informative watching your progress. I'm sure the end result will be superb. Keep up the good work. Cheers Chris.
Hi Charlie, another excellent presentation really enjoy what you are doing. Although my model railway is in the loft and is looking more complete it is not finished and probably never will be. But enjoying the journey is as important as finishing it to me. Ken
Happy New Year Charlie. Like Terry, below, I have no problem watching you screwing in every screw!! Thanks for your, as ever, complete and detailed explanation of progress being made on the revised layout. You have allowed us to escape from the dreadful situations around the country/world at this time so keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next update already!! Stay well and safe Charlie and all your loved ones. Cheers.
For what it's worth my entire layout is of open baseboard design made of that 9mm ply from B&Q. Similarly, I went for a brace every foot. It's held up pretty well in the 12 months that it's been together - only aprox a half mm sag at most of the track bed between braces. All the best, Jon M.
Very interesting. I had something similar on my mind where i would fix the first support each end as transition into the gradient allowing the ply trackbed to flex to adapt to the gradient then fix supports to hold in final possition, a simiar way you can use a long thin strip of wood to help possition flexible track icluding transition curves. Some day i'll actually get to build my own layout with thanks to you I have more ideas rolling round my head. Also I have no idea why anyone would thumbs down your videos when you're obviously an honest helpful man.
Another great video Charlie, I'm learning a lot from your videos & my layout is progressing nicely. Take care & I'm looking forward to your next video.👏👏👍
Thanks, Charlie, for the helpfull idea with the T-timber. T Think of using upsidedown U-timbers to get an alinement for a reaining plywood layer for the retaining wall. If you do your retaining wall as a big piece of stones perchance you would like to make it more interesting by using a SCALE CAST. mould. So you cast your walls and stanchions from gipsym and primer and paint it. It is a bit more work to be done but by painting the stones individually you can overtake your viaduct and get a step further in realism. Due to your intrest innsound reduction cramped silkpaper (used for securing pottery on transport) maybe a good and cheap matetial. glued under the plywood bars with the track from below using hotglue. I do stop every friday for your progress till nearly a year and be so gratefull for your service you do to all of us. If anybody tells me "Do not know hot to beat my time to death - lockdown is sooo boring." I do send them to your channel... 😊 Best wishes to you from Berlin, Chris
That’s most kind of you Chris. Also, many thanks for the tips, I am researching various options for the retaining walls currently. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Afternoon Charlie and a happy new year to you and all of your family 😃 What a fantastic video with great maths woodworking skills and not forgetting the screwing 😆 Everything you do Charlie is important to the model railway world as your explanation of things are first class 🤣 If you leave things out it’ll get lost in peoples minds 🤔 Hopefully you won’t be pushing much down the helix anyway 🙄 love the class 52 with blue and grey and one maroon coach 👍🏻 Take care until the next fantastic Chadwick episode. Happy new year, to you and yours. Missed the video yesterday. so I am catching up now (sat 9th Jan) Hope that you are well. And I am looking forward to more of your videos. Keep up the good work and stay safe!
Hello Charlie. Interesting and well presented video as always. On our club layout we have a fiddle yard below accessed via long inclines at 1 in 60 (avoiding the drag of curves on a helix) and even that is a challenge for some locos with long trains. Steep pulls lead to slow running and you can end up with trains spending much more time running hidden than they are on the scenic section. We seem to spend quite a bit of time peering underneath to check what’s going on and to sort out running issues. I know you are using magnetism for enhanced adhesion, but I would think very carefully before committing to such a steep incline.
Another fantastic video Charlie. I must get back in the Loft and complete my layout. Its in its early stages but uses both open and standard boards. The name is already decided Springfield Junction. Still undecided on a branch line or not but that will work itself out I am sure.
I love the way you do your base boards good thing you didnt make the mistake i made by using MDF clearly a wrong choice there for me but your base boards look good. Cheers and all the best. Nicholas.
I’m so pleased you enjoyed the videos Matty. Shooting at 50 frames per second, is more important than shooting at 4K in my book. So my next camera will be even more expensive! Regards Charlie

Thank you again for another enjoyable video. Would be great if you did a how to video on fitting Kadee couplings to Bachmann MK1 stock and some NEM pockets on some troublesome locos. In time I'm looking to replace tension lock couplings with something better.
Charlie, Happy New year and thanks for your continuing enthusiasm through this rubbish pandemic. It's keeping lots of us sane. Good dit as ever and stay safe during this latest lockdown. Irvine
Great progress Charlie, your handling of metric is getting better, a little hint, always use mm not cm ,measuring tapes that show cm as the main unit can be confusing for beginners, 2400x1200 is the old 8ftx4ft sheet size, have fun you are doing well, keep well and safe with your new lockdown
Charlie, I really impressed with the progress you are making. Like some other comments below, I think you will end up having to add a layer to the helix, but if you rotate the existing helix 120 degrees so that the 120 degree extended entry at the bottom is level, it might save a lot of adjusting of the existing gradient and get you the right height overall. Regards Andrew
Happy new year Charlie. It's looking good. I think it might be a good plan to provide some cheap lighting over the bottom layer. That cheap led lighting strip for kitchens sold on E bay should do the trick. If things don't go 100%, and they seldom do, you might be glad you've installed it.
Great update Charlie. 1 in 32 sounded quite steep but it looks absolutely fine in reality, so well worth cutting the T pieces and taking a real life look at it. Cheers
Great Video Charlie. There really is more to it than you would think. It confirms the time I spent calculating elevation changes on my layout. As always I enjoy the videos and the progress on your expanded layout. Happy new year and stay safe.

Fingers crossed David but I'm sure that it wont be all plain sailing.
Hi Charlie must say I can`t wait to see how this is goes together and run , I am envious of the space you have as I only have a 6 x 8 shad but with big ideas . hope you and yours are keeping well . John
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it John. Like many others it can be your own virtual layout. Regards Charlie
Great update, is amazing to think how complex it seems but you make it sound reasonable to implement. Looking forward to seeing trains running from the top & bottom via the helix
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Chris
Its friday, its Chadwick time, good video as allways
Thanks mate I’m so pleased that you appreciate it. Regards Charlie
I’m so pleased that you found the video useful Paul.
Wow Charlie, the revised layout is going to look amazing. Cant wait to see the trains running off the helix and at least over the viaduct. I bet theres been some industrial language off air. You must have the Patience of a Saint young sir. Really enjoyable watching again. Thanks for sharing.
Mickey, rest assured that sometimes the air is blue!
@@ChadwickModelRailway I could well imagine.
Great video as every Charlie. That derailment issue is going to be worse as the trains come down the inner line on the helix!
I will sort the coupling issue by out by then Mike.
Another great video Charlie. Thankyou. Hope you get over the cold soon!
Thanks Bill, but it wasn’t a cold, I had a sneezing spasm! Regards Charlie
This is serious stuff Charlie - very nice work as always and the going the extra mile with the woodwork to ensure everything is neat and tidy is definitely of benefit. Hope you have a good week and look forward to the next video.
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting Chris. Regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie for sharing the thought process and explaining the logic of your decisions. Great progress. Tony
Thanks Tony I’m so pleased you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Great progress Charlie. The open frame will give some good opportunities for when you scenic the area. You could perhaps stagger the gradient up to the station by using transition to flat before going up again.
An interesting point mate, regards Charlie
Good vision as to what you want to do - can't wait till its finished
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting Fergus
Hello Charlie, happy new year, I’m inclined to think your ‘videos’ have reached another level. This one is the best this year. Keep it going. David.
It might be the best one this year David but it is the only one this year! Stay safe mate, regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway Thanks Charlie, stay safe too. Just an idea about noise transmission, would there be any benefit if there was insulation between the baseboards and frame in addition to the track and baseboards?
Yes David, I might try some car insulation material.
nice one charlie looking very good at this present time derek.
Thanks Derek, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it.
I’m with you on this one mate, I think you’re pushing on an open door. But it’s worth checking it out to see what is viable. Regards Charlie
As an important feature on the layout, that might help avoid the slightly unrealistic junctions we see all too often , on 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 layouts of course.😁
Please don't skimp on filming the construction of the open-frame scenery. You won't "bore us"; this is something that isn't often covered.
Happy New Year Charlie. I wonder what Chadwick will look like this time 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 year.
Joining us in open baseboard construction Charlie looking forward to see more
Perhaps (baseboards is something I should have considered many years ago. Still we live and learn, regards Charlie
Another fantastic stream. I will be using a lot of your tips. Very inspirational thank you.
That’s very kind of you to say so Gordon.
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting mate. Stay safe regards Charlie
Nice one Charlie, good to see the layout developing, I think it will look great. Look forward to your next video. I'm spending the weekend building my lathe and milling machine so this was a nice little half hour period to relax and watch someone else at work! regards Gareth
I’m so pleased you enjoyed it Gareth. And good luck with your new toy. I must confess I wish I had room for some decent woodworking tools. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie the Helix is a real Tail Chaser 😂😂
Hi Colin, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it mate.
Anyway, keep up the good work,
Sherrie
Thanks Sherrie I’m so pleased that you enjoyed my little rant!
That's really coming together now. Fantastic. Love your professional expressions, "whack it in". 😄
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting John. Regards Charlie
Best move ever going open frame! Gives much more versatility for some cracking scenery. Top tip for your track deck is to brace the sides with some 3.6mm plywood as it will sag / warp if left un-braced.
Tim.
Hi Tim, many thanks for the tip. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie. Happy New year to you. This is turning out to be an adventurous upgrade to your layout. It is very interesting and enjoyable as well as informative watching your progress. I'm sure the end result will be superb. Keep up the good work. Cheers Chris.
Hi Chris, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, another excellent presentation really enjoy what you are doing. Although my model railway is in the loft and is looking more complete it is not finished and probably never will be. But enjoying the journey is as important as finishing it to me. Ken
That’s great Ken. I’m so pleased to have you onboard.
Great update Charlie !! Thanks for sharing this video. Cheers Ono.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Onno.
Cheers.
What a heartwarming comment Murray.
Stay safe mate, regards Charlie
For what it's worth my entire layout is of open baseboard design made of that 9mm ply from B&Q. Similarly, I went for a brace every foot. It's held up pretty well in the 12 months that it's been together - only aprox a half mm sag at most of the track bed between braces.
All the best,
Jon M.
Thanks Jon, great info.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Kev. The thumbs I suspect are from other UA-camrs!
Another great video Charlie, I'm learning a lot from your videos & my layout is progressing nicely. Take care & I'm looking forward to your next video.👏👏👍
Thanks Rob, I’m so pleased that you find my videos interesting.
Best wishes to you from Berlin, Chris
That’s most kind of you Chris. Also, many thanks for the tips, I am researching various options for the retaining walls currently. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Lookin' good Charlie! Stay safe and healthy ya mad lad.
Thanks mate, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Stay safe over there, regards Charlie
Awesome job charlie
Thanks LT. Regards Charlie.
Cheers Stevie 😎
What a heartwarming comment Stevie. Many thanks, stay safe, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, another interesting video of your progress. If you have any flex you can put a couple of diagonals on the frame.
Hi Stewart, an interesting point about the diagonal, I hadn’t thought about that. Regards Charlie
Another brilliant video. Looking forward to the next one 👍🏻
Thanks Jon you’re too kind. Regards Charlie
Brilliant, thank you very much!
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Roger.
Happy new year, to you and yours. Missed the video yesterday. so I am catching up now (sat 9th Jan) Hope that you are well. And I am looking forward to more of your videos. Keep up the good work and stay safe!
Thanks Mike I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the channel. Best wishes for 2021, stay safe, regards Charlie
I think that you’re right Richard, it looks like an extra layer on the helix and reduce its incline is my best option. Regards Charlie
Another fantastic video Charlie. I must get back in the Loft and complete my layout. Its in its early stages but uses both open and standard boards. The name is already decided Springfield Junction. Still undecided on a branch line or not but that will work itself out I am sure.
Good on you Glenn, now get building mate.
I love the way you do your base boards good thing you didnt make the mistake i made by using MDF clearly a wrong choice there for me but your base boards look good. Cheers and all the best.
Nicholas.
Thanks Nicholas, MDF should be banned. Regards Charlie
Love you videos ! Keep producing great content. I can’t wait till you use a 4K camera 🎥 I just got a new phone for Christmas
I’m so pleased you enjoyed the videos Matty. Shooting at 50 frames per second, is more important than shooting at 4K in my book. So my next camera will be even more expensive! Regards Charlie
It's going to be a brilliant layout when it's all done, all your videos is going to help me out a lot when I get mine started, please keep them coming. And a happy new year to you and your family 🙂🙂
Thanks Lee you’re too kind. Stay safe mate, regards Charlie
Thank you again for another enjoyable video. Would be great if you did a how to video on fitting Kadee couplings to Bachmann MK1 stock and some NEM pockets on some troublesome locos. In time I'm looking to replace tension lock couplings with something better.
Thanks Simon I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Do take a look at my back catalogue as I have covered various couplings in the past. Regards Charlie
Charlie, Happy New year and thanks for your continuing enthusiasm through this rubbish pandemic. It's keeping lots of us sane. Good dit as ever and stay safe during this latest lockdown. Irvine
I’m so pleased that you enjoy the channel Irvine.
Yes Jed, metric and imperial are a pain in the backside! Regards Charlie
Looking good. Have just started my new Highland line layout .With invaluable tips from yourself . Happy New Year from a very cold and snowy Inverness.
Gosh, wrap up warm David it’s going to get even colder mate. Regards Charlie
Really good Charlie. learnt a lot today. Now going to rip some of mine down and start again. Love the new DCC controller.
Peter, you’re starting to make me feel guilty. Regards Charlie
Happy New Year Charlie. Looking forward to the bench and track work between the helix and viaduct.
Thanks NW. I’m so pleased that you’re enjoying the ride.
Happy new year Charlie, glad it’s all starting to come together at last, you can see the light at the end of the “tunnel” lol
Thanks Barry, stay safe, regards Charlie
Charlie, I really impressed with the progress you are making. Like some other comments below, I think you will end up having to add a layer to the helix, but if you rotate the existing helix 120 degrees so that the 120 degree extended entry at the bottom is level, it might save a lot of adjusting of the existing gradient and get you the right height overall. Regards Andrew
I think adding another level to the Helix is inevitable Andrew. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Happy new year Charlie. It's looking good. I think it might be a good plan to provide some cheap lighting over the bottom layer. That cheap led lighting strip for kitchens sold on E bay should do the trick. If things don't go 100%, and they seldom do, you might be glad you've installed it.
An excellent point Richard. I have considered buying those strips of LED lights. Perhaps still more research. Regards Charlie
Great update Charlie. 1 in 32 sounded quite steep but it looks absolutely fine in reality, so well worth cutting the T pieces and taking a real life look at it. Cheers
Thanks Davie but I will run trains up it before I commit. Regards Charlie
Another fascinating update Charlie and a good one to start the New Year off with. Take care..all the best.
Thanks Tim, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting mate. Regards Charlie
Great video Charlie your steaming along with your progress
Thanks LS, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Best wishes for 2021.
Great progress Charlie. I was getting worried about having to take that helix to pieces to add a further section. Well thought out. Stay safe!
Thanks HA, the helix can be adjusted fairly easily. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, great progress and I’m very impressed with the maths, keep up the good work and a happy and safe new year to you and yours. 👍
Thanks Kevin I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Regards Charlie
Great Video Charlie. There really is more to it than you would think. It confirms the time I spent calculating elevation changes on my layout. As always I enjoy the videos and the progress on your expanded layout. Happy new year and stay safe.
What a heartwarming comment Dan. Stay safe mate and best wishes for 2012 regards Charlie
Looking forward to seeing how this all comes together, it's looking a lot better now as I can see what you have in mind now....Happy New Year to you and yours 🍾🎉
Thanks JO, I’m so pleased that you can visualise the end result now. Regards Charlie
