Kinnock would have been an excellent Prime Minister. The MSM were shameful, and I've never forgotten the Sun's front page attack on Kinnock on election day, one of many examples of the harm done to this country by Rupert Murdoch. Sadly, I fear the right wing media will try to do the same with Starmer.

Kinnock is being typically very modest. He inherited Labour Party ashes and a majority against him of 144 and he rehabilitated them almost single handedly and nearly pulled it off in 1992. He’s too classy to point the finger but I will. The Murdoch press that election was beyond contemptible, even by their own low standards. Those tabloids had more readership and reach 30 years ago than now and their relentless character assassination of Kinnock and his team was an affront to the democratic process.
It was Tory propaganda aided by the right wing press that secured victory for Major in 1992, plus the fact he was not Thatcher, enabling the Tories to fool people into thinking they were more moderate. The 1992 defeat was a calamity and one of the most consequential elections in UK history; everything Kinnock had warned against in the eighties and in the campaign has come true and worse. If he had won Labour would not have surrendered to Thatcherism as it did under Blair and Britain would be a different place. The same can be said if John Smith had not died and won the next election. I am on the left and think Kinnock moved Labour too far to the right but by today's standards a Kinnock government would have been to the left of Blair and Starmer should he become PM in 2024. His concession speech on the steps of HQ in Walworth Road in the early hours of the morning of the 10th April was profoundly sad and prescient. Glenys Kinnock was by his side, of course. May she rest in peace.
@@eightiesmusic1984 There are many fork in the road moments in history where another outcome could have massively altered the trajectory of a country (I agree about the tragedy of the death of John Smith, probably the politician I have admired most since I became politically aware in the 1970s, and across the Pond how different might the US be if Al Gore had not been robbed in 2000). I can’t in a million years dismiss Blair as Thatcherite, because, as a civil servant during his first administration, the pro activity and plethora of primary legislation designed to improve lives, was dizzying compared to the cut cut cut mantra of Thatcher. Good Friday Agreement, Neighbourhood Renewal Units, Surestart Centres, Rough Sleepers Unit, National minimum wage, tenancy protection legislation, I could go on. He was flawed of course, all politicians to some extent are, but nothing like Thatcher.
@@gerardmackay8909I lived through the Blair/ Brown era and there is a whole raft of legislation that was implemented which did a lot of good, there is no denying that. However, on the economy Blair accepted the Thatcherite settlement instead of reversing it as Labour should and could have done easily with a huge majority. Thatcherism is the root cause of every problem plaguing Britain- we live in Thatcher's Britain due to the egregious effects of her policies and Labour's failure to reverse her creed. Most voters who switched to Labour in 1997 identified with Tory policies, thus there was no shift to the left in the country under FPTP. But Labour could have done so much more to build a fairer society and prevent income inequality from widening further while in office, as it has continued to relentlessly since 2010. The left behind voted for Brexit in large numbers in 2016 because their lives had not improved. It was against their best interests, of course. You mention the minimum wage- while better than the alternative it was set too low and allowed employers to avoid paying a living wage. Tax credits also subsidised low wages. If John Smith has become PM, although he was on the right of the party he would not have shifted even further to the right as Blair did, inequality would have been substantially reduced, left and right could have co-existed effectively together, and there would have been no Iraq in all likelihood. I can still remember the shock of his death in May 1994 and exactly where I was when I was told. Britain has been ill served by so many of its politicians but he was an exception and exceptional individual.
@@eightiesmusic1984 I agree with virtually everything you say, apart from conflating Blair’s political journey with Thatcher’s, and there’s more I could add. John Smith would have won the 97 election but with nothing like the majority Blair got (no bad thing) because, unlike Blair, he would not have prostrated himself at the altar of Murdoch and would have been opposed by the tabloids. He was hugely motivated to achieve constitutional reform, something Blair all but abandoned, and the House of Lords would certainly not exist in its present form, stuffed to the gills with creatures such as Baroness Mone. He was more equivocal about electoral reform but wouldn’t have been in a position to abandon it completely as Blair did with his 180 majority. More importantly he would never have cosied up with the Bush administration warmongers and we would never have invaded Iraq ( no matter how ‘sexed up’ the dossier was). Goodness 30 years on we are experiencing the consequences of his loss so acutely.

A great Welshman of highest calibre. One of the very best politicians we ever had, loved round the UK. A gentleman. Seeing him an old man makes me feel old lol.
One of a generation of politicians with clear convictions and principles. I didn't always like him or agree with him, but history will be kind to him. You knew where he stood and what he believed in; today's politicians could learn from him.

What a touching interview
It’s funny that when I was younger I saw Neil Kinnock as just a Labour figurehead and not someone we wanted running the country….added to that my family just didn’t sit “on that side of the fence”.
As time passes you remember that these are just people and I think that he speaks calmly and eloquently about a diverse range of subjects and he seems like a genuine guy.
Along with John Smith probably the best prime minister this country never had.

I heard this today while driving, and I’m surprised they replayed it here, although they have edited it heavily. I thought the interviewer showed considerable sensitivity once Neil was overcome with grief. I’m not sure he should have broached the subject of his wife’s death during the interview, as it was clearly still raw. Kinnock is looking in good shape. I don’t share his politics, but I do respect him.
I think it was right to acknowledge the sad passing of Glenys Kinnock. I'm sure this, or the extent of the edit, would have been agreed with Neil.

I do think Labour needs to be far bolder, and what concerns me is that they are still not recognising the main problem... the "right wing media!"
I had hoped when Blair was elected he'd have brought in legislation to stop the newspapers and other media pushing their bias right wing agenda, instead the Blair Government inched further to the right wing to try to appease these forces?

What most commentators so far have failed to mention is that Neil Kinnock is a genuine human being who has submitted his life to the betterment of others, based on his own philosophical beliefs. I admire him so much and wish him nothing but peace and happiness.

Neil paved the way to get Labour back into power...no doubt about that at all. The Sun in particular, thanks to Murdoch, waged a deeply personal campaign to prevent him from becoming PM. A decent man, who maybe was too good for Westminster..that is to say he was honest and said what he thought. Condolences to his family for the loss of his beloved wife Glenys.

Regardless of his politics etc Neil is grieving for his wife as is his family and I send my heartfelt and sincere condolences to them all. I hope he finds comfort in his life and hold onto many, many happy and great memories.

He's a nice guy met loads in Ealing where he lived with the family. He used shop in m&s Ealing where I worked.
Was he nice to talk to? The 1992 defeat was the first time I was old enough to vote and I desperately wanted to see a Labour government. I think he would have made an excellent Prime Minister.
A great man - like Michael Heseltine would have made a wonderful Prime Minister - a huge shame we never had these two in the role.
As a Tory, I would have accepted Kinnock as a PM but NEVER. EVER Heseltine who is a crook.

I’m conflicted on Kinnock. On one hand he is so principled, clear minded, able to communicate great truths about social democracy in a characteristically florid but compelling way. I would go as far as to agree with people who say he is the best PM we never had. BUT his fierce anti-Welsh attitude, hatred of the Welsh language and Welsh culture are despicable. These flaws ruin Kinnock for me.
He could never see the difference between nationalism and the preservation of the unique and ancient heritage of his own homeland, and that is truly sad.

@ryanconnor. Thank you for reminding us of this. Two generations ,have passed and all these things have been forgotten. We achieved these amazing reforms because decent men and women devoted their lives to the task of bringing them into law. What has happened since is utterly tragic. The young voters of today simply don’t know that they’ve been swindled out of their true inheritance - by the con-men and thieves that they elected to power.

I feel that Keir Starmer is the same.
I was absolutely gutted when his did not get in ,in 92. And the country was poorer for it. I hope he is ok- so sad 😢 He is correct - we cannot take a Labour win for granted as the Tories are crafty. I so hope we win as the country is in a terrible state and where I live , so many vulnerable people are suffering.

Neil Kinnock was always a thoroughly decent human being and an effective politician.- one who helped pull the Labout Party back into the mainstream. Keir Starmer has done much to emulate him in repeating that exercise since 2019 and I hope, in 2024, Neil will feel some satisfaction and vindication of his effforts.
