  • Former Labour leader Lord Kinnock opens up about his wife Glenys' battle with Alzheimer's, telling of his sadness that she is 'ceasing gradually to be the person she used to be.'
A 10-year plan to tackle dementia will have a big focus on prevention, the Health Secretary has said, as he promised a “seismic shift” in how the condition is tackled.
Sajid Javid told the Alzheimer’s Society annual conference in central London his plan will look at why people fall ill, with figures suggesting as much as 40% of dementia is potentially preventable.
“We know now that what’s good for the heart is also good for the brain,” he said.
“Action on high blood pressure, physical inactivity, alcohol, obesity and healthy eating all have a part to play.
“So we’re going to be very ambitious on prevention.”
However, charities said the Government had not yet delivered its previous promise to double dementia funding.

I work with people diagnosed with dementia/althzeimers, it is such a cruel disease, no one is immune to this, it is frightening. It is the dismantling of a person whilst they are still alive. How cruel is that? I feel for all families affected ❤️

Beautiful interview. I’m a great admirer of Neil Kinnock. He has a beautiful marriage and family life and I wish him and Glynis courage and strength in this difficult situation.

I truly liked Glenys Kinnock right off the bat. I am not a fan of Neil K, but truly liked Glenys so much so when I was pregnant I considered the name Glenys, I had a boy I decided against Glenys. I was truly sorry to hear of her dementia diagnosis. I take my hat off to Neil & his dedication & love for her. Bravo Mr. Kinnock you have my vote for being a good human & husband. A very honourable man indeed.

A family who lived very well of the tax payers and didn't achieve a lot. Like a lot of top labour people were keen on the EU because when you fail in British politics its good to have the EU to fall back on hence son keen to overturn Brexit. Unlike Alistar Darling who was a genuine asset to the UK. RIP.

All love and hugs to Neil kinnock after the passing of his wife. Dementia hits many families, including my own, my paternal grandfather - we coped until it became necessary to find a care home for him. But there is no recovery - such an unkind end to anyone's life..

A very touching interview, handled with sensitivity and warmth.
I have very early memories of the Kinnock's, largely owing to my parents being Labour party activists at the time, as well as supporters of the leadership of the Labour movement. My memory of the Kinnock's was of a formidable team, Glynes & Neil. A couple who, without privilege, sense entitlement or inherited wealth, got to the top through the determined belief that politics must work for the many, not the few. They had a vision for a fairer Britain, which I consider, had they been successful, would have improved the lives of so many, benefitting us today. Instead, Thatcherism divided us, and their vision was sadly never realised. Perhaps we wouldn't be in the unenviable predicament of today had the Kinnock's been in charge back then.
It was obvious then, as it is now, that this couple, Glynes & Neil Kinnock, were entirely devoted to one another, and it was heartwarming to hear that their devotion continues today.
I wish Mr & Mrs Kinnock my best, and offer my gratitude for what they tried to achieve for Britain.

I noticed in the photo, all these MPs not wearing ties, Tony Blair was the first to start all this nonsense, and they all followed suit,
