Pretty sure this is flat-out the best bird hunting video ever produced, and I don't mean just on youtube. And I thought long and hard before writing that, then erased it not once but twice because nobody likes overstatement. But it's just true. Every single thing about it, from the spectacular cinematography (those drone shots, jeez), to the smart, deadpan, relatable narration (seriously), to the drama of seeing all those birds flush over and over in one of the most breathtaking hunting areas any of us will ever see. You always make incredible videos but this one is just way above and beyond. Respect.
So much nostalgia watching this hunt. My Chukar hunts were mostly on the lower Salmon, just north of Hells Canyon. Finally had to put my hunting partner of 13 years (my GSP - Taz) down last Christmas. Sure miss the old fella, and our hunts together. I'm 67 now, so think I'm done with those rough Chukar hills myself. Lot's of great memories though.
Blessed to have spent 🙏 13 weeks in Idaho this year . Trip of a lifetime ! Hell's Cayon flat out beat us . Frigid truck camping and grueling hikes . Drop dead beautiful . 12 plus miles , no flushes . You make it look easy . No cell service , white knuckle driving . I can't wait for the rematch . Video just doesn't capture how wild America can be . Thanks for sharing 👍
Without question best chukar hunting vid I’ve seen, and trust me I have seen them all! Nobody captures what it’s actually like out there like you did in this one. Those birds chuckin all around you had me and my dog amped!! Great job and thanks for helping with my post chukar season blues!
Thanks for a great video and taking us along. The scenery was beautiful and I can see why your dog better be a great retriever and in great shape it definitely separates the men from the boys. Your dogs are a joy to watch I’m always looking forward to your next video. Be safe.
Your videos are epic, from the places you go, the film work, the birds, and the dog work is off the charts. Hands down the best upland program of all times. You should really be proud of it all.
The little corner of the Earth I'm lucky enough to live, fish and hunt in. Thanks for letting everybody else know about it🤐! You know what they say about hunting Chukars....the first time is for sport, every other time is for revenge. Glad you had a good day.
It’s alright. The vast majority of folks I take with me chukar hunting only go that one time. Not for the faint of heart. The ruggedness of chukar country keeps it wild and only true chukar hunters are really crazy enough to go check things out. Chances are they already know about hells canyon.
@@gurufishing5371 Yup, I’m trying to convince NK that he needs to go out with me, but we’re both well into our 70s. Maybe we need to stay with the old man terrain.
Beautifully filmed. The ground looks incredibly hard work to hunt but spectacular! Watching the shot pattern hit the lake and spread out at 26:54 was great, really interesting to see how 5 shot in tight chokes holds together down range.
Eric -- I always look forward to your videos and this one did not disappoint. Really amazing country, and the sheer number of birds is incredible. We've had low numbers here for several years due to drought. I may try further north next season.
I just have a GoPro on a head mount. I have an entire video dedicated to equipment for filming and editing on my Patreon page if you are interested. www.patreon.com/ericforrester

Such a cool video! Thanks for creating these Eric. If I can convince my wife that we need a pointer to hunt species of birds our flusher can't, I may be looking to buy a pup in a couple years! Haha, hoping and praying. I've got your website saved until then. Great work on these videos! I own a video marketing company and enjoy the highly produced hunting content out there, but have especially come to enjoy this style of "ride-along hunting videos". I feel like I learn so much! Whether that be from observing the habitat, watching how the birds flush (where and when) as well as how you approach them looking for shooting angles. It's just great stuff! Good work man.
Eric, Thanks for all the great videos. I hunt behind Wirehairs too. I live and hunt in northern Nevada. I keep Toyo g with the idea of hunting Hells Canyon but a biologist at the sheep show told me you need a boat. Thanks again for sharing your adventures

Good Job and please keep on making them sir👍🏻. One question though, what choke were you using in this hunt? Thanks again. You are my favorite youtube hunter👍🏻
Great video, Eric! That is amazing country, and you did a terrific job of showing it. Hunting there must present some unique challenges, like getting to the birds to make a shot... as you discussed. Also, like you said, it seems like you've got to have a good retriever. Thanks for all the effort to share your adventures!

Of all the videos I have watched on the subject, I have enjoyed this one the most. Beautiful country. A couple of questions... You mention that you go down to #5 shot when hunting Chucker. Are you using a 12 or 20-gauge shotgun? Also, what breed is Tubby? From the video, that dog seems evenly mannered. It is not as caffeinated as a Brittany. I am just curious. Thanks
Hi Erick another exciting hunt, I know it’s very hard to hunt chukar cause I used to hunt them myself without the help of dog . One interesting fact that chukars have been introduced to USA from pakistan in mid fifties.
May I ask which month you recorded this hunt? It’s just strange to me that you have so large groups of birds so late in the year. Here we usually see these flocks august to October
Do you shoot 5s or 6s? I'm torn between the two. I've had great success on both, but I really can't decide which I should stick with. I know shot size won't make up for poor shooting, but I'm asking for your opinion because of your success at longer ranges and close.
No worries. I’m not sold on any shot size yet, still experimenting. I think the 5’s help with the going away shots. It’s hard to kill them shooting at their butt.
To Dale Zoon. No offense but I removed your comment because I don’t discuss locations publicly. I will be sure to check out your channel. Thanks for your comment.
I think this is a good point. Part of what I like about hunting, like most people, is more than just the hunt. Learn how to read a map, take topography into consideration, use all of the tools at our disposal such as areal view maps, allows us hunters to become well rounded and pass on skills to the next generation that are quickly being lost. When I use to take a trip we would pull out the atlas and map our trip. Now we just navigate. But prehunt planning such as researching locations builds that skill and is o so rewarding when we hit the mother load like you did on this trip. The adventure aspect of hunting is part of the draw for me and if locations are blasted over the internet I think it takes away from the adventure.
Absolutely. We have it so easy these days. So much information at our fingertips. People used to spend years learning what I can learn in a few hours on the Internet.
You don't need #5's , you need more pellets hitting the bird. Biggest you should go is 6's. If you are taking longer shots, IM choke is a good idea. I shoot a O/U and in Jan I go to Mod / Imp Mod for my chokes. Nice video, Tubbs is a stud.
I’ve heard that from other experienced Chukar hunters also about the shot size. I feel like I’ve had less cripples with 5’s but it may just be better shot selection. I might try 6’s again next year. Thanks for the insight Kent. 👍
@@ericforrester1 I've hunted that area. And s slopes in there don't grow much cover and those birds get jumpy. You did well to get under a few.
