As a hispanic, I really want to thank you for pointing out how cultural differences impact screening, diagnosis and treatment. Our culture is still very close minded and ADHD symptoms are often labeled as misbehavior. Medication is sadly demonized and mental health crisis is a sign of weakness. There needs to be openmindedness about all of this within cultures

What Giuliana tells is so significant that I usually prefer to read/watch advise/information or mutual support in English language. But we need to do something in order to alleviate so much suffering of neglected ADHD not dx and not treated people.

I'm in my 40s and am getting my assessment this afternoon and am just trying to learn more about what I'm in for 😅. Listening to this almost makes me want to cry thinking about going through school as a kid and also all the things I struggle with now. I was basically treated in the opposite way I should have been. Thanks for adding some clarity to what I'm going through/gone through.

It was interesting to learn that it takes two years for the neurotransmitters to return to the persons “normal” levels. I asked about this years ago and was told by multiple psychologists and psychiatrists that people bounce back from neurotransmitter changes and meds etc within 6 weeks. I knew they were not giving correct information. Thank you for being so informative.

Can reading be a special interst of people with adhd or is that a sign that maybe they don't have adhd ?

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  8 місяців тому

Thank you for your question. * Reading can indeed be a special interest for people with ADHD. While it's true that individuals with ADHD may have difficulty with tasks that require sustained mental effort, such as reading long chapters or engaging in standardized testing, this does not mean they cannot have a strong interest in reading. In fact, when people with ADHD are engaged in activities that they find particularly interesting, they can experience a surge of dopamine and norepinephrine, which can help them pay attention and maintain motivation. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as hyperfocus, where a person with ADHD becomes deeply engrossed in an activity that is rewarding or stimulating to them.
It's important to recognize that ADHD symptoms can vary widely among individuals, and the presence of a special interest such as reading does not rule out the possibility of having ADHD. Moreover, strategies like breaking tasks into smaller chunks, combining tasks with enjoyable activities, and using visual aids can help individuals with ADHD improve their concentration and focus, potentially making reading more accessible and enjoyable.
In summary, an intense interest in reading is not necessarily indicative of not having ADHD. People with ADHD can have a wide range of interests and hobbies, and with the right strategies and supports, they can engage in activities that require attention and concentration, including reading.

People should research all the symptoms of adhd before concluding they have it. Some people say they do because they have one or two of these listed characteristics.
I've even come across people who were never diagnosed, don't have most the symptoms, and clearly haven't researched the condition at all lol.

So maybe its just like cancer where so far we have not found positives and if mozart had cancer we would not attribute his skill to cancer but a different trait of mozard would we. Adhd people can focus but not sustain and the brain does not work on many other levels like intuition m/ mental imagery and generall working memory.

As the most cited adhd researcher says over and over but people wont listen its not about attention its executive functioning and very subsurface attention over time.
Not a quick attention for the first time or being distracted by birds but happy and everything working perfect thats something else. The distractability comes from strong boredom coupled with pain and bad feelings that come when u stare at a wall for hours and u cant take it because its so meaningless. Attention = chemicals [and many other things] -> reduce pain and all kinds of negative feelings (diving in and forgetting the world, flow -> needed to sooth the pain -> give me anything that releases soothing chemicals -> birds? I dont fucking care ANYTHING:
    -move
    -fidget
    -talk
    -fantasy
    -hit youlsef
    -more pain
    -immaturity
-sex, drugs, violence anything that satisfies something in your brain it would be a good book or maths just u cant controll it the body decides what it want. Like a neuronal network deciding what stuff to encourage and discouraging you. And u (PFC) having little controll
U would be the most logical controlled angel with a suit that loves gandma but ur goals have no impact on that u are in pain until u jump out the window to satisfy some strange thing in you or be lazy all day to not need as much dopamine to sooth the pain.
Yes it sucks. Yes i have no idea how u came to the idea that adhd people just have “more energy” if that where true you would not see mire seditive behaviour and overweight u would see happy sixpack people with girlfriends and a great job.
Sport drains willpower if its not fun for most people its fun but people who have no or little cointroll have to pray there amygdala feels like it or its gonna be very very very unpleasant

This seems good, however the irony of having a very long video to explain ADHD is almost funny. I'm sure you can do a ten min video with the main pointers. One of the many benefits of having ADHD is we can immediately see how something could have been presented more efficiently, that's another reason why we switch off...we get the points, without the rambling. I don't know how neurotypical brains can stand the rambling.

It’s not only the criteria that determines giving a diagnosis. it’s a matter of how much someone’s life is messed up by having the symptoms, how severe the symptoms are and how much distress it causes. And ADHD can cause *huge* distress and completely wreck peoples’ lives.
