If I'm remembering correctly, this is exactly why the author of hunger games said it would never be a game or park attraction, because the point would be entirely lost.
I would actually want to make a Hunger Games video game, but instead of making a "fun" multiplayer game where you can casually murder your friends, it would be a brutal survival horror game that shows the player how terrifying the Hunger Games truly are. I would also add Permadeath, so if your character dies, you would have to play as someone else in the next group of tributes.
Mr Beast is the kinda guy who sees "Do not make the Torment Nexus" and is like "WE GATHERED 1,000,000 KIDS AND PUPPIES AND WE CREATE THE TORMENT NEXUS FROM DO NOT MAKE THE TORMENT NEXUS"
It’s crazy how it’s come to this for people to earn money because they aren’t paid a fair living wage. I know they obviously consent but jobs just don’t pay enough for most people anymore and that’s the sad part 😔 Love your movie comparisons especially Parasite, that is a great movie, really effective with their message. Great video Amy ❤️
Seeing squid games being marketed like this reminds me of what happened to the vault boy for fallout they used to be a symbol for mocking corporations and how they take advantage of people who arent well off, now they are what they warned of and no longer represent what they used to sad times
11:25 Yeah, that Domino's ad in particular is.... icky. Great video! Well put, and I can't wait for Squid Game S3 to introduce a streaming service to broadcast all the games to VIPs for one flat rate.
I agree with 99% of the video, with the exception that it being modeled after Squid Game is the biggest contributing factor to it feeling dystopian. It is 100% tone deaf for sure, but I think it goes beyond that. I ended up watching 3 Episodes of the show, and what truly sets it apart from other game shows, is the focus on on making the players miserable. In 3 episodes, they have very few actual "games". A large part of the show is either guilting people into self sacrificing themselves and leaving the game "for their team" (Despite the fact that this is not a team game) or seeing if Mr. Beast can bribe someone to eliminate others. That feels like it was 75% of the show at that point I stopped watching. The only way to get entertainment value out of that, is if you want to see people suffer as they get eliminated because someone else pushed or didn't push a button. Another aspect that really hurts the show and further reinforces that dystopian feeling, is Mr. Beast (And his cronies) are just not good hosts. They are surprisingly uncharismatic or funny. While Mr. Beast knows how to talk loudly and without much stuttering or filler words, he has zero charisma when it comes time to actually talk to the contestants. It further highlights the class dynamics from Squid Game talked about in the video, as it comes across as elites who have no understanding of how to even interact with regular humans anymore. After 3 episodes, it was by far the worst "game" show I've ever watched. Maybe it gets better once there's less contestants and they can actually focus on people more, but 3 episodes is a long time to "hope it gets better". Unfortunately, it will definitely get more seasons and I think there's little chance they change any of the formula. As for what Season 2 might bring to up the stakes, by the time we get there people might actually be ready to fight to the death for a small chance at wealth.
This channel is quickly becoming my favourite commentary-thing on youtube. The editing is so fun and well done, and the way you approach and talk about topics makes it really easy to jump in even if I've never heard anything about it before lol
Honestly the show gets a bit more dystopian as it goes as Mr. Beast leans in HEAVILY on the psychological conundrums. Like 8 out of 10 games are lowkey psychological torture. I find it morbidly entertaining in a way that I can't put down, and you summed up pretty well why I feel this way. I don't blame you for not wanting to continue watching. Also, you have a nice voice, have you ever considered doing ASMR? /s
I think you went a bit too easy on MrBeast. He’s not some naive loveable goofball with a heart of gold that got too caught up in making the perfect show to notice all the human rights violations occurring around him. He’s entirely aware of the misery he’s causing and doesn’t care because the spectacle and shock of what he’s doing will profit him more than any backlash he receives will negatively impact him. He knows what he’s doing and knows that he’ll get away with it.
I'm a lifelong game show fanboy (and two-time game show alum), and the best game shows are about having fun, playing a game, and while yes cash and prizes are the draw, the best are about the game and the fun the players have. When you are just exploiting the contestants and playing up how desperate they are for cash, and relying on their suffering for ratings, the audience gets turned off. You end up with a show like "Queen for a Day" which exploited desperate women who had to compete with each other over how much they suffered to be handed some prizes and be called "Queen."
What little I've seen of Mr. Beast's philanthropy has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, and I couldn't put my finger on why until now, but now it feels obvious. Yes, he's giving away money, which is good, but he's also doing it for all the wrong reasons- to get attention more than to actually help.
While the game shows on Dropout aren't as mainstream as a lot of other shows, they do a fantastic job of being fresh and doing something fun that you can clearly tell the contestants, hosts and crew love doing! While releases can be a bit sporadic with how many shows they have and them taking pretty long breaks in between seasons, it is still 100% worth it in my opinion and it all just feels like the exact opposite of dystopian.
Gosh, everytime i hear that line about how "it was so much easier before we had to pay bills" I end up going through a trip of emotions lol. Some of us only got to live after we turned 18. Are world is more messed up than most people realize. No one is guaranteed a decent childhood.
“Hey guys, today you guys are going to be competing to see who can save the most orphans from the Orphan Crushing Machine™! The winner gets $10,000,000 and the chance to see your family again! Isn’t this amazing????” It’s wild that the show shows more self-awareness about the premise within the story itself than the thing that’s parodying(?) it. I guess what I’m saying is I would prefer he donate money directly rather than hosting a game show, but I guess that’s the cynical buzzkill in me talking. I’d also prefer to live in a world where we didn’t have to do this kind of massive donation in the first place, but unfortunately yay capitalism. As for those merch deals and advertisements using Squid Game without a trace of irony, to quote Joyce Messier from Disco Elysium (play it, it rules): “Capital has the ability to subsume all critiques into itself. Even those who would *critique* capital end up *reinforcing* it instead.” Sorry for yapping lol.
I remember the early Mr Beast videos felt very much like a group of friends who were hanging out and having a silly time together. They were fun and very reminiscent of early UA-cam! But as he started to get outside party’s involved, like subscribers and people who the monetary prizes would be life-changing for, the whole thing started to feel a bit icky. It’s not fun watching real people lie and backstab each other over money. Combined with his increasingly… interesting thumbnails and countless controversies, his legacy and the channel as a whole feels like it’s taken a dark turn. And Beast Games in a lot of ways feels like the culmination of that ick in its ultimate form. I haven’t watched it myself aside from clips I’ve seen on social media, and it very much feels reminiscent of the Squid and Hunger Games. But these are real people desperate for better lives, and to watch that as entertainment is uncomfortable, icky, and not fun.
This seems to keep happening with rich people. They see a piece of media that criticizes something in our society or warning us about something and their first thought is, "Wow...That looks cool! Lets make it happen!"
Haven't watched the video yet, but I think the answer is pretty simple: It's literally the torment nexus meme. "Hey, we created the thing from the book/show/movie that explicitely tells you not to create it." So many people don't seem to understand that Squid Game had a message like "Capitalism, consumerism, and the entertainment industry are bad actually." The people who just took away that it would be awesome to have these games for real are the very people the original show criticized for being blind consumers who value entertainment more than a just system or human well-being.
Used to watch MrBeast when he was still a bit smaller, left sometime during the last two years due to this growing feeling of something i felt in his videos, like the sincerity was gone. Dystopian is also a very good word for this i think.
someone I went to high school with was in this. i tried to watch to see him but after the first 5 minutes the brain cell loss was too severe to continue.
Since I am paying for Amazon Prime, I feel obligated to watch some of the content. This show is, well, strange. The competitions seem far too random, with limited personal agency. Random trivia -- "Beast City" was located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada! There was some local controversy because it used non-union production staff.
Really excited to see you branching out onto this channel! (and for what it's worth, couldn't agree more re: the dystopian feel to BG and the way it so spectacularly misses & warps the point of SG, from critique of exploitative capitalism to perpetuating it)
I appreciate you bringing up the people in the 1940s and bringing up Elon “throwing his heart out to the crowd”. In today’s world it feels especially important to not forget the not sees.
18:55 football players also have their family name prominently above their jersey #. More people know the name Travis Kelce than they do #87 on the Chiefs. Only the referees are going to refer to them as that.
You're my new favorite youtube channel and I love everything that you put out. Not a fan of ASMR content, but here you have such soothing voice that is nice to listen to and you have great topics to talk about so its wonderful to listen to and even though you said videos on this channel would be few and far between, I hope you do much more on this channel. Honestly, I don't thing the story being ported to a video game is inherently a bad thing, its a different way to tell a story in a different medium. The problem is they gave it a cartoony artstyle and are marketing it as this silly little game. If they'd made it look realistic and gruesome and you feel bad after playing it, like a horror game, the people wouldn't be mad about it. It's the delivery which is the problem.
As a reality tv enjoyer, the people actually know what they are getting into and its an actual game with potential for a long term narrative. Mr Beast vids are unironically just engineered to promote suffering, and the actual game design is so lacking. Half the games are 'choose someone to leave the game' which isnt a game? The people willing to leave left the previous 20 times you did the same challenge lmao
I also think Squid games revolves around childish games because 1. It’s also inherently dehumanizing. Being reduced to a childlike state is demeaning, children inherently have less power over than adults, they aren’t listened to, they aren’t in charge of their own care, they can’t argue against any punishment they receive. 2. Children’s games are often kind of primal. they can often be brutal. Children are often still developing a sense of morals so it’s not uncommon for some to act underhanded or cheat at games if they can, which is also a good way to refuse their or each other’s humanity.
This is the future of America. Playing games for the enjoyment of million/billionaires. Wait...... Isn't that the point of the Squid Games tv show? No no no, thats silly! Its just fiction! Hahahaha..... hahaha.... haha... ha......
the opening clip of this video officially marks the first and only Mr Beast content I've ever consumed
Same, apart from the few things I've sen relating to his, you know, crimes and fraud and what-not.
@montyr2083 oh yeah I did see the video of him, KSI and whichever Paul sibling having precisely zero chemistry lmao that was awful to watch
sorry to break your streak looool
lmao
Haha literally same. Only ever seen JaidenAnimation’s own video about winning his UA-camr competition.
If I'm remembering correctly, this is exactly why the author of hunger games said it would never be a game or park attraction, because the point would be entirely lost.
And yet here we are
I would actually want to make a Hunger Games video game, but instead of making a "fun" multiplayer game where you can casually murder your friends, it would be a brutal survival horror game that shows the player how terrifying the Hunger Games truly are. I would also add Permadeath, so if your character dies, you would have to play as someone else in the next group of tributes.
I am LIVING for the ASMR Kay commentary/critique channel!
yep
Anti-capitalist Amy Kay is what we all needed
yess
Mr Beast is the kinda guy who sees "Do not make the Torment Nexus" and is like "WE GATHERED 1,000,000 KIDS AND PUPPIES AND WE CREATE THE TORMENT NEXUS FROM DO NOT MAKE THE TORMENT NEXUS"
he literally did. He watched squid games and went "I'm gonna do that for real!"
... The takeaway from Squid Games was to make a legally distinct version of it and throw commercials on it. "He's a philanthropist!"
One of the most famous reality shows is named after dystopian fiction (Big Brother).
It’s crazy how it’s come to this for people to earn money because they aren’t paid a fair living wage. thank you so much for watching 💖💞
Lizzie!
And yes. The same for us where we are (Italy).
it’s truly TERRIFYING thinking about that, i feel so uncomfortable watching that many people in a room together
Thank you for finally putting my feelings about this in words. I've struggled to explain why I hate it so much but this is perfect.
Seeing squid games being marketed like this reminds me of what happened to the vault boy for fallout they used to be a symbol for mocking corporations and how they take advantage of people who arent well off, now they are what they warned of and no longer represent what they used to sad times
11:25 Yeah, that Domino's ad in particular is.... icky.

This channel is quickly becoming my favourite commentary-thing on youtube. The editing is so fun and well done, and the way you approach and talk about topics makes it really easy to jump in even if I've never heard anything about it before lol
It's a matter of time for this channel to blow up, her videos are surprisingly insightful and captivating!
Not the Bernie impression! 😂
Amy! My fave “ASMR actor who should be a professional voice actor!” Glad to see you flex your inner BDG 0:19

great video but I still felt the tingles to the asmr coded voice Kay has (I'm about to fall asleep)
THANK YOU! I've been saying this about Squid Game forever, how absolutely tone deaf everything surrounding it seems

Let's goo, new Kay video!! You've quickly become my favorite content creator, super duper good stuff.
Quality video Amy! Amazing work, can't wait for more from you ❤

No way Amy Kay got another channel, my day is made
Hell yeah, loving this channel
Honey wake up a new Kaytetra video dropped! I haven’t watched Squid Game or Mr Beast content yet so this is interesting… loving the videos!
